Now, Abigail weighs 10st 10lbs and is a UK size 6 a change that has made a dramatic difference in her every day life.

She continued: If you would have told me two years ago that I would lose seven stone, become a personal trainer and health coach, I would have laughed.

"My life went from sedentary to active. Where I once hid in the comfort of my own home, I now raise the bar for myself daily and I am constantly putting myself out there for new opportunities.

"I love myself in a way that I never have before and feel a true sense of self and inner peace. For the first time in too long, I am genuinely happy and excited for the future.

Before Abigail took charge of her lifestyle, she would binge on junk food. Now she mainly eats lean proteins, vegetables and fruit.

Start with what you have; do what you can. I knew nothing, I had no plan. I started obese. I started broke. If you truly want something, you can't let anything get in your way.

"Cloud your mind with motivation, inspiration and encouragement. Stay focused on your goals and remind yourself why they are important to you every single day. It will always be you versus you; only you get to decide how successful you will be."

Weight loss diets usually include lots of plants and lean meat, thought to be healthy.

However, a doctor is claiming that this one type of protein, found in plants, may be stopping your weight loss.

In a book called The Plant Paradox, a heart surgeon has explained why these proteins are so bad.

Known as lectins, they cause inflammation in the body that can cause weight gain. Whats more, it can also increase your chances of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

The author of the book Steven Gundry, M.D. says lectins occur in many types of food, such as non-organic animal products, grains and vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers.

This means that what dieters think is the perfect salad, may well be hiding a host of products that could cause weight gain.

He describes the reaction caused by lectins as creating chemical warfare in our bodies.

The types of vegetables that contain lectins, known as nightshades, have already been banned from a number of celebrity diets.

Famously, Gisele Bndchen and her professional athlete husband Tom Brady have cut nightshades from their meal plans.

So how do you cut out lectins from your diet?

One trick that Dr. Gundry advises is to peel your vegetables - as most lectins are in the skin. It is also good to remove the seeds too, to limit the number of lectins in your meal.

Its definitely good to hear that it takes most people longer than five weeks to drop 10 pounds (you're not alone if the scale seems stuck!), and that its also doable within three months or so. But if youre trying to drop 10 pounds, its important to keep this in mind: Everyone moves at their own pace.

There are calculations to predict the calorie deficit needed for someone to lose a pound of weight. However in reality, people lose weight as different rates, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, agrees. Its not the rate of weight loss that matters, per se, she says. Its the sustainability of the weight loss. People who are obese, for example, might lose weight at a very fast rate, she says, while others with less excess weight to lose may move at a slower paceand the actual rate doesnt matter as much as someones ability to keep the weight off.

While its tempting to want to drop weight quickly, Warren says its important to manage your expectations and go about it in a smart, healthy way. Losing weight through unhealthy methods could just burn off water and muscle weight, which youll quickly gain back, she says.

Scott Keatley, R.D., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, recommends starting with small changes before moving on to a new challenge. For example, you might want to try eliminating your late-night snacking habit and adding a serving of vegetables to every meal before trying an entirely new diet plan. Its important to ask, is this going to be sustainable indefinitely? If not, reconsider the approach, Stanford says. Make sure its something you can continue forever.

If youve already lost the weight and want to make sure you keep it off, Warren recommends keeping a food log and striving to work out regularly. The reality is that after you lose the weight you want you look to be more flexible on food choices, she says. By keeping a food log, it keeps you on track to notice when you are allowing yourself too many less healthful choices or bigger portions too often. Working out regularly also helps you balance out your flexible food choices without making you feel guilty for it, she says.

I joined a Crossfit gym that completely changed my workout routine.

Crossfit incorporates every type of workout including cardio, weightlifting, gymnastics, and strength training all at different intensity levels.

Green tea has been found to leave drinkers fuller for longer, according to Swedish research.

Scientists in Sweden found sipping Japanese sencha, a type of green tea, straight after eating will helped to keep participants full for up to two hours.

Drunk immediately after lunch, and this means mid-afternoon cravings could be stopped in their tracks.

Not only that, but the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found green tea boosts metabolism.

The catechins in green tea are responsible for the boost, and also increase calorie burn by up to four per cent.

And those who eat a high protein, low carb diet may also want to add a cup of the green stuff to their menu.

The cholesterol levels in red meat are high, but a Chinese study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine discovered the antioxidants in green tea lower harmful LDL cholesterol and reduce risks of a heart attack by 11 per cent.

There have also been studies performed on overweight people to see how drinking green tea would effect their waistline.

Researchers were surprised to find big shifts in weight for those who drank green tea regularly.

Moderately overweight people where given two drinks each a day.

For one group all were placebos, the other had one serving of green tea while the other had two.

