Losing weight safely | Health Information | Bupa UK

Start by thinking about what you want to gain from losing weight and if you feel ready. Losing weight isn't easy. You need to be ready to sign up to the challenge and get through some potentially tough times to achieve your goal. What works for you might be very different for someone else but below are some ideas to think about that may help keep you motivated.

If you have tried to lose weight in the past and it didn't go too well, try and identify what went wrong. Then think about how you can change things this time. Were there any triggers that made you eat more? Decide upfront how you're going to tackle these. Or you might identify that you need more support, or to build more exercise into your life to help keep the weight off.

Think about what really motivates you and how you can use this to stick to your weight-loss plan. It might help to write down your weight-loss goal and put it on the fridge as a constant reminder. Or you might be more motivated by the thought of being able to fit in those old jeans that are currently too tight. Try to pin down what motivates you and use this in your weight-loss plan.

Make sure you build some rewards into your plan if you achieve your goals, or to help you keep going if you're struggling. As well as giving yourself a pat on the back for losing weight, celebrate when you've conquered bad habits too. But don't reward yourself with food! Think about other things such as a spa treatment or trip to a sports event. Get a list together before you start it might be that extra motivation you need.

While it's great to be determined to achieve your goals, don't be too hard on yourself if you slip up once in a while. With all the willpower in the world, life can still throw up some serious temptations to knock you off course. Accept that this will happen and that its not the end of the world or your diet. Get straight back on track and dont let the slip-up make you lose sight of the progress you're making. Hopefully, you'll learn from it and can lessen the chances of it happening again.

Though it may sound easier said than done, if you want to lose weight you can do it just go for it!

Another element of losing weight is to change certain behaviours. Many of us have an array of deep-seated bad habits. Examples are anything from always eating something sweet after meals to having our local take-away on speed dial for after a bad day. A lot of this can revolve around comfort or 'emotional' eating, so it's important to take steps to recognise this. Pay more attention to what you're eating, when and why youre eating it.

Some people find it helps to practise mindfulness meditation to combat emotional eating. This is a technique whereby you train yourself to tolerate, and accept hunger, weight, and exercise-related thoughts and urges. You also learn to cope with guilt and anxiety about food.

World’s heaviest woman is fighting for her life as sister claims she ‘hasn’t lost ANY weight’ – Mirror.co.uk

The world's heaviest woman is thought to be fighting for her life as her sister has made the sensational claim that she 'has not lost any weight'.

Eman Ahmed's sibling says that her sister is not getting the treatment she needs from Dr Muffazal Lakdwala and his team at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai.

Eman, from Egypt, weighed 78.7 stone when was flown to India for a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gasterectomy.

Just one month after her surgery, doctors said the 36-year-old had shed half her entire body weight .

But her sister, Shaimaa Selim, has said that the reports are lies, and that her sister is now extremely sick.

In an interview with Indian media, Shaimaa said: "She is really helpless. Pray for her to leave this place safely.

"People aren't good here. Doctor Muffazal cheated on us.

"He promised us that she will lose weight. Eman has been destroyed. She cannot eat properly now.

"She has been operated on only for show."

Shaimaa also claimed that her sister doesn't talk, is unable to move, and "looks bluish".

She added: "I repeat, everything was a lie. Eman did not lose 240 kilo or 260 kilo. Eman [has been] in this critical situation for one and a half months."

But doctors at the hospital refuted these claims during a press conference.

Chief surgeon Aparna Bhaskar said: "Eman is absolutely fine. She lost over 250kgs in the past three months.

"From our side, everything is fine. She is fit to be discharged. Though she needs some neurological treatment for the stroke she had three years ago, but that can be treated in Egypt as well.

"Eman's sister, Shaimaa, doesn't want to take her sister home as she knows the treatment won't be free there."

The 36-year-old tipped the scales at 78.7 stone and was so heavy she needed to travel on a cargo flight to India for her treatment at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai.

She had to be winched into the medical facility for her surgery earlier this year where she underwent the 90-minute bariatric procedure which reduced her stomach size by three-quarters.

Medics discovered Eman had been suffering from a rare genetic disorder that told her body she was always hungry.

Eman was born weighing a hefty 11lbs and was later diagnosed with elephantiasis, a parasitic disease.

Her growing obesity also led to sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney problems and fluid retention.

