Whats L-Carnitine, and Does It Live Up to the Hype? – Greatist
Created for Greatist by the experts at Healthline. Read more
Last week your trainer hyped it as a workout recovery supplement. Then yesterday your co-worker raved about its fat-torching prowess. Rumor has it L-carnitine is a fat-burning, brain-boosting, performance-enhancing machine of a supplement.
But is it all its cracked up to be? Here are the details on L-carnitine.
If the name has you craving some juicy carne, youre actually on the right track. L-carnitine is an amino acid derivative found in meat and animal products. Lucky for the vegans in the house, our bodies can also make it.
Whether you know it or not, youre already familiar with L-carnitine. Your body relies on it every day. Its responsible for fast-tracking fatty acids to your mitochondria, which burn the fat into energy. L-carnitine is basically the low-key conveyor belt sending your fat to the incinerator.
Some signs youre deficient include:
These symptoms are similar to those of many other conditions, so talk to your healthcare provider before you jump on the supplement train.
There are several types of carnitine. L-carnitine kinda steals the spotlight since its the one in red meat and most supplements.
Meet the others:
Bottom line:
ALC and L-carnitine are probably your best bets for a general supplement. But its also important to take a look at the different types in relation to your #goals.
Almost all the L-carnitine in your body is stored in your muscles. The rest is chillin in your liver and bloodstream.
Right now your L-carnitine stores are busy keeping your mitochondria, aka your cells engines, fueled up. And since amino acids play a lot of roles, L-carnitine also picks up toxins and dumps them outside the cell walls. What a gem.
Bottom line:
L-carnitine lives in your muscles, where it shovels fatty acids into cells so they can be burned for energy. Your body makes L-carnitine, but you can boost your level through food or supplements.
Popping L-carnitine might sound like a pretty convenient way drop a little weight. But lets keep it 100: Sure, L-carnitine is responsible for shoveling fatty acids into the furnace, but thats just a teeny, tiny part of the metabolic process.
Despite claims from supplement companies, there just isnt much medical evidence of L-carnitines weight loss superpowers.
Heres what we know:
If youre generally healthy, you probably already produce enough L-carnitine. But your biological clock wreaks havoc on more than baby-making and crows feet. Age can cut into your L-carnitine stores (so can diabetes and genetic conditions).
Studies on animals have suggested that L-carnitine can boost function in aging brains and possibly protect brain cells from damage.
Unfortunately, there isnt much research yet on whether taking L-carnitine boosts brain power in younger, healthier people.
Lets start with the good news: A 2013 review found that L-carnitine helped heart attack patients recover quickly. Since all the carnitines prefer to do their work inside muscle tissue, it makes sense that their presence is good for the heart.
But that same year, a study in mice found that L-carnitine in red meat might increase levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), which could cause clogged arteries.
What gives? A 2004 review of older medical research suggested that L-carnitine does the most for people whove already had a heart attack. The jurys still out on exactly how it could help or harm healthy hearts.
Some research says L-carnitine supports workout #goals in the long term. Typically, L-carnitine is a slow burn. Dont expect it to kick in overnight like caffeine or creatine. Stick with it and you might be running harder, better, faster, stronger in a few months.
On the flip side, a small study of professional athletes found that those who received 3 to 4 grams of L-carnitine immediately before a workout had better endurance.
Heres how L-carnitine might improve your workouts over the long haul:
Living with type 2 diabetes takes a whole lotta discipline. But theres evidence that taking L-carnitine might alleviate some symptoms and risks.
Some research suggests acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) dials down nerve pain and weakness caused by type 2 diabetes. A 2005 study suggested L-carnitine supplements could also lower blood sugar.
There isnt much new research on links between type 2 diabetes and L-carnitine (weight loss studies get all the love, amiright?). But the bottom line is that if youre dosing properly and checking with your doctor, L-carnitine is way more likely to help than to hurt.
L-carnitine is technically FDA-approved for just one use: treating carnitine deficiency. But doses of less than 3 grams a day seem safe for pretty much anyone. Taking too much (2 to 3 grams, depending on your body) can cause mild side effects, including:
And, as we mentioned, a 2013 study in mice found that L-carnitine in red meat might contribute to clogged arteries, although more research is needed.
tl;dr
More medical studies are needed, but up to 2 grams a day seems safe for most people. One animal study suggested that L-carnitine supplements could raise your risk of blocked arteries.
Theres no one size fits most answer for whether or not you should add a bottle of L-carnitine to your medicine cabinet.
