Khichdi defies the notion that all healthy things need to be bland and boring, which is one of the 10,000 reasons why we love it so much. Kaz is literally half the woman she used to be after impressive 12-stone weight loss – Swindon Advertiser

KAZ Rose was so shocked by a photograph showing her huge bulk that she went on to lose half her 24st weight.

Now she wants to help others follow in her footsteps.

She joined a slimming group in Gorse Hill back in 2005 after a photo of her sitting in front of four friends, in which she blocked out all of their legs, brought home how overweight she was.

It took a year and a half for the 36-year-old from Park South to lose 12st and she has managed to stay at 12st ever since by continuing the classes as well as raising 81,000 for different charities like CALM, cancer research and the British Heart Foundation through bike rides and half-marathons.

Kaz said: This is the better half of me. My weight loss journey has given me a different outlook on life and helped me become more confident - I feel like I can do more now.

Life is so busy and fast when youre young that you dont realise how big youve got until you get a sudden wake-up call like that photo.

I started the classes with friends because I wanted to get back to how I was when I was 16. My dad joined the classes too after being advised to lose weight by a doctor.

My biggest advice to people who were in my position would be to commit to it because losing weight is not easy but you will get the results that you want in the end.

After training to become a consultant herself, Kaz now leads the Slimming World group she joined 15 years ago.

Shes looking forward to starting her first session as group leader tonight at the first weekly sessions of the year in Gorse Hill Baptist Church at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Her top tips for losing weight and keeping it off included setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success.

Kaz added: When I first joined as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just cant wait to get started.

Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that youre not alone. I couldnt have lost 12 stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group.

It isnt just about changing what you eat - becoming more active is important too. I want to help others to achieve their dreams and gain the confidence I have gained.

Now my role is to create that warm, supportive atmosphere which helps get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - its going to be fun.

How to lose weight according to this guy who lost 38 kgs by customising his diet instead of starving or fasting – GQ India

The key to weight loss is not starvation or even fasting for unrealistically long stretches. These two actions will only lead to a temporary drop in your weight and with this temporary drop, a number of health issues will start popping. And, both your physical and mental health will get affected. Now that weve established that starving or fasting is not going to help you, well let Bharat Sahu expedite on his weight loss journey that nudged him to create a customised diet as a part of his weight loss plan to lose 38 kgs trim from 122 kgs to 84 kgs.

At my heaviest, I weighed 122 kgs and looked way older than my actual age, which was 30 at the time I commenced my weight loss journey; a lot of people even started addressing me as 'uncle'. However, the moment thats really worth deeming as the turning point of my life was during a holiday in Thailand. I was not allowed to go paragliding due to my weight. Out of 50 people in our group, I was the only one who didnt get to paraglide. It was a very embarrassing moment but it showed me the reality of my body and health. So, after I returned from Thailand, I decided to enrol myself in a gym and also start eating right to lose weight.

With this decision also came a lot of obstacles. The first being, there was no gym near my house. So Id travel around 35 kms daily to go to work (I am a teacher), and then travel close to 30 kms more to go to the gym. But it was worth it! Here, take a look at the gym routine that helped me tone my body:

I started with cardio - mostly running and cycling. I could not skip due to my heavy weight in the beginning, but eventually things got better. My clothes started loosening and I lost 3 kgs in the first month itself."

"For the first four months, my routine focused on cardio more, and less on weight training. I also did some functional exercises daily. But after losing around 10 kgs, I started weight training more intensely (by increasing the weights) but never skipped cardio still. This routine was followed dedicatedly 6 days/week. Simultaneously, Bharat also worked on creating a diet plan perfect for his body type. He breaks it down for us below.

I am a pure vegetarian I dont even eat eggs. So to los weight, I made a proper diet chart by shuffling through various articles online and offline. I did not fast or follow any salad-based starving diets. The main highlights of my diet were (and still are):

1. Proper home-cooked food

2. Little or no sweets at all

3. No junk or fried food

4. And no online food delivery as well!

If I wanted to eat something that I was craving, Id eat it in a very moderate amount and even compensate for it by working out extra in the gym. This is what my daily meals comprised:

Breakfast: Tea without sugar or very little sugar with two suji rusks or biscuits + poha/idli/upma

Lunch: Three chapatis with dal, veggies, curd and salad

Evening snacks: A cucumber/curd with a fruit and 5-6 almonds + a cup of black coffee before going to the gym

Dinner: Two chapatis with dal, veggies OR khichdi

Post-dinner: One glass of warm milk without sugar

This diet plan was and is actually very easy to follow. Everything is homemade. I ate roti with ghee but didnt add any extra ghee in dal nothing is harmful when eaten in moderate quantities. I ate cucumber or roasted chana whenever I felt hungry; drank lots of water as well as green tea.