By the time she was 11, Eman was too heavy to walk and became bedridden, spending 25 years unable to stand up.

About-Face on ‘Obesity Paradox’: Extra Fat Does Raise Risk of Death – Live Science

Being overweight or obese at some point in adulthood may increase the risk of early death, a new study finds.

The findings contradict the so-called "obesity paradox," a phenomenon seen in previous studies in which overweight people seemed to have a reduced risk of early death compared to those who were of normal weight.

But these prior studies relied on weight measurements at a single point in time, which meant the studies couldn't determine if being overweight was really protective against early death, or if a lower weight was a signal that a person was sick and near death. The new study found that when researchers looked at people's weight over many years, the obesity paradox was reversed.

The new finding is "important from a public health perspective, given that about one-third of adults in the U.S. and more than a quarter of the world's population is overweight," study author Edward Yu, a graduate student at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health in Boston, said in a statement. "This is more reason why people should follow a healthy lifestyle and try to keep a normal weight," Yu said. [The Best Way to Lose Weight Safely]

The study analyzed information from more than 225,000 U.S. adults who took part in three large studies. Every two years, participants were surveyed on their body weight, health problems, smoking habits, physical activity and diet.

The researchers used information on participants' height and weight to calculate their body mass index (BMI) over a 16-year period, then determined their highest or "maximum" BMI during this period. The participants were followed for another 12 years, on average. (At the start of this 12-year follow-up period, most participants were in their 50s or 60s.)

During the follow-up period, more than 32,500 participants died. Those who had a maximum BMI in the overweight range (from 25.0 to 29.9) were 6 percent more likely to die during the follow-up period compared with those who had a maximum BMI in the normal weight range (from 18.5 to 24.9).

What's more, those who had a maximum BMI in the obese range (from 30 to 34.9) or severely obese range (35 or above) were 24 percent to 70 percent more likely to die during the follow-up period, compared to those in the normal weight range.

"The obesity paradox has always been something that we've questioned," said Dr. Vincent Pera, director of weight management at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, who was not involved in the new study.

This new research has a number of strengths over prior studies, including that it gathered data on participants' weight throughout the study and didn't ask participants to think back to what they weighed at some point in the past, Pera said. As a result, the authors were able to make their conclusion in a valid way, Pera said.

Still, additional studies could further examine the link between obesity and risk of early death, he said. For example, researchers could look at whether the duration of a person's obesity affects the individual's risk of death, Pera said.

Overall, studies like the current one can help doctors convey to their patients the importance of controlling their weight, Pera said. "When studies like this seem to align with what, at least, the clinical picture [of obesity] seems to show, I think we feel more confident in speaking to patients about weight control and the benefits of weight control," he said.

The study was published today (April 3) in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

The Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional announced a new expanded cycling studio this week with 54stationary exercise bicycles for 14 classes.

The new bikes on the fourth floor are a part of a $400,000 reinvestment into equipment and technology into the wellness center, Greg Stock, CEO of Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, said in a video on Twitter.

Thebikes are easy for novices and experts to use, Stock said.

This area here is a really nice area for people to come into, Stock said. It has the feel that cyclists like where they are sort of close together on a journey. Theres a video that they play where they go up and down hills, so on and so forth to make it as real as possible.

Cycling gives similar benefits to riding a bicycle outside, including contributing to lower blood pressure, weight loss, increased joint mobility and improved heart health.

Chrisy Myhand, director of the wellness center, said she enjoys seeing people become healthier from cycling.

You really can lose weight, but more importantly, decrease stress and decrease blood pressure, Myhand said. Ive seen a lot of results of people getting off of their blood pressure meds just from cycling two or three times a week."

Myhand said cycling is a low impact type of cardio workout, so people with knee and hip injuries can exercise safely.

There are different types of cycling classes offered, including high-intensity workouts, lower-intensity workouts and some that combine cycling and other activitiessuch as yoga and core exercises.

As we continue to celebrate National Nutrition Month during March, consider some of the basic tips to share with your family and friends in support of healthier eating and safe physical activities to enhance our quality of life.