Technically, your body can whip up L-carnitine without help, thank you very much. The main things to consider are your diet and whether your body is healthy enough to create what it needs.
The folks most likely to benefit from supplementation:
If you still wanna give L-carnitine a whirl, remember to research the specific carnitine type thats right for your goals. Chatting with your doctor isnt a bad idea either.
Most people supplement with 500 to 2,000 milligrams of L-carnitine per day. Two grams (2,000 milligrams) seems to be the sweet spot for long-term effectiveness without health risks.
Pill-popping isnt the only way to give yourself a little L-carnitine love. You can find it in foods, liquids, powders, and even injections.
While the best way to score nutrients is through diet and a healthy lifestyle, supplements can help. If youre concerned about mixing meds, its always a good idea to check with your doctor.
Your body absorbs L-carnitine from food sources more quickly than from supplements. Sneak in some L-carnitine with a 3-ounce serving (about the size of your palm) of these meats:
Meat is your best bet, but other animal products deliver itty-bitty doses of L-carnitine too:
Mix a concentrated liquid supplement into your morning glass of water or OJ if youre not a fan of swallowing pills. Bonus: You can try ALL the flavors! Start slow, with a 1,000-milligram dose per day.
Cost is the main drawback to liquid supplements. Youll get more bang for your buck with powder or pill forms.
Powdered L-carnitine supplements work well for those who already whip up a protein shake or smoothie in the morning. Add a scoop (1,000 milligrams) along with your collagen or protein powder.
Theres not much difference in cost between powder and pills, so pick whatever strikes your fancy.
Injections and IV doses of L-carnitine are best left up to the pros. In a 2014 study of people who had an L-carnitine deficiency, switching from pills to IV therapy had a positive effect on cholesterol levels.
If you think your body is L-carnitine deficient, its best to talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options and sources.
Most medical research on humans taking L-carnitine has involved pills, so sticking to this supplement form gives you the highest chance of getting good results. Vegetarian capsules are available, so its a #win for those who prefer their L-carnitine without the carne.
L-carnitine is known as a fat-burner because thats what it does on the cellular level. Studies on leveraging that for weight loss have been mixed.
Of all the different carnitine types, L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine show the most promise. Theres evidence that these forms are good for your brain and heart and even for disease prevention.
Supplements are a good idea for people with naturally low L-carnitine levels: older adults, vegans, and vegetarians. But its best to chat with your doctor before taking any new supplement.

All you need to know about the keto diet and weight loss – Pulse Live Kenya
For a while now, people have been going crazy about the ketogenic diet for weight loss. I mean, who wouldnt want to lose those pounds without having to break a sweat? But before you go keto like the rest, you need to know what it is about and how ketosis works.
Basically, your bodys main source of fuel is carbs. You get carbs from eating foods such as legumes, vegetables, potatoes, whole grains and others. However, when you are on a ketogenic diet, you deprive your body of carbs and feed it with more fats. This way, the body is forced to make use of stored fats as a source of energy. This process of converting stored fat into molecules (ketones) is what is referred to as ketosis. When your body gets to this point, it uses the ketones as a source of fuel until the next time you consume carbohydrates. This means that the more your body uses the stored fats, the more fat you lose hence the weight loss.

So what do you eat when on keto diet?
If you are going the keto way, you will have to quit most of your favourites since the diet involves more fats, not so much proteins and very few carbs. You will also have to stop eating fruits and some vegetables since most of them are high in carbs.
Shutterstock
Usually, you are supposed to be eating less than 50g of carbs every day. Less than 50g of carbs in a day is approximately not more than three slices of bread. Then, the fats take the highest percentage followed by proteins which must be taken in moderation. Both saturated and unsaturated fats are welcome. Avocados, fatty fish, nuts, olive oil, bacon, whole eggs and dark chocolates are some of the fats you can rely on when on a keto diet.
Does the keto diet really work?
Most people swear by this diet and we have seen celebrities join into the craze. Some studies have found that indeed, a low carb diet like the keto diet indeed helps one to lose weight.
One particular study that sought to find out the long term effects of keto diet also found that it did help people to lose weight. In the study, 83 obese patients were put on keto diet and their results observed after a period of 16-20 weeks. The study reported that the patients body mass index and their weight reduced significantly after the treatment.
The side effects of keto diet
While the ketogenic diet may give you the results you want, the risk is that its not a sustainable lifestyle. Think about it; for how long can you eat fatty foods? Most people get nauseated by a lot of fats which might also be a contributing factor to weight loss when on keto diet.
