Have you experienced foot pain while staying home? Doctors explain why – The National
Having a good start to the day is all about waking up on the right side of the bed. But what about if, when you place your feet on the ground for the first time in the morning, you're met with excruciating pain?
The long-term repercussions that being housebound might have on our health are still being evaluated. And one surprising, and underrated, problem is how being at home for hours on end can impact our foot health.
A sedentary lifestyle, weight gain and loss of stretching gives rise to foot stiffness and plantar fasciitis
Dr Harpal Jadeja
As Dr Harpal Jadeja, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital, puts it: We use our feet every day to get us around without thinking about them. They bear our weight, keep our balance and adapt to uneven surfaces, helping us move around and engage in day-to-day activities and sports. Despite the vital role they play, our feet, unfortunately, remain neglected until we feel pain and need relief.
According to Dr Jadeja, being homebound for months on end is having an impact on our feet, both in positive and negative ways.
By staying indoors, we have reduced our walking and weight-bearing activities. On one hand, this helps in the case of painful conditions like bunions and heel pain, he says. It also reduces the risk of foot-related injuries like sprains and fractures.
However, it can also lead to problems in the long run. Inactivity over a period of time can increase body weight which can lead to more degenerative changes in the weight-bearing joints, says Dr Jadeja. "Staying indoors also increases domestic chores such as cooking and washing dishes that require standing for a prolonged period. This may aggravate heel pain from plantar fasciitis."
Dr Prabodhan Pravin Potdar, specialist orthopaedics at Burjeel Day Surgery Centre, Al Reem Island, adds that there are many ways our feet are affected by the isolation period.
Lack of space around the house can lead to toe injuries. Meanwhile, a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain and loss of stretching gives rise to foot stiffness and plantar fasciitis.
According to both doctors, heel pain, like that caused by plantar fasciitis, is one of the most common foot complaints at the moment.
It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of protective tissue attached to the heel bone that fans out to the toes, is partially stretched or torn, leading to an inflammation of the tissue.
Tiles do not offer significant grip and the chances of having micro tears in the plantar fascia are quite high
Dr Prabodhan Pravin Potdar
Some of the most common causes of the condition are excessive activity, inactivity and sudden increase in weight over a short period of time. "It's ironic," says Dr Potdar, "because doing too much as well as doing too little might lead to this condition." And the prolonged isolation period may not be helping.
According to him, walking barefoot on hard tiles around the house contributes to the issue. Tiles do not offer significant grip and the chances of having micro tears in the plantar fascia are quite high, he says.
It can all lead to symptoms like a sharp, throbbing pain in the morning when one first places their feet on the floor. This pain might gradually improve with movement over the day. Other symptoms of the condition include a constant ache and stiffness of the foot, and swelling around the heel and sole.
Dr Potdar says wearing indoor footwear that has a firm grip can help. Carpeting also helps if it is throughout the house. Other treatments for plantar fasciitis include using a hot compress to increase blood flow to the area and enhance the healing of the micro tears. Stretching also helps, both from physiotherapy and from certain yoga positions.
"Avoid jumping or running during these episodes, and weight reduction by dietary means can also help. Visiting an orthopaedic surgeon is essential to confirm diagnosis since other less common conditions may present similarly."
Dr Jadeja recommends also having adequate rest during this period. "This is one thing that that will help many painful conditions of the foot and ankle, especially where injury and inflammation is concerned. Massage is also recommended."
If the pain persists, contact your doctor. When it comes to plantar fasciitis, physiotherapy and surgery may have to be recommended.
Finally, even as restrictions ease and more people get back to their normal lives, doctors recommend exercising precaution. Individuals getting back to active lifestyles after periods of inactivity run the risk of sustaining stress fractures or acute tendinitis, says Potdar.
Always better to be safe than sorry.