Tips for Healthy Eating

To help you stay on track with your healthy eating plan, follow these tips:

Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified milk, yogurt or cheese.(Photo: loooby, Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Do not skip meals. Skipping meals may cause your metabolism to slow down or lead you to eat more high-calorie, high-fat foods at your next meal or snack Select high-fiber foods like whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, vegetables and fruits. They may help keep you regular and lower your risk for chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Choose lean beef, turkey breast, fish, or chicken with the skin removed to lower the amount of fat and calories in your meals. As you age, your body needs fewer calories, especially if you are not very active. Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified low-fat/fat-free milk, yogurt, or cheese every day. Milk products are high in calcium and vitamin D and help keep your bones strong as you age. If you have trouble digesting or do not like milk products, try reduced-lactose milk products, or soy-based beverages, or tofu. You can also talk to your health care provider about taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Choose foods fortified with vitamin B12. Many adults over the age of 50 have difficulty absorbing adequate amounts of this vitamin. Therefore, they should get this nutrient through fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals or from a dietary supplement. Talk with your health care provider to ensure that you are consuming enough vitamin B12. Keep nutrient-rich snacks like dried apricots, whole-wheat crackers, peanut butter, low-fat cheese, and low-sodium soup on hand. Eat only small amounts of such foods as dried apricots and peanut butter because they are high in calories. Limit how often you have high-fat and high-sugar snacks like cake, candy, chips and soda Drink plenty of water or water-based fluids. You may notice that you feel less thirsty as you get older, but your body still needs water to stay healthy. Examples of water-based fluids are caffeine-free tea and coffee, soup and low-fat or skim milk.

Check with your health care provider. If you have a problem eating well, such as difficulty chewing or not wanting to.eat, talk to your health care provider or a registered dietitian/nutritionist. They can give you specific advice on following a healthy eating plan that addresses these barriers to healthful eating. Check with your dentist about caring for your teeth or dentures and your gums.

Health risks of being overweight or obese Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure High blood cholesterol Coronary heart disease Stroke Some types of cancer Gallbladder disease

If you already have one or more of these conditions, ask your health care provider if a modest weight loss (5 to 10 percent of your body weight) could help you feel better or need less medicine If you need to lose weight, make sure that you reduce your total calories, but do not reduce your nutrient intake.

Tips for safe physical activity

Physical activity is good for your health at every age. If you have never been active, starting regular physical activity now may improve your strength, endurance and flexibility. Being active may help you live on your own for a longer time and lower your chance of getting type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and colon cancer.

Whatever activity you choose, follow the safety tips below:

Ask your health care provider about ways you can safely increase the amount of physical activity you do now Take time to warm up, cool down and stretch Start slowly and build up to more intense activity; stop the activity if you experience pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath Drink plenty of water When you are active outdoors, wear lightweight clothes in the summer and layers of clothing in the winter Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection Wear shoes that fit well and are right for your activity

Work physical activity into your day

There are plenty of ways to be active without setting aside a special time for exercise.

The tips below may help you to add more activity to your everyday life:

Take short walks throughout your day. Try a 10-minute walk before breakfast, at lunchtime, and after dinner. Clean your house or garage, or get out and do some yard work Consider joining a fitness facility. Look for outdoor walks or hiking activities sponsored by such groups as the Florida Trail Association or Move Tallahassee

These tips can assist us all in enhancing both our (and our seniors) health (and quality of life) across ones lifespan. Scientists Think That Testosterone Affects Stock Prices: Here’s What You Should Know – eMaxHealth

Hormones can affect your mood, sex life, metabolism, energy levels, and more. For men, low testosterone levels can lead to lower energy levels, muscle atrophy, lower libido, and other life-changing effects. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, high testosterone levels for men can lead to overly aggressive behavior, infertility, hair loss, infertility, and acne.

But now researchers think that testosterone levels can influence the stock market significantly. They discovered that for male stock traders, they experience a high after making a profit, which causes them to quickly make risky stock market decisions soon after.

The phenomenon is called psychological momentum, which is when you're experiencing an emotional high and think life is going your way full throttle and that nothing can go wrong. One major factor that causes psychological momentum is a boost in testosterone, which occurs in men right after a successful event (e.g. winning a fight, making profit, etc.). But researchers found that this effect isn't pronounced in women.

The problem is that 90 percent of the participants of financial markets are male. Researcher Dr. Ze'ev Shtudiner says that this testosterone-driven psychological momentum causes male traders to take exaggerated risks that, collectively, make price bubbles. He advises that more female traders saturate markets for stabilization purposes since women don't succumb to the effect.

