Monday Medical: Weigh and Win rewards health

By Christine McKelvie / For the Steamboat Today Sunday, July 1, 2012

If you are planning to lose weight this year, LiveWell Northwest Colorado has an amazing deal for you. The Weigh and Win program is free, fast and easy. Plus, it actually pays you to lose weight.

That might sound too good to be true, but Barb Parnell, community coordinator of LiveWell Northwest Colorado, explains that it is for real.

LiveWell Northwest Colorados mission is to reduce obesity in Routt County by introducing healthy eating and active living choices and empowering residents to select them, Parnell said.

Weigh and Win is a free program that will help you to incorporate healthy eating and active living into your daily routine.

This online program provides cash rewards to individuals who continue to lose weight until they have achieved a healthy body mass index. People who already have a healthy BMI can benefit by setting fitness and nutrition goals and receiving coaching.

We are fortunate to bring Weigh and Win to the region to help our community be aware of BMI, to understand the implications of unhealthy BMI and to provide resources for those who desire to make lifestyle changes to improve BMI, Parnell said.

The sign-in process may be done at http://www.weighandwin.com, but you must go to a Weigh and Win kiosk to complete enrollment. Starting today and continuing through July 31, the kiosk will be located at Yampa Valley Medical Center.

The kiosk will be near the main lobby, in the hall outside our Community Health Resource Center and across from SportsMed, YVMC Wellness Director Lisa Bankard said. Look for a kiosk and scale located behind a bright-colored banner, which serves as a privacy screen.

Yes, weighing in is required if you want to take advantage of the incentives. The scale will measure an accurate weight and your photo will be taken. The process should take about one minute. You then will receive an email prompting you to enroll in Weigh and Win and identify your health goals.

Can you eat late and still lose weight?

Lately we've heard the only thing that matters to your waistline is how much you eat. But there's a growing body of research that says when you eat really does make a difference in how much you weigh.

"Your body is more prone to burn fat at certain times of day and store fat at other times," said Satchin Panda, associate professor in the Regulatory Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Cali.

New studies reveal that to burn the most fat, you need to go 12 hours without eatingsay, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. So it's smart to time your calorie intake accordingly. Read on for the science-backed rules that will help you use the clock to shed excess pounds.

To keep pounds off, don't eat after dark

Before electricity and all-night diners, we humans used to spend a long stretch every night without food passing our lips. "Staying up and eating late is a very recent phenomenon in human history," Panda noted. So our metabolisms are hardwired to expect a nightly fast, which is a key time for your body to burn fat.

Here's how that works: During the day, your brain and muscles use some of the calories you eat for fuel, and the rest gets stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. At night, your body converts that glycogen into glucose and releases it into your bloodstream to keep your blood-sugar levels steady while you sleep. Once the stored glycogen is gone, your liver starts burning fat cells for energy. Yes, you read that rightyou burn fat while you sleep.

The catch: "It takes a few hours to use up the day's glycogen stores," Panda said. So if you snack until midnight and sit down to your breakfast of oatmeal or eggs at 7 a.m., your body may never get the opportunity to burn any fat before you start reloading your glycogen stores again.

It doesn't help that you're also likely to overeat when you're up lateindeed, night owls consume an average of 248 calories more per day than those who go to bed earlier, and most of those excess calories rack up after 8 p.m., according to a 2011 study published in the journal Obesity.

"Willpower is lower when you're sleepy," explained study author Kelly Baron, a clinical health psychologist at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "So if you're eating in the middle of the night, you're more likely to overeat and make poor food choices."

On the other hand, Panda said, "eating only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and then not eating for at least 12 hours, should give your body enough time to burn all of the stored glycogen plus some fat every night."

Positivity helps woman lose 190 pounds

MILTON - Susan Cain faced numerous challenges to lose more than 190 pounds.

Working in the fast-food industry meant she had to skip the high-calorie, readily available menu items.

She lived on a tight budget and still managed to buy healthy foods. She didn't have a vehicle, so she carried groceries from a bus stop to her home.

Cain said it was all worth it and her current goal is to keep her weight under control as she continues to reap the health benefits.

