I Lost 100 Pounds And Kept It Off For 12 Years With This Calorie Deficit And Les Mills Workouts – Women’s Health

My name is Kari (@aspire.rise.achieve), and I'm 32 years old. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I work as a support worker for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. I struggled with my weight my whole life until I decided to start eating nutrient-dense foods, stay in a calorie deficit, and work out with Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump classes.

Before my weight-loss journey began, I had been overweight my entire childhood and teenage years. I remember getting teased starting as young as 6 years old, which was a struggle. I knew I looked different and wasnt happy with my weight but I lacked the understanding of how to make a change.

Once I was old enough to walk to the nearby store to buy a snack after school, the unhealthy choices became more frequent and accessible. This was when my problem with weight got worse. I always felt like my weight held me back from trying new things or meeting new people. I absolutely dreaded gym class. I couldn't find clothes in my size anywhere except at specialty plus-size stores that only carried adult styles of clothingnot what a teenager would want to wear to school.

I was at my heaviest around 16 years old, and I couldn't believe I saw 300 pounds on the scale. I knew it was a big problem, but I felt stuck. I just thought that was what my life was going to look like. I didn't believe I could change because I had never known anything else.

I also started having health problems. I had blood work done that showed signs of pre-diabetes, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol, as well as a hormone imbalance. I wanted to do something about my weight, so I'd try to eat more nutritious foods, but never stayed consistent.

At that point, my knees always hurt and would make grinding sounds as I walked up the stairs. I had no energy and was unhappy most of the time.

I had made many previous failed attempts to lose weight without success, but I knew this time was different. I was going to make a lasting change and lose weight. I researched and learned about the basics of good nutrition, calorie/energy balance, and exercise.

On May 18, 2008, I started applying the things I was learning to my lifestyle.

As a college student, I could also do it without it costing me a lot of money. I didnt want a quick fix or a fad diet that would result in regaining the weight back. So I focused on staying in a calorie deficit, learning to read nutrition labels, and becoming more aware of my consumption. I focused on eating nutrient-dense foods as much as possible, but still allowed flexibility since holidays and food-focused events and gatherings will always be a part of life.

Once I started my second year of college, I learned that students had free gym memberships to the campus fitness center. I had never worked out in a gym in my life, but I was very intrigued and joined. I started going every morning, Monday to Friday at 6 a.m., before my full day of classes and evening work. After graduation I joined a different gym, and Ive been there for the last 12 years.

It's a mixed martial arts inspired group fitness class. After I had my first baby in 2015, the group fitness instructor reached out and encouraged me to consider taking instructor training. I taught classes at my gym for about a year. I still do Les Mills BodyCombat and BodyPump workouts to this day virtually, along with running and lifting weights four days a week.

Through getting married and having two babies, I remain proud of how much my lifestyle has changed permanently. After having my first baby, I lost the weight postpartum within the first year. However, my second child had serious health issues, and after giving birth in 2018, I am now re-losing some weight from that pregnancy.

I advocate for sustainable weight-loss methods, because had I not placed focus on the education of nutrition and my body, I may not have been able to maintain it through so many major life changes. Now that things are settled, I am finally caring for myself again. I hope my story will help others believe in themselves, too.

All you need to know about intermittent fasting – Times of India

There are several ways of doing intermittent fasting. In some, you eat either very little or nothing at all. The 5 most popular kinds of intermittent fasting are:

12 hours of fasting: This kind of fasting is the simplest one, where a person needs to adhere to 12 hours fasting window every day. The easiest way to follow this fast is to include the period of sleep in the fasting window. You can choose to fast between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The 16/8 method: This is also referred to as the Leangains protocol. The 16/8 methods involve skipping breakfast and restricting the eating period to 8 hours. In this eating window, one can fit in two, three, or more meals. You just need to be careful about your calorie intake.