As such, the results of the diet tend to be only short-lived and people find themselves going back to their earlier eating habits hence going back to their unhealthy weight.
The other downside of ketogenic diet is that you might miss on some important nutrients since you are not eating enough fruits and vegetables.
If you want to lose weight, its best to look for a sustainable solution. Look for a healthy routine you can continue the practice even after you have hit your target so that you do not regain unhealthy weight.

Helping seniors stay healthy
This winter as the rate of senior hospitalization typically reaches its highest point of the year the Home Instead Senior Care, serving Danvers and surrounding areas, has committed to reducing area hospitalizations through the launch of a new informational campaign aimed at educating families how to help aging loved ones remain healthy at home year-round.
There are many things families can do to help keep their senior loved ones out of the hospital. In fact, in a new study of nurses who work primarily with seniors, 99 percent say that the role families play in keeping seniors out of the hospital is just as important as the role of the medical community.
From monitoring their taking of prescribed medications for chronic conditions to attending doctors visits and checking in to ensure doctors instructions are followed, their role as a medical advocate is critical.
To help family members identify and act on potential warning signs, Home Instead is offering Five Ways to Prevent Senior Hospitalizations guide, developed in partnership with Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, incoming president of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association.
This free resource includes information about common risk factors and the steps that families can take to help ensure a healthy lifestyle. Mariah Carey Weight Loss Over The Years – Daily Hawker
After a 30 year career of giving it all, giving birth to twins, body shaming and the stress of the music industry, its safe to say that Mariah Careys weight loss has been fluctuating.
After the birth of her twins in 2011, Carey (then 41 years old) ended up losing 70 pounds on the Jenny Craig diet plan.
She lost the weight with a strict diet and exercise plan, but added, I never weighed myself. People will think Im a liar but its true ... Im a big-boned girl, Im tall, and so I always weigh more. Instead of stepping on the scale, she said, I would tend to go, Does this size dress fit me that I wore three years ago? ... I would go by what it looked like, how I felt.
Mariah struggled with self acceptance a lot while she was pregnant.
When I was pregnant, I had a house with lots of antique mirrors on the walls, so as I walked around, I couldnt help but look at myselfthis huge pregnant woman, she recalls. I hated myself for decorating the house with all these mirrors. I was so mad at myself.
In fact, figuring out the proper lighting and decor in her home is essential to helping her feel her best.
According to a 2015 report, Carey might have started toying with the idea of a gastric sleeve for weight loss after hearing her ex-fianc, James Packer boast about it. The singers size had been steadily increasing over the years and it was her (then) billionaire boyfriend who put the idea in her since he himself lost more than 75 pounds from the procedure in 2011, an inside source revealed.
In 2016, Carey dished to ETs favorite daytime diva, Sharon Osbourne about her personal weight struggle. She was talking about getting ready to marry the millionaire businessman, James Packer.
The funny thing with me is I would always be like, Oh! I gained weight, because I am muscular, so sometimes I dont even notice it, Carey explained. Now I have been pretty consistent with this bleak diet that I am on.
She went on to mention this bleak diet again in another interview with ET about the dietary regime she has to follow while getting ready to perform for her Caesars Palace residency. Leading up to the big day, shes probably months deep in diets and more.
She said: I tried to bring the moments, the costumes, but its hard. I guess thats why I am on my bleak diet.
Basically, its as bleak as it sounds because she may have been trolling interviewers with this term.
Yes. My diet is very bleak, she told the Sunday Times, giggling. I overuse the word because there is a lot of bleakness going on. My bleak diet is horrendous, but I dont want to tell anyone about it because its none of their business.
I just dont want people commenting, she adds hinting that she doesnt want anyone to ask about her diet and exercise regimen at all.
Carry knows this stems from struggling to find confidence. I am a pretty insecure person, she explains, But I have to get over that because this is the reality of my life. I look better than I looked a few months ago, but I am definitely not one of those people who says, I look amazing today.'
Maybe this is why her weight had increased since and Mariah Careys biggest weight loss headline would come in 2017, from her gastric sleeve weight loss surgery. Theres no time for insecurity when youre in a permanent contract with the size of your stomach.
Aah, the year of body shaming! But haters would soon learn about how the power of determination, perseverance and having money can go a long way!
In 2017, online trolls really got to Mariah Careys skin when they commented unkind remarks about the singer during her Caesars Palace residency. One source revealed that Mariah Carey wanted weight loss through exercise and dieting again, but then she started getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers. The hateful comments shaming her size and pushed Mariah towards the procedure in September or October 2017.
