Laugh, and the world laughs with you | Local Business – Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
Turn on the TV too much and we will cease laughing, and laughing is critical for our physical and mental health especially now.
LAUGH, AND THE WORLD LAUGHS WITH YOU
By Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Laugh, and the world laughs with you,
Weep, and you weep alone,
For the brave old earth must borrow its mirth ;
It has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer,
Sigh, it is lost on the air ;
The echoes redound to a joyful sound
And shrink from voicing care.
Rejoice, and men will seek you,
Grieve, and they turn and go ;
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not want your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many,
Be sad, and you lose them all ;
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life's gall.
Feast, and your halls are crowded,
Fast, and the world goes by,
Forget and forgiveit helps you live,
But no man can help you die !
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But, one by one, we must all march on,
Through the narrow aisle of pain.
The Cleveland Citizen, Oct. 31, 1891
Can laughing help you lose weight?
I am sure you heard before of how much laughing is beneficial for you. It relives stress, lifts your mood and it even reduces chances of heart diseases. But did you know that laughing can also help you lose weight? It is true, laughing can actually help you lose a few kilos. Do you think you will ever diet again?
1. Laughing boosts metabolism.
Laughing allows the brain to release the beneficial chemicals into your body regularly. This will boost your metabolism, which in turn will burn calories, proving that laughing can help you lose weight.
2. It also tones your stomach.
Laughing is also a great way to strengthen the muscles of your stomach. As you laugh, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract fully, which is exactly what happens when you exercise your abs. So laughing can help you get a toned tummy.
3. Laughing is a great cardio workout.
Too lazy do some cardio? Just turn on a comedy show! Laughing will increase your heart rate and burn your fats in a way that is equivalent to an hour of walking.
4. It burns up to 40 calories.
According to studies, laughing for about 10-15 minutes can burn between 10-40 calories.
5. Laughing gives a chance for your face to workout.
When you laugh, your 15 facial muscles move, which means that laughing can even give your face a quick workout. This tones your face muscles, making them firm.
If you have been following a strict diet to try and lose weight, then try and add a daily dose of laughing to it. Watch a funny movie, or have some fun with your friends, because laughing is truly one of the most fun and easy ways that can help you lose weight.

Sirtfood diet: What you can eat on the diet behind Adeles weight loss – food list – Express
How to do the sirtfood diet
Though the diet is often hailed as easy to follow thanks to the fact it includes red wine and dark chocolate, its fairly strict in its guidelines.
The sirtfood plan relies on dieters restricting their calorie intake as well as eating a specific list of foods that are said to boost the metabolism.
The three-week plan involves an initial seven-day phase, followed by two weeks on phase two, AKA the maintenance phase.
One of the key components is a green juice which the founders call rocket fuel, which followers of the diet have to make up to three times a day.
Sirtfood green juice recipe
75 grams (2.5 oz) kale
30 grams (1 oz) arugula (rocket)
5 grams parsley
2 celery sticks
1 cm (0.5 in) ginger
half a green apple
half a lemon
half a teaspoon matcha green tea
Using a blender, juice all of the ingredients except for the green tea powder and lemon together, and pour them into a glass. Juice the lemon by hand, then stir both the lemon juice and green tea powder in.
This juice is important for phase one, which is designed to jump-start the weight loss. It involves restricting calories to just 1,000 a day (which is below the recommended daily intake).
Anyone following the plan would have three green juices per day plus one meal.
In the last three days of that initial week, the calorie intake increases to 1,500 a day, so you can add two more meals and have just two juices.
The recipes are all laid out in the official book, and include meals such as omelettes, salads and stir fries.
In phase two, dieters can then enjoy three sirtfood-rich meals and one sirtfood green juice a day, rather than watching the calorie count.
According to the founders, you should lose weight steadily throughout the plan.

