Eating Your Way Back to Health: Former Miss Florida Discusses Bulimia

ST. PETERSBURG | Allison Kreiger's eating disorder started when she was just 13 and continued until she was a senior in high school. She didn't set out to lose weight, but to gain control over a life that felt out of control to a young girl.

Anorexia can cause dramatic weight loss, making it more visible. But Kreiger, who would go on to be crowned Miss Florida in 2006, started out with the binging and purging condition bulimia.
Her weight seemed stable until anorexia took over in her senior year. Kreiger, already slim, quickly dropped 30 pounds, making apparent the damage years of purging had caused. She lost much of her hair, her eyes were bloodshot from chronic vomiting, her teeth were corroded by stomach acid, her heart was weak.
"I am very lucky to be alive," says Kreiger, now 29, who is married, a new mother, and a recent law school graduate.
As Miss Florida, the Orlando resident adopted eating disorder awareness as her service platform. "It's a scary disease with a lot of shame," said Kreiger, "and eating disorders are rampant on school campuses everywhere."
Kreiger's advocacy continues at the University of Florida and her nonprofit organization, HOPE, Helping Other People Eat. She is on the board of the National Eating Disorders Association and is at its annual conference, through Saturday at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg.
Kreiger spoke this week about her work and her recovery.
Q. Why did your life feel so out of control at age 13?

Therasan LLC Announces New Brand Raspberry Ketone Pro
Therasan LLC has developed a premier blend of Natural weight loss supplements to create the ultimate weight loss supplement, Raspberry Ketone Pro.
Lindon, Utah (PRWEB) October 11, 2012
The product, called Raspberry Ketone Pro, is designed to shrink fat cells and burn fat without diet or exercise. A natural phenolic substance that is responsible for the scent and color of raspberries, ketones have been recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Studies have found that raspberry ketones effectively help the body to burn fat faster and target stubborn fatty areas in the body.
The announcement comes as many new companies are attempting to create fad diets to target individuals who are struggling to lose weight. However, studies show that attempting to lose weight with raspberry ketone products is safer than trend diets that severely restrict calories or carbohydrates. With Raspberry Ketone Pro, diet and exercise are not required in order to experience weight loss.
While a lot of people will add Raspberry Ketone Pro to their diet and exercise program, its not required that individuals exercise at all in order to lose weight with Raspberry Ketones according to some studies, says Therasan LLC owner Steve Stay. Raspberry Ketone Pro works with the body to target fat deposits and burn them quickly and effectively, making it easier to lose weight without plateaus and without instantly regaining the weight after the diet is over, because this product just doesnt work that way.
It should also be noted that Raspberry Ketone Pro contains African Mango extract, which was also mentioned by Dr. Oz as a powerful product that helped to target fat within the body. African Mango extract has been tested extensively, and has been found to significantly increase fat loss within the body. It has also been proven to have other important benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and helping to regulate blood sugar.
In more than one study, African Mango was found to specifically target stubborn fat deposits in the body, such as those in the thigh, stomach and buttock area. It was also found to slow digestion, which results in a more stable and regulated blood glucose content.
The benefits of Raspberry Ketone Pro can be found at http://raspberryketonepro.com, and individuals are invited to learn more about the product there, as well as the benefits available and more.

Former Miss Florida talks about her struggle with eating disorders

Why did your life feel so out of control at age 13?
I was a competitive baton twirler from the age of 5. You had to train like gymnasts several hours in the gym every day and take dance classes at night. We had school performances on Fridays, competitions on Saturdays and Sundays we traveled home from competitions. By the time I was 13, I was over it.

Lisa Lampanelli Goes Under The Knife Loses 80 Pounds
Nicole Scherzinger Battles Bulimia And Comes Clean About The Pussycat Dolls | Home | Breaking Amish Recap: Brooklyn Bridge and Boner Woes
October 07, 2012 06:08 PM by Donna W. Martin
Celebrity Apprentice contestant, Lisa Lampanelli is best known as the plump funny stand-up comedian who loves to spout insults. But thanks to weight loss surgery that decreased the size of her stomach and limited food intake, Lisa has lost a whopping 80 pounds.
According to CNN, Lisa admits her problem with food, I was such an overeater, whose weight rose to 248 pounds at one point.
Lisa tried to lose weight for 32 years but nothing worked for the sharp-tongued comedian. She told Dr. Oz in an interview on October 3, I tried every single thing imaginable diet, exercise. I even bought a house on the health spa property and I still gained weight. For 32 years, from 18 to 50, I tried everything on the planet, and once I had a clean slate with that I said, You know what? Nothings working for me. Im going to treat this like the addiction that it is. Im going to get this surgery and use it as a tool. Thats all it is, a tool to help me get over it.
Post surgery and 80 pounds lighter, Lisa, 51 and a size 12 says shes a different person. Now I get full quickly at three, four bites, I have to stop. Now empowered to make better food choices, she says, I order food like a normal human being. If Im out to lunch, Im going to order three courses like everybody else. Im not going to feel like some kind of freak. So I always order soup, dessert and a sandwich or whatever main course. But then the idea is you have to eat such a small portion of it and bring the rest home.
Lisa finally beat the battle of the bulge with weight loss surgery. But according to The Inquisitr, she didnt lose her sharp wit along the way. When Dr. Oz commented on her portion size for a normal meal saying it looked more like a snack to him. Lisa sounded off with, Youre a skinny guy. What can I tell you? Youre the people we hate.
What do you think of Lisas decision to go under the knife? Or her 80 pound weight loss? Leave a comment below and let us know.

