Name: John McCarthy Age: 35 Height: 6'1" Before Weight: 311 pounds
How I Gained It: I was often encouraged to "put some meat on those bones" as a teenager. After getting married, having a child and beginning a career in a sedentary role, the weight just sort of snuck up on me gradually over the past 10 years.
I did lose weight one other time. In February of 2009, I weighed 300 pounds. I lost 80 pounds by June of that year. But by February 2010 I was 269 pounds again, and gradually gained it all back, and more.
I'd start every weekday at Dunkin' Donuts, and get two donuts and a large iced coffee with cream and sugar. Sometimes I'd have no lunch at all, and I'd have fast food at least three times a week. I also drank a lot of soda, maybe as much as an entire two-liter bottle, plus two or three 20-ounce bottles a day.
I was consistently tired, I couldn't do the things I wanted to do with my son and I felt old. My doctor told me I had high blood pressure and was likely going to have an issue with diabetes if I continued on the path I was on. Otherwise, I was in good health; the doctor told me I needed to lose some weight and take care of myself before that luck ran out.
Breaking Point: On Memorial Day weekend I made the choice to lose the weight to be a better example to my son. In June, I joined a gym and changed my diet forever. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I knew I was too young to feel that old. Clearly I was setting a bad example with my poor eating habits and lack of activity. I was tired of watching. I knew my son would remember I was always there to support his athletics or to take him places, but it wasn't enough. I wanted to get out there and play with him, run, hike and join him.
How I Lost It: With no trainer, nutritionist or fad diets, I've lost 130 pounds using tried and true methods. I eat from the farm not the factory, I drink at least eight glasses of water a day, I get eight hours of sleep a night and I walk a lot.
I have always been a walker -- I enjoy it. When I made the choice to lose the weight, the first thing I did was go for a walk. I walked three miles that day, and I was exhausted. Now I walk four or more miles, three to five times a week, and on the weekends seven to 10 miles a day.
By September, just 87 days later, I'd lost 81 pounds! Today, I've lost 130 pounds, and I'm keeping it off! I haven't gained back any of the weight I've lost. I started 2012 in the best health of my life. My doctor has praised me for my health and said I'm no longer at risk for preventable issues. I was lucky to have a doctor who didn't prescribe a "magic" pill to fix my health issues. He was certain that a good diet and exercise would put me on track, and he was right. I feel great today.

Personalized Intervention Helps Obese People Keep The Weight Off
Durham, NC - Regular medical feedback, self-monitoring and a set of personalized goals can help obese patients in a primary care setting lose weight and keep it off, according to a two-year study.
While more than 30 percent of Americans are obese, only about a fifth of them receive counseling treatment from their primary care providers to help them lose weight.
A Duke University-led study reveals that the low-cost mix of behavior-change strategies that also included optional group meetings and interactive phone and Web apps can help obese adults control their weight and blood pressure more effectively.
"The study was conducted in the primary care setting. That's important because primary care providers, particularly those who treat high-risk patients, don't have many tools for treating obesity," said lead author Gary Bennett, associate professor of psychology and global health at Duke and director of the university's Obesity Prevention Program (www.bennettlab.org).
The randomized trial involved 365 obese adults who were receiving treatment for hypertension at three Boston community health centers. Researchers selected participants who have some of the highest obesity rates in the world and have traditionally been the most challenging to treat.
Nearly 99 percent were low-income racial/ethnic minorities, with 71 percent black, 13 percent Hispanic and 68.5 percent female. The average age of all participants was 54.5; 33 percent did not finish high school.
The study divided participants into two groups: One group received traditional health care through general physicians at the community health centers plus a self-help booklet; the other received guidance through the model designed by the research team that promoted weight loss and hypertension self-management.
Participants in the intervention program selected goals to change behaviors in 14 areas, divided into three categories: dietary (for example, avoid sugary drinks, fast food, high-calorie snacks); physical activity (walk 10,000 steps a day, get at least 20 minutes of nonstop brisk physical activity most days); and lifestyle (watch no more than two hours of TV a day, take blood pressure medicine properly).
After 24 months, the intervention group lost an average about 2.2 pounds more than those receiving traditional care. The intervention group also improved blood pressure control and slowed increases in systolic blood pressure, both of which can dramatically lower risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke.
"Participants lost a modest amount of weight in the first six months, but they kept the weight off over a two-year period. That's important because we believe that stopping weight gain is an important strategy in preventing obesity-associated diseases, including hypertension and diabetes," Bennett said.