The glycemic index A conceptual breakthrough in combating obesity – The Jerusalem Post
COVID-19 is taking its toll in many ways. Aside from the serious tragedy of the loss of life, reports of uncontrolled hunger and eating are leading to predictions of the danger of increased obesity.
The following is intended to clarify how weight can be controlled when hunger is kept at bay using a reliable, informative tool called the glycemic index.
THE GLYCEMIC index (G.l.) began as a curious observation.
Edocrinologists treating diabetic patients would tell them to eat no sweets. This obviously meant no sugar in their coffee/tea, no cake, no chocolate and no soft drinks. When patients returned for their regular visits, the doctor routinely tested their blood for glucose. The discussion that followed naturally always entailed an inquiry about the food they had eaten since their last visit.
Doctors were puzzled to find that patients who followed their instructions and avoided sweets didn't test much better than those who said they tried to follow their orders but found it too difficult to stay away from sweet desserts and candy. This was confusing, frustrating, and seemed to be counterintuitive until 1981 when Dr David Jenkins, an Oxford University graduate doing research at the University of Toronto studied the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels and the effect on weight.
He discovered that different carbs led to different increases of sugar, which cause the pancreas to release very different amounts of insulin, and we now know that insulin is the fat-storing hormone. This became a critical issue for people who want to lose weight; for diabetics who must keep their glucose under control; for prediabetics eager to avoid a diagnosis of diabetes; and for people suffering from disorders that are triggered by too much sugar in their system such as joint inflammation, kidney malfunction, cardiac disease, and mood disorders. You may have paid attention to the sugar high thats then followed by a sugar low after eating meals loaded with sugar, such as Chinese food, pizza and others that are seemingly sugarless.
SO, WHAT is the G.I. exactly, and how does it work?
We know that all carbs increase our blood sugar, and we now know that sugar causes a rise in insulin, which feeds our cells with the energy we need to move, breathe, talk, etc. However, eating lots of sugar for a long period of time will cause the insulin to store the extra sugar as fat, which is how we gain weight. The solution to this chain of events is found in the G.I., which is simply a very long list of foods that are listed according to how much sugar we receive when eating an item.
The foods on the list range from 0 to 100; the lower the number, the less sugar we get. No need to add or manage the number in any way. The name of the game is to eat the foods that are lowest on the list. So, to lose weight fast, eat items that range from 0 to 15 on the list; to lose weight, but slower, eat any of the foods that are from 15 to 35. If you don't need to gain or lose, eat the items that are from 35 to 55. Never eat things that are beyond 55.
Many studies have been done to establish the credibility of the G.I. One such study done at Florida Atlantic University is simple and instructive. A group of lab rats who shared the same weight, age, etc were divided into two groups and put in separate cages that had the same gym equipment that they all had to manoeuvre in order to reach the food at the opposite end of the cage. Those in Cage A were fed the typical (low G.I.) food that healthy lab rats are fed. In Cage B, the rats were fed only processed foods that contained high amounts of sugar (which is characteristic of the processed food marketed to us). Each group of rats was observed daily, watching for their level of activity, social behaviours and weight.
Within a short while, marked differences began to appear between the two groups. The rats fed their normal diet continued to behave as they had previously done. The experimental rats became heavy, sluggish, and showed a marked struggle to manoeuvre the gym equipment. To prove that sugar was addictive, increasing electric shocks were administered to the rats in both cages when they went for their food. When the shock became painful, the healthy rats preferred to forgo the food to avoid being shocked. The fat sluggish rats would suffer the pain of the shocks to get to the food.
And so we learned that sugar is not only fattening, its also addictive!
The writer is the author of three how to science-backed books on health and weight. She has an M.Phil degree from Cambridge University, and a social work degree from Hebrew University.

5 healthy ways to break your fast – Arab News
JEDDAH: Around the world, Muslims eating habits and sleeping patterns change during Ramadan with the obligation to abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. However, this sudden shift in routine needs to be handled carefully since our bodies are not used to this lifestyle.Apart from spiritual advantages, fasting offers several health benefits. However, depending on ones health, every individual should adapt to this routine in their own way.Several weeks before the holy month, people began circulating health tips on social media, including hints on weight loss, detoxification, ways to fight fatigue and dealing with bad breath.Experts frequently warn people against blindly following online tips because of the health risks. In many cases, these suggestions lack scientific proof, and are accompanied by exaggerated claims and testimonials.Arab News caught up with some health experts to discuss common misconceptions during Ramadan and asked them to provide helpful tips for healthy fasting.
Chance to lose weightPeople often view Ramadan as a chance to lose weight because their food intake is lower than usual.Dr. Mohannad Badghaish, a senior registrar in internal medicine, agrees that fasting can help shed extra weight and offers several guidelines.Eat three balanced meals a day, including breakfast, dinner and sahoor. Each meal should consist of 30 percent protein, 15-20 percent fat and 50 percent carbohydrates, while also maintaining daily workout, he said.Clinical and sports dietician Sundos Malaikah advises against aiming for rapid weight loss, suggesting a gradual behavioral change that can be maintained during and after Ramadan.Weight that is quickly lost will most probably be quickly regained. It is scientifically proven that such diets often fail. I always try to promote improving your relationship with food first, learning about hunger and satiety cues, while gradually changing eating behavior, she told Arab News.People often adopt an all-or-nothing approach to changing habits, while taking things step by step is more sustainable and healthier, Malaikah said. She suggests people avoid eating processed foods and rely on natural sources.According to Malaikah, weight loss is simple if a person eats natural food and makes sure their food intake matches their energy needs.Associating weight loss with less food is inaccurate, she said.
If our body had toxins in it, we would be lying in a hospital. Our body is equipped with strong mechanisms that detoxify and remove any harmful substances. No green juice will do that for you.