Some of the comments read:
Mariah you need to lose some weight, you are starting to look like a whale
She looks like she cant breathe
The body shaming wasnt the first time Mariah felt insecure about her weight though. In 2011, she was feeling insecure about being the huge pregnant lady. Then, an insider opened up about her insecurities of weight gain to a point where: She has the tags cut out of clothes, so she can be blissfully unaware of her size.
All of this changed when she walked into her Hand and Footprint Ceremony at Hollywood.
In September 2017, ET confirmed that Mariah Carey lost weight by undergoing a gastric sleeve weight-loss surgery performed by a top surgeon in Beverly Hills, California. At age 47, Mariah felt like this was a new beginning for her.
She had shed at least 30 pounds from going through weight loss surgery by November 2017!
Mariah Careys weight loss came from a gastric sleeve and a new diet regime which includes: Salmon, Capers, Chicken Broth and an occasional glass of wine. Since gastric sleeve weight loss surgery is a procedure that shrinks the size of the stomach, patients eat less and so this type of diet could be the new diet Mariah had to follow. The procedure can be done via a small incision, meaning recovery time is fast and scarring is minimal.
This was the year where she became very confident about her appearance. Yes, like any diet, it was hard in the beginning but Mariah Carey was able to keep up with it, leading to a healthy mindset and body.
After 30 years of singing for us, Carey seems to be in the best shape of her life. Her career has had many ups and downs but in 2019, she snapped this photo on Instagram and posted it in January 2019. With a fabulous body, she also flaunts the effects of a consistent diet and exercise routine dressed in a two-piece swimsuit with minimal makeup.
When it comes to diets, Mariah Carey has been very open about trying to lose weight and her insecurities with the same. Fortunately, a source close to Carey told HollywoodLife.com that the (then 48 year old) entertainer follows a completely sugar-free diet and consumes plenty of lean protein.
Mariah loves smoked salmon and capers, so she eats a lot of that lean Instagram photos left us wondering exactly how shes managed to slim down, and attain one of the most enviable figures in the industry.
After looking at those bikini photos taken in January 2019, many have been wondering how they too can look that good at the age of 48.
The answer may lie in following a strict diet full of protein and the special secret: Cut out sugar completely, and that is processed sugar.
She has cut out chocolate and other sweets, and when she has cravings, she eats little pieces of fruit, like some blueberries or mangos, an insider said. She is working out regularly and eating clean, whole foods with a focus on vegetables. She has also cut out carbs and bread. As a result, she has lost a ton of weight and is looking and feeling great!
Carey also mentioned to Us Weekly that after delivering twins, she enlisted a full-time dietitian who helps her stick to 1,500 calories a day, especially in times where she needs to quickly shed excess weight.
When eating 1500 calories she would have opted for snacking on multiple smaller meals throughout the day instead of eating 3 big meals to keep her energy levels up while also avoiding bloating and tiredness.
Page six revealed that Mariah has always been proud of her curves, but this summer, as her Caesars Palace residency came to a close, and then she went on tour with Lionel Richie, she noticed it became harder to dance, and she was getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers.
It is hard to dance if unlike Jennifer Loper or Beyonce, you are well known for being a singer first and foremost. With vocal ranges of a goddess, why does her weight even matter?! She fluctuates and thats been something we all have dealt with at some point in time.
According to Us Weekly, Carey works out three times a week to stay at the perfect weight, and looks radiant without makeup. But some feel that her radiance could have plenty to do with her on/off relationship with back-up dancer Bryan Tanaka, the singer-songwriter has disclosed exactly how she maintains her physique in recent interviewsconsidering life as a mother to twins Moroccan and Monroe can admittedly get hectic.
Aside from being a mom to twins, Mariah Carey gets her heart pumping from workouts that are aerobic. These have been known to release pressure from your bones as well as relaxing your muscles. While aerobics are often unfairly associated with the elderly, Everyday Health reports that it makes your blood more capable of delivering oxygen around your body, as well as reducing chances of cardiovascular disease.
As with any entertainer, being on the road or preparing for your body to perform in front of millions is challenging. If Instagram is real even in the slightest of chances, Mariah seems to be doing fine with her weight.

The truth behind the 10000 steps fitness regime – CNA
With the whole Chinese New Year (CNY) period slowly wrapping up, the strong desire to lose weight and get active usually kicks in right about now.
Youve had your fill of pineapple tarts and bak kwa, your Fitbits been registering fewer than 3,000 steps a day for the past week and youve been guilty-reading all those news articles calculating how much exercise you need to do to burn off that single hae bee hiam roll.
