'Fit2Fat2Fit' Author Drew Manning's Top 5 Weight-Loss Mistakes to Avoid

A little more than a year ago, personal trainer Drew Manning stopped working out, and started eating fast food, white bread, sugary cereal and soda.

Manning, a self-proclaimed fitness addict, started the weight-gain journey to better understand what his overweight clients go through. He let himself go completely, and chronicled the process in video blog on his website, Fit2Fat2Fit.com.

Manning gained 23.5 pounds by week 4. As the weeks progressed, his confidence and his health took a downturn.

He started to get winded easily, and his glucose level and blood pressure were high. Its getting a little scary, he said in one of his video blogs.

Mannings wife, Lynn, was prepared to see the physical changes in her husband, but didnt expect the emotional and personality changes that came with the weight gain.

His self-confidence, that completely went away and depleted, she said, explaining that he was becoming lethargic, lazy, not helping around the house.

I was in denial at first until she kept pointing out the things I was doing, Manning said today on Good Morning America. But I did become lazier. I had less energy so I did become exhausted and I kept seeing how it affected our relationship because of that. And so thats where the biggest surprise was, the emotional [part].

When Manning started his experiment on May 7, 2011, he had a 34.5-inch waist and 17-inch neck, and he weighed 193 pounds. Six months later, he had a 48-inch waist, 19-inch neck and he weighed 265 pounds. His clothes didnt fit.

Jessica Simpson and Other Celebs Making Big Cash with Weight Loss Deals

Jessica Simpson made the rumors official: She's signed on to lose the post-baby pounds with Weight Watchers.

"So excited to be part of the Weight Watchers family," she tweeted on May 30.

The singer has reportedly ditched fast food to get ready for the weight loss, but she's still considering which trainer she'll use to whip herself into shape. The two options are reportedly Danny Musico, her fiance Eric Johnson's trainer, and Mike Alexander, the man who got her into shape for 2005's "Dukes of Hazard," according to US Weekly.

"As soon as Jessica heals from the C-section, she is extremely determined to get back in the gym and work out," a source told US Weekly. "She wants to show the world and is excited to do it."

It's not confirmed how much weight she wants to lose with her $4-million Weight Watchers endorsement deal - we've heard anywhere from 60 lbs. to close to 100 lbs. However, we do know that she'll have plenty of motivation since other celebrities have dropped the lbs. with help of weight loss program endorsements.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson is basically the face of Weight Watchers these days. The singer dropped 80 lbs. on the program - it's like she just emerged one day with a dramatically smaller frame. According to a post on Weight Watchers, Hudson's did it by eating foods like Kashi GoLean Crunch Cereal, skim milk, sweet potatoes and lots of Greek yogurt.

Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley came out in January saying that Weight Watchers had helped him drop 38 lbs. off his famously hefty frame. However, he told fellow TNT sports announcers Reggie Miller and Kevin Harlan that it was all a scam.

"I thought this was the greatest scam going-getting paid for watching sports, this Weight Watchers thing is a bigger scam," he said, thinking that the microphones were off. He received some flack for the comment, though it seems like he meant that earning money for doing something he'd do for free - like eating - is just like getting money for something else he loves, sports.

Weight-loss tips from someone who should know

David Kirchhoff still trembles and sweats at the sight of ice cream.

Perhaps thats what makes him the perfect person to run Weight Watchers, one of the biggest weight-loss companies in the world. He knows what its like to struggle with the scale, and now he can say he wrote the book on it literally.

Mr. Kirchhoff, 45, president and chief executive officer of Weight Watchers International Inc., spent a grand total of nine years losing about 45 pounds. He became a member of the Weight Watchers program after becoming an employee of the company in 1999. At that time, he was clinically obese, weighing 242 pounds, with high cholesterol. Over the next nine years, he set about losing the excess weight, including after being named company CEO in 2006.

During that time, he learned a thing or two about how to get motivated, why men shouldnt be afraid of talking about weight-loss struggles, and why its important to never feel deprived all topics he covers in his new book, Weight Loss Boss. He spoke to The Globe and Mail about the lessons he has learned, and why people should cut Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who recently gave mixed messages about his public commitment to lose 50 pounds, some slack.