It's all in our heads. That's the consensus among a growing number of experts about our relationship with food.
Whilst many think junk food is the cause of an unhealthy lifestyle, it is the way people think about food and dieting that makes it so hard for them to manage their weight, says psychologist, Dr Louisa Hoey. Australians looking to successfully lose weight, and keep it off, need to address their way of thinking, and change their relationship with food.
This does not diminish the importance of healthy eating or exercise. But, in an industry that's growing as fast as our waist bands - $790 million dollars in Australia alone, according to IBIS World - there's a missing link.
Experts are increasingly aware that emotional reactivity and thoughts impact our food choices and often override knowledge of what we should be eating. "Many of the people I see are very educated about nutrition," says Dr Hoey. "What they are not realising is the impact of their mind."
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition negative thoughts breed negative outcomes. "As in the case of an individual who overeats thinks, 'I've blown my diet,' and then proceeds to eat even more secondary to feelings of failure and hopelessness."
This idea resonates with Mark*, a member of Overeaters Annonymous, who has struggled with his weight since childhood.
"It's about the food you eat of course, but it's not about the food," he says. "It's about shame, guilt, pain, fear, resentment and jealousy. All of those experiences bring up a 'hunger' and food takes the edge off.
"Being told to eat less, eat better or exercise more is great for [some], but [I've found it] completely useless."
Instead, positive body image and sustainable weight loss starts with addressing negative spirals of thought and becoming aware of your relationship with food, Hoey says. Having a dysfunctional relationship is not uncommon.

700-pound man's plea for help goes viral

Trapped in his own body.
A San Francisco area man is so desperate to lose weight, he posted a plea for help on YouTube. That video has gone viral in the past 24 hours.
And offers to help are already pouring in.
"I spend most of my days watching TV right here from usually about noon to about 2, 3 in the morning, going to bed, repeating the same thing," said Robert Gibbs.
On his 23rd birthday, at 700 pounds, Robert Gibbs says he is a prisoner in his own body.
"I have to slide forward to get off this couch," said Gibbs. "I'm just trapped and there's no way out."
Something clicked one night for the Livermore man who has struggled with his weight since the age of four, even being hospitalized twice. In a desperate moment, as he lay in bed unable to get himself out, Gibbs created a YouTube video.
"I'm 23, and I've never had a life," said Gibbs in his online pea for help. "This is my last chance, my last hope, one of them. I am really scared I'm not going to be able to watch my niece and nephew grow up."
Gibbs says he is beyond helping himself. He is on disability and may suffer from depression.

MANILA, Philippines - An obese man went to see a doctor and asked: ''Doc, I'm too heavy. How can I lose weight?'' The doctor replied, ''Do some fasting. Eat a meager diet daily, consisting of a little rice, fish, and vegetables.'' The man replied: ''Do I take that before or after meals?'' Obviously, that's not reducing but adding meals.

Almost all world religions give an honored place to fasting, but not the kind that stout man meant in the above story. Legend says Buddha grew so thin from fasting that he was able to touch his backbone when he pressed his stomach. The Muslims also fast during the season of Ramadan.
Others fast for esthetic reason, that is, to look younger, slimmer, and more beautiful. The reason Catholics fast during Lent is to make penance or atone for their sins. It is done to imitate Jesus' own 40-day fast in the desert.

A DIFFERENT FASTING. There is, however, another meaning of fasting. The prophet Isaiah links fasting to social justice. Listen to this: ''Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance that a man bow his head like a reed and lie in sackcloth and ashes?

''Do you call this a fast? This, rather, is the fasting I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke, setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them. (Isaiah 58:5-7).

Those who are better-off must look for ways of sharing with the poor. As someone said, ''We must live simply so others may simply live.''

LIVERMORE (CBS 5) A 700-pound Livermore mans plea for help to lose weight has become a viral sensation on YouTube in less than 24 hours.
Robert Gibbs, who turned 23 on Friday, said he is a prisoner in his won body.
I spend most of my days right here, watching TV. Gibbs said from his couch.
On Thursday, something clicked for the Livermore man who has struggled with his weight since the age of four. He has also been hospitalized twice. As Gibbs was stuck in bed, he recorded the video.
This is my last chance, my last hope, one of them. I really scared Im not going to be able to watch my niece and nephew grow up, Gibbs said in the video.
Gibbs said he is beyond helping himself. He is on disability and may suffer from depression. To save money and feed his food addiction, Gibbs often eats fast food.
His plea for help did not fall on deaf ears. In 24 hours, his video had 200,000 hits. Gibbs also received calls from news stations around the world. During an interview with CBS 5, he also received a phone call from a producer representing weight loss guru Chris Powell.
