Carol Radull opens up on tough times that saw her lose Dad and brother – Pulse Live Kenya
Sports journalist and Media Personality Carol Radull has opened up on the difficult times she went through after losing her brother to Hodgkin's disease, a type of blood cancer and her dad to Prostate cancer.
Speaking to Betty Kyallo on Weekend with Betty, Carol revealed that they had moved from Botswana to Kenya when his younger brother who was fifteen years old was diagnosed with the disease. Her father had moved from Angola after a war broke out there and they were trying to settle down in Kenya.
She went on to disclose that the financial strain made them almost go broke and drained them as a family. It was a hard time for her because her brother died seven months later when she was in form four and it affected her immensely.
It was hard we were teens he was 14, i was 15, it was seven months from the time he was diagnosed to the time he passed away. So by the time you are breathing to think how we gonna deal with it, its over So you are like no one dies in my family, and I was in form four by the time he died and it messed up my education. It was hard. And then my mum took it hard the hardest because she is the one who had to stay up with him at night ,hes throwing up hes not eating he lost weight he was already a slim child, he lost his weight lost his hair you know all these things that happen when you have cancer" Said Carol.
Losing dad to Prostate Cancer
Ms Radull further revealed that she lost her dad to Prostate cancer years later after he battled with it for ten years.
"His was slightly better in that it was caught early he got the surgery, the radio therapy made us all broke again. Oh I have friends who came through for me even Radio Africa came through for me, they said any money the staff raise, the company doubles, so the company matched." added the radio presenter.
Losing her close family members made her get involved in Charity Organisations including one dubbed Hope for Cancer kids.
Losing the other brother
The Kiss FM radio Presenter, confessed that her mother and sister were close because they were the only family she had left after her other brother was stabbed by a thug and died.
I Lost my brother about 20 years ago, he got stabbed in some thug fight, some thug stabbed him punctured his spleen, he had surgery, it was in 1998, 22 years ago" revealed Carol.
Radio Career
Ms Radull revealed that she has been on Radio for more than 20 years, worked for BBC, Reuters, and also Mohammed Amin. Her Journey began as Business Journalist on the print desk covering stock market as well as Hard news.
Her love for sports developed when she was in school because she played almost every sport.
Dating life
After separating ways with her ex husband, Caroll revealed that she was dating but could not tell if she was going to be married again because the man had not asked for her hand in marriage yet. She disclosed that she had learned a lot from her previous marriage stating that after divorce one doesn't jump easily into marriage again.
I am dating not that its anybodys business and no Im not dating that guy who wanted us to share my salary, I asked him to go find somebody else. I can share my salary with the right person. I think all those women who believe its a mans role to don everything financially in the house, for me thats nonsense, in this day and age we both work, we have to help each other"

New Drugs Approved for Liver Cancer Treatment – Med News 365
The results of a new study indicate that some heartburn medications may cause the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. The information comes from 12 prior studies.
According to researchers, data from various studies show that people who take medications to suppress acid, most commonly proton pump inhibitors or PPIs have a greater chance of having antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their systems. The studies dont show that the PPIs cause the issue, but they can contribute. PPIs include well-known medications, such as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid.
This is the latest information to raise concerns about PPIs. In the past, they were linked to other health issues, including stomach cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, deficiencies in magnesium, calcium and B12 and other infections. However, doctors believe they are generally safe to take for the short-term. Safety concerns arise when they have been prescribed for longer than necessary.
Researchers say that heartburn drugs available over the counter add to the problem because people can take them for as long and as often as they want. PPIs do their job by blocking the enzyme that creates acid in the stomach. They are most often used with GERD, which is gastroesophageal reflux disease. With this condition, the acid moves into the esophagus.
Research shows that some doctors prescribe them for other complaints as well, which take care of the problem. However, the issue might have gone away on its own without the need for PPIs. Another issue is that when a person stops the medication, it can cause a rebound effect, starting up the acid reflux again. The patient then assumes they need to continue taking the medication.
The researchers combined the total results from 12 studies and looked at the data. Participants in the studies took both PPIs and H2 blockers, which include such drugs as Pepcid, Zantac and Tagamet. The results of the review showed that participants had a 74 percent more likelihood of having antibiotic-resistant bacteria than those who didnt take the medications. From the information, the increased risk was limited to PPIs and didnt include the H2 blockers.
The review didnt look at whether the bacteria carried any health issues or if the participants had the same level of exposure to antibiotics. Resistance to antibiotics typically is caused by use, especially continued use over the long-term. The study did indicate that the risk was higher with patients who used the PPIs in the hospital than with those who used them every day.
While the review leaves a lot of questions unanswered, researchers believe it shows the need to be careful when prescribing PPIs to patients. When used in appropriate situations, they believe the benefits still outweigh the risks. However, long-term use should be considered carefully, especially for those who seek the relief from OTC products. As always, its important to talk to a doctor about any health issues that dont go away in a reasonable amount of time rather than continuing treatment on your own.

