One of the most surprising things about getting older is not the emerging wrinkles, nor the stiff back upon rising in the morning. Its not the realisation that I have turned into my mother, nor that I think most young peoples music is nothing but noise. No. One of the most surprising things about getting older for me, as a woman, is this: its that I actually enjoy exercise.
As a child at school, I learnt that exercise was a sort of state-sanctioned punishment. Through the brutal humiliation of never being picked for the netball or lacrosse team, I understood that you should not bother doing exercise unless you excelled at it, which, now I come to think about it, is like telling someone they shouldnt cook unless they happen to have a Michelin star.
Then, as a teenager and 20-something, I discovered that exercise was a necessary evil if you wanted to lose weight or stay trim. A moment on the lips meant a lifetime on the hips. Unless, of course, I worked out, in which case I could treat myself to a bite or two of chocolate.
It was only in my 30s, when I found myself running as a means to escape my own head (running away from myself, in a way), did I realise that I could enjoy exercise. That when it was something you did for your mental health rather than your physical health, it could, in fact, be really rather glorious indeed.
The revelation was life-changing. Suddenly, exercise was not about the losses the inches on my hips, the pounds on the scale but the gains: the endorphins, the mental clarity, the time to myself.

TOWIE star Amy Childs has revealed the secret behind how she lost two stone in six months.
The Celebs Go Dating babe, 29, took part in 20-minute home work outs t get back into her size 10 jeans and hired a personal trainer after finding it hard to shift her "mum tum" after giving birth to her second child in 2018.
Chatting to The Sun's TV Mag, the former TOWIE star said: "I had a PT for six months and she used to give me little workouts and we did a thing together called MumFit.
"Its targeted at mums who want to lose weight and get their body back and having two kids I know what it does to your body.
"Being a full-time mum trying to go to the gym is so hard so I like to do workouts at home, and with MumFit you can actually do the workouts in your own home.
"So even with the kids running around you can get a workout in.
"I lost two stone in 6 months just by doing my MumFit and eating healthy, and that wasnt even going to the gym."
Amy explained that she was doing burpees in her living room and also HIIT workouts or 20 minutes to get back into her size 10 jeans.
The TV personality admitted that her weight gain knocked her confidence and she slipped into a downward spiral as a single mum of two.
She's now found her mojo and is looking for love on E4 dating show Celebs Go Dating.
"I've definitely worried I wouldn't meet the one a a single mum of two young kids," she said.
"It does make it more difficult to find someone beau now it's all about the kids. They're my priority and now I have to find someone who loves me and my children.
"I lost myself last year, but sitting indoors every day with the kids, I started feeling rubbish in myself and struggled with my weight."
Fingers crossed Amy finds her Mr Right with the help of the celebrity dating agency.
Fellow TOWIE star James Locke, EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney and Love Island babe Amy Hart are jut a few names also looking to find love with the help of love gurus Paul Carrick Brunson and Ana Williamson.

New Forest ponies lose weight amid wet weather – New Milton Advertiser and Lymington Times

DOZENS of ponies have been removed from the New Forest after persistent wet weather caused them to lose too much weight.
The animals, which are all owned by commoners, will be kept in holdings and given supplementary food until the weather improves and spring grass begins to grow.
Head agister Jonathan Gerrelli confirmed that a higher-than-usual number of animals had lost condition this winter, forcing their removal from the national park.
He said: We have removed quite a significant number of ponies this winter. It has certainly been the worst year for a few years.
Every year the agisters remove a number of ponies from the Forest during the winter months if they are deemed to have lost too much weight.
Mr Gerrelli explained: The ponies are semi-feral so it is quite normal for them to fatten up in the summer and autumn months and then lose some of that weight during the winter.
But this year with the extremely wet weather it has been pretty tough out there.
We monitor their condition continuously and if we feel that they have lost too much weight we ask for them to be removed to a holding where they will be given supplementary food until their condition has improved.
Mr Gerrelli explained that with extra food the ponies put on weight quickly, usually returned to the Forest in around eight weeks.
He added: If anyone sees an animal they are concerned about they can always report it to the verderers office within working hours or call the Forestry England 24-hour hotline and the agisters will go out and take a look.
We just need some sunshine now to dry out the ground. Once the spring grass begins to come through, the animals will put on condition very quickly.