QUICK READ: Here's how drinking water at regular intervals can help you lose weight and increase your metabolism

Everybody is different and everyones bodies take a different amount of time to lose weight. I never took fat burners or any powder. My transformation took close to two years. It was slow as compared to others because it was totally natural. So, start working out, make the mirror your best friend, get a friend to accompany you, dont lose hope if u dont see any results in the beginning, it is a slow process.

Here’s Your 7-Step Plan to Lose Weight Fast in 2020 – Prevention.com

If your New Year's resolution is to lose 10 pounds in a week, adjust that goal now. Theres virtually no healthy way to drop that much weight that fast, but there are steps you can take to slim down quickly. Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D., C.D.N, head of nutrition at WW and author of Dressing on the Side (and Other Diet Myths Debunked), is here to tell you how, step-by-step. If you follow her guidance, you should be able to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week in a way that helps you keep it off.

Chances are you like to eat, and lucky for you, losing weight requires you to do just that! Dont skip meals," says London. "We all do it sometimes, and women especially have a tendency to cut back, limit, or restrict their intake, which backfires every time! Instead, she says the key is to eat every 3 or 4 hours (whether thats a full meal or a small snack at 200 calories or less), which will fuel you all day long, keep you satiated, and lower your chances of overeating or succumbing to late-night bingeing. And each meal should be a combo of lean protein, fiber, and fat, London says. Following the Mediterranean diet is your best bet because its got all the types of foods that will help you lose weight. And whenever you can, opt for a whole foodso vegetables instead of veggie chips, whole grain bread instead of white, a baked sweet potato instead of sweet potato fries, fruit instead of fruit juiceyou get the idea!

When it comes to fruit and vegetables, more is better, London says. Consuming fiber- and nutrient-rich foods in bulk means youre more likely to consistently lose weightand keep it off. At least half of your plate should be filled with veggies, no matter the meal, London says. Sandwich for lunch? Stuff that baby with all the veggies available to you. Sushi for dinner? Start with a salad and a veggie-based appetizer, then choose rolls with extra vegetables built in. Try adding a piece of fruit or an extra serving of veggies to your snacks, too. London loves swapping crispy radishes, carrots, or jicama for chips and dip, and using apple slices instead of crackers as a base for peanut butter.

One of the easiest tricks to quickly whittle away weight is to cut back on sugary drinks and foods. Make sure all your beveragescoffee, tea, sparkling waterare unsweetened, and when ordering alcohol, go with spirits on the rocks, says London. Also be mindful of sneaky sources of added sugar (coconut sugar and cane sugar are still sugars!), such as fruit purees, sauces, condiments, and other packaged goods, including savory ones like chips or bread.

Exercise and weight loss can be trickybuilding lean muscle is key, but overdoing the activity can lead to burnout and make you feel hungrier later on, says London. Thats why I like to recommend you make it your personal goal to simply move more. Walking whenever and wherever you can is an easy way to boost your activity levels without logging more hours at the gym. Other good tips: Take the long way to your favorite coffee shop, walk up and down the stairs during commercial breaks, or do a lower ab workout while you wait for the pasta water to boil.

Next time you feel peckish, ask yourself a few questions to determine what you needa drink, a snack, or a full meal.

Your sleep habits can affect your appetite," says London. "If youre coming up short in the sleep department, you may feel hungrier during the day or end up eating more simply because youre spending more hours awake." Aim to get the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night, but if you do find yourself having a sleepy day, giving yourself a caffeine jolt can help curb your need to munch.

Find a likeminded friend or online group to help keep you accountable, or seek out apps or programs that can help you keep track of your eating habits. myWW provides a framework in which you apply all of these concepts in ways that work best for you, says London. The new program has a personal assessment you take at the outset, so snack hacks, recipe suggestions, and dining out strategies are customized to meet your food preferences and lifestylesresulting in a plan thats designed just for your life.