It does look like you have a lot of walking to do to shake off those post-CNY love handles but who has the time to take 10,000 steps a day? Thats eight kilometres.
WHY 10,000 STEPS IN THE FIRST PLACE?
From manufacturers of wearable fitness trackers to advocates of Singapores National Steps Challenge, anyone who has an interest in helping you become healthier would have seeded this in your mind: Aim for 10,000 steps a day.
That seems like a tough task. On average, Singaporeans take about 5,674 steps per day, according to a Stanford University study published in the science journal Nature in 2017. If you take fewer than 5,000 steps a day, youre considered sedentary. Which isnt good.
There is an association between sedentary behaviour such as prolonged sitting, and various health risks such as risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and death, said Dr Amanda Lim, an associate consultant with the Division of Endocrinology at National University Hospital. Walking and moving around a little bit throughout the day may reduce these risks, especially if a persons baseline activity level is sedentary.
But where did 10,000 steps come from specifically? It began as a marketing campaign for a pedometer shortly before the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Its name, Manpo-kei, comes from man for 10,000, po for steps and kei for measurein Japanese. The campaign encouraging users to walk 10,000 steps a day was so successful that the number has become the definitive goal on todays fitness trackers and in wellness programmes.
SO, DOES IT REALLY WORK?
The virtues of the 10,000-step guideline werent examined in depth until Professor I-Min Lee from Harvard Universitys TH Chan School of Public Health did; her study waspublished in theJournal Of The American Medical Association in May 2019.
Prof Lees research, ranging from 2011 to 2015, was based on 16,741 women aged 62 to 101 the same population she had worked with previously to study the relationship of physical activity and health in older women. During this period, the participants wore tracking devicesduring waking hours.
What the professor found was interesting. Instead of 10,000 steps which, honestly, not many of us succeed in achieving she discovered that participants who averaged 4,400 daily steps already had a 41 per cent reduction in mortality. That percentage increased the more steps the women took, but up to a certain point. In fact, mortality rates levelled off at approximately 7,500 steps per day.
Living longer aside, aspiring to 7,500 steps rather than 10,000 steps is also a more attainable goal. This is good news as, on average, Singaporeans walk around 5,000 steps per day and an additional 2,500 steps daily is an achievable goal for most, said Dr Alan Cheung, an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospitals International Orthopaedic Clinic.
WHAT ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS?
When it comes to weight loss though, it isnt as simple as walking X number of steps to burn off the calories of each kueh bangkit you eat.
In fact, steps arent big contributors to weight loss; 10,000 steps would torch just about 300 calories to 500 calories, depending on the intensity of your walk, said Dr Mandy Zhang, an associate consultant with Changi General Hospital'sSport & Exercise Medicine. To lose about half a kilo a week, youll need to have a calorie deficit of3,500 calories a week, said Dr Zhang, ideally from both exercise and diet.
Ten thousand steps would torch just about 300 calories to 500 calories, depending on the intensity of your walk. To lose about 0.5kga week, youll need to have a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories a week, ideally from both exercise and diet.
Instead, other factors such as your basal metabolic rate, thermic effect of food (the energy your body requires for digesting food) and, of course, exercise, play bigger roles, said Dr Lim. And by exercise, shes referring to the Health Promotion Boards recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week.
Interestingly, steps arent regarded as exercise but a component of energy expenditure called non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), said Dr Lim. This includes standing up from a seated position or taking the stairs when the MRT escalators get too crowded. As long as it is an activity that requires some form of physical exertion, its counted as NEAT.
In general, the number of steps a person takes per day does not directly contribute to those 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, unless the individual is walking at a pace or at an incline that pushes the heart rate to the moderate intensity zone, said Dr Lim.
And there's also yourcircadian rhythmtheinternal clock that governs when you sleep and waketo consider. Constantly messing up your sleep cycle can preventyourbody from working efficiently andaffect"digestion, metabolism and use of fat stores", said Dr Zhang.
CAN YOU STILL MAKE THE 10,000-STEP GUIDELINE WORK?
That is not to say you shouldn't bother trying to hit 10,000 steps a day. It is an easy start for getting yourself out of a sedentary lifestyle, which, according to Dr Cheung, is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality.
Moreover, physical inactivity is estimated to be the main cause for around 25 per cent of breast and colon cancers, diabetes and ischaemic heart disease, he said. Worryingly, one in 10 Singaporeans have diabetes and Singapore has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world.