‘My 600-lb Life’: After suffering a heart attack, Coliesa’s weight-loss surgery hangs by a thin thread – MEAWW
Coliesa McMillian's weight has been a problem for her since a very young age and her mental health did not make it easy for her to take control over what she ate. She revealed that it all started with an alcoholic father who did not care enough for her. This was followed by an abusive husband, whom she managed to escape only after he was arrested.
To make things worse, when Coliesa thought that she had finally found a person who would love and care for her, she lost him in a car accident. With a series of events piled up one after the other that drains Coliesa out, it was no surprise that she turned to food for comfort. However, she knew that she could not continue living like this.
She made it clear that she wanted to lose weight and work hard on herself for the sake of her daughters. A mother of four, Coliesa knew that she had a lot of responsibilities up her sleeves but she was unable to take these because of her weight. After careful consideration, Coliesa finally decided to meet Dr Younan Nowzaradan.
Even though she found it hard to make it to Houston, she finally made it. When Coliesa first weighed herself, she was at 643 lbs. She was shocked and upset to look at her weight but she was happy as she realized that it could have been worse. She then met Dr Nowzaradan who questioned her about her food habits.
He then found out that Coliesa had a previous heart condition that dimmed the chances of her getting a surgery. He wanted to know what health problems she had in order to ensure that after she lost the weight, she would be able to undergo the surgery as well.
However, he wanted to first see if Coliesa was fully committed to losing the weight. He advised her to lose 50 lbs in a month and then come back for another consultation. He also gave her a diet chart and a series of exercises to do. For the first month, Coliesa worked hard to control her eating urges. She stated that she had reduced her food intake to three meals a day.
Meanwhile, she also started working out. However, she revealed that she was still having difficulties walking and refrained from continuing it. Finally, the day had come when she had to meet Dr Nowzaradan again. This time, she weighed 616lbs and had lost 27lbs. Coliesa was disappointed as she thought she would have lost more than that.
She told Dr Nowzaradan that she had been working hard and following the diet chart that he had given. However, Dr Nowzaradan did not agree. He told her that she would have lost more weight had she had been following the diet properly. Coliesa broke down crying as she felt that all her efforts were being futile.
Dr Nowzaradan asked her to work harder and not give up. Speaking to the camera, he stated that Coliesa was trying to manipulate herself and him by crying and it was important for her to work on herself. After her meeting with Dr Nowzaradan, Coliesa moved to Houston as she was focused on losing more weight.
Despite this, she was second-guessing her actions as she was worried that she was leaving everything behind and making a big move. Luckily, her youngest daughter motivated her to take the step and work on herself. Once Coliesa moved to Houston, she tried working hard in the same way. For her third consultation, she was advised to lose 50 lbs more.
However, this time, she weighed 591lbs and had lost 25lbs. Coliesa felt disappointed. Dr Nowzaradan suggested that she should meet a therapist and talk about what she had been feeling. Coliesa agreed and though the therapy made her better, her struggle was not over. A couple of days after the surgery, Coliesa started experiencing sharp abdominal pains.
She decided to go meet Dr Nowzaradan and revealed that she hadn't used the restroom for a couple of days. Dr Nowzaradan knew that he had to be treated immediately and admitted her in the hospital, which automatically brought her weight-loss journey to a halt.
After looking at her reports, Dr Nowzaradan realized that she might need surgery because she had a blockage but it was difficult for her to undergo surgery because of her health issues. He was concerned that her life could be put in danger if he did go ahead with the surgery. He further revealed that her weight loss was not like he had expected.
He advised Coliesa to watch her diet and try to stick to the chart. She said she was trying her best and hadn't had a lot of food like she usually does. However, Dr Nowzaradan warned her that her life would be in danger if she continued to eat like the way she did. He also gave her medications to help with her heart problems.
Coliesa agreed, but felt like Dr Nowzaradan was not seeing the efforts she was putting in. Despite this, she had hope that her life could be better once she lost weight. This motivated her to push herself again. Luckily for her, after a couple of days, Coliesa got the news that she was approved for the weight-loss surgery because her heart was strong enough.
She felt emotional and scared but knew that she was ready. Fortunately, the surgery was successful and Coliesa was advised to stay on a liquid diet for some time. A month after her weight-loss surgery, Coliesa confessed that she felt different and was doing everything on point ever since she returned from the hospital.
She further revealed that she has started taking walks outside and pushes herself as much as she can. For the first time, Coliesa was excited to meet Dr Nowzaradan. When she arrived at the hospital she realized that she had lost 25lbs and now weighed 499lbs. This was the first time she was below 500lbs and felt pleased with the efforts she had put.
Dr Nowzaradan asked her to continue her therapy while also working hard to lose weight. She promised to keep working hard and to make him proud. Coliesa confessed that she was feeling emotional and added that she was grateful it happened. Calling Dr Nowzaradan her angel, Coliesa was now ready to work harder than ever.