How to lose weight fast with the best diets of 2020 including keto, vegan and Mediterranean – The Sun

FROM mince pies and mulled wine to chocolates and roast potatoes - it's easy to overindulge over the festive season.

But for most of us it gets to a point where you go from eating pigs in blankets to feeling like one.

1

So, with the festivities behind us, you might be thinking about starting a fresh diet as a New Year's resolution.

But the medical director of the NHS, warned earlier this week that Brits should avoid quick-fix remedies that are too good to be true.

Prof Stephen Powis says that many dieting fads being sold on High Streets or plugged online are at best ineffective and can often be harmful.

He said: "New years resolutions are a great time to make a change, but the reality is theres a slim chance of success withdiet pills and detox teas."

So we've rounded up some of the top diets recommended by experts to help you pick the best weight loss plan for you as we kick start 2020.

This olive oil-rich diet promotes the consumption of vegetables and fruits in addition to oily fish, red wine, lean meats, nuts and low-fat dairy products.

It's low in refined sugar, red meat and processed foods which is why it's been linked to lowering risks of cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure.

The diet also may improve kidney function and gut health.

According to the NHS, the Mediterranean diet varies by country and region, so it has a range of definitions, but in general, it's high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil.

It usually includes a low intake of meat and dairy foods andtends to replace butter with oil, while flavouring comes from herbs and spices rather than salt.

Experts at Sheffield Hallam Uni also recommended it as the best diet to follow for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Not an eating plan designed for those of us in a hurry, DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

It's a plan specifically designed to help lower blood pressure.

It involves reducing yoursalt intake and loading up on foods that are chock-full of heart-friendly minerals like calcium, potassium andmagnesium.

Again, it involves you limiting how much red meat and sugar you consume, as well as fats.

MIND is short for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, and it's a plan which combines the Med and DASH diets in the hope of improving brain health.

While the jury is still out as to whether you can seriously eat your way out of mental decline, experts have praised the MIND diet for encouraging such healthy attitudes towards food and nutrition.

Those on the plan are told that they must eat at least three servings of whole grains, a salad, another vegetable and a glass of wine a day.

Okay, so this one isn't a specific diet but more of a lifestyle programme - and it's the safest way to lose weight, according to the nation's top docs.

The NHS 12-week weight loss plan is scientifically-based anddesigned to help you lose weight at a safe rate of 0.5kg to 1kg (1lb to 2lb) each week by sticking to a daily calorie allowance.

For most men, this means sticking to a calorie limit of no more than 1,900kcal a day, and 1,400kcal for most women.

If you go over your limit one day, do not worry - it simply means you'll have to reduce your calorie intake on the following days.

The vegan diet is a plant-based, meat-free diet, which means avoiding eggs, dairy, and for some, honey too.

It consists solely of beans, grains, fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables.

However, there are many substitutes which can be used in place of animal-based ingredients.

For example, cow's milk can be replaced with soy milk, and vegan margarine is a great alternative to butter.

According to scientists at Sheffield Hallam Uni, long-term vegans have lower total cholesterol than non-vegans.

Writing inThe Conversation, the study's author, Markos Klonizakis, said: "Our study found that the vegan diet offers benefits in the reduction of cholesterol levels.

"On the other hand, we did find that participants who followed the vegan diet appeared to also have a reduction in a number of important micro-nutrients such as B12 vitamin and iodine.

"This is despite us providing B12 supplements to participants."

Can't bear the thought of quitting meat entirely?

You don't have to - but you might want to limit how much you eat to once or twice a week.

Significantly reducing how much meat you eat has been proven to be effective in combating heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

In fact, flexitarians can reduce their likelihood of developing diabetes by a massive 28 per cent simply by reducing the number of times they eat meat.

WW - formerly known as Weight Watchers was ranked first for the best diet for weight loss and best commercial diet, according to US News.

It assigns point values to food based on their calorie, sugar, saturated fat andprotein content.

The healthiest foods havezero points, meaning that you can eat as much of them as you like.

You're given a daily point total which you meet by keeping a food diary.

You may have heard of "keto" and thought it was a fad, made popular by celebrities including the Kardashians and Halle Berry.