"At my heaviest, I weighed 365 pounds," said Cain, who now weighs 174 and is 5 feet 8 inches tall.

She used to live in sweatpants and sweatshirts - she wore a size 6X sweatshirt.

"I couldn't find a dress to fit me. Now I wear a size 10 dress," she said.

Her weight fluctuates a couple of pounds above or below her goal of 176, but she does not let it get out of control.

Her blood pressure is no longer a problem, and she can climb stairs without stopping to catch her breath.

"My health has improved almost 100 percent; I can do more," said Cain, who added she also feels better mentally.

'It's fun living now'

186 pounds ago, John Borgstrom of Roseville, Minnesota was just plaintired. All the time. "I was missing out on so much. No energy. No walking. No sports. Cutting the grass was tough. I'd have to rest, take a nap afterward. Just lethargic all the time." Not that the feelings were new to him. He was 64 and, "I'd been heavy since I was a child. I'd gain weight, then I'd lose weight, then I'd gain weight."

His physician had placed him on blood pressure medication, and he knew he had to "do something for face diabetes."

Linda, John's wife of 39 years, knew it, too. "I saw him going downhill because of his weight and was concerned about 'what's next?'"

So she took action. Gently. But action, nonetheless. "We had investigated Medifast online, so I decided to visit the Roseville Weight Loss Center. I met with them, liked them, and told John about it. Then I set the material on the table and just left it there. About a week later, I said was going back to learn more about it, and asked if he wanted to come along. He said yes."

Obesity screenings for all American adults? Not so fast, some say

Screening American adults for obesity -- the latest recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force -- is easy as pie: Take a patient's height (in meters), divide it by his weight, squared (in kilograms). If the resulting number is 30 or more, the patient gets the modern equivalent of a scarlet letter -- "O" for obese -- imprinted on his forehead (well, on his medical records).

It's what comes after this that's kicking up debate.

If a patient's BMI is over 30, the new recommendation advises, the doctor needs to tell the patient that obesity puts him at much higher risk of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers but that weight loss and lifestyle changes can help.

Then the physician is to offer the patient, or refer her to, an intensive weight-loss program that teaches her nutrition, motivates her to exercise at least 150 minutes a week, shows her how to track her fat and calorie intake and helps her brainstorm ways to overcome obstacles to dieting.

If the Obama Administration's overhaul of healthcare is still intact after Thursday's Supreme Court ruling, obesity screening and referrals to an intensive, high-quality weight-loss program will become standard care for all patients. And those sessions -- at least 12 and as many as 29 in the first year -- also will have to be fully covered by insurance.

The federal task force that wrote the recommendation says that such measures are necessary in light of the fact that just more than 1 in 3 American adults is obese, which heralds an epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease to come if not stemmed. The new recommendation could become a cornerstone of the nation's "war on obesity."

But not everybody likes the recommendation.

Linda Bacon, a nutritionist, exercise physiologist and psychotherapist who wrote the book Healthy at Every Size, thinks it's time to stand down the war on obesity and curb the hurtful, bellicose talk about fat people. She is one of a renegade group of scientists and healthcare practitioners "who question the dogma that you must be thin to be healthy -- and that encouraging people to lose weight is helpful."

Reacting to the federal task force's recommendations, Bacon said they'll not only be a bad investment -- people who lose weight overwhelmingly regain it -- but the recommendations will also backfire: Discouraged Americans who have lost and then regained a few pounds feel bad about themselves, stop their daily power-walk and resort to binge-eating and other disorders that come with an unhealthy preoccupation with food.

"There's a very simple alternative that USPSTF could have offered us: They could easily promote the lifestyle habits they think are valuable for health and well-being -- not weight loss," Bacon said. People of so-called healthy weight who haven't exercised in forever would be told to get up and move. People who are overweight or obese by BMI standards but who eat healthfully and exercise regularly would be left alone.