It is possible to have high cholesterol levels in the blood even though you are thin. It is true that obesity is associated with high cholesterol levels, but it is not the only factor. Other risk factors include eating diets that have a lot of starch and refined sugars, lack of exercise, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and diabetes. There are also some people who have an inherited disease that interferes with how the body deals with cholesterol, leading to very high blood cholesterol levels.High cholesterol levels are dangerous because they form deposits, called plaques, on the walls of the blood vessels. These deposits can then cause narrowing of the blood vessels and weakening of their walls, leading to stroke, kidney failure, heart disease and heart attacks, and even blindness. This happens because of reduced or blocked blood flow to organs such as the brain, the kidneys, the heart and the retina.There are two kinds of cholesterol: the good HDL cholesterol and the bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The target is to have more of the good type and less of the bad type. To avoid having high levels of bad cholesterol, reduce on the amount of starch you take, especially refined types; eat whole grains, oatmeal, whole wheat bread and pasta, and brown rice; eat more vegetables and fruits, and other high fibre foods; eat fish, seeds and nuts; and use unsaturated fats (like olive oil, sunflower oil, corn oil); reduce on eggs, whole milk and red meat. Also, exercise regularly for the sake of being healthy and not necessarily to lose weight. You can also be given medicine to reduce the cholesterol levels if the above measures do not work within a few months.

This is usually in the genetic make-up of a person, which means it can be passed from parents to children and it cannot be eradicated. It causes allergy conditions like allergic rhinitis, allergic skin rashes, allergic cough, recurrent itching of the eyes (allergic conjunctivitis) and asthma. Someone may have one or a combination of several of them. The condition cannot be cured, but it can be controlled by avoiding the triggers like cold, dust, strong smell, pollen and smoke and also by taking anti-allergy medicines. Tongan prop Ben Tameifuna has revealed an incredible weight loss in a video just months after was told he couldnt play for a French club because he was too overweight!
Racing 92 had ordered Ben Tameifunato lose weight with the club unhappy with theTongainternationals condition following his return from the Rugby World Cup.
The Tongan prop was seriously overweight going into the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

According to reports in France, Tameifuna tipped the scales at 160kg when he reported back to the Top14 club.
It is not the first time Racing have been unhappy with the 28-year-olds weight.
The former Chiefs player was reportedly at 140kg when he left for the tournament but has packed on the beef despite playing and training in France over the past month.
The 28-year-old Tameifuna, the heaviest player at the tournament, is no stranger to weight issues with the latest reports bringing a reminder of Big Ben returning from a summer vacation last year weighing 166kg.
In 2018, Tameifuna returned for pre-season weighting 166kg.
An incredible video shows just how much weight the prop has now lost and it looks like he has lost around 20kg just by looking at his waistline!
Much in the past have been made of Props and their distinct lack of athleticism in some cases. Researchers say the diet plan can change proteins in the liver to keep consumers healthy