Eat-Stop-Eat: This type of fasting involves shunning calorie intake for 24 hours, once or twice a week. Only water, coffee, and other zero-calorie beverages are allowed during the fasting period.

The 5:2 diet: In this method of intermittent fasting, one has to consume only 500600 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week. In the remaining 5 days, they are allowed to eat normally.

Alternate day fasting: In alternate-day fasting, one has to fast every other day. This type of fasting is quite an extreme form of intermittent fasting and may not be suitable for beginners or for those suffering from chronic diseases.

Weight loss story: "I start my meal with a til ka laddu and try out different grains and millets in main course" | The Times of India -…

I follow intermittent fasting of at least 14:10 or 15:9 on a regular basis. I have my first meal around 10 am and my last meal around 7 am. I also make sure I have a lot of seasonal, regional and traditional recipes, eat a little less than I am hungry (80%). I also keep sipping on a lot of warm water throughout the day.

My breakfast: Stewed Apples (I have a glass of warm water soon after waking up)

My lunch: All my meals are traditionally prepared at home and adhere to the Ayurvedic principles of nutrition and weight loss. So, I would start my meals by having a til ka laddoo (sesame seeds laddoo) and then proceed to have a wholesome meal of dal, subzi and chapati. I always alternate between different seasonal grains, millets and vegetables. Pearl millet is my current favourite.

My dinner: Ragi dosa with chutney or mixed khichdi with a tablespoon of ghee.

Pre-workout meal: I prefer doing empty stomach workouts, usually early in the morning.

Post-workout meal: I break my fast around 10 am with 6 almonds and figs, followed my stewed apples

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days):

I don't usually experience the urge to indulge in any cheat days because I find my regular diet fulfilling enough. I have managed to create a mental block against all things like maida, cheese. So, now, I don't crave for items like pizza, pasta or burger. If I still feel like treating myself, I go ahead and have something like daal ka halwa or gobhi ka parantha.

Yes, eggs can help you lose weight here’s how to eat them as part of a healthy diet – Business Insider Australia

Though eggs have been somewhat demonized for their high cholesterol content, evidence shows that eggs can be part of a healthy diet. Research indicates that eggs can even help you lose weight, as they are a healthy, high-protein breakfast option that keeps you full.

Heres what you need to know about the nutritional benefits of eggs and how you can eat them as part of your goals for weight loss.

Eggs boast an impressive nutrition profile.

Eggs are high-quality protein and contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, vitamin D, B vitamins, and folate, says Natalie Rizzo, a registered dietitian in New York City. Eggs are also rich in choline, a micronutrient that is important for pregnant women and babies.

Both egg whites and yolks contain protein. The yolk has the highest concentration of most fats, vitamins, and minerals. Alarge egg has about:

As far as weight loss, the protein in eggs can help keep you full and may contribute to eating fewer calories later in the day, Rizzo says.

Part of the challenge when losing weight is satisfying your hunger while still being in a caloric deficit. One way to tackle this is by eating high-protein foods that keep us fuller for longer. Eggs are high in protein, with about 6 grams per large egg.

Important: A satiety index is a measure of how full and satisfied a person feels after eating. Eggs have a 50% higher satiety index than white bread or breakfast cereal.

Protein is better at satiating our hunger than carbohydrates or fats because it takes longer to digest. The process of eating, digesting, and storing food is called the thermic effect. The thermic effect of food is the slight increase in metabolism you experience after eating it. A variety of factors can increase the thermic effect, one of which is the amount of protein.

Boosting your metabolism is one way to help you lose weight. Metabolism is your bodys ability to burn calories for energy. While having a fast or slow metabolism is really subject to your genes, eating a high-protein food, such as eggs, slightly speeds up your metabolism and burns more calories.

Protein also benefits muscle health, helping you to preserve and even build bigger muscles. Increasing your muscle mass has a direct effect on raising metabolism. Muscles use more energy and burn more calories at rest, so the more muscle you have, the more efficiently your body is burning the food you eat.