Scientists who carried out the research, in Shanghai, China, found: We observed a decrease in estimated intra-abdominal fat in the GT3 group, or the group with two servings of green tea.

In addition, we found decreases of 1.9 cm in waist circumference and 1.2 kg body weight.

The study did not include any other changes in diet or exercise.

A similar study that aimed to measure the effects of green tea on overweight Thai patients found the same thing.

We conclude that green tea can reduce body weight in obese Thai subjects by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation, the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, at Khon Kaen University found.

Weight loss: How to lose weight by eating MORE with this diet plan – Express.co.uk

The ketogenic keto diet has become incredibly popular in recent years as it focuses on eating plenty and not restricting meals in the same way as other meal plans tend to do.

The diet does involve limiting carbs to 50 grams or less, which puts the body into a state of ketosis, when the body turn to ketones to create energy.

Talking about the plan, Carol Johnston, professor and associate director of the nutrition program in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, revealed how it works and whether she thinks it is a sensible diet to follow.

The science behind the keto diet claims followers must consume a high fat, low carb diet, similar to the Atkins Diet.

Discussing whether she thinks this is sensible, Prof. Johnston said: There is mounting evidence that suggests calorie restricted, low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets are effective for weight loss, and the keto diet is an extreme version of this.

Low-carb diets can be more satiating, allowing dieters to feel full longer, eat less, and thus experience greater weight loss success.

Speaking to medicalxpress.com, she continued: Overwhelmingly, the most important factor in weight loss success is diet adherence. In research trials, most individuals who lose weight regain most of it within a year, regardless of which diet they were on.

Explaining the science behind the diet, Prof. Johnston said: When carb intake is restricted for a few days, glycogen stores in the muscle are reduced. Glycogen is responsible for water retention, so when its levels fall, so do our water levels.

However, she point out, since most of this weight lost is water weight, it will return when the person consumes carbs again.

But despite her assertion that the keto diet mostly encourages water weight to begin with, Prof. Johnston did admit restricting carbs is a good idea for weight management.

She said: When we eat more carbs than we need, they convert to body fat, which contributes to obesity.

In general, average Americans those with a relatively sedentary lifestyle consume more carbs and calories than they actually need.

Another expert who has spoken positively about the keto diet is Susie Burrell, a dietician and nutritionist with two Honours degrees in Nutrition & Dietetics and Psychology.

She has told dieters that there are many benefits to the keto diet plan.

She wrote for news.com of the keto diet: With their superior weight loss and associated reductions in inflammation in the body, there are a number of benefits, particularly for individuals with high blood glucose levels, fatty liver and significant amounts of weight to lose.

She also said: There is no evidence to show that keto diets are damaging to the body.

What’s A Safe Amount Of Weight To Lose In A Week? – Huffington Post Australia

When we set out to get into shape and start to eat healthily and exercise, the question that's on all of our minds is: how long will it take to lose weight and see results?

Naturally, when we hop on the scales after a week of working hard, we want to see a fat loss of at least two or three kilos. When it doesn't go to plan, this is often when we turn to fad diets, restricting food or excessively exercising.

But is quick weight loss really that safe, or even sustainable?

According to nutritionist Fiona Tuck and accredited practising dietitian and sports dietitian Jessica Spendlove, there's no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss.

"The one thing I tell all the athletes and clients I work with is: if it sounds too good to be true, it is. That is definitely the case when it comes to quick fixes and magic bullets with weight loss," Spendlove told HuffPost Australia.

"It might not sound as appealing as a magic bullet, but the most sustainable way to lose weight is through improvements to your daily routine and lifestyle, in particular better eating habits and more movement."

"Eating fresh, minimally processed foods and controlled portion sizes is the most effective way to lose weight. Eighty percent is what we eat, 20 percent is exercise," Tuck told HuffPost Australia.

"To most effectively lose body fat we need to find a good balance with what we are eating and what training we are doing," Spendlove added.

If we are restricting foods, exercising too much or doing 'detoxes', this can actually throw our bodies out of whack, which makes losing weight even harder.

"One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is they over-restrict on training days or around intense training sessions, but then end up overeating on low output [rest] days," Spendlove said.

"Most people go wrong by undereating on the days they have trained, when they can afford to eat more, and their body will actually utilise the nutrients better. Getting the energy intake and output balance in check is key."

Although fast weight loss is a tempting idea, shedding kilos in a short amount of time is likely to result in muscle or water loss, not fat loss. Unlike healthy, sustainable weight loss, it means you're also more likely to put the weight back on once you resume normal eating patterns.