Exclusive: Taapsee Pannu’s Nutritionist shares about acid reflux and the RIGHT way to treat it – PINKVILLA
Taapsee Pannu's Nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal has shared important details about one of the common health issues called acid reflux.
Acid reflux is one of the common ailments that many people across the world suffer from. It happens when contents from our stomach move upwards in our esophagus. If the signs of acid reflux persist more than twice a week, then it means you may have a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is very important to treat it as it can lead to other health complications. Heartburn, sour or bitter taste, difficulty swallowing, breathing issues, at the back of the mouth, bloating, dysphagia, burping, hiccups, nausea, weight loss, wheezing, dry cough and hoarseness are the common signs.
We asked Taapsee Pannu's Nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal who is a Nutrition and Lifestyle Consultant, and Founder- Yuktahaar about acid reflux in detail and simple lifestyle changes to deal with it. She said, "The problem of acid reflux or heartburn is becoming more and more common. In my practice, I have realized that most people dont consider it a serious issue and hence, without thinking much, they pop an antacid and go about their day as usual. Until they realize that popping pills isnt helping in the long term and acid reflux no matter how insignificant an ailment it appears to be, does affect the overall quality of life."
"When I started working with Taapsee Pannu a few years back on her diet, getting to know how to deal with her acidity was one of the priorities for her. And why not? For an actress who is busy working round the clock, travels across time zones threw in, having to deal with the uncomfortable burning sensation from an acidic reflux every now and then would most certainly make life pretty difficult."
"Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines like Protein Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) that reduce your body's production of acid are great for symptom management, but long-term use of acid-suppressing medications can lead to nutrient deficiencies and increase your risk of food sensitivities/ intolerances, serious gut infections, mood imbalances like depression, anxiety and so on."
"Resorting to an antacid or acid-suppressing medication is like taking the batteries out of a beeping smoke detector and just wishing that all will be well. It may help with symptoms suppression, but the problem is far from being fixed by going this route. For digestive issues, we need to identify and work on root cause factors if achieving long term relief is the goal."
"Just within a few months of gut balancing protocol, Taapsees chronic acidity issue was resolved and like any other concerned daughter, she also got her mom to sign up with me so that we can work on her gut health too. In fact, during our recent Instagram live conversation, we discussed the issue of acid reflux in brief so that her fans and followers could benefit from it. Today, I am sharing my list of five major Dos and Donts for stomach acidity that both Taapsee and her mom continue to follow till today."
DOS AND DONTS by Nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal:
DONT- Do not skip meals or have long meal gaps
DO- Make sure you have planned your meals & eat every 2-3 hours
HERES WHY- It is assumed that acid reflux is caused by overactive or high stomach acid levels but paradoxically, more often than not, it is due to not having enough stomach acid. When acid levels are low, food gets into the stomach but isnt fully broken down. Decreased digestion causes fermentation of food, gas production and starts pushing through the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), causing acid reflux. One of the best ways to ensure optimal stomach acid production is to eat every 2-3 hours because every time you don't eat for long hours, the body produces less stomach acid leading to heartburn symptoms and conditions like GERD.
DONT- Do not eat till you are stuffed
DO- Eat only till you feel light and comfortable. A good way to begin is to eat five spoons lesser than you would have.
HERES WHY- Large quantities of food distend the stomach causing the valve (LES valve) between the stomach and food pipe to not close properly. This allows the acid in your stomach to travel upward. Remember the antacid TV ad of son-in-law overeating only to get nausea and acidity later?
DONT- Do not eat close to bedtime
DO- Eat your last meal of the day 2-3 hours before you go to bed
HERES WHY- Lying down soon after you eat triggers the backflow of acidic stomach contents into your food pipe causing heartburn and acidity.
DONT- Do not be deprived of sleep
DO- Make sure you get restful sleep for 7-8 hours.
HERES WHY- Sleeplessness can cause the valve between the stomach & food pipe to function improperly, allowing the acid in your stomach to travel upward.
DONT- Do not make friends with chronic stress
DO- Practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques every day
HERES WHY- Chronic stress not only decreases the production of stomach acid but also over activates the sympathetic nervous system that can hamper digestion and lead to acid reflux. Practicing deep breathing techniques will help you relax and cool off the over-activated nervous system.