Americans tend to start the day with refined carbohydrates like cereal, pancakes, or doughnuts, which can increase your risk of obesity and even type 2 diabetes. Swapping a carb-heavy breakfast for one with high-protein foods like eggs may help you lose weight.

A small 2008 study of overweight and obese people ages 25 to 60 found eggs for breakfast led to more weight loss than a bagel for breakfast. Participants on a low-fat, calorie-restricted diet were divided into two groups, one of which ate eggs for breakfast and the other a bagel. Both breakfasts contained the same number of calories. After eight weeks, the egg group had a 61% greater reduction in BMI, a 65% greater loss in weight, and a 34% greater reduction in weight loss than the bagel group.

I definitely recommend eggs as part of a healthy breakfast, Rizzo says. To balance the breakfast, also include some fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and dairy.

Additionally, eating a healthy breakfast can reduce overall caloric intake by preventing cravings later in the day, Rizzo says. A 2016 review found eating a high-protein breakfast might be linked to lower weight, body fat, and a lower BMI.

There isnt a hard-and-fast rule on how many eggs you should eat, but eating one every day is perfectly healthy.

Though nutrition experts once scrutinised eggs for their high cholesterol content, research indicates eating an egg a day will not raise cholesterol levels. Rather, saturated fat not dietary cholesterol like that found in egg yolks influences cholesterol levels.

Breakfast meats like bacon and sausage are high in saturated fat, so try to limit those with your eggs. Instead, healthier ways to eat eggs include a vegetable frittata or on top of a piece of avocado toast.

To kill harmful bacteria, its best to cook them until the eggs and yolk are firm. Its healthy to cook eggs in the following ways:

Overall, eggs are a healthy and delicious way to start the day. Their high protein content can help you lose weight by keeping you fuller for longer and slightly boosting your metabolism. If you are trying to lose weight, prepare your eggs with minimal oil and be sure to pair them with other nutrient-rich low-calorie foods like vegetables or fruits.

Ugly Side Effects of Eating Fast Food Every Day, According to Experts | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Every once in a while, when you're in a rush and have an intense craving, swinging by your favorite fast food restaurant is okay for your health. At most, celebrity chef and certified nutritionist Serena Poon suggests dining at one of these places once a month, and if you do, choose smartly. This means having a salad or fruit as a side, rather than friesor choosing one of these 20 Surprisingly Healthy Fast Food Orders. And saying 'no' to soda and selecting a bottle of water instead. You can also pass on condiments, which are packed with sugar and preservatives. But what if you're eating fast food every day, or on a more regular basis?

"Make one adjustment to your regular fast food meal at a time to avoid feeling deprived," Poon says. "Remember, foods that are fresh and as close to their natural state as possible will nourish and energize your body."

But, if you are chowing down at McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, and other popular chains daily, your body will take a significant hit, and you may experience some ugly side effects of eating fast food every day. Here's how, and for even more healthy tips, be sure to check out our list of 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work.

More often than not, most people order burgers, fries, and sugar-filled drinks when they go through a fast-food drive-thru. While it might taste great at the moment, this type of meal lacks the essential nutrients we need including fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that a balanced diet would deliver.

"These nutrients are essential for both optimum health and protecting your body from inflammation and oxidation," Poon says.

In fact, according to The Cleveland Clinic, the five most inflammatory foods are added sugars, trans fat, red and processed meats, too many omega-6 fatty acids (found in oils), and refined carbsall elements of the meals you consume if you're eating fast food every day.

"This list of inflammatory foods is almost synonymous with what you'll find in one fast food meal," Poon adds.

In the short-term, Poon says chronic inflammation may cause discomforts such as pain, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and digestive problems.

"And, inflammation is also a known precursor to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases," she says.

Here are 14 Tips to Reduce Inflammation to Lose Weight Faster, According to RDs.