But the keto diet - or ketogenic diet - was actually developed by experts in the 1920s to treat children with epilepsy.

Similar to the Atkins diet, it's low-carb high-fat.

Writing in The Conversation, Sophie Medlin, a lecturer in nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, said: "The keto diet got its name because ketones are the source of energy that the body uses when its burning fat.

"Ketones are produced in weight loss regardless of the type of diet you are following. So, actually, anyone who is losing weight is actually on a keto diet.

"Most people calling their diet a keto diet are simply following a low or very low carbohydrate diet.

"Low carbohydrate diets can be helpful, at least in the short term, for some people to lose weight. However, as with the true ketogenic diet, most people cant stick with a very low carbohydrate diet for long.

"The latest research shows that its the ability to stick to the diet that matters.

"So if a low carbohydrate diet or keto diet is a practice that works for you and you are able to maintain it for as long as it takes to lose excess body fat and you are meeting your nutritional requirements then the science says that this should be encouraged."

New Year, New You: Tips for getting fit in the new year – 13abc Action News

TOLEDO (WTVG) - New Year, New Me. It's a common phrase when the clock strikes midnight on January first, and three days into 2020, local gym-goers are already hard at work at their new goals.

"I try to be consistent every year I try to set a goal, a pace, something to achieve," says Tony Fondren. "I find if I enter a competition with a group of people, whether it's a race of some kind, I'm more focused and dedicated."

"Actually I work with a personal trainer," explains Pamela Weitzel. "3 days a week I get up bright and early and she guides me through what I need to do."

Marcus Zapata, personal trainer and gym owner, says the best tips for a healthy New Year include setting realistic goals, having an accountability partner to keep you on track with your routine, and understanding your limitations.

"Working out should feel good," says Zapata. "You should feel a little bit sore, a little pain while you're working out due to lactic acid burn, but understand what pain is good compared to what pain is bad, so when you start feeling sharp acute pains, that's probably a sign you should scale back, and maybe reassess your form or reassess your weight."

These days there are a lot of diet and exercise programs out there claiming to help you lose weight fast. But in the long run ... do they really work?

"The short answer to that is no," explains Heather Harris, personal trainer, and licensed dietitian. "But the long answer would basically be anytime when someone is so dogmatic about something really beware of that. Just because it might work for one person doesn't mean it's going to work for you or for everybody."

Experts also advise that if you're looking for a more personalized plan, seek out help from a licensed dietitian and certified personal trainers.

"New Year new me, motivates me by the fact that I'm 68 years old and so I have to I want to be here for another 20 more years and so I want to be healthy," says Weitzel. "New Year, long years."

‘People have always gone to extremes to lose weight’ – Independent.ie

'People have always gone to extremes to lose weight'

https://www.independent.ie/life/health-wellbeing/d01d5/37743369.ece/AUTOCROP/h342/P26.work-based.JPG

Here we are, once again in the purge part of the annual binge-purge cycle. We do this every year so that by the summer holidays we will be what is termed 'beach ready' - or at least a bit less fat, after a month of mince pies and gin cocktails.

There are around 30,000 diet books on the market, despite widespread acknowledgment that diets don't work. One fifth of Britain and Ireland is on a diet at any given time, and slim people - that is, those with a BMI of 25 or less - are in the minority. Since World War II, we have become wider, taller, heavier.

Modern humanity does not, however, hold the monopoly on fad diets, despite many people currently thinking that copying the diet of our Palaeolithic ancestors is a good idea. (It isn't. We don't know what people ate in the Palaeolithic era, plus life expectancy back then was about 25.)

People have always gone to extremes to lose weight, very often relying on bad science. Only recently are we starting to realise that long-held assumptions around calorie-counting are wrong, because the body burns calories differently, depending on food type. A chocolate brownie calorie does not equal a carrot calorie. We have long been told that it does.

In his book The Diet Myth, genetic epidemiologist Tim Spector writes about the "misleading medical calorie dogma", and the importance of the microbiome, which "predicts obesity better than genes", and the importance of "diverse microbial gardens to flourish".

He recounts an experiment conducted with his wife to show how when it comes to diet, one size does not fit all. Both ate bread and pasta, and tested their blood sugar. Then they both ate grapes and orange juice, and tested it again. The bread and pasta caused a blood sugar spike in his wife, while barely registering with him; the opposite happened with the fruit.