AMY Childs has revealed how she lost two stone in six months with 20-minute home workouts to get back into her size 10 jeans.

In a frank chat to The Sun Online this week, Amy admitted a string of failed relationships shattered her confidence and made her believe she'll never find a husband.
But after getting herself back in shape, the former Towie star signed up to E4's Celebs Go Dating.
She's now got her confidence back and believes she'll meet The One.

Perth woman Sophie Smith reveals how obsession with being healthy ruined her life – 7NEWS.com.au
A student has described how an obsessive healthy eating disorder known as orthorexia nearly ruined her life and warned that is it dangerously common.
Sophie Smith, 21, from Perth in Western Australia, recalled how her obsession with size began when was just 15, after she was weighed as part of a biannual fitness test in her physical education class in high school.
Feeling less confident as her weight was slightly higher than the other girls, British born Sophie who moved to Australia when she was 10 - said she began actively researching ways to lose weight and eat healthy.
The science and arts student said over the next few years she soon spiralled into a dangerous obsession with food and exercise and said that the stress and pressure of trying to be 100 per cent healthy all the time turned her into not a very nice person.
The young woman said it got to the point where her mood would determine on how much she weighed each morning while she also weighed most of her foods and tracked every single calorie.
She never ate any type of bad foods and even forced herself to work out every single morning, even when sick.
Sophie added that she became scared and anxious going on family holidays, and never enjoyed celebrating Christmas or birthdays, because she was so worried about gaining weight.

And as she always avoided going to social events due to having no control over the food, it was difficult for her to form and maintain solid friendships or have any type of social life.
She said: Growing up, I always felt good about myself and had a positive relationship with food.
My obsession with being healthy started when I was about 15. I went to an all-girls private school and part of our fitness class was to be weighed.
I was scared of knowing the number on the scale during the fitness test and I knew everyone was probably comparing their weights. I felt alone, like I was the only girl gaining weight.
I was scared to go on family holidays because I wouldnt have control of the food or exercise.
Thats when I decided to start doing things about my weight. Id look up top tips about how to avoid getting fat and I made up a list of all these foods that were bad for me.
Id weigh myself every day and none of my family ever knew. It was very compulsive, and my mood depended on how much I weighed that day.
I told myself to get down to a certain weight. I wanted to be the lowest range of healthy as I could be on the BMI scale.
Id be very strict in following all the rules. Id have to exercise everyday even if I was sick.
Sophie said she would not go to social events and rearrange plan to avoid meeting at cafes and restaurants.
I was scared to go on family holidays because I wouldnt have control of the food or exercise. Id terrified the whole time that Id gain all this weight, she said.
It was really damaging to my life, but I just couldnt see it at the time.
At 16, Sophie was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis - inflammatory bowel disease - which she believes could have stemmed from her eating disorder and the amount of stress and pressure she put on herself to be healthy.
I think more people have orthorexia than they realise.
Although she never got down to a dangerously unhealthy weight, she said she did lose around 20 per cent of her body weight while going through her struggles with orthorexia.

But when that stats negatively impacting your mental health and life, thats when it becomes dangerous.
It was not until a family holiday to Melbourne in September 2017 with her mum Clare and identical twin sister Eloise that she realised how much her obsession with being healthy impacted her life.
Instead of enjoying her holiday, Sophie said she was constantly anxious that she was not getting enough exercise and was stressed that she could not eat her usual healthy diet.
The turning point was when I realised things were getting out of control and I wasnt enjoying myself anymore, she said.
What should have been great family holidays became sources of stress and anxiety. I could never enjoy myself or fully let go and be in the moment.
I just felt so much guilt and shame all the time. If I ate one tiny chocolate, Id feel bad all day.
Over the next two years, Sophie saw a psychologist and a dietitian to help overcome her eating disorder and to restore a healthy relationship with food.
She also began taking care of her mental health by unfollowing toxic diet culture accounts on social media and focused on body positivity.
Sophie said she feels she has recovered from orthorexia and no longer feels obsessed with healthy eating but instead, allows herself to eat whatever she feels like and do exercise she enjoys, while also taking rest days.
Now the inspirational young woman is raising awareness about this relatively unknown eating disorder, as she believes it is far more common than what people realise.
My life is so much better now. Im not weighed down by any mental baggage and I feel free and happy, she said.