"Fast weight loss can be unsustainable. This is because when the body is in extreme energy deficit, it is programmed to lose muscle before fat. Fat loss is a much slower process, and to be successful it requires long-term sustainable improvements with diet, as well as exercise," Spendlove explained.

Fast weight loss can also result in the slowing down of your metabolism, which is not what we want.

"[Rapid weight loss] can lead to weight gain when someone starts to eat normally again. It can take the body into starvation mode, thereby lowering the metabolism, making it harder to lose weight long term and easier to gain," Tuck said.

Other side effects of quick weight loss can include imbalances of electrolytes, malnutrition, dehydration, fatigue, irritability, headaches, constipation, dizziness, irregular menstruation and loss of muscle.

While this answer depends on the person, their weight and current activity levels, there is a guideline for the safe amount of weight to lose in a week.

"I generally would recommend 0.51 kilogram per week across the board," Spendlove said. "Losing more than that is often not sustainable."

In the first couple of weeks, weight loss tends to be higher as excess fluid is often lost.

"Some people will therefore safely lose several kilos in the first few weeks, depending on body size," Tuck explained.

It's also important to keep in mind that if you don't see a change in weight but you feel leaner, this could mean you have gained muscle mass -- a great thing.

"Around one kilo per week is a safe amount to lose for most people. However, these factors vary and if muscle mass is being built, this may give a false reading as muscle weighs more than fat -- so the scales may suggest less weight is being lost than it actually is as fat is being lost but replaced by muscle," Tuck said.

"Muscle mass is the metabolic powerhouse, so the more muscle mass an individual has, the faster their metabolism will be," Spendlove added.

A general rule of thumb is you need to be in an energy deficit of around 7,000 calories (29,400 kilojoules) to lose one kilogram of fat.

A calorie deficit is a state in which you burn more calories than you consume. This means, to lose one kilo the difference between your basal metabolic rate (the energy you burn just by existing) and daily intake of energy (food) needs to be 7,000 calories over the course of the week.

"There are 7,700 calories in one kilogram, so if you wanted to lose weight at a rate of one kilogram per week, you would need to reduce your overall calorie intake by 7,700 calories, or 1,100 calories per day," Tuck said.

If reducing 1,100 calories each day feels unachievable, to lose 0.5 kilograms per week you need to be in a deficit of 3,500 calories, which equates to about 500 calories per day.

According to Spendlove, technically yes. This is for a few reasons, including:

"If you don't have much weight to lose, your body is slower at losing weight as it wants to ensure body weight does not go too low so you have some emergency energy reserves in times of need," Tuck explained.

"If you have more fat and fluid than the body could possibly need then it doesn't have to worry that there will be no emergency fat stores to use in times of survival."

Need/Want to Lose Weight? Run. – Uloop News

Ever look in the mirror and not like what you see? Well, I have. I have always had trouble keeping or maintaining a healthy weight. At a young age, I was criticized and humiliated for being fat or not perfect by societys standards.

After a while, I knew I had to make some drastic changes in my life and I was willing to put in the hard work to be healthy and to stop being bullied in school. I was name called, I was pushed around, and more importantly, I felt horrible about myself. What I learned is to move on and to change myself.

America has been plagued by obesity and it is a big issue today. Although, running was a key factor in helping me shed unwanted weight and I still do it to this very day. I think that running is the key to losing weight, along with other key factors. In high school, I joined my schools football team to lose the weight and I was able to.

Running this summer about three to five days a week, I was able to lose some weight and minimize the big belly that I had. Now, I am a lot more confident about myself and I feel better. Running is actually pretty relaxing and it can help relieve a lot of stress. Since I have not played a sport since my high school days, I run outside my apartment complex in New Jersey for about 35 minutes to an hour. Some days at most I run for an hour and 30 minutes, but that is rare for me and is on my good days.

I would rather do my running outside than doing the traditional treadmill any day. You might ask why? Well, I find that running outside for me at least is not as boring because there is scenery to look at and it can be more of a challenge. One of the challenges is running in the hot weather and obviously, you can sweat more. Usually, after I finish my run my whole shirt or most of it is drenched in sweat. Although, this is a benefit because this helps in losing the weight fast and easy.I also cannot run on a treadmill because it makes me dizzy for some reason and I will admit that sometimes I get scared of missing a step or falling off of the machine and being pointed out or embarrassed by others.

I noticed that after a couple of weeks of sweating and breathing hard that I was, in fact, losing weight. I stepped on my scale and was shedding off a couple of pounds every week or two. Since the beginning of the summer, I have been able to lose 15 to 20 pounds. Additionally, I was building up my stamina too because I would do about 100-meter full speed sprints in between my runs. Despite the research saying that running is bad for you, I notice it is a great way to build stamina and lose weight effectively.