Its time for men to talk about their body issues

Mr. Kirchhoff said he was inspired to go public with his weight-loss story because so few men do. Weight-loss companies and products have typically been geared toward women, but men are just as affected by issues related to being overweight or obese.

I will admit at first it felt a little bit off and vulnerable to put myself out there, Mr. Kirchhoff said. Yet I think in a positive way the discussion around obesity is becoming less and less focused on weight and body image and more and more focused on the health. The reasons for doing that are as strong for men as they are for women.

The ground appears to be shifting, he said, with more men being targeted by weight-loss companies and also more willing to talk about the issue.

Taking nearly a decade to reach goal weight isnt a bad thing

Mr. Kirchhoff said the most positive feedback he has received about his book is over the fact he stuck with his weight-loss plan, even though it took nine years to lose 45 pounds and reach his goal.

Jessica Simpson Bans Fast Food In A Bid To Lose Weight

Jessica Simpson has put a ban on all fast food in an effort to lose her baby weight.

The Fashion Star judge has signed a deal to become the face of Weight Watchers, but that's not the only reason that Jess has put a stop to convenience food, as she only wants the best nutrients for her daughter.

According to a source, Jess is keen to stay super-healthy while she's still breast-feeding Maxwell, who was born last month.

"She's breast-feeding Max and wants her to get the best nutrition," a source told Us Weekly. Whereas there was a time during her pregnancy when Jess would gorge on buttered Pop Tarts and Macoroni and cheese, no more, says the insider: "She has to cut down on fast food. Besides, it's a great way to jump-start the massive diet ahead."

But Jessica won't be alone on the WW plan as she's managed to rope a few of her pals in, she revealed on Facebook: "The cool thing about [Weight Watchers] is that it focuses on healthy habits for the long-term (and I can still indulge in my guilty pleasures every now and then, too)."

"I have actually gotten a group of friends together who are going to be doing it with me."

Weight Loss Success: Aaron Detweiler Cut Out Fast Food And Lost 75 Pounds

How I Gained It: In my early 20s I was in really good shape, but after I started working full time I lost all ambition for working out. I would eat fast food almost daily for lunch, and even had more days than I wish to count where I had it for lunch and dinner. I work in an office, so on top of my horrible eating habits, I was in a chair eight hours a day and after work would just go home and eat dinner and watch TV. The scale slowly climbed -- first to 220 then 240, and I kept telling myself I wouldn't get heavier than that. In June of 2010, after a vacation to Texas, I got home and the scale read 263.

Breaking Point: After a few months of telling myself I was going to lose all the weight every Monday only to be back to my old habits by Tuesday, I got to the point where it all clicked one week in November of 2010, and I haven't looked back.

How I Lost It: The first few months were just eating healthy and completely eliminating fast food and snacking at night. I dropped around 30 pounds in six weeks by just doing these simple things. The first week was really difficult, but after I developed my new eating routine it never even fazed me.

During the week, my dinners are either chicken or fish with rice or pasta and a lot of raw veggies. On the weekends, I will loosen up a little with what I eat, but I try not to overdo it on portions if I do eat something unhealthy. Usually lunch is either a tuna sandwich or a leftover chicken breast and veggies from the night before. I always eat breakfast, either eggs or oatmeal, and I hardly ever snack between meals. I found hrough logging food on myfitnesspal that just a handful of snacks here and there throughout the day can easily add up to 300 to 400 calories, and you don't even know it.

Once I began to see my body changing it kept the fire alive and pushed me even harder. After the first few months I began lifting weights and running, which sped up my weight loss. I was down to 210 pounds by March of 2011. I have slowly been losing the last 20 pounds by working out five days a week, running and lifting. I started the process wanting to get to 200 pounds, and when I got there, I wasn't satisfied. Now I want to get in the best shape of my life.

Now, I have 20 times the energy I used to have. At my heaviest just playing nine holes of golf, even with a cart, would make me tired for the rest of the day. I can run around all day and rarely get tired. I'm so thankful I finally committed to doing this now, because I was going down an unhealthy path that could have led anywhere. I've completely rebooted everything I knew about eating and will carry these principles with me for the rest of my life. When I think back to how I used to eat and how lazy I was, I still get mad at myself, but I am thankful I was given the strength to correct it and start over before it was too late.