AN OBESE mum shamed into dieting because she was too fat to be pushed in a wheelchair has won a top slimming award - despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Mother-of-two Natasha Bunby, 38, lost more than half of her bodyweight in just 18 months and has kept it off for seven years, earning her a new career as a model.
Natasha had ballooned to more than 21 stone after she began comfort eating following the death of her best friend as a teenager.
But she finally decided to slim after being diagnosed with the movement-restricting disorder.
She told how she was diagnosed with MS after waking up without feeling in her lower body.
Natasha, who lives in Lancing with her husband Marc, said: Id had problems with my legs since my teens, but doctors put it down to the trauma of losing my friend.
Some years later, I woke up one night and lost all function and feeling from the waist down.
I was taken to hospital and diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and hospitalised for six weeks.
Natasha realised she had to lose weight during an embarrassing hospital visit from her mum.
Recalling the experience, she said: My mum took me in my wheelchair to a park at the side of the hospital with my two children.
There was a slope that led down to the park and my mum lost control of the wheelchair.
She added: I ended up stuck in a bush - and because I was too heavy for my mum to manoeuvre the chair - she had to ask a passer-by for help.
The shame continued when Natashas eldest son, Deon, asked her how they would ever go out as a family if she was too heavy to be pushed in a wheelchair.
She said: It broke my heart.
I knew I had to do something about my weight as I wanted to do all I could to help myself with my health.
In March 2011 Natasha received a Slimming World leaflet through her door and decided to join her local group.
She said: At the time I was a size 28 and spent most of the time just wanting to hide.
However, I knew deep down that I also wanted to do something for myself and take back some control.
Natasha fell in love with the Slimming Worlds Food Optimising method because it meant she could enjoy the same roast dinners, curries and burgers she ate before.
Natashas weight had plummeted from 21st 7lbs to 10st 6lbs within 18 months. She has managed to keep the weight off for more than seven years by staying active, despite her condition which limits her movement.

Couple Who Helped Famous Tubby Tabby Slim Down Have Adopted Another Viral Fat Cat – HuffPost
A hefty D.C.-area cat who went viral over his adorable face and very fluffy appearance has landed a new home.
Wilford, an 8-year-old gray and white cat, rocketed to fame in early February when DCist published a story about the husky hunk looking for a home. Now Wilford has found that home, and it couldnt be more purrrrfect.

Kiah Berkeley and Peter Sorkin are the couple who adopted Symba the tubby tabby, an orange cat who made headlines in 2017 after winding up at D.C.s Humane Rescue Alliance weighing a whopping 35 pounds. The couple renamed him Vito and were helping him gradually lose weight. Unfortunately, Vito died in January after fluid was found in his abdomen, and was mourned by not only his owners but thousands of online fans. But the couple announced some happier news on Vitos Facebook page last week.
While no cat will ever replace Vito we still miss him every day we do know we can give a loving and healthy home to Wilford, DCs latest chonky celebrity, read the announcement on Vitos Facebook page, now titled Symba the tubby tabby and Wilford, too.
We had recently lost our beloved Vito and were looking to fill the fat-cat-sized hole in our hearts, Kiah said to HuffPost in an email. Wilford, of course, does not replace Vito and Vito will always be my best boy but obviously Wilford is a spectacular cat and we didnt want to pass up the opportunity.
And she told DCist that she and her husband have experience in slimming a morbidly obese cat down.
Wilfords former foster parents, Jen and Ian, are thrilled. Jen, who prefers not to have her last name published for privacy reasons, told HuffPost that Wilford had wound up at a local animal shelter in December, when his former owner was unable to continue to care for him. From there, he went to Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation, a nonprofit where Jen volunteers. Wilford was one in a long line of felines that Jen and Ian, who share their fostering adventures on theInstagram account @pokeypotpie, have taken in while the cats are in the process of finding forever homes.
Pokey Pot PieThings are looking up for Wilford, who has just landed a forever home after being surrendered to a shelter in December by someone who was no longer able to care for him.
Wilfords sudden fame meant a massive number of adoption inquiries rolling in. After narrowing the field to local applicants since Wilfords weight-related health issues make it hard for him to travel far his foster parents focused on ensuring potential adopters were prepared for his needs.
We reached out to people and let them know that, yes, Wilford is absolutely adorable, the cutest thing in the world, totally huggable but he is a cat with special care he needs to get on a daily basis to keep him healthy, keep him happy and keep him clean, Jen said.
Wilford has a lovable and loving demeanor that makes his grumpy old man face even cuter, she said. But he needed a family that would be committed to helping him lose weight in a healthy matter he was 28 pounds when he was first surrendered to the shelter, and now has a goal weight of around 14 pounds. He also needed someone who would keep up with his asthma treatment and help him get clean after using the litter box, since his size prevents him from grooming himself effectively.