High Fat Content of the Keto Diet: Is It a Health Concern? – Healthline
Though the keto diet may reduce insulin resistance and improve heart disease risk factors, other dietary patterns may be easier to adhere to.
Q: Is the high fat content of the keto diet a concern for people with certain health conditions like insulin resistance or heart disease?
The ketogenic or keto diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that many people use to promote weight loss and manage their blood sugar levels.
For example, studies show that the keto diet may aid weight loss, enhance blood sugar control, and improve heart disease risk factors like triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. The keto diet may also increase heart-protective HDL cholesterol (1).
Additionally, the keto diet may help reduce insulin resistance, a condition in which cells become resistant to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of diabetes (2).
Therefore, the high fat content of the keto diet might not necessarily be a concern for people with certain conditions like insulin resistance and heart disease.
However, although evidence suggests that following a keto diet may have metabolic benefits, such as reducing blood sugar and triglyceride levels, high quality, long-term studies exploring the relationship between keto dietary patterns and overall health are lacking (2).
Plus, the keto diet is highly restrictive and not typically necessary to promote weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, or reduce heart disease risk factors. In fact, less restrictive dietary patterns that focus on nutrient-dense foods and overall diet quality rather than macronutrient composition are usually a better option.
This is because keto diets are so low in carbs typically under 10% of your total calorie intake that theyre generally not sustainable long term (3).
On the other hand, the Mediterranean diet, a dietary pattern thats rich in fiber, protein, and healthy fats, has decades of scientific research supporting its ability to promote weight loss and reduce chronic disease risk not to mention good adherence scores (4).
While the keto diet may offer some health benefits, the same benefits can likely be achieved by following a less restrictive eating pattern that can be followed for life.

Keto vs Speed Keto diets – It’s not about which of them wins. It’s about your win – London Daily Post
Ketogenic diets have been surging in popularity recently among those who are comfortable with their high-fat, low-carb approach to health and weight loss. Hollywood celebrities, Silicon Valley trendsetters, and health marketers are among those promoting the low-carb, high-fat keto diet.
The keto diet is not without controversy, however. Some health practitioners feel that it cannot live up to its promises. But its recent spike in popularity shows no signs of abating in 2020, with the keto diet market now exceeding an incredible eight billion dollars in the U.S. alone.
Keto Diet Fast Facts:
How It Works
The ketogenic diet is centered around a dietary plan consisting of high amounts of fat, small amounts of protein, and low carbohydrates. It works by forcing the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. The diet was originally created to help treat severe forms of epilepsy in children; however, it has found mainstream success among those seeking to improve their health.
Under normal circumstances, dietary carbohydrates are converted by the body into glucose. In turn, this glucose travels around the body and is an important factor in providing fuel for the brain. When suboptimal amounts of carbohydrates are consumed, the liver begins converting fat into fatty acids, or ketone bodies. It is these ketones that pass into the brain and replace glucose as its energy source.
It was found that children had fewer epileptic seizures when they were on a keto diet. Almost 50% of children with severe forms of epilepsy experienced less frequent seizures when on a keto diet. It was even found that the effect remained even after stopping the diet.
Many believe that the keto diet is also effective for other types of neurological disorders, including Alzheimers disease, headaches, Parkinsons disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Rise of the Speed Keto Diet
Entrepreneur, Harlan Kilstein, is the creator of the Speed Keto diet plan. According to Kilstein, his personal interest in keto grew out of his desire to experience healthy weight loss. His public advocacy of the keto diet was marked by the publishing of his Completely Keto cookbook in 2018. He launched his Speed Keto program shortly after as a potential long-term solution for better health.
Harlan Kilsteins Speed Keto diet plan is a ready-made meal plan combined with a careful fasting schedule to produce rapid weight loss beyond what is known as the keto plateau, which is where many keto dieters hit a wall and stop obtaining weight loss results after several weeks or months on the basic keto diet.
Intermittent Fasting
Speed Keto is a hybrid diet combining the conventional ketogenic program with another type of dietary change known as intermittent fasting.
Intermittent fasting is an increasingly popular dietary plan involving no food consumption for a certain number of hours. For example, some intermittent fasting plans encourage dieters to eat only within an eight-hour window each day. This allows for 16 hours of fasting, while still eating some each day, making it far easier psychologically on the individual. Near the end of this period of fasting, the body switches into fat-burning mode. The changes forced upon the body at this time also allow the body to divert energy that would otherwise be spent in digestion into healing processes.
Some benefits of intermittent fasting include:
Gene expression: Intermittent fasting leads to functional changes in genes that help protect against many forms of disease and increase longevity.
Speed Keto vs. Regular Keto
When the body goes into fat-burning mode, it is known as ketosis. At this time, the body is focused on using fat for fuel, rather than sugar or glucose. This part of the Speed Keto diet is similar to the conventional ketogenic diet. The difference is the addition of intermittent fasting.
The goal of the Speed Keto diet is the incorporation of intermittent fasting. At some point during the Speed Keto program, dieters will be eating only one meal per day. This meal will be low in carbohydrates, contain adequate protein, and high-fat.
Keto Diet Critics
Although conventional keto diets and Speed Keto diets are extremely popular right now, the programs are not without their critics. Some doctors and health practitioners feel that the low-carb portion of the programs are unsustainable. Proponents of keto diets feel that every diet involves some level of willpower and habituation. Once dieters have spent some time with the Speed Keto plan, they tend to adapt and develop new habits that allow them to push through any temporary barriers.
Ultimately, the goal of any weight loss diet is to create a calorie deficit. Speed Keto helps people do just that. The reward comes in the form of reduced Body Mass Index (BMI) that has been scientifically proven to lower rates of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer.
Speed Keto Diet Adherents
Although the Speed Keto diet is not for everyone, practitioners of the diet provide mostly favorable reviews. Most dieters found that the diet helps increase their energy levels, boosts their mood, and changes their metabolism into fat-burning mode.
Patsy Goodell: Before Speed Keto, I had no energy and loved anything with sugar. Now on Speed Keto, I totally love it. I have energy, I sleep thru the night and I want to exercise, not HAVE to exercise.
Erin Bowman: Speed Keto gave me back what I thought I had lost. I found a whole world of possibilities in tricking my metabolism, eliminating inflammatory foods, and Im loving every minute of it.
Cathy Jelinek: Ive been enjoying Speed Keto. Recipes are easy to make and delicious! Ive also noticed extra energy throughout the day. And I must be losing inches as a couple of my pants are getting pretty baggy!! Lovin it!!
Speed Keto: The Takeaway
As with any diet, it is recommended that you first check with your primary health practitioner to ensure that you are physically able to follow a ketogenic diet like Speed Keto. Your results will depend upon your careful adherence to the diet protocols, getting adequate sleep, and shifting your body into ketosis to obtain the metabolic benefits of this innovative diet.

