The red wine ingredient resveratrol mimicked the metabolic effects of dieting and exercising in obese men, a small study found. Although it didn't lead to weight loss, a daily 150-milligram dose of resveratrol lowered blood pressure as well as blood glucose levels and liver fat in obese men after 30 days, Dutch researchers reported today in the journal Cell Metabolism. "It seems to make you metabolically healthier without weight loss," said study author Patrick Schrauwen of Maastricht University in the Netherlands. "I don't think it's a weight-loss drug." Resveratrol -- a compound found in grape skin, peanuts and dark chocolate -- has made headlines in recent years for its reputed health benefits. In 2006, Harvard researchers reported its ability to counteract the harmful effects of a high-fat diet and lower the risk of death in mice. It has also been shown to reduce cancer risk and slow aging in laboratory models -- findings yet to be replicated in humans despite soaring sales of the supplement. 19-01-2012 01:29 The plantar fascia, or arch tendon, is a thick band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the front of the foot. It is made of three distinct parts: medial, central, and lateral bands. The central band is the thickest and strongest and is the portion most likely involved in plantar fasciitis pain. In normal function the plantar fascia acts as a shock absorber and support mechanism for the arch of the foot. During gait, or movement, the plantar fascia acts like a spring to conserve energy and provide propulsion. Tension increases while the foot is on the ground to store the energy and is then released during toe-off to help with acceleration. Plantar Fasciitis literally means inflammation of the plantar fascia, but most cases are more degenerative changes rather than inflammatory ones. A new term being used to accurately describe the condition is plantar fasciosis. The condition accounts for about 10% of runner related injuries and is twice as predominant in women than in men. Because of this high incidence in runners, microtrauma from repeated stress is believed to be the primary base cause. Causes are often multifaceted and can range from biomechanical (poor form) to cellular (poor diet) and any combination of the possibilities in between. Activities such as running, bearing significant amounts of weight for long periods of time, jumping, and dancing can all cause repeated stress along the plantar fascia -- especially at the junction with the heel. I am losing weight the simplest way possible... by counting calories and exercising. This is going to be long term weight loss. I am not in a race to see how much can lose in the shortest amount of time. I need this "diet" to be my new lifestyle. I started out doing short term weight loss but have since moved on to long term.