7 Ways to Lose Fat Fast—And Fit Into Your Skinny Jeans!
Mitzi Dulan
It's that time of year again when many of us regret the diet decisions we made over the summer as we realize our jeans are too tight! The all-inclusive vacation and trips to the beach and pool can often lead to some unwanted pounds by September and, as a result, poorly fitting jeans. Look your best, and get ready to slip into your skinny jeans with these tips to help you shape up quickly.
1. Eat protein at every meal. Eating enough protein will help you stay satisfied and resist the temptation to snack excessively between meals. If you want to lose weight, aim to eat approximately .7 grams of protein for each pound of your body weight. Just multiply your body weight, in pounds, by .7 to determine the number of protein grams to eat each day. Protein also helps boost your metabolism, since it takes more calories to metabolize compared to fat and carbohydrates. Some high-quality protein sources include: lean beef, chicken breast, fish, lentils, beans, and Greek yogurt.
2. Don't drink your calories. You've heard it many times before, but drinking your calories, with sugary drinks, juice, or alcohol, is an easy way to sabotage your diet. Dehydration, though, is an underlying cause of food cravings, so do drink plenty of water! Water helps to keep you full and is a key way to detox your body. To calculate your water needs, take your body weight and divide by two. This is the number of ounces of water you need to drink every day. If plain water sounds boring to you, flavor it with fruit or veggie slices for a fun twist.
3. Just log it. Writing down your food and beverage intake is critical to weight-loss success, because it keeps you accountable. My clients often tell me their eating habits get worse when they stop logging their food intake. Many great apps, such as My Fitness Pal, can help you keep track of your diet.
4. No eating after dinner. Late-night snacking is a problem for many people, especially when it's done mindlessly while watching TV or browsing the Internet. When you snack after dinner, your body will be busy digesting your food while you sleep instead of burning the fat. You want your body to be burning fat while you sleep so stop eating after dinner. This is a key to losing weight more quickly!
5. Eat three meals per day, not five or six small ones. As a registered dietitian for over 16 years, I have seen many people who are trying to lose weight graze all day long and never stop eating except to sleep. Shifting to a three-meals-per-day mentality helps them to focus on eating a good source of protein and a whole grain along with fruits and vegetables at mealtime. Eat a satisfying meal, and wait to eat again until the next meal. That also puts your body into the calorie deficit you need to start losing body fat.
6. Try high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Most people stick to the same 'ole, same 'ole at the gym without getting the results they crave. If you want change, you must try high-intensity interval training, which is an excellent way to help you lose fat. Getting your heart rate above 75 percent of its maximum rate has been shown to increase your metabolism, which helps you burn more calories. High-intensity exercise burns nine times more fat per calorie than low-intensity exercise does. One of my favorite methods of HIIT is doing Tabatas, which were developed by Izumi Tabata, former training coach for the Japanese speed skating team and now dean of the Graduate School of Sport and Health Science at Japan's Ritsumeikan University. The basis of his method is to work at an extremely high level for short periods of time. Each workout is four minutes long, consisting of 20-second, high-intensity work followed by 10 seconds of rest; this continues for a total of eight cycles. This method has been transformational for the women in my Adventure Boot Camp class. Some examples of these exercises would be jump squats, burpees, and mountain climbers.
7. Don't forget strength training. Since people seem so focused on their cardio, they often forget about weight trainingmy favorite part of the gym. Strength training, whether you're male or female, can help you define and shape your muscles. It also boosts your metabolism. If you're really short on time, focus on your upper bodyarms can show definition faster than larger muscle groups. Try lifting weights three to four times per week for at least 30 minutes to see results.
What are your favorite get-in-shape-fast tricks?