Because they are laden with unhealthy fats, sugar, salt, and processed carbs, most fast food options are extremely high in calories based on volume, explains nutrition expert and author Dr. Josh Axe, D.N.M., C.N.S.

"This combination of ingredients and flavors really appeals to our taste buds and makes it easy to overeat, and we can wind up consuming upwards of 1,000 calories or more in one fast food meal," he says.

And worst of all, because the food didn't offer any nutritional value, you'll be hungrier faster, and you'll always want more. As Dr. Axe explains, the more someone is accustomed to eating highly-palatable foods that are processed, the more someone craves them, creating a cycle of unhealthy habits.

Instead, treat yourself to some delicious meals at home with our list of 100 Easiest Recipes You Can Make.

Poon says researchers have found that diets that are high in processed foods, which are the same type of diets if you are eating fast food every day, negatively affect the gut microbiome. While many people believe the gut is only about how we digest food, this delicate environment rules our immune system and our bodies' primary function. When we have an imbalance in this area, it can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and obesity.

What's potentially even scarier, according to Poon, is research further shows that an imbalance in your gut microbiome caused by a diet that is high in sugar, fat and refined foods can become encoded in your DNA, passing on health risks to your children.

"Your gut microbiome thrives on foods that are rich in prebiotics, such as beans, bananas, Jerusalem artichokes, and oats and [probiotics] such as fermented foods as well as vegetables, fruit, fiber, and omega-3s," Poon recommends.

There's nothing worse when you can't seem to get comfortable, no matter what position you're in or what you're wearing. According to weight loss coach Stephanie Mansour, bloating is no fun for anyone, and fast food only makes this symptom exaggerated. Because these foods are incredibly high in sodium, which causes your body to retain water, you may feel swollen or bloated after eating a lot of fast food, especially after a few consecutive days of doing so.

"Some fast food meals contain half the amount of sodium you should have in one day, so you definitely should look out for this after eating fast food," she says.

In addition to pesky bloating, Poon says that regularly eating a high in sodium diet can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and cancer. "Combining the effects of sodium overconsumption with the other deleterious effects of a fast food meal makes it difficult to find an argument for eating fast food at all," she warns.

If you start to notice breakouts and rashes on your face or body after eating at a fast-food restaurant, you're not alone. Mansour explains that carbohydrates often cause acne due to the blood sugar spikes that occur after consumption.

"Because lots of fast foods are high in carbohydrates, it's important to understand the effects they can have not only on your internal body but on your skin as well," she continues. "If acne worsens, try cutting out some carbs."

But not all carbs are bad! It's just a matter of the types of carbs you consume. Incorporate these 9 Best Complex Carbs for Weight Loss regularly into your diet to feel full and satisfied.

Believe it or not, your one meal at a fast-food restaurant could send your macronutrients over the edge fast. As Poon estimates, one burger from a fast-food restaurant can contain about 30 grams of fat and 11 grams of saturated fat. A medium side of fries contains about 17 grams of fat and 3 grams of saturated fat. If you consume 2,000 calories per day, the daily recommended intake of fat is between 44 and 78 grams. The American Heart Association suggests that your daily limit for saturated fat at this average energy intake is 13 grams.

"By these calculations, one meal of burger and fries would easily set you over the recommended daily limit for saturated fat and well within your recommended daily fat intake," Poon continues. "Aside from contributing to overall weight gain, regularly eating a diet that is high in saturated fat can raise LDL cholesterol and increase your risk for heart disease and stroke."

This One Exercise Melts Fat Faster Than Any Other, Says Science – Eat This, Not That

The workout that melts fat fastest is also one of the quickest, typically taking less than 20 minutes from start to finish. Known as high-intensity interval training or HIIT, it requires you to move fast, very fast for a very short period of time. One researcher goes as far as calling it the "one-minute workout," because one version of this training method amounts to just 60 seconds of intensely strenuous exertion, 20-second bouts broken up by periods of rest, a sequence that's repeated multiple times.