On the flip side, since enjoying a testosterone boost can raise your confidence and mood, it's good to have a boost here and there. In fact, by manually boosting your testosterone levels during non-crucial decisions, you can improve your self-control by testing yourself when you're experiencing psychological momentum. That means when you experience psychological momentum during high-risk times, you'll be better able to resist making a dumb decision.

Here are a few ways to naturally boost your testosterone:

Take shilajit. Shilajit is a fermented powder common to the Himalayas. It's an Ayurvedic remedy that researchers have proven has anti-cancer properties. It's also been found to boost your cognition and memory. Taking shilajit can also boost your testosterone levels safely.

Get good sleep and lose weight. Dr. George Yu of George Washington University Medical Center advises you to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. He says poor sleep can cause low testosterone levels. Overweight and obese men have been found to tend to have low testosterone levels. Doctors say that losing weight can bring testosterone levels up.

Remember that after an accomplishment, you may get an overwhelming high that can cloud your immediate decisions. Keep a cool mind and try to get used to this high so you can have more self-control.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week: The Children’s Eating Disorder More Common Than Anorexia And Bulimia – Brunel University News (press release)

Eating Disorders Awareness Week is there to do what it says on the tin. And awareness about eating disorders has grown throughout my career. Indeed eating disorders have become synonymous with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa - two devastating mental health problems that call for as much attention as they can get. But both are actually fairly rare. And while I struggle to find people who havent heard about anorexia and bulimia, I rarely meet anyone aware of other eating disorders.

Picture a child sitting at a table, cutlery in hand and food in front of them. Yet no matter what the parent says or does, gentle bribery, cajoling, threats of an early bed, the child simply wont eat. Nearly all parents go through the annoying phase when their child refuses to eat. It usually starts at two. Professionals call it the food neophobic stage of child development. This is normal. Nothing to worry about.

Avoidant/Restrictive food intake disorder or ARFID is actually more common than anorexia and bulimia. It typically starts before the age of five and lasts until adulthood. Youve probably at least heard about both children and adults with ARFID, but perhaps known it by another name. The picky eater. But its a misleading term. What most people call a picky eater is actually a bunch of three separate problems. Two of these are normal. One is a psychological disorder. The term picky eater trivialises the everyday struggle faced by people with ARFID and those around them.

ARFID generally starts between two and five, the same age children hit the food neophobic stage. The difference is the child with ARFID does not grow out of it. Children at this stage generally refuse new foods in favour of things theyre familiar with. Although frustrating, the child eats and doesnt lose weight. But children with ARFID tend to avoid and restrict their food, leading to weight loss or nutrient deficiency. They restrict their diet to sometimes only two or three foods that they deem to be safe. Most often these are foods high in fat, sugar and/or salt. And it damages their health.

A child with ARFID often just looks like they are being naughty at mealtimes. They may refuse to follow the adults requests, run away from the kitchen or dining room and fidget around the table. Again, nothing unusual. But children with ARFID do this nearly, every time food is put on the table and generally lasts for years. This is when well-meaning people dish out advice. The been there, done that mantra is meant as support. As an eating behaviourist professional and a parent, I can safely say ARFID children are different.

The things that get most children through the food neophobic stage, simply dont work, or more accurately will not work in the same time frame, for children with ARFID. Parents of children with ARFID are desperate to stop the behaviour, desperate to get their child to eat and desperate to have a normal food neophobic child. If anything, they can offer other parents advice. Theyve almost certainly tried everything. Worst of all, parents of children with ARFID are often publically blamed and sometimes shamed for their childs apparent willfulness.

In more than 10 ten years working with children with ARFID, it is very rare that anything the parents did or do caused the problem. They are not at fault. ARFID is an eating disorder. The child is anxious about food, may have experienced a traumatic event with food or find different tastes, smells or textures of food offensive. The behaviour stems from their interaction with food and has little to do with what the parents have or have not done. ARFID stays with the child. It does not get better with time and harms childrens health.

Next time you see that child across the table playing up and refusing to eat, 99 times out of 100 it is just a phase. But alarm bells start to sound if their behaviour does not improve by 6 years of age and especially if the child starts to lose weight. It might be that 1 in 100 case of ARFID. This is when its crucial to get professional advice to improve the childs diet. When you see that child with ARFID, understand that it is not the parents fault and your advice has likely been tried, tested and failed. For parents of children with ARFID, that frustrating phase all parents went through is a daily reality, with no signs of improvement.