Obesity: A losing battle?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- We know that obesity is a huge problem, but we continue to lose the battle against it. So what makes fighting fat so hard? "We sit at a desk all day, we eat fast food for lunch, then we go back to sit at a desk, then we go home and watch television," said fitness and nutrition expert Michael Kenik. "We're just a less active society,"

Less active and less likely to make healthy food choices. Avid exerciser Drew Beeler added, "With the way people eat now, everything is fast food, and unfortunately that type of food doesn't really lead to a healthy lifestyle."

Kenik continued, "There are a lot of lower income people and they're eating less healthy foods. You're not going to Earth Fare and buying organic foods and making healthier meals, you're buying the less expensive fast food dinner for your family and then it becomes a continuing cycle. It's an overweight parent that leads to an overweight child."

36% of American adults are severely overweight. If we continue the current trend, almost half of us will be obese by 2030. Obesity can lead to health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, even death. But there is some good news. "You can always lose weight. It's just taking baby steps and going the right direction," said Kenik.

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, swapping whole grains for white flour and working out for 30 minutes most days can make a big difference. "If you don't get out and work and walk and exercise, you're just going to get worse. You have to make an effort to do it," said Teena Jones, who works out whenever she can.

If you are looking to lose weight, make sure you check with your doctor before you start a fitness regiment.

Weight Loss Supplements Featuring Green Coffee Bean Extract Get Media Exposure by Nation's Most Recognized TV Doctor

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 25, 2012

As seen on Dr Oz TV, Green Coffee Bean Extract sparked the onset of one of the biggest weight loss discussions and supplement debates of the year.

As summer sets in and those looking to lose excess weight faster with quick fixes or extra boosts, choosing a weight loss supplement containing pure green coffee bean extract may be the best choice, and heres why.

The "latest and greatest miracle way to lose weight fast and easy" exploded into the supplement industry with sufficient science, literature, and belief like no other product has done before.

But what is all the fuss about? Lets walk down the path of setting the record straight about green coffee extract for weight loss as it all starts with the science involved.

What is it? Its the pure extract of raw green coffee beans which contain a beneficial nutrient compound known as chlorogenic acid.

While the initial research is impressive, the green coffee bean extract science was fueled by a study examining the health effects of pure chlorogenic acid as an isolated ingredient in a recent double blind, placebo controlled atmosphere (the gold-standard of clinical studies) involving individuals of all weight sizes.

After nearly 3 months of completed evaluation, the University controlled clinical study was lead to believe green coffee bean extract can boost the bodys natural ability to burn fat faster and regulate blood-sugar levels while supplying the body with extra healing antioxidants.

These were only the highlights of the green coffee extract health benefits discovered in this small, but promising pilot study.

The scientific information was later leaked and shared at the American Chemical Societys 243rd annual meeting, indicating the pure green coffee bean extract is set to take on a much longer and larger study involving more participants for further evaluation and summation.

Pol headed to prison hopes to lose weight

OXFORD There will be no prison tattoo for Michael A. Fox.

But the former longtime Butler County commissioner and state legislator said he hopes to come out of prison in four years much lighter and healthier.

On Thursday, less than 24 hours before he is to report to the Federal Medical Center correctional institution Lexington, Ky., Fox talked to The Enquirer about heading to prison and the public scandal that put him there.

He still denies doing anything wrong.

My number one goal is to lose weight, said Fox, who has gained 130 pounds since the federal case against him was pending.

The feds are going to be so considerate and nice to me. They are sending me to a fat farm and theyre going to pay for it. I cant afford it. Could you ask for a nicer bunch of people?

Although he was sentenced in March, U.S. District Judge Sandra Beckwith allowed Fox to surrender to prison by Friday so he could recover from a recent full-knee replacement.

Fox lost his bid to serve the four-year sentence on home incarceration. Sentencing was delayed for months as Fox tried to persuade the judge that he was too sick to go to prison because of his morbid obesity and a list of other ailments, including heart and vascular problems.

The 63-year-old Oxford resident, had accepted the prison term in a plea agreement in early 2011. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud involving a $460,000 payment he received from longtime attorney pal Robert C. Schuler in exchange for helping Schulers company secure a $1 million fiber-optics contract with Butler County in 2002.

Fox also pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return. As part of the deal, four charges of public corruption were dismissed involving alleged kickbacks Fox received from businesses to get them county business.