Fat Burning Weight Loss Workouts
A fat burning weight loss workout that works must: 1. Burn Maximum Calories AND FAT - There is no benefit to calories burned without fat burning and there are soooo many workouts out there that only focus on the calorie burn without ever getting you into the real fat burning zone. Contrary to what you may have heard the fat burning zone isn't some magical place achieved by training at a certain heart rate. It's achieved with intense intervals and short recovery periods that force your body to start using fat as fuel so be sure to HIIT it often if you want to burn more fat. HIIT stands for intensity interval training and burns 9 times more fat than traditional workouts.
2. Be Challenging Yet Scalable - "If the system fails when a quantity increases, it does not scale" Not exactly sure who wrote that but it's true for any system including your body which may be the most intricate system ever. A great weight loss workout should include smart progressions and regressions so that you can train with enough intensity to get results. This means progression on movement patterns your body can handle but regression on exercises that expose your weaknesses. Check out the workout video here to see how easy this is to do.
3. Boost Vitality Not Deplete You - Have you noticed that the hardcore workout mentality is still going strong? It's hard not to want to join these hardcore workout cults but the truth is you don't need to "kill it" or "show up and throw up" or "feel the pain or no gain" to get results. An effective weight loss workout that gets results should not deplete you. It should be challenging but should also improve your body not harm it. Try to remember that exercise is a type of stress that you are imposing on your body in order to increase fitness levels as well as health. There is good stress also known as eustress and bad stress also known as distress and you don't need the later to lose weight and fat. In fact distressing your system will only get the opposite result.

Drugs like Hydroxycut and Xenadrine that advertise rapid weight loss contain caffeine, which can be addictive, and some products labeled "holistic" contain guarana, a substance that mimics the effects of caffeine and can be harmful to the body. Other side effects of these diet pills include rapid heart beat, agitation, sleep disturbances, hair loss and headaches.
Pharmacist Paul Flatley said these products can be abused by kids looking for fast results.
"We're talking about a drug that has an abuse potential because if they're starting to see results, they might want results quicker... the logic of this is that 'If I take more of this, I might see a quicker onset of my weight loss,'" pharmacist Paul Flatley said.
As kids grow older, the issue of dieting follows, and using these products can become costly -- Americans spend more than $40 billion on diet-related products each year.

Fat pets a weighty issue
After years of feasting on char siew and abalone, Ah Mao weighs nearly 11kg - more than double his ideal weight.
Ah Mao is accounts officer Lin Miaohui's 11-year-old pet cat. Dry cat food and tuna alone do not satisfy the local short-haired tabby. He meows pitifully when his human housemates sit down to a meal, pawing at their legs for scraps, and turns up the intensity of his 'Puss-In-Boots gaze', says Lin, 29.
Veterenarians and pet experts interviewed say that, with growing affluence, pet owners are over-feeding their dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits and even turtles.
Ricky Yeo, a dog behaviour expert who runs The Dog Listener Consultancy here, has observed a 20 to 30 per cent increase in the number of overweight dogs at dog-related events in the past three years.
Says Yeo, who is also the president of animal welfare organisation Action For Singapore Dogs: "With increasing affluence, dog owners are treating their pets like children. Dogs are pampered with excessive food and treats. And with owners' busy schedules, these dogs do not get adequate exercise and become obese."
Like overweight humans, obese pets have a higher risk of getting diabetes mellitus, lower urinary tract disease, joint disease and osteoarthritis. They are also more prone to fatty liver, decreased stamina and non-allergic skin conditions - due to the inability to groom efficiently - says Dr Cathy Chan, a veterinarian at The Animal Doctors.
These factors are why obesity can shorten a pet's lifespan.
Dr Hsu Li Chieh from The Animal Clinic warns that a fat dog is less able to regulate its body heat, causing it to suffer more in Singapore's hot climate.
For these reasons, dog-owner Christina Lim wants to help her eight-year-old shih tzu lose weight.
Mango, who weighs 11kg, is slightly bow-legged - a condition that predisposes her to joint problems and can be exacerbated by her weight. Her ideal weight is between 4.5kg and 7.3kg.

Jessica Simpson denies pressure from Weight Watchers
Jessica Simpson has denied claims that Weight Watchers is pressuring her to lose her baby weight quickly.
Simpson, who welcomed her first child on May 1, reportedly signed a multi-million dollar deal with Weight Watchers to be the weight loss program's newest spokesmodel. She has been spotted several times over the past month working out with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, but denies that she is being pushed to drop the pounds.
The new mom Tweeted on June 27, "Just so everyone knows...Weight Watchers hasn't put ANY pressure on me! I'm trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great!"
Simpson announced on May 30 that she would be the newest spokes model for the Weight Watchers weight loss program. She Tweeted, "So excited to be a part of the @WeightWatchers family!"
The 31-year-old singer and her fiance Eric Johnson welcomed their daughter Maxwell Drew on May 1 and she told the magazine that "life has completely changed."
She posted a busty photo of herself walking with Maxwell in a stroller on Twitter on June 22.
Simpson was rudely mocked for putting on too much weight during her pregnancy and in April, slammed tabloid reports that said she had already welcomed her child.
