Xulane Side Effects: Common, Rare, and Long-Term – Healthline

Xulane is a brand-name prescription birth control patch thats applied once per week for 3 weeks each month. Each day, the patch releases 150 micrograms (mcg) of progestin and 35 mcg of ethinyl estradiol, a type of estrogen.

Like other forms of birth control, the patch is a highly effective form of hormonal contraception. But unlike oral contraception, where you take pills every day, Xulane works by delivering hormones through the skin via a bandage-like patch.

Hormonal contraception, including birth control patches, has evolved so much so that serious side effects are relatively rare.

However, theres still a risk for side effects while taking Xulane. Your chances of experiencing more serious ones depend on certain underlying risk factors. Some effects may be temporary, while others might be more long-term.

Make sure you understand all of the potential side effects associated with Xulane, and talk with your doctor to determine whether this form of birth control is best for you.

All types of hormonal birth control carry a risk of side effects. These are primarily related to estrogen.

At 35 mcg per day, Xulane contains about 60 percent more estrogen than the average oral contraceptive. Thus, you may be at an increased risk for estrogen-related side effects.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc throughout almost every aspect of life. The pandemic has presented numerous challenges for care-dependent adults and children and their families. To help stop the spread of coronavirus, nursing homes and similar facilities instituted complete lockdowns and eliminated visits with family and friends.

Family and friends are not able to have the same face-to-face interactions to ensure the well-being of their loved ones.

Experts have suggested there could be an increase in nursing home abuse and neglect as a result of the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, research suggested only 1 in 24 cases were reported to the appropriate authorities. As facilities begin to reopen to the public and allow scheduled visits, it is important that family and friends look for signs of potential neglect and abuse such as unexplained bruises and wounds, cognitive deficits, and weight loss. If one suspects neglect or abuse, it is important to report it immediately to ensure the safety of loved ones and others in the same facility.

Unexplained injuries, like bruises, welts, open wounds, pressure ulcers/bed sores, or scarring, can be caused by neglect or abuse. Elder abuse and neglect does not just involve physical harms. It can, for example, include sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, financial exploitation, and inappropriate use of physical or medicinal restraints. Unfortunately, these types of harms can occur even at the hands of a trusted, long-time caregiver.

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact 911. I have been asked to investigate and prosecute far too many unfortunate cases here in Pennsylvania and often wonder how things may have turned out differently for all involved had someone taken the time to report concerns. If something does not seem right to you, do not ignore that nudge. Report the concern and let professionals investigate the concerns.

Not every incident supports a private personal injury claim, but the whole point of reporting any concern is to allow professionals to determine how to best protect patients and prevent serious harm. It is better to allow trained investigators to confirm nothing is wrong than to wonder later how things may have turned out differently if concerns were not reported.

Coming out of the November 2020 election, one piece of news that was easy to miss was the state of Oregons decision to decriminalize psilocybin and legalize it for therapeutic use.

Our report on how research has shown psilocybin to be highly effective in the treatment of major depressive disorder was, therefore, well-timed.

In the small clinical trial, researchers gave two doses of psilocybin to 24 participants. Within 1 week, 67% of the group showed reduced severity of their depressive symptoms. This number increased to 71% after 4 weeks, at which point, 54% of the participants were no longer classified as having depression.

There were some limitations to the study, apart from its small size, such as the lack of a control group receiving a placebo. However, the benefits of psilocybin treatment appear to last longer than those of similar therapies using ketamine.

Using a population health management program specifically, a phone- and email-based system that connects people with experienced weight loss practitioners alongside an online program may be more effective than the online program alone. That was the key finding of a new study that MNT covered this week.

Such programs are designed to help individuals maintain control of chronic health issues, such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension, by putting them in regular one-to-one contact with practitioners.

People who participated in virtual care of this type and also took part in a more traditional online program were more likely to lose 5% of their body weight than those who used the online program only. They were also more likely to maintain the weight loss.

MNT have reported before on research indicating the benefits of exercise for warding off dementia, but not all exercise may have this effect.

A new study has observed an association between undertaking hard physical labor and a higher rate of dementia. People whose work involved continuous physical exertion, standing for long periods, and repetitive movementhad almost 1.5 times the rate of dementia than people who described their work as sedentary.

In contrast, healthy exercise tends to be high in intensity but of short duration, allowing a person plenty of time to recover between bouts of exertion.

Finally, this week, we reported on research that reveals that although interruptions while working may not trouble us consciously, our bodies view the matter very differently. Such interruptions cause markers of stress, such as the production of the hormone cortisol, to increase without a corresponding psychological impact.

The lesson seems to be that even when you dont feel stressed, your body may still experience physiological stress, which can have long-term consequences for your health. On the other hand, an interruption may be welcome because it offers a brief respite from psychological stress. As ever, it seems there is a balance to strike.

Feeling good! Emily Simpson revealed her amazing weight loss transformation after committing to a healthier lifestyle last year.

The Real Housewives of Orange County star, 44, showed off her slimmer figure in a before and after photo on social media on Tuesday, November 10.

I never wanted to show these photos publicly because Im ashamed of where I let myself get, but here I am showing my transformation because I want to be transparent with you all, Simpson, who had hip replacement surgery in October 2019, wrote via Instagram. I worked my butt off to get here and Im so proud of how far Ive come and continue to go!

In the first photo, the reality star is wearing leggings and a tank top, showing off her pre-weight-loss body. She then posted a snap of herself now, in a black leotard that displayed a leaner physique.

I lost myself and my confidence through gaining 30 lbs. in one year in front of millions of people on a Reality TV Show, she revealed. Here I am a year and a half later feeling sexy, confident in my own skin, and like the EMILY I am meant to be!

Last month, the Ohio native reflected on her health journey ahead of launching her new lifestyle website focused on recipes, fitness tips and training.

FINALLY feeling like myself again, she wrote on Instagram. Its taken a year and a half of ups and downs but finally at 44 years old Ive never felt more fit, healthy and in shape! And Im implant free!

Simpson has shared her fitness goals and accomplishments with her fans over the past few years, revealing in June 2019 that she had enrolled in a 12-week fitness program and was down 10 pounds.

The Bravo personality pointed to her severe arthritis and becoming really depressed as catalysts for her lack of working out in the past.

It was painful to move, so I basically stopped moving at all. Not a great idea. I gained 20-25 pounds over the past year and added more unnecessary weight to my hip which made it even harder to move and get around, she explained at the time, noting that she joined forces with trainer Paulina Taylor Hefferan to get into shape.

A year later, she said that starting her fitness journey was the best decision shes ever made.

Not only have I lost significant body fat and several inches, but Ive gained a newfound acceptance of my body, Simpson wrote via Instagram in June. I dont weigh myself very often because the number on the scale doesnt define me as a person nor is it wholly indicative of progress. I measure my progress and health by other methods of measurement such as endurance, strength.

She added: Ive changed physically but most importantly Ive changed mentally. Ive learned that weight loss doesnt have to be all in or nothing, you just have to do 1 thing better than the day before. The key to long term results is consistency and having someone in your corner cheering you on!

Simpson pointed out that shes had gains and losses but as of August, shes lost 16 pounds and her body fat percentage is 10 percent lower than the year prior.

Theres no right way to start, she wrote via social media. Theres no magic plan or magic pill. You just have to dig deep and make yourself a priority.