In a time where many people are worried about their health due to the coronavirus threat, fasting can help improve health when done properly.OvereatingHowever, an abundance of food and sweets not only prevents people from gaining the health benefits but also goes against the spiritual value of Ramadan. Our immune system is quite complex and very powerful. There are no individual foods that will make it stronger. Unfortunately, that is a misconception. We can boost its fighting abilities by providing the right environment, which is staying physically active, getting enough high-quality sleep, managing stress and eating well, she said.Badghaish also warned that excessive consumption of food has a negative impact on health and goes against Islamic teaching. The Prophet Muhammad said: A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one-third of food, one-third for drink and one-third for air, he said.
Physical activitiesExercise is another important factor in weight loss, but there are conflicting opinions on the best time to work out during Ramadan and if it is wise to exercise while fasting.Badghaish said that there is no harm in exercising while fasting, but for non-diabetics the best time to exercise is 60 to 90 minutes before breakfast/iftar.Malaikah said that the benefits of exercising on an empty stomach are often exaggerated. The claim we often hear is that our body is using our fat store for fuel. While that may be true, it doesnt mean fat loss. My body is using my fat stores for energy all the time simply because thats how it works. Using fat doesnt equate with losing fat, she said. Therefore, the best time for a workout is whenever you can, and to lose weight you should watch your food intake.
DetoxMalaikah also offered a warning on detoxification diets or meals. If our body had toxins in it, we would be lying in a hospital. Our body is equipped with strong mechanisms that detoxify and remove any harmful substances. No green juice will do that for you. Unfortunately, a lot of marketing tries to sell ideas that dont have much scientific evidence, she said.If you want to make your body work at its best, do at least 150 minutes of cardio exercise during a week along with resistance exercises twice a week, and eat well and mindfully. Our bodies usually tell us when to stop eating and when to start. If we listened instead of continuing to eat while ignoring all these cues, our health would be better.
Common complaintsMany people usually experience headaches, fatigue, difficulties concentrating or doing our daily work while fasting, especially during the first days of Ramadan. Badghaish said that the main reason for these symptoms is insufficient compensation for the lost water and fluids from the body. A man should drink about3 liters of water per day, while a woman should drink 2.5 liters, he said. Liquids that contain sugar are not recommended. Caffeine also speeds up water loss, so its consumption should be reduced or avoided during Ramadan.
HIGHLIGHTS
People should avoid eating processed foods and rely on natural sources.
The best time for a workout is whenever you can.
A man should drink about 3 liters of water per day, while a woman should drink 2.5 liters.
Bad breath may result from fasting due to lack of water and food for long hours, making one feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. However, it is possible to control the problem.Malaikah said that certain types of food, such as spices, garlic and onions, can affect breath.Maintaining proper oral hygiene helps brushing our teeth at least twice per day, using a mouthwash and flossing on a daily basis. Additionally, eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day often helps as well, she said.Breath odor can be a sign of dental or gastrointestinal problems that might need expert help. Among the causes of bad breath with the digestive tract areesophageal reflux, high blood sugar and liver failure, Badghaish said. While fasting is obligatory for all healthy adult Muslims, there are exemptions for those who are ill or whose health could be affected by fasting, for example, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with certain health conditions.

Where is Zsalynn From My 600-lb Life Now? – The Cinemaholic
My 600-lb Life is a reality docu-series that features the dramatic transformations of morbidly obese individuals. Each episode follows a different individual weighing nearly 600 lbs and documents their year-long struggle as they try to improve their quality of life before it gets too late. They do this with the help and guidance of Dr. Younan Nowzaradan (Dr. Now) and his weight loss program, which he operates in Houston, Texas. Dr. Now helps thee individuals lose their weight by giving them a strict diet to follow, after which he offers them a gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to assist the weight loss process further.
Zsalynn Whitworth from San Antonio, Texas, was first introduced to us on season 2, episode 1 of My 600-lb Life. The then 42-year-old at one point had reached a peak weight of 694 lbs. Zsalynn could barely stand up and walk and confessed that she knew that she could die very soon if she continued with the path that she was on.
The mother of one wanted to be in her daughters life for as long as possible, but her manipulative and un-supportive husband was proving to be a significant problem. He prioritized his fantasy and fetish over his wifes literal life. Zsalynn was able to explain the whole situation in one simple, straightforward sentence, stating: He has a physical preference for his sexual needsthat requires me to be bigger than just fat.
Her husbands true nature was proven when at one point, Zsalynn ordered a salad in a restaurant, and he said: Im not buying you a salad. If you want to eat grass, you can go in the garden and graze.
Wanting to have a future and live life in the best possible way, Zsalynn decided that she would shed her weight and, in 2014, despite her husbands wishes, moved to Houston and started her year-long weight-loss journey.
When she first came to Dr. Now, Zsalynn weighed almost 600 lbs, but with her new diet plan and her gastric bypass surgery, she was able to cut that weight down by half. Her husband had even tried to sabotage her progress after her surgery by immediately taking her to a fast food a drive-thru joint, where he ordered a burger.
In her, Where Are They Now? follow up episodes, she revealed that she divorced her husband. She also admitted to the fact that continuing the weight loss journey all alone has been quite hard to do. Being alone a lot has been a bit of an adjustment for me, so Ive struggled with being depressed when I dont see (my daughter) Hannah for a while, Zsalynn said. And being alone has made it even harder for me to deal with my cravings.
Fortunately, based on her social media posts, it looks like everything has worked out really well for her. Not only has she lost a majority of her weight and is currently living a happy and healthy life, but she has also found a man who actually appreciates her for who she is. It also seems like she got excess skin removal surgery.