If 10,000 steps in a day seem impossible, Dr Lim suggests increasing the target by 500 steps per day for one week. Once the target becomes comfortable and easily achievable, you can increase the target further. Any increment in activity and reduction in sedentary time is beneficial, she said.
Also, people should remember that missing targets is only human. Dont be too hard on yourself or give up entirely, she said. Healthy living is a cumulative and long-term process. Focus on the benefits and remind yourself that any improvement, no matter how small, is beneficial.
Dr Lim also emphasised that it is extremely difficult to lose weight through exercise alone without controlling diet, so dont see the 10,000 steps as the be all and end all to your post-CNY weight-loss effort.

Why MDs Are Fans Of This Modified Keto Diet + A 5-Day Meal Plan To Get Started – mindbodygreen.com
While Diulus personally benefits from a vegan keto diet, as do some of her patients, she stresses that there's a spectrum when it comes to diets, and it may not be for you. "Some people do amazingly well on a low-fat, plant-based diet, and some people do great on a carnivore diet. It's about figuring out what works best with your body and how you feel the best," she says.
Registered dietitian Abby Cannon, R.D., also cautions people not to jump on the vegan keto train without thinking long and hard about why they want to do it and weighing the potential risksbecause there are a few significant concerns.
"It's very difficult to adhere to while also ensuring that you're getting enough nutrients and not developing disordered eating habits," says Cannon. "If you don't consume soy products, it's hard to ensure that you receive enough protein, given that you have to cut out whole grains and beansstaple protein sources in a vegan diet!" Like all vegan diets, vegan keto will also be deficient in vitamin B12 and potentially low in iron and other nutrients, so Cannon recommends a comprehensive multivitamin if you do try it.
Vegan keto may also be pretty hard to sustain unless you're particularly motivated. "It's unlikely that anyone can stick to it long term, and any rapid weight loss experienced is likely to come right back on once you return to your normal eating habits," says Cannon, noting that many of the healthiest, longest-living people in the world eat legumes, whole grains, fruits, and starchy vegetablesall of which are a no-go on a vegan keto diet.
If there's a medical reason for needing a ketogenic diet, the vegan keto diet might be an option, says Cannon, but it's extremely important that when trying any restrictive diet that you do so with the support of professionals to ensure that you're meeting your nutritional needs and doing it for the right reasons. That said, if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of disordered eating, you should definitely pass on this diet, she says.
Additionally, your vegan keto diet may also result in side effects that are somewhat typical of all keto diets, especially ones that aren't balanced, including a temporary but drastic upswing in cravings, moodiness, and fatigue (often called "keto flu"); too much weight loss; hair loss (especially if you're not getting enough protein); and imbalances in electrolytes, which get flushed out when you lose water weight. To offset electrolyte imbalances, Diulus recommends increasing your sodium intake a bit and supplementing with magnesium.
And, if you're doing everything "right" and still don't feel good, vegan keto may just not be for youand that's OK. In fact, Belardo switched back to her higher-carb vegan diet after her two-week vegan keto experiment because she was losing too much weight and missed some of her favorite foods, including fruits. (Here are some signs a keto diet just isn't working for you.)

It seems like everyone shares a common struggle and common goal: How do we get healthier, look better and feel better? We all agonize over the search for the easiest diet and the fastest weight-loss tricks. And there is no shortage of supplements, weight-loss fads and diets. There is so much noise it is hard to really understand what works and what does not.
Can CBD be the answer to our weight loss and fitness goals? The rumors are true: You really can lose weight with a combination of CBD and terpenes.
With CBD weight loss, you dont have to overcomplicate the pathway to your goals. Ive seen it firsthand with Tune CBD Weight Loss Elixir. It works with your body to achieve a natural, gentle and longterm positive change in your health.
Whether our desire to lose weight is rooted in aesthetics, wellness or both, the pursuit for a leaner lifestyle seems to be cyclical and never-ending. This frustrating pattern of diet and weight gain is due to one simple fact: Most of us are doing it wrong. Science and studies have shown us time and again that fad diets dont work. While they are sometimes quick fixes, the results seldom stick around.
However, there is one proven way to lose weight and keep it off: calories in vs. calories out. All you really have to do is curb your overeating and Tunes CBD and terpene blend can help do just that. To me, Tunes CBD Weight Loss Elixir is the diet that works.
As we all know, limiting ones caloric intake is easier said than done. Its frustratingly difficult to get our urges in line. Tunes Weight Loss Elixir is made with CBD and enhanced by a proprietary blend of terpenes that use the natural powers of hemp to tell your body when to stop eating.
