How We Live
Feb 21, 2017
WHEELING Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital, along with East Ohio Regional Outpatient Center St. Clairsville, are committed to excellence in womens health with services that can only be found at our facilities.
The year 2016 brought a newly remodeled wing called The Birth Center at OVMC with warm and comforting mother and baby suites that allow for critical bonding time.
The Birth Center at OVMC offers families The Golden Hour where mother and child experience uninterrupted skin-to-skin time. Research has shown that this special time increases bonding between the mother and baby and is critical to the babys growth and development.
Visitation during this time is limited to the mother, baby, and the mothers primary support person. During the Golden Hour, healthy newborns are placed in Kangaroo Care, skin-to-skin, immediately following birth and remain there for at least one hour. All immediate care of the newborn including drying, vital signs, and physical assessment will take place while the baby is on the mothers chest. Weighing, measuring, and bathing will be delayed until after that first hour. The baby will remain with the mother throughout the recovery period.
The Birth Center at OVMC encourages skin-to-skin contact where the newborn baby, dressed only in a diaper and hat, is placed directly on moms (or moms support persons) chest, and they are covered with warmed blankets. This skin-to-skin contact happens during the Golden Hour and continues to benefit the mother and baby throughout the hospital stay and even at home. Nurses show you how to properly position your baby for safe skin-to-skin bonding. There are many health benefits to skin-to-skin bonding. It helps mothers and babies learn to breastfeed.
Mothers who breastfeed have less bleeding, may lose weight more quickly, and may have a reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease and breast and ovarian cancers. Babies who are breastfed may have a reduced risk of ear infections, allergic illnesses, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, obesity and sudden infant death. All parents are encouraged to room-in with their newborns 24 hours per day. We want you to become familiar with your baby by learning his/her feeding cues as well as their behavior.
The staff at The BirthCenter at OVMC also work closely with Kristy Edie, West Virginia ambassador for Count the Kicks, to help educate expectant mothers on the importance of monitoring their babies movements in the third trimester. Edie worked to bring the program locally after she lost her baby in her third trimester of pregnancy.
While your chances of losing your baby after the first trimester decrease, one out of every 150 pregnancies ends in stillbirth, said Edie. Fifty percent of mothers who have lost a baby to stillbirth reported perceived gradual decline in fetal movement several days prior to the death of their baby. Count the Kicks will help you detect any significant changes in your babys movements that may indicate potential problems.
Childbirth educators at The BirthCenter will work with expecting mothers to teach them how to Count the Kicks with the guidance of Edie and information established by healthybirthday.org, the parent organization for Count the Kicks.
Sherri Kellas, RN, Womens Health Nurse Navigator, and Childbirth Educator, says, By teaming up with Kristy as the new ambassador of the West Virginia Count the Kicks program, we are helping to inform and educate our community about a very simple movement check that moms can do when they are in their third trimester of pregnancy, when they are 28 to 40 weeks pregnant, the last 12 weeks of their pregnancy, to monitor their babys well-being and keep their babies safe!
Kellas continued saying, Its as simple as setting aside time each day to relax, lie on your side, and monitor for baby movement. And a movement can be a kick, roll, jab, twist, turn or swish. It is a reassuring sign of baby wellness to feel 10 kicks in a two-hour time period. You should eat and drink something prior to monitoring movement and pick a time when your baby usually is active. If your baby is not making 10 kicks or movements in two hours, you need to call your physician or health care professional.
AFFORDABLE CARE
In an effort to help prospective parents find hospitals that deliver quality and affordable maternity care, Highmark BCBS West Virginia announced that Ohio Valley Medical Center has been designated as one of the first hospitals to receive the Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care, a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.
Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization. This new Blue Distinction Centers+ for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. Compared with babies born 39 weeks or later, early term infants face higher risks of infant death and respiratory ailments such as respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, among other conditions. These babies also have a higher rate of admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
We at The Birth Center at OVMC take pride and joy in providing you and your baby with exceptional quality care, said Dr. Lea Harms, obstetrician and gynecologist. Making you feel welcome, safe, and taken care of from the first time you meet us throughout your delivery, postpartum, and beyond. We are proud to have earned this distinction.
Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care, an expansion of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, recognizes hospitals for delivering quality, affordable specialty care safely and effectively, based on objective measures developed with input from the medical community. To receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation, a hospital must also meet requirements for cost.
In 2016, was the first full year for the Virginia Gasaway Womens Services program. ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - February 15, 2017) - Honduran naturalist and holistic health guru, Dr. Sebi might have been best known for his claims that individuals should be only consuming foods that are identified as 'alkalizing plant foods (the alkaline diet)' to support the claim on his website that, "These foods control the acid level in the body, which protects against harmful mucus buildup that compromises organs and leads to the development of disease." Dr. Nishant Rao -- Medical Director of the nationally recognized weight loss program, Diet Doc believes that this particular claim isn't backed up by the facts. "The truth is that food has a very minor impact on the acid level within the body, which is in fact controlled by the lungs and the kidneys." Dr. Rao continues, "The body's normal acidic range is extremely narrow 7.35 to 7.45. Additionally, the pH for blood (which Dr. Sebi's diet is presumably referring to) is different from that of various cells in various parts of the body." Blood pH is highly regulated by the body, to the point where severe health issues can occur if it is thrown out of range.