Unlike a lot of cats, Wilford actually enjoys baths (As long as you pet him and scratch his neck and back while youre soaping him up, Jen told DCist) but nevertheless, regular poop-cleanings were a dealbreaker for some potential adopters.
But Kiah and Peter had it in the bag.
Theyd gone through that with Vito, they understood the cleaning needs, the grooming needs, Jen said.
Wilford is settling in nicely, according to Kiah, who added that he is currently residing primarily in the guest bedroom while they undergo the gradual process of introducing him to the households other two resident cats.
Photos from Wednesday show him lolling on his back, contentedly tucked into bed.
Jen and Ian noted they hope that those moved by Wilfords story will be inspired to take action to help animals in similar situations who might not be as famous.
Hes gotten the benefit of being super adorable, photogenic and having a good PR system to help him get the attention he wants, Jen said. But there are absolutely Wilfords in just about every shelter and rescue around the U.S. ... Maybe their Wilford isnt an obese grandpa cat, but a three-legged cat ... or the brown tabby whos been there for a year.
Ian chimed in to advise people to look for the cats that slipped through the cracks.
Jen added, Wilfords not slipping through any cracks.

Cameras have been allowed into Britains leading Childhood Obesity Clinic where more than 80 kids a week struggle to shed the pounds.
Footage will highlight how Tommy, a 14-year-old weighing 23 stone, and Harry, a 15-year-old weighing 18 stone are amongst Britains most extreme cases, who struggling to lose weight.
But experts insist the obesity crisis could be improved if home lives were improved for some children, MirrorOnline reveals .
Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield, clinical lead in paediatric weight management says: "The health problems are absolutely huge. If you dont address it whilst youre a child. By the time youre an adolescent its almost getting too late.
"Ive seen children with BMIs of 65-67 and because overweight and obesity has become so prevalent in the country, then people have stopped recognising it as being different.
"Eighty five percent of parents dont recognise their child is overweight and the ultimate responsibility for the care of that child lies with their parents."
A body mass index(BMI) of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight for most adults and anything over 30 is considered obese with a normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.
Speaking on the Channel 4 show, 100 Kilo Kids, paediatric obesity nurse specialist Melanie Wenn also urges families to take action themselves.

She says: "Ive seen children out of breath by the time theyve walked from the waiting room into the clinic room. You have to address that.
"If we dont reverse it now we will be failing these children."
In the revealing documentary filmed Bristol Royals Hospital for Children, Tommy, 14, has had 18 months of treatment at the clinic but is 23 stone at the start of the documentary and says his life consists around playing computer games on his bed.
"Crisps, cake, yogurts, ice cream, bit of everything really," he says of his diet.
He adds: "PS4 is my drug, I just sit here play that and go to sleep. Eat, sleep, game, repeat yknow."
He eats around 4,000 calories a day before the obesity clinic intervenes and brings him into stay in the hospital for a week. His mum Esther says at one point: "I cant watch this anymore. I am grieving for a child that is still sat here."
Harry, 15, sees his weight rise to begin with despite working with the clinic. He was initially brought in after his hip collapsed in part due to his weight.
The documentary also features a five-year-old Lilianna who weighs seven stone - double what she should for her age - and has taken to stealing food from her fridge at home.
However after doctors run tests they find out her obesity is due to gene defect which works in your brain and affects your appetite. The documentary ends with Professor Hamilton-Shield saying: "You have to work through the parents - they are the ones that need to be the effectors of change.
They are the ones that need to do it."