You probably recognize this exercise techniqueas it has been written about here and elsewhere many times. But have you tried it? And, if so, have you done it correctly and endured this rigorous style of exercising long enough to notice results?

HIIT works. A number of studies have shown that short, vigorous workouts improve markers of good health like aerobic fitness, lower blood pressure, and more stable blood sugar. Workouts like HIIT can also burn more calories and reduce more visceral fat than typical endurance exercises like walking, running, and cycling at a moderate pace will when done for an hour or more.

How so? The science is complicated; strenuous exercise triggers certain changes on the molecular level that result in what's known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or EPOC. In other words, after exercise, you get a metabolic after-burn for about 24 hours where you burn more calories than normal.

More important than weight loss are the aerobic fitness benefits derived from quickie exercise sessions, say researchers. In a groundbreaking study from McMaster University in Canada published in PLOS One, researchers demonstrated that just one minute of intense effort in a 10-minute workout was enough to reap the rewards. In the study, 14 sedentary overweight men and women were asked to do a 10-minute workout on stationary bicycles, pedaling as hard and fast as they could for three 20-second intervals with 2-minute rest periods of slow pedaling in between. With a warmup and cool-down, the entire workout took just 10 minutes, 60 seconds of which was intense effort. After six weeks of these 10-minute workouts done three times a week, the cyclists significantly improved their aerobic capacity by 12% on average, lowered blood pressure numbers, and enhanced other markers of aerobic and muscular fitness. (Related: Simple Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy.)

That's good news for people who blow off exercising because they say they don't have time to fit it into their busy days. This study proves it takes just one minute of hard work in 10 minutes of your precious workout time.

And it doesn't have to be performed on a stationary bike. Martin Gibala, PhD, professor of kinesiology at McMaster, and one of the lead researchers of the study, says almost any type of exercise can be performed as sprint-style intervals. He wrote a book The One-Minute Workout: Science Shows a Way to Get Fit That's Smarter, Faster, Shorter detailing several ways to incorporate HIIT training into your busy life.

One caveat: Sprint intervals are super, super difficult. People who don't get results most often aren't pushing themselves hard enough, trainers say. It's physically and psychologically challenging. You have to be OK with feeling discomfort.

"I tell people to imagine a bloodthirsty Rottweiler is chasing them and trying to take a bite out of their hamstring run like your life depends on it," says Denver-based personal trainer and fitness writer Eric C. Stevens. He makes another critical point: "To stay motivated at that level of exertion choose an exercise that you love doing. For me that's boxing and martial arts because of the skill set required and the sense of community." (Related: 10 Easy Ways to Burn Fat in 30 Minutes)

But it can be any activityrowing classes, cycling, brisk walking, even resistance trainingany activity where you can push yourself to near exhaustion for short bouts.

Stevens suggests two basic types of sprint intervals to try if you want to sample this super-fast way to get fit. But first, a critical step to avoid injury: Begin each HIIT workout with a total-body dynamic warm-up for three to five minutes, he says. Do arm circles while marching in place, jumping jacks, jump rope, inchworms, anything that gets all your limbs involved and raises your heart rate.

Use a stopwatch or clock with a second hand to keep time. After your warm-up, begin running, cycling, or rowing for 30 seconds at a light intensity. Next, do 20 seconds at a high intensity where you find it difficult to talk in complete sentences. Without resting, go right into a 10-second segment of maximum "rottweiler-in-pursuit" effort. You'll know you're pushing hard enough if you're too winded to speak. Repeat the 30-20-10 sequence four more times, followed by a three-minute cooldown of walking and stretching.

Always begin with a dynamic warmup for three to five minutes. Tabata training follows a 20-10 sequence. You begin with 20-seconds of high-intensity, all-out effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest (very slow pedaling or walking). Repeat the pattern seven more times for a total of four minutes. End with a cooldown.