"Confusing and conflicting messages are everywhere," he writes. "Knowing who and what to believe is a big problem." And now that we are online, we can access bad science and quack diets in seconds. But they pre-date the internet by centuries.

The 11th-century Persian physician Avicenna, one of the early fathers of modern medicine, advised eating bulky low-nutrient food, and encouraging it to pass quickly through the body with the aid of laxatives and exercise; he was one of the first to link food reduction with recovery from disease. The first printed cookbook, published in Latin in Rome around 1470, was titled On Honest Indulgence & Good Health. It was an early best-seller. This was followed by the earliest diet book in 1598 - The Art of Living Long by another Italian, said to have lived on one egg yolk a day.

In England, an overweight doctor called George Cheyne (1671-1743) linked obesity and depression, and advocated teetotal vegetarianism - his fans included Samuel Johnson and Alexander Pope. In 1820, a porky Lord Byron kick-started the celebrity diet that haunts us to this day, with the Vinegar Diet, in which he used apple cider vinegar as an appetite suppressant. Apparently it worked.

In 1864, Banting became all the rage after a publication, Letter on Corpulence, became a best-seller. Dr William Banting advocated a diet of just meat and fruit to a fat undertaker who had tried everything to lose weight but could not. The man lost 29kg in a year and kept it off, pre-dating the Atkins diet by a century.

During the Edwardian era, Horace Fletcher, an American known as the Great Masticator, promoted chewing 100 to 700 times, and swallowing only the resulting liquid. "Nature will castigate those who don't masticate," he said, promising his followers that they would poo only once a fortnight, and that it would smell of biscuits - he carried a sample around with him in a tin, to show people. Franz Kafka and Henry James were fans.

The early 20th century saw prototype fitness guru Sylvia of Hollywood trying to pummel the fat out of movie stars "like mashed potato through a colander"; she was employed by Pathe Studios for $750 a week, and as well as diet books, in 1932 wrote an indiscreet tell-all, Hollywood Undressed.

In 1939 diet guru - and Greta Garbo's lover - Benjamin Hauser published Eat & Grow Beautiful. Movie stars, he said "simply can't afford to become fat and unattractive." Two years later, Stanley Burroughs created the Master Cleanse, aka the Lemonade Diet, involving nothing more than lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper for at least 10 days. People still do it - most famously, Beyonce in 2006.

Some diets were deadly, as well as disgusting. The Last Chance diet of 1976 involved a low-calorie meat smoothie of pre-digested animal by-products - hooves, hide, horns - which was taken off the market after several people died. Psychosis-inducing amphetamine diet pills enjoyed quite a moment during the 20th century, immortalised in Darren Aronofsky's film Requiem For A Dream, but Elvis Presley used pills to knock himself out in what was known as the Sleeping Beauty Diet, the idea being that you could sleep yourself thin. Turns out he couldn't.

When it comes to food, we employ all kinds of mind games to trick ourselves - Andy Warhol's routine in restaurants involved ordering food he disliked, putting it in a doggy bag, and later giving it to a homeless person. A French diet, Le Forking, involves eating only food that can be speared on a fork - broccoli, basically - while several American diets such as Pray Yourself Slim and the Daniel Fast (21 days of fruit, veg and grains) are popular with Christians.

While many diets remain scientifically suspect: does eating alkaline foods, superfoods, raw foods, foods that put the body into ketosis - think constipation and bad breath - really work? Dieters are nothing if not optimistic; or - if you apply Einstein's definition of doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results - insane. Perhaps then, the greatest dieting advice ever comes from Miss Piggy: never eat more than you can lift.

The Hay Diet, of which business magnate Henry Ford was a fan, involved food combining, and was developed by New York doctor William Hay in the 1920s. It was complicated. "Any carbohydrate foods require alkaline conditions for their complete digestion, so must not be combined with acids of any kind, such as sour fruits, because the acid will neutralise. Neither should these be combined with a protein of the concentrated sort as these protein foods will excite too much hydrochloric acid during their stomach digestion," wrote Dr Hay in How To Always Be Well.

the Beverley Hills Diet, created by Judy Mazel in 1981, sold over a million copies and was popular with Engelbert Humperdinck and Dallas star Linda Gray. Like the Hay, it involved food combining, but was ultimately dismissed as quackery.