Nutritionist Reveals The Secret To Eating Healthy Sustainably, With Lesser Cravings – NDTV
Healthy eating tips: Practice moderation and portion control while eating
To practice healthy eating in a sustainable manner, mindful eating and a few more principles are required. Nutritionist Ishi Khosla, in an Instagram post, talks about a few principles of healthy eating that can help in maintaining your health, fitness levels and weight goals. Calorie-restrictive and weight loss diets aren't the ideal way to go. You needn't starve yourself and go to extremes just to lose a few kilos. Moderation is the key. Have you favourite dessert and even fried food at times. Maintaining a balance and eating everything you love, in controlled proportions, is the key to being healthy and fit.
In an Instagram post, Khosla talks about a few rules that can you help you live a healthy liftestyle with lesser cravings, mood swings and irritability.
Whatever you eat, practice portion control. This stands true for desserts, junk food, fried food and sugary drinks. Limit the intake of these foods to occasions only but do not starve yourself. "A small portion of dessert rather than the entire helping will be a good idea and is unlikely to conflict with your goals," writes Khosla in her post.

Maintain a balance. Avoid binging one meal but do not skip the other to make for it. "The principle of balance helps you undo the damage and lighten the next meal to compensate for the previous one, and this will ensure that you do not mess up your goals," says Khosla. You can also achieve balance by being physically active or even walking for an extra mile. Do not snack all day and eat less on meal times, recommends the nutritionist. She also adds that your diet should include fruits, vegetables and salads. "Alternate day fasting is both a traditional and scientific approach to balance out the excesses during the week," she suggests.

To be able to follow any diet plan in the long term, it is important that it has variety. Having variety in your diet also serves the purpose of giving you all the nutrients you need. Foods from all food groups should be a part of your diet. "For example, an apple is rich in vitamin E and poor in vitamin C while an orange is rich in vitamin C and poor in vitamin E. Eating both ensures that you get enough of both the nutrients," Khosla exemplifies.