The road to recovery from ARFID is possible, but is likely to need specialist support. Several specialist centres across the world are available and can help. And I hope this spurs your interest just enough to find out more about other eating disorders beyond those you think you already know about. ARFID is just one. There are others. Disorders like pica and rumination also appear to have lower public awareness than anorexia and bulimia. Maybe its time tofind out more.

9 Ways To Enhance Your Presentation Skills – Business 2 Community

In a recent article from INC.com, Jeff Haden offers 16 Ways to Dramatically Improve Your Presentation Skills From 16 Powerful TED Talks. Theres some great ideas in here and I wanted to take the opportunity to elaborate on some of these points and offer my two cents on the ways in which you can significantly improve your presentation skills. I will however, limit this advice to that which is relevant to a business/boardroom context.

Ive previously discussed the use of Aristotles rhetoric techniques, and harnessing genuine emotion- also known as Pathos. Pathos is about creating an emotional connection between you and the audience. The obvious, recent example is the US election and The Donald. Donald Trump was able to create such a strong emotionally fuelled bond with the American people that he secured a win over what many considered to be the better, more prepared, logical choice.

Trump is just a recent example, but emotion be it a shared empathy, your own passion, public anger, community pride, shared objectives, or a common goal, is one of the most significant arrows in your quiver when youre wanting to create and maintain engagement with your audience. One effective way to convey your thoughts and inspire action is to choose an example or an analogy/metaphor that is relevant to most of the people in the audience. This makes that idea easily relatable, which gives the participants a more concrete understanding of the points youre trying to put across. Its the difference between knowing that single example, and understanding how to apply the concept to their business.

The boiling frog anecdote is a common example. If youve not heard it before, it describes how a frog can unwittingly get boiled alive due to it jumping into cold water that then becomes slowly heated up. If it had jumped directly into boiling hot water, then it would have instantly realised and jumped out immediately.

In a business sense, this analogy illustrates the lack of perception towards small changes. For example, say you wanted to decrease public transport pollution. A small change could be fitting start/stop systems to all buses, while a boiling water option would be more dramatic like making all buses electric.

All too often, I witness presenters that insist questions be left to the end. Thats crazy! If people are getting involved and asking questions, theyre clearly engaged and interested in what youre saying and you should converse with them in the moment.

While many can find it distracting, its important to realise that the most valuable presentations feel like a chat between friends. Including questions when they arrive adds value to that participants views and will no doubt endear them to you for the remainder of that presentation and future ones.

Waiting until the end of a business presentation can be fatiguing to some participants, and any in-the-moment fire they had has likely quelled. So while its important to stay on track with your message, dont avoid the people trying to get the most out of it.

Thats not to say prepare nothing and gabble on about anything, but it is to say that if you feel like youre underprepared or lacking in some speaking talents, then try to promote a confident image as this will help your audience engage with you from the start and allow you to find your feet.

If all your presentation consists of is reading your slide presentation, ask yourself what the point of giving that presentation is, and whats the point of YOU being there! Your audience could just read your slides and be just as well off without having to be in a meeting.

While it may be important to have detailed slides that you can reference (actually, why not consider handouts too), the audience is your primary focus. Your slideshow is your auxiliary tool to display the information youre presenting on, be that graphs, spreadsheets or artwork. Use it to show what you cant put into words easily.

That way, you can stay on track and your audience doesnt have to stare at the same slide forever while you make your way through the 15 dot points youve jotted down!

Ever heard the statistic that only 20% of the information you hear gets retained? While this statistic is debatable, its safe to assume that not everything you say goes in one ear and nests safely in the comfort of remembrance. So instead of assuming that everyone is absorbing your information in full, use the power of repetition to enforce the critical points youre trying to get across.

Tying everything back to your main point is a brilliant and effective way to repeat information in a non-irritating manner. In other words, youll have frequent opportunities to hammer your points home and let it sink into the audience without boring them to tears!

Theres nothing worse than expecting something to end only to have it drag on for a seemingly indefinite amount of time. If you have an hour to complete your presentation, prepare for that time limit and keep to it, remembering to allow some contingency during the presentation for questions, if applicable.