Weve tried just about every tactic there is and have finally settled into a comfortable and results-driven CBD routine that has increased our wellbeing tenfold. Here is what weve learned on our journey, broken down into 10 quick facts to help build the foundation of your new whole-body wellness habit.
Everyone holds fat in their body good fat and bad fat. Good fat helps you to maintain a healthy weight, and those who are lean and metabolically healthy tend to have more of it. Bad fat accumulates under the skin and gathers around our internal organs. Bad fat is what causes weight gain, cellulite and generally affects our overall physical and mental health negatively.
Fat increases when you consume more calories than you burn. On the plus side, this also means that fat decreases when you consume less calories than you burn.
You dont control your hunger. Being hungry is not due to a lack of motivation or willpower, but rather a very natural and biological response to our bodys signals. We cannot simply will ourselves to eat less; the reason for this exists in a tiny part of your brain called the hypothalamus.
The most active part of the hypothalamus tells us we are hungry and must eat more to survive. The weaker portion tells us when we are full. Most of the time this stronger part of the brain wins and we are left unaware of our bodys actual limits, causing us to overeat.
To ease false urges and be aware of our bodys limits, we must learn to better understand its signals. We can improve communication by using an expertly crafted CBD formula to stimulate the brain during meals, shutting down the desire to overeat.
The cannabinoid THC is almost legendary for creating an appetite, or, the munchies. THC increases your bodys hunger communication, encouraging excess calorie consumption and weight gain. Luckily for us, enhanced levels of certain cannabis-derived terpenes suppresses appetite. How does it do this? By doing just what we want it to, stimulating the right portion of the brain thus shutting down the desire to overeat.
The fat reducing effects of CBD were first observed in a 2012, when it was shown to significantly reduced total food consumption by:
An alternative to harmful diets and snake oil supplements has long been searched for, and has finally been found in a combination of CBD and enhanced terpenes. After multiple studies and success stories, this CBD diet has emerged as a safe and effective alternative to fight unwanted weight gain.
Most of us living in Southern California are no stranger to CBD. Los Angeles is virtually littered with advertisements and products; we often dont go more than a mile without seeing its presence. However familiar with the name we are, most of us arent experts in the subject which makes us targets for inflated and exaggerated promises. In order to see actual results from CBD weight loss, we have to find a product that is rooted in science with proven results.
Tune Wellness CBD is a THC-free, terpene enhanced, broad-spectrum liquid that helps promote fat loss through three separate physiological channels including increasing energy at the mitochondrial level, increasing fat burning by improving the ratio of good fat to bad fat and appetite suppression.
If You Are Ready For A Lasting Change, Try Tune Wellness
Tune Weight Loss Elixir is a cannabinoid, terpene and cannaflavin rich hemp extract standardized to a specific total quantity of CBD and enhanced with specific appetite suppressing terpenes. It works with precision, opening the communication channels between your brain and your body, putting a stop to harmful overeating.
If you want to lose weight quickly or just need a diet that works, Tune Wellness is the best dieting trick on the market.

Neuron Found In Mice Could Have Implications For Effective Diet Drugs – Science Times
(Photo : pixabay)
Have you ever eaten something, got sick and then you did not want to eat that food again because of how it made you feel? That is because a signal from the gut to the brain produced that sickness, thus creating a taste aversion.
The conventional wisdom renders that there is one circuit in our brain that suppresses eating, it comes from the stomach and it makes you feel sick if you activate it too hard. Eating a portioned meal makes your body happy, though, even while you are stimulating a signal your brain to stop eating. This is according to Martin Myers Jr., M.D. Ph.D., the Michigan Diabetes Research Center's director. He said that there could be a circuit that can stop normal feeding without adverse effects.
Now, a Cell Metabolism study may have discovered the second circuit in mice. The director of the Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center, Randy Seeley, Ph.D., together with Myers and other researchers sought to better understand which part of the brain curbs the appetite and which the neurons work on making mice want to eat more or not at all.
The gut-brain signal that suppresses the appetite is triggered by a type of neuron, containing CALCR or calcitonin receptor, which lives in a structure of the hindbrain called the medulla. These neurons did not need to be active in the brain for gut sickness to cause an aversive response.
Myers said that this study suggested that they might be able to dissociate the brainstem systems that stop feeding on those that cause nausea, and his group who found that they could genetically activate those CALCR neurons could do that.