However, eating right is the other side of the constant battle. When I started my running routine I had to minimize junk food and eating late at night. I could not run for very long at first too because of how out of shape I was and how hard I was breathing. After a couple of days, I could see improvement in breathing and was able to run longer. I also drank a lot of water and stayed hydrated, always bringing a bottle of water with me during my run. It is essential to stay hydrated. Before I would even go outside to run, I made sure I had my Beat headphones for music that brings added motivation.

If a person wants, they can also lift weights. So that way you will not be losing a lot of muscle by running. Lifting weights at the same time could help maintain muscle mass.

What I learned after a while is that we cannot completely change our genetics or how our bodies are. We are all blessed with a different shape and everyone has their own imperfections. Our society glorifies unrealistic standards of beauty and shape that is almost impossible to obtain. No one is perfect in this world, so neither should our bodies be.

Being happy is the key to life and it always should be. But, if you want to lose some weight and in the right way, then run. It helped me out significantly and it can you too.

He then did a two and a half day fast and lost over ten pounds. He describes the first fast as his hardest ever; including a 20 day no calorie fast he did. He then kept going and figures he's done over 150 cumulative fasting dates since the first fast in January 2016.

Which Types of Fasting Get Better Results

Now here's the interesting part. He doesn't follow a set protocol. Some fasts are no calorie liquids, some very low calorie, some are a couple days, and some have gone as 20 days. He finds the stricter fasts work better, but gets good results from most varieties of fasts and says the most important thing is to make progress. He does reckon that five to seven day fast constitute the bulk of his fasts. He also doesn't eat super healthy when not fasting. He does try to eat mindfully, but between trying to avoid the metabolic slowdown again and finding that being really strict dieting wise distracts from the fasting he that illustrates an essentially foodie approach when not fasting.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but it's certainly a very different approach than any other 190 lb weight loser.

Also, interesting is the lack of a strict fasting protocol. Scheduling his fasts as motivated and fitting into his social calendar also flies in the face of conventional wisdom. He describes the efficacy of fasting itself as providing more than sufficient motivation after a lifetime of failed diets that in his view provided marginal long term benefits at the cost of basically making him physically ill in the short term.

David states that his appetite started to radically decrease after about forty days of fasting and that now he can feel full for several days after a day or two of heavy eating. He also exercises regularly, even during long fasts. He's found that not being able to exercise makes fasting harder since the exercise counteracts the boredom.

David's currently at a weight of 250lbs and is preparing for his final leg to his goal of 12% body fat per DEXA. He had 205 lbs of lean body mass per dexa at 305 lbs so he reckons based on minimal muscle loss that his final weight will need to be from 210-225lbs. He's excited that a lifetime of weight training might finally get to show. If he's off, he'll just keep going.

David wants to encourage everyone who have found traditional dietary advice to be untenable to give fasting a good go and that it really is different. He says his life has changed completely not only health wise, but socially as well and that his lifetime of struggling with diets payed off in the end. He also feels that different things works for different people, so not to judge yourself by people who might need only need to eat somewhat healthy to lose weight. Give something a good go and if that doesn't work than try something else is his philosophy. A weight loss study, published on July 17, from the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that one ingredient many Britons eat every day could be making them fat.

The report found artificial sweeteners may be associated with long-term weight gain and increased risk of obesity.

And not only will they scupper your weight loss aspirations, they can also increase your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, according to the new study.

Cutting foods high in these artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, neotame, saccharin and sucralose is one simply way to keep off the pounds.

Britons should be careful of the foods they consume in terms of sweeteners, as its not just the obvious fizzy drinks and sweets that have them.

Researchers from George Washington University found three-quarters of packaged foods have artificial sweeteners inside.

They include ketchup, whole-wheat bread, greek yoghurt, cereal and sugar-free chewing gum.

So make sure you thoroughly read packets to stay away from the artificial sweeteners.

The NHS said: Artificial sweeteners are low-calorie or calorie-free chemical substances that are used instead of sugar to sweeten foods and drinks.

They are found in thousands of products, from drinks, desserts and ready meals, to cakes, chewing gum and toothpaste.

However, the new research indicates that artificial sweeteners may have negative effects on metabolism, gut bacteria and appetite.

Author Dr. Ryan Zarychanski said: "We found that data from clinical trials do not clearly support the intended benefits of artificial sweeteners for weight management."

Dr. Meghan Azad added: "Given the widespread and increasing use of artificial sweeteners, and the current epidemic of obesity and related diseases, more research is needed to determine the long-term risks and benefits of these products.

Now scientists have claimed that maintaining a low calorie diet is crucial to staying young after studying how the human body clock changes with age.

The research team believes that avoiding high calorie foods makes the metabolism perform like that of a younger person.