Photo (c) StephanieFrey - Getty ImagesIntermittent fasting has recently gained traction for its ability to help consumers lose weight and achieve a healthier lifestyle, but a new study shows that it can also promote good liver health.
Australian researchers at the University of Sydney say that the diet can positively impact fat metabolism in the liver, which can help prevent various liver diseases and conditions. Specifically, they found that a certain protein called HNF4-(alpha) was suppressed when an intermittent fasting plan was followed.
"For the first time we showed that HNF4-(alpha) is inhibited during intermittent fasting. This has downstream consequences, such as lowering the abundance of blood proteins in inflammation or affecting bile synthesis. This helps explain some of the previously known facts about intermittent fasting," said researcher Dr. Mark Larance.
The researchers came to their conclusions after analyzing how the HNF4-(alpha) protein was affected by intermittent fasting in mice. The protein is generally responsible for regulating a wide array of liver genes.
The team found that both intermittent fasting and every-other-day-fasting (in which consumers only consume food on an alternating daily schedule) changed how HNF4-(alpha) interacted with the metabolism of fatty acids in the liver. The observations of this interaction and others could allow for medical professionals to develop approaches that could help manage glucose and regulate diseases like diabetes.
"We know that fasting can be an effective intervention to treat disease and improve liver health. But we haven't known how fasting reprograms liver proteins, which perform a diverse array of essential metabolic functions," explained Larance. "By studying the impact on proteins in the livers of mice...we now have a much better understanding of how this happens."
The full study has been published in the journal Cell Reports.

At 39, Emily Barclay was hit with irregular periods, crushing fatigue and mood swings. It took four years before she was diagnosed with perimenopause - a phase that can last for 10 years before the menopause itself, with similar debilitating symptoms.
"Everything was just wrong."
That's how Emily felt when she started gaining weight, feeling exhausted all the time and "totally out of control".
She couldn't understand it - she was fit, healthy and training six times a week for long-distance triathlons. But within three months, she went from preparing for Ironman events to "needing a snooze every single day".
The personal trainer went to the doctor several times over the following four years and was repeatedly given conflicting advice.
"I just wasn't getting any answers. I was told I was stressed, that they needed to change what [contraceptive] I'm on, I needed to exercise more, I needed to lose weight."
Emily says not knowing what was wrong with her was "scary" and that every couple of months, she would have "episodes" where she didn't feel like herself.
"I didn't understand what was happening and I was really scared about why I wasn't me any more," she says.
"I had episodes of just being psycho... It wasn't just being a bit ratty but proper angry and I would keep going back for arguments. Then afterwards, I would feel totally wiped out.
"It was terrifying, as I felt totally out of control. It's like you've been body-snatched and you're watching another person."
Emily had "endless" hormone tests that all came back normal. She ended up conducting her own research and told the doctor she thought she either had chronic fatigue syndrome or perimenopause.
Together, they identified that her symptoms seemed to run in conjunction with her menstrual cycle and at 42, she was finally diagnosed with perimenopause - a phase that can last up to 10 years and cause hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings, similar to the menopause.
"I didn't know perimenopause even existed [but] I felt such a relief because I now knew what was going on," she says.
"I didn't know there was this transition, I just thought you toddled along happily and one day you had a few hot flushes, your periods finished and you were done."
For most women in the UK, the average age of reaching the menopause is 51, but decreasing levels of oestrogen can cause perimenopausal symptoms.
Emily struggled at first with the impact of the condition. She had been used to training for 12 to 15 hours a week through swimming, cycling and running, but felt too tired to exercise - something that had brought her social benefits as well as fitness.
Many of her friends were from the Norwich-based triathlon club Tri-Anglia and the Bungay Black Dog running club, so she saw them less frequently.
She also didn't finish the 2017 Outlaw Half Holkham - an event consisting of a 1.2-mile (1,900m) swim, 56-mile (90km) bike and 13.1-mile (21km) run - due to her symptoms and she pulled out of Ironman Vichy in France as the distances were double and she felt "there was simply no point" going.
"A huge part of [training] was socialising and catching up with people; I would run with one of my friends which was an opportunity to chat and I would do long runs with my dogs," she says.
"I felt lost not being able to do that."

The 43-year-old decided not to take medication and instead adapted her lifestyle to "allow for fatigue". Cardiovascular exercise still "wipes me out for days" so instead she has taken up power-lifting.
"Now I know what it is, I feel happy to ride it out," she says. "I don't take PT clients in the evening any longer, I allow time for naps, I make sure I get early nights when I need to."
She has also channelled the years she spent trying to get answers into an online support service called Perimenopause Hub, where women with the condition all over the world can find out more about symptoms and get support.
It has a Facebook group with more than 1,200 members and experts on hand to give advice. Emily, who says the project has "grown and grown", will also be hosting a three-day online summit on 20-22 March.
"The feedback has been phenomenal. People have been in contact and said they feel they are 'no longer alone', 'I'm not different', 'I'm not the only one going through this'," she says.
"It's been lovely creating this community. It's like I've given permission to people to talk about it and that's really cool."