The Atkins Diet, formulated by cardiologist Robert Atkins in 1989, sold us the idea of carbs bad / fat and protein good. You could have all the meat and cheese you wanted, but no toast. When Dr Atkins died from slipping on ice, his medical records revealed a history of heart attacks and congestive heart failure.

The South Beach Diet, from physician Arthur Agatson, was 2003's weight management best-seller. Originally called the Modified Carbohydrate diet, it became known after its place of origin, Miami's South Beach. Agatson believed in 'good' carbs and 'bad' carbs, and advocated low-glycaemic foods. See also the GI Diet.

The Dukan Diet, developed by doctor Pierre Dukan, is a high-protein, low-carb regime in four stages, popular in the 2000s. Despite its popularity, it is associated with renal and cardiovascular issues, and should be avoided, according to the British Dietetic Association.

The 5:2 Diet takes an ancient idea - intermittent fasting, in the past associated with religious pursuits -and hitches it to weight-management and well-being. You fast for two days a week, and eat normally the other five days. The idea is that the body has a chance to rest from digesting, which not only regulates weight, but improves overall health. Side effects include outbreaks of hungry-angry, but unlike having carb-free steak and cream for breakfast, it is a relatively sensible way of regulating your weight.

In this article, we'll try to explain the basics of how to lose weight with fasting and also touch on what fasting is in the first place, is fasting safe, what can you eat when you fast and provide you with some fasting tips on how to start this type of diet, even today. It'll help you get fit in 2020.

We can assume two things about people reading this article:

1. You are interested in fasting2. You would like to lose some weight

The most popular type of fasting for weight loss is the 16:8 diet, but the principles can be applied in various ways. We also recommend reading our story on how to lose weight fast, which provide you with some handy tips about the topic. Let's not forget, we also covered keto diet, as an alternative.

Exercising is also a great way to lose some excess weight and you've guessed it! we have things to say about that, too: we can help you to get into running with some super couch-to-5k training tips as well as resistance training plans, like our two-day push-pull plan or you can also try our beginner calisthenics workout plan.

Without further ado, let's get right into it.

IMPORTANT: if you have a history of eating disorders, have loads of extra weight, are pregnant or just concerned about starting fasting in general, please consult your doctor before you start fasting. it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to health-related issues. Also, children are not advised to fast. Please be sensible.

Fasting is a type of cyclical diet regime

To clarify, when we talk about fasting here, we mean intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is a cyclical calorie intake routine that alternates between periods of no food intake (a.k.a. fasting) and periods of calorie consumption (any other time outside the fasting period).

The most popular way of fasting is the 16:8 diet method, when you fast for 16 hours and only eat in an 8-hour window. There are other fasting techniques, such as the 5:2 diet, where people largely but not entirely skip eating for two days during the week. There are also more extreme versions, which we don't recommend.

Fasting has been scientifically proven to be a useful tool for lose weight, if for no other reason, because you naturally eat less if you restrict your consumption for fewer hours a day. This will also give your body time to repair, since it's not preoccupied with the digestion and storage of food.

A balance diet is still very important, even if you aren't planning on fasting

The most popular way of fasting is the aforementioned 16 8 diet method. This way, you reduce your calorie consumption window from infinity to 8 hours a day. For the remaining 16 hours, you can still drink water (and you should drink water, plenty of it), black coffee and green tea.

The easiest way to get into fasting is to introduce the concept to your body gradually. By not jumping right into it, you are more likely to stick with it and turn it into a habit, which will help you effectively keep down the lost pounds.

Start off by not eating anything from 8 PM until 8 AM the next day. With this, you are already limiting yourself to eat only for 12 hours a day, and even better, you will sleep through most of it.

Over a period of a week or two, gradually increase the fasting window from 8 to 12 hours, by adding an extra hour in either in the evening or the morning. The most common way is to do a 16-hour fast is to stop eating at 7-8 PM and finish it at 11 AM-12 PM the next day.

You can start fasting at any point, no need to wait until the 1 January. The sooner you start the process, the earlier you will see results. Easy as that.