Ford Government Given Failing Marks in Response to Recommendations on Long-Term Care COVID-19 Response in Joint Open Letter from more than 200…
TORONTO, June 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Ontario Health Coalition issued an open letter to Premier Doug Ford on May 28, 2020 calling for key improvements to safety and care in Ontarios beleaguered long-term care homes where more than 1,860 residents and staff have died as a result of COVID-19. Recent a number of media reports, accounts from families, and the military report have revealed that long-term care residents are suffering serious weight loss and decline or even dying of dehydration and malnutrition due to inadequate care. That the staffing crisis is now a full-blown emergency in long-term care is not an overstatement, reported the Coalition, which is hearing from the front-lines of workers and families of residents and is calling for immediate action.
In Quebec and British Columbia, governments have intervened to increase wages and provide full-time work to boost care levels. In recent weeks, Quebec set out to recruit 10,000 PSWs, offering $21 per hour for training and increasing wages to $26 per hour. They have more than 65,000 applicants and are well into the process. In Ontario, there has been no such response. In fact, the Health Coalition reports that it is hearing from front-line staff and families that staffing shortages are worse than ever with many more shifts unfilled even with unprecedented overtime. The Coalition held cross-province consultations on the staffing crisis in 2019 and wrote a report on its findings commissioned by Unifor in December that detailed the staffing crisis (including that virtually every home was working short every shift, worse on weekend and worse in the evenings) and made recommendations to address it. Today the Toronto Sun is reporting that the Ford governments Treasury Board twice, in the months leading into COVID-19, refused funding appeals to improve staffing levels. Staffing levels equate to care levels in long-term care: without enough staff, there is not enough time to bathe, feed, hydrate, reposition, and provide even the most basic care for residents, let alone provide care with residents and staff sick with COVID-19 and in isolation.
The Health Coalition issued the following report card today, grading the Ford government on its response to the key recommendations made in its open letter, sent a month ago, which has now been signed onto by more than 200 groups representing almost two million Ontarians. Premier Ford has not responded to the Coalitions letter despite the huge body of Ontarians represented by the groups that have jointly signed.

Keto Diet: How Safe and Effective is it? – Yahoo Singapore News
The keto diet (short for ketogenic diet) isa wildly popular weight loss diet.It is also controversial as it inverts the traditional balanced food pyramid. Instead of carbohydrate forming the bulk of ones calorie intake, it drastically restricts daily carbohydrate consumption to between 20g and 50g (less than a bowl of rice), and replaces it with protein and fat.
When the bodys first source of energy carbohydrate becomes unavailable, it then taps into the 500g of glycogen a form of glucose that serves as energy storage stored in the liver and muscles. Once that too is depleted, it turns to fat stores.
With a lot of weight loss attempts, the body fights back with hunger-adaptive hormones, which makes us want to eat more. That is why people regain weight. However, when your body breaks down fat, ketones are produced. These counteract hunger hormones and suppress hunger pangs, explained the Department of Endocrinologyfrom Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group.

Short-term studies have shown that people on this diet lose weight faster initially an average of 7 per cent of their weight in six months as compared to other low-fat diets. This can have a positive psychological effect on many dieters.
One problem, though, is people may over-indulge in processed meats like sausages or fatty cuts of meat, when they should go for lean types like fish and chicken, pick poly- and monounsaturated fat such as olive oil and avocado, and complex carbohydrates such as quinoa and oats.

A diet high in saturated fat has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, a low-fibre diet increases the risk of cancer, and a high-protein diet of meat and dairies has negative long-term effects on the kidney.
Those on the keto diet also run the risk of lacking important nutrients like vitamin B when they cut out carbohydrate or grains. So a multivitamin supplement is necessary.
When these guidelines are followed, the ketogenic diet is generally safe for most dieters in the short term. Whether such a diet is safe if followed over a long period is unclear as longer-term studies on its benefits and effects are not yet available.

The best [dietary] intervention for weight loss is a sustained one with both short-term and long-term health benefits, advised the SGH Endocrinology department. This involves a slow transition period of reintroducing some complex carbohydrates, learning new healthy eating habits, and exercising regularly to reduce sugar levels and hunger pangs.