"You can play with those interval times as long as you are getting the intensity," says Stevens. "Anerobic training takes a monstrous effort. It also feels terrible at times. But if you want the body of a dancer, a gymnast or sprinter, you have to train like one."

Since HIIT is so physically taxing, be sure that you are healthy enough before trying this exercise strategy. Visit your physician for a full physical exam.

Also, note that trainers like Stevens and researchers like Gibala stress that the most effective and efficient way to lose weight and maintain the weight loss is not through exercise but by reducing calories through a healthy diet. How Walking Every Day Helped This Guy Lose 300 Pounds – menshealth.com

In a new episode of the body transformation webseries Brand New Me, Frank Markosek from Illinois shares how he struggled with his weight and with over-eating for years. "If it had a dollar menu, I was there," he says, describing how he would eat fast food almost every day, and would frequently eat before bed.

At his heaviest, Frank weighed 557 pounds, and says that he would often put on a brave face for the sake of others, but was continually dealing with feelings of unhappiness. A turning point came during a friend's bachelor weekend in 2019, when Frank and his friends went to a hockey game, and he found that he couldn't sit comfortably in the stadium seat for longer than a minute because it was so tight.

"I remember getting up and crying my eyes out," he says. "I looked in the mirror and I said, do you want to live, or do you want to die?"

He knew it was time to finally make a change, and so he made a commitment to eating healthier, and started exercising. He originally set himself the goal of walking 10,000 steps each day, but soon found that walking was as good for his mental health as it was for his physical health, and he began to do it more and more.

"I love walking, I love the air, I love being outside, I love feeling free," he says. "I walk around a half-marathon total every day."

During the filming of the episode, Frank reveals that he is now weighing in at 256 poundsa total weight loss of 301 pounds in under two years.

"I think I had to go through these struggles to finally figure everything out today," he says. "I feel like I have more control than I ever did before. You can fix your body all you want, but until you fix your head, you cannot maintain sustainability with weight loss. A lot of the mental aspect of it was me talking out loud about my past experiences; it helped me release all those feelings I had, but in a positive way."

Want to Lose Weight by Running? Here Are 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid – Yahoo Lifestyle UK