Avoid processed food, bad carbs, unhealthy fats and added sugar

It is recommended not to take in any calories during fasting, only liquids. Water is something you should drink anyway, but it is especially important to drink plenty of water when you fast. Black coffee and green tea are also permitted during the fasting phase, but don't overdo them. They both contain caffeine so over-consumption can lead to unwanted side effects.

As for outside the fasting window, there is no restriction of what you can or cannot eat, but it is recommended to avoid processed and fast food as well as excessive alcohol consumption. In general, try not to cut back on calories too much, especially at the beginning, to help your body adjust better.

Once you used to fasting, you can introduce other changes in your diet, like avoiding added sugar, food with high glycemic index, bad fats and so on. Try to plan ahead on what will you snack on when cravings arrive, because they will most definitely come at some point during the day. Protein and nutrition bars are a great way to combat cravings throughout the day.

Fasting is safe, especially if you don't go crazy from Day 1 (or ever)

Fasting is safe as long as you don't overdo it. If someone go from a high-calorie and high-sugar diet to not eating for 16 hours, they will feel dizzy and jittery, due to the withdrawal effects from their previous dieting habits.

As with any diet, be sensible when you start fasting. As mentioned above, try gradually increasing your fasting window and try not to cut too many calories from one day to another. By not eating for 8-12 hours, you will naturally take in less calories, without any other restrictive factors.

Once you are comfortable with fasting, you can try and switch to healthier diet overall. The key is, as before, to be unhurried with the process, and swap bad things out one at a time.

For example, instead of having a Mars bar, have a protein bar in the afternoon or instead of having a triple shot vanilla latte with extra cream after lunch, have a smaller cappucino. And of course, instead of having a side of fries, have some baked potatoes or even better, baked sweet potatoes.

By cutting added sugar out of your diet, you can also avoid the highs and lows you feel when you eat the sweet white substance. We'll discuss this in another article.

Start with some light exercising at the beginning

It is safe to work out after the initial transition period.

It is not recommended, however, to start working out heavily as soon as you start your new fasting diet. This is especially true to people who go from a high-sugar diet to fasting. The withdrawal symptoms from taking less sugar is not a safe way to start working with heavy weights.

Light exercising is permitted even at the beginning, let it be some jogging or easy cycling. Again, it is important not to put your body under too much stress.

If you are planning on gaining muscle mass, you can still benefit from fasting, but probably not the 16 8 diet method. You might want to try going a day or two without eating a week, to rid your body from toxins. Ideally, fast on your rest days so it won't effect your performance in the gym.

If you would like to work out on fast days, take some BCAAs to aid muscle repair. BCAA powders and pills contain no calories and therefore won't break your fasting period. Needless to say, mix it water and not milk or milk substitutes.

Supplements like creatine and Nitric Oxide pills (a pre workout that contains no stimulants) are also safe to consume during fasting since they contain no calories either.

Fasting is an excellent way to lose weight and to rid your body of toxins. Even better, you naturally lower your calorie intake by not allowing yourself to eat whenever you want to. This can not only help you lose weight without much effort, it will also help you practice some discipline over your own body, keeping your mind in control over your cravings.

As with all dieting methods, being sensible is key when it comes to fasting. Don't try to change everything too fast; allow your body to adjust to the different requirements. If you would like to further aid your weight loss, you can also introduce some light exercising when you begin fasting, like easy jogging or light cycling, which in turn will also release serotonin on your body.

At the end of the day, it is all about achieving and maintaining a balanced lifestyle and bodyweight and reap the long term benefits of being happier and healthier.

New Orleans Pelicans vice president on Zion Williamson’s return: ‘When hes ready, hes going to play’ – USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES --- The Pelicans have heard the rumors surrounding Zion Williamsons injury. So, New Orleans lead executive dismissed it as fast and strong as one of the dunks that the franchises star rookie will throwdown.

You see the narrative out there that we will intentionally shut him down. Or that theyre idiots for not shutting him down, Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin told USA TODAY Sports. Well, which is it? The reality is when hes ready, hes going to play.

When will Williamson play?

The Pelicans lack clarity onthat question. Williamson participated in his first practice on Thursday after tearing his right lateral meniscus before the teams season opener. Prior to the Pelicans 123-113 loss to the Lakers on Friday at Staples Center, Williamson completed both a 3-on-3 non-contact scrimmage and pre-game warmup that entailed throwing down a handful of dunks. Griffin said he thought Williamson looked tremendous with his explosiveness.