Prader-Willi syndrome symptoms: What is Prader-Willi syndrome? – Express
Harvey Price, the son of Katie Price and Dwight Yorke, is the reason many Brits will have heard of Prader-Willi syndrome. He recently fell ill at his younger sister Princess birthday party and was sent to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. Harvey has a number of health concerns, so it isnt certain the illness is connected with Prader-Willi syndrome.
Prader-Willi syndrome is caused by a fault in a group of genes on chromosome number 15.
This happens by chance, and boys and girls of all ethnic background could be affected.
However, it is extremely rare for parents to have more than one child with Prader-Willi syndrome.
Both Prader-Willi syndrome and Angolan syndrome are caused by mutations in chromosome 15.
READ MORE- Boy who ate TOILET PAPER and 'DIRT' due to rare disease dies aged 11
This fault leads to a number of problems and is thought to affect a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.
The hypothalamus is responsible for producing hormones and regulating growth and appetite.
The typical features of Prader-Willi syndrome are delayed growth and persistent hunger.
There is no cure for Prader-Willi syndrome, but there are ways to manage the symptoms.
Prader-Willi syndrome causes a range of symptoms, learning difficulties, and behavioural problems.
Most cases are spotted shortly after birth and can be confirmed by carrying out genetic testing.
If a baby is very floppy at birth, they may be tested.

an excessive appetite and overeating, which can easily lead to dangerous weight gain restricted growth (children are much shorter than average) floppiness caused by weak muscles (hypotonia) learning difficulties lack of sexual development behavioural problems, such as temper tantrums or stubbornness
The key to caring for a child with this illness is trying to help them maintain a normal weight.
The child should have a health, balanced diet and avoid high-calorie treats as soon as the illness is recognised.
If you dont keep an eye on what they eat, they will become dangerously overweight.
A child with Prader-Willi syndrome can eat three to six times more than other children the same age and still feel hungry.
It will be challenging to limit their intake, and suffering children may behave badly to get food or hide and steal food.
The illness is not life-threatening, but it is easy for sufferers to spiral out of control and develop obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart failure or respiratory difficulties.
If the child becomes obese, they will die a lot younger than expected.
Prader-Willi syndrome can be managed and adults can have a good quality of life.
These adults who successfully control the illness could live a fully independent life with a normal life expectancy.

Olive Oil for Weight Loss: Is It Beneficial? – Healthline
Olive oil is made by grinding olives and extracting the oil, which many people enjoy cooking with, drizzling on pizza, pasta, and salad, or using as a dip for bread.
Some of the most well-known benefits of consuming olive oil include its ability to reduce inflammation, support heart health, and lower blood pressure. It may even have potential anticancer effects and protect brain health (1, 2, 3, 4).
This article reviews whether olive oil can be used to promote weight loss.
Many of olive oils benefits have been observed in the context of following a Mediterranean diet.
This eating pattern is characterized by a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, potatoes, legumes, nuts, and seeds. While the diet often incorporates fish, the main fat source is olive oil, and it also limits red meat and sweets (5, 6, 7).
Olive oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), which have one unsaturated carbon bond in their chemical composition. MUFAs are typically liquid at room temperature.
One older 4-week study found men with overweight or obesity who replaced saturated fat with monounsaturated fats in their diets experienced small but significant weight loss, compared with a saturated-fat-rich diet, despite no major change in total fat or calorie intake (8).
More recent research agrees that unsaturated fatty acids are likely more beneficial than saturated fats when it comes to healthy weight maintenance (9).
Diets rich in monounsaturated fats have also been shown to prevent weight gain and the accumulation of fat in animal studies (10, 11).
Furthermore, olive oil is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which have been long studied for their ability to play a role in healthy weight loss and maintenance (12, 13, 14).
MCTs are triglycerides that contain fatty acids comprising 612 carbon atoms. Theyre broken down quickly and absorbed by your liver, where they can be used for energy.
While some studies have found a positive effect of MCTs on weight loss, others have found no effect.
Still, one study compared MCTs with long-chain triglycerides, finding that MCTs resulted in greater production of certain appetite-regulating hormones like peptide YY, which promotes feelings of fullness (15).
Other research indicates that MCTs may encourage weight loss by increasing calorie- and fat-burning in the body (16, 17).