Refinery 29 UK

Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Hannah van der Westhuysen as Stella, Eliot Salt as Terra, Abigail Cowen as Bloom, Elisha Applebaum as Musa, Precious Mustapha as Aisha in Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Cr. Jonathan Hession/NETFLIX 2020 Warning: Spoilers ahead for Fate: The Winx Saga finale A Fanatic Heart. Netflixs Fate: The Winx Saga series premiere, To the Waters and the Wild, churns out a lot of plot. There are the Burned Ones, the terrifying creatures living in the forest of Winxs principle dimension, Otherworld. There is the magical boarding school Alfea, which seems to be tied to a forgotten history of violent horrors. Since this is a Netflix teen show created by ex-Vampire Diaries writer Brian Young, there are also the friendships and crushes of Winxs core cast brewing on the horizon. But, at the centre of all these flights of fancy is the mysterious origin of Winx heroine Bloom (Chilling Adventures of Sabrinas Abigail Cowen), a teen girl who believed she was a normal human up until three weeks prior to the events of the show. Bloom isnt a regular girl shes an excessively powerful fairy and a changeling, as roommate Aisha (Precious Mustapha) informs her in Waters and the Wind. A changeling, as Aisha says, is a fairy baby that is taken to the human realm and swapped with a human baby. From the moment Aisha tells Bloom the reality of her situation, fans likely believe theyre in for a season of reveals about Blooms true lineage and the identity of her parents. This is not what happens. Instead, we watch Bloom grow into the kind of fairy who can wield ancient magic by sprouting actual fairy wings and killing Burned Ones through the sheer power of her fire without any serious explanation. For a moment, it seems possible Bloom is a descendant of the Aster Dell village, which was destroyed years earlier in the war against the Burned Ones. But the residents of Aster Dell were humans who practiced blood magic; Bloom is fairy through and through. As Winx villain Rosalind (Lesley Sharp) explains to Bloom, this means she was stolen as a baby by the blood witches. Blooms parentage remains wholly unexplored. Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Hannah van der Westhuysen as Stella, Abigail Cowen as Bloom, Precious Mustapha as Aisha in Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Cr. Jonathan Hession/NETFLIX 2020 This final, thudding twist creates a host of Winx questions that the series purposefully ignores in the final minutes of season finale A Fanatic Heart. Why did the Aster Dell witches steal Bloom in the first place? Is there any way to figure out Blooms ancestry now that she is an orphan? If Blooms parents are as powerful as has been suggested, shouldnt they have been able to find her in the human realm? What created Blooms connection to the Burned Ones in the first place? Throughout Winx season 1, I suspected we would learn Blooms pregnant mother was infected by a Burned One before giving birth (thereby passing some Burned One magic onto her child), but no such reveal ever came. When you zoom out on Winx season 1 which has a short six-episode season, in comparison to the usual eight to twelve episode order for most Netflix series you realise the fantasy adventure has many similarly unanswered questions. These are the ones keeping me up at night. What in the (Other)world is a specialist? Alfea is home to fairies and the very ripped warriors who help them in battle. Those warriors, like romantic lead Sky (Danny Griffin), are specialists. We are told specialists are not fairies. But Winx never explains what category specialists actually fall into in that case. Are they humans? Are specialists their own species? Are they half-fairy, half-human hybrids with a knack for big swords? Well never know. What are the Burned Ones? When Winx begins, viewers are told that the Burned Ones are the most dangerous threat in Otherworld. Unlike Game of Thrones, which extravagantly expounds on the mythology of White Walkers, Winx refuses to explain Burned Ones lore beyond mention of their cinder core or why the battle against them ramped up so intensely 16 years earlier. Its also unclear why Alphea, seemingly the premier fairy school in Otherworld, is smack in the middle of the Burned Ones hunting ground, barrier or no barrier. To make matters worse, Winx completely avoids considering the finale reveal that Burned Ones revert to human form once they are vanquished by Bloom. That means all the Burned Ones are normal people who have transformed into the creatures (likely against their will). Does Alfea only have three teachers? Alfea is posed as a leading supernatural educational facility, akin to Harry Potters Hogwarts. Yet even in times of crisis we only see three adults in the school: headmistress Farah Dowling (Eve Best), plant-based teacher/gardener Professor Harvey (Alex Macqueen), and specialist commander Saul Silva (Robert James-Collier). Is this trio teaching the hundreds of students at Alfea solo? If so, no wonder the school is falling apart. Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Eliot Salt as Terra in Fate: The Winx Club Saga Season 1. Cr. Jonathan Hession/NETFLIX 2020 Does Alfea have a single rule on the books? Throughout Winx season 1, Terra (Eliot Salt) repeatedly uses her earth fairy powers against her most irritating classmates. Are there no Alfea regulations that prohibit weaponising ones abilities to harm fellow students? Also, Bloom is allowed to tell her parents about her fairy powers and bring her friends to the truth-telling First World party. Does Otherworld really not have any laws about revealing its existence to pesky humans? On a related note: Are Blooms parents legitimately not upset to learn their daughter accidentally caused a near-fatal house fire with her surprise powers? Blooms mother (Eva Birthistle) is still covered in burns in the finale. What about Ricki! When we first meet Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen), Blooms roommate/romantic rival and a literal princess, were led to believe she blinded her best friend Ricki for flirting with Sky. It is eventually revealed that Stella never intended to hurt Ricki the incident occured due to Stellas unstable magic. It was an accident. Stellas mother, the queen (Kate Fleetwood), created the blinding story as a show of force to cover up Stellas so-called magical weakness. We never see Ricki or find out how she is doing. Justice for Ricki! What does Aisha do all day when shes not trying to save Bloom? Because Winx season 1 really doesnt want to tell us. Like what you see?