Griffin added, though, that Williamson is going to have to practice several more times before the Pelicans clear him to play. The only problem? Griffin noted, we dont have the days to do it. The Pelicans wont practice on Sunday since they will have played back-to-back games against the Lakers and Sacramento (Saturday). Williamson is scheduled to practice on Jan 7, but the Pelicans then have a game against Chicago on Jan 8 followed by a three-game trip to New York (Jan 10), Boston (Jan 11) and Detroit (Jan 13). The Pelicans have mostly minimized practices to account for the Pelicans (11-23) missing a combined 105 games because of injuries. They also face logistical challenges sending Williamson down to their G-League affiliate because that team is based in Erie, Pa.

WE'RE TALKING PRACTICE:Williamson returns to full practice

OPINION:LeBron James-type expectations

Given those scenarios, it appears Williamson could return during the Pelicans home-stand against Utah (Jan. 16) and the Los Angeles Clippers (Jan. 18). That isbecause the Pelicans have three potential practice days that week. Then again, the Pelicans have declined to pin a timetable on Williamsons return.

I think he would be out there right now if it were up to him. But we have to protect him from himself sometimes, Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told USA TODAY Sports. Hes going through everything hes going to go through. When the time comes, well play him. Obviously well be overly cautious of that.

The Pelicans initially ruled Williamson out for six to eight weeks, which left the possibility open that he could return in early or mid December. Though Williamson remains sidelined a month later, Griffin stressed that Williamson did not experienceany setbacks with his surgically repaired right knee. Instead, the Pelicans medical staff took a cautious approach with Williamson after he also sprained his right knee during his freshman season at Duke and bruised his left knee during summer league play.

Griffin said the Pelicans are not concerned about Williamson needing to lose weight from his listed 6-foot-6, 284-pound frame. Instead, the Pelicans training staff has worked with Williamson to improve his range of motion with both his feet and hips in hopes that he becomes less susceptible to future injuries.

Hes been fine. We went way slower than we wouldve with a 28-year-old veteran who had a really efficient movement pattern, Griffin said. So we thought wed address it. My job is not to get him on the court fast. Its to keep him on the court.

That does not mean, however, that the Pelicans have considered shutting Williamson down for all of his rookie season. After Williamson averaged 23.3 points and shooting 71.4% from the field in pre-season play, the Pelicans hope they can play their No. 1 pick with a young roster that also features fourth-year forward Brandon Ingram, third-year guard Lonzo Ball as well as veterans Derrick Favors, Jrue Holiday and J.J. Redick. The Pelicans (11-24) are still only four games behind for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Theres no value in having a healthy player not play, Griffin said. I dont see value in what a lot of tanking teams are doing with sitting healthy players. Youre teaching guys that losing is an acceptable outcome. Thatsnot what we want our young players to learn. Were trying to build a culture from the ground up here. Healthy players play. They sacrifice for each other. In this case, we havent wanted him to go because we didnt feel like he could stay healthy. When he can stay healthy, hes going to play.

When that will happen remains unclear. But it appears imminent.

"It’s not even about being skinny.": One woman’s solution to weight loss – WSAW

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAW) -- It's a story of transformation for Melissa Leopold when she finally found an option that worked for her and ended up losing more than 140 pounds.

"I couldn't take where I was at anymore. It was very defeating and depressing to try so hard with no success," said Leopold.

Melissa had been battling with her weight since having children in her 20's. She weighed more than 270 pounds.

"I worked very hard, lots of diets, and everything you can imagine." Nothing worked for her that's when she tried something new.

Bariatric surgery restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold and along with diet can help people lose weight fast. "A comprehension treatment plan where the surgeon, dietitian, and psychologist all work together," explained Dr. Julio Bird, Surgeon at the Marshfield Clinic.

It was option Melissa had been looking at for three years. "It's not even about being skinny but just more healthy and active."

Melissa went through the surgery in February of 2018. It's coming up on two years since then and she has completely changed.

Transformations like this is the reason Dr. Bird does this. "It is incredibly rewarding and it keeps me doing what I am doing."

As for what's next for Melissa. "Really looking forward to living life. I want to travel more and do stuff that I felt more restricted of doing before," said Leopold.