Singling out the responsible neuron
Since there are neurons that can suppress eating but can also cause aversive effects, that means that there are different types of neurons, or circuits, in the brain that can terminate feeding with differing emotional responses. When the researchers made adjustments and inactivated the neurons called CALCR, the researchers were taken aback when they made another discovery. It then contradicted the idea that the brain only controls short term meal sizes and consumption.
By turning the neurons off, it did not only interfere with the suppression of feeding by gut signals, but it also caused an ongoing increase in food intake. The mice became obese, thus suggesting that the brainstem systems do not only control meal size, but the amount of food consumed long term. This created a predisposition to obesity because of the energy imbalance in the mice.
Similarly, activating CALCR neurons decreased the food intake of the mice and the bodyweight without any aversive gut effects. In the research, Myers and fellow researchers found another neuron, called the CCK, and it also decreased food intake and body weight however it created an aversive internal response, not like the CALCR neurons. The difference between the two neurons, CCK and CALCR, was found in their circuits.
Myers said that CCK activates what we would call a yucky circuit. The neurons activate a certain cell, the CGRP cells, which then create that sick feeling. Unlike CCK. activated CALCR neurons follow a yummy circuit, thus activating non-CGRP cells.
Potential implications in humans
Obesity and being overweight affects more than one-third of the adult population in developed countries, which can then lead to diabetes or other serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and more.Unfortunately, a lot of diet drugs work, but they make people feel nauseous after they take them Obesity is still one of the conditions that are difficult to manage pharmaceutically.
This is because the treatment options have limited therapeutic utility. A drug that turns on the CALCR and turns of the CGRP could benefit those who are suffering from obesity because it suppresses feeding and it creates a long term control of food intake and body weight.
Myers also said that if they could figure out a drug for people with obesity that can suppress food intake to produce long term weight loss without the negative side effects, it could absolutely change people's lives.

Weight Loss Drug Belviq Tied To ‘Possible Increased Risk Of Cancer,’ FDA says – Science Times
(Photo : pexels)
The FDA or the US Food and Drug Administration warns the public that the prescription weight loss medicine called Belviq might be linked to an increased risk of cancer. The findings were the result of a clinical trial that assessed the safety of the drugs Belviq and Belviq RX, or lorcaserin.
The FDA stated that at this time, the cause of the cancer is not certain, and they can't conclude that lorcaserin contributes to the cancer risk. But they wanted to make the public aware of this potential risk. They are continuing to evaluate the clinical trial results and they will communicate their conclusions and recommendations when they have completed their review.
The FDA went on to note that health care professionals should consider if the benefits of taking lorcaserin exceed the potential risks for a patient and that patients that are currently taking the drug should talk to their doctors about the potential increased risk of cancer. The drug manufacturer, Eisai Inc., responded to the announcement of the FDA in a written statement.
The statement said that patient safety is Eisai's priority and they will continue to work closely with the FDA to evaluate the clinical trial results. They recommend patients to talk directly to their health care professionals in order to make the best decision about their medical treatment. As shown in the FDA's communication, at this time, the FDA and Eisai can't conclude that Belviq increases the risk of cancer.
Health risks of taking Belviq
Lorcaserin was approved by the FDA in 2012. It is an oral medication, and it was made available by prescription the year following to help weight loss in adults who are overweight and obese and have weight-related medical problems. Lorcaserin, also available as Belviq, which is taken twice a day, and Belviq XR, which is an extended-release once a day tablet, works by increasing the feelings of fullness so you eat less.
According to the FDA, when approving lorcaserin, they required the drug manufacturer Eisai Inc., to conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in order to evaluate the risk of heart-related problems. In the trial, conducted in about 12,000 people over five years, more patients taking lorcaserin were diagnosed with cancer compared to those who took a placebo, which was an inactive treatment. The FDA said that their evaluation of this potential signal is ongoing, and at this time it is not certain if lorcaserin increases the risk of cancer.
Weight loss drugs
The weight-loss drugs that were approved by the FDA for long-term use include orlistat, whose brand name is Xenical, lorcaserin, whose brand name is Belviq, and liraglutide, whose brand name is Saxenda, as well as the combination drugs naltrexone-bupropion, whose brand name is Contrave and phentermine-topiramate, whose brand name is Qsymia.
In a recent study, these drugs helped overweight or obese people lose at least 5% of their body weight at the end of a year, and that is at least 10 pounds, compared with a placebo. Saxenda and Qsymia were linked to the highest odds of getting that amount of weight loss. For a lot of people, losing 5% to 10% of your body weight is linked to improved blood pressure, triglycerides and blood sugar, these factors are known to lower the risk for heart disease and diabetes.