Also, Dr. Rao warns that dieters should be aware of additional claims that aren't entirely factual. "Sebi's dietary information includes a few dubious statements such as, 'fruit contains protein'." Dr. Rao states that, "The diet's focus on vegetables that offer very little protein will produce weight loss, but that weight will primarily be muscle and will be very short lived, in addition to an overall negative effect on health and hormones." Dr. Rao believes that rather than merely attempting to eat an alkaline-based diet, individuals should opt for doctor-supervised diet planning that can be individual-specific in order to tackle one's dietary needs. While consuming more fruits and vegetables is always a good choice, overall it is more beneficial health-wise to create a nutritionally balanced diet to address the entire body's needs. Diet Doc offers unlimited dietary consulting with nutritional coaches and medical weight loss experts to help you lose weight quickly and safely. Heaviest woman on Earth to undergo weight-loss surgery – Pulse Headlines

The worlds heaviest woman has arrived in Mumbai, India, to undergo a weight-loss surgery that could help save her life. Eman Ahmed weighs approximately 500 kg and was admitted Saturday at Mumbais Saifee Hospital.
Ahmed was born in 1980 in Alexandria, Egypt. During her childhood, she suffered from a thyroid problem which forced her to stop attending school. Currently, she does not only faces obesitybut also suffers from many other diseases such as severe lymphedema and water retention, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, gout, severe obstructive and restrictive lung disease. She has also already suffered a stroke that left her right arm and leg paralyzed, she does not speak coherently and is at high risk of pulmonary embolism, as reported by The Times of India.
Eman Ahmed will undergo a weight-reduction bariatric surgery that will be carried by Dr. Muffazal Lakdwala.Bariatric surgeries are special procedures that help the body loseweight by restricting the amount of food the stomach can receive, as explained by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This restriction occurs by reducing the size of the stomach using any bariatric method, being the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and the adjustable gastric band the most commonly used.
It is not specified which procedure the woman is undergoing, but any of them can bring her what she needs to change and save her life.
Emans medicalvisa to travel to Mumbai was initially denied, so her family contacted Dr. Lakdawala in October last year to help them and take the case. The doctor contactedExternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who granted her the visa for her treatment.
This was Ahmeds first trip outside her home in Alexandria after nearly 25 years of spending her life in her room and unable to take care of herself. It was such a complicated trip that doctors had to begin treating her since December to ensure that she could travel safely from Egypt to India.
To prepare her for the flight, the team of doctors have been in Egypt for the last ten days to optimise the conditions for her travel; given the fact that she is so heavy and not moved for the last 25 years she is at a high risk for a pulmonary embolism and hence has been put on blood thinners to try and minimise the chances of such an eventuality during her transfer,Dr Lakdawala said in a press release on Friday, as The Times of India reported.
Eman had to be carried in special transportation due to her heavy weight. She was airlifted on a special aircraft since she could not pass through the doors of a regular plane. After arriving in India, she had to be loaded onto a truck using a crane, and another crane was then used to hoist her to her room in Saifee Hospital, as reported by The Inquisitr.
After she was admitted to the hospital, Ahmed has to undergo thorough evaluation for the next two days, according to a spokesperson for the doctor, before going into surgery.

A recent study of Biggest Loser participants showed that metabolism decreases during weight loss and persists for six years. Recently,San Luis Obispo weight loss expert Carol Rowsemittweighed in as to why this occurred. To view her report, see below:
Dr. Kevin Hall and colleagues have gotten a lot of well-deserved attention for their work on metabolism in weight loss attempts in recent years. Our metabolism is determined by thyroid function.
Rowsemitt: The thyroid gland is in the neck. The hormones from the thyroid regulate metabolism. If your metabolism is high, you burn more calories at rest than would be normal. If your metabolism is low, you burn fewer calories at rest than normal. Symptoms of low thyroid include: cold, cold hands and feet, extreme fatigue, constipation, dry skin, hair loss. And with low thyroid, its hard to lose weight and easy to gain weight. Its also really hard to get out and exercise because you are exhausted.
Rowsemitt: Many different problems can cause low thyroid, including lack of iodine in the diet and eating large quantities of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussel sprouts). However, what is less well known relates to trying to lose weight.
In 1950, a study showed that young men fed a low calorie diet decreased their metabolism. Studies have confirmed this over the years, but the concept was not well known. That same year, a
Photo credit J. Emilio Flores for The New York Times.
researcher burned a pound of fat and found it contained 3500 kilocalories (commonly referred to as calories). The guy with the pound of fat must have had a better press agent because weve all been taught for years that if you eat 3500 fewer calories, you will lose a pound. But if you put the two ideas together, you get a better understanding of the real problem.
We have a thermostat in the hypothalamus, a small portion of the brain. This thermostat sets your rate of metabolism. Eat less and your thermostat recognizes that youre arent getting enough food to support your current weight; the thermostat resets to a lower rate so youll burn fewer calories at rest. You may be carrying an extra 100 lbs. that youre trying to lose, but the body pays more attention to the lack of current food supply. This response results from eons of evolution so that we can survive famine. So the thyroid has decreased function ON PURPOSE. We currently have no way to convince the thyroid to make more hormone during this time.
Rowsemitt: We were all taught to measure just TSH, the pituitary hormone that tells the thyroid gland how much thyroid hormone to make, rather than the actual thyroid hormones. That works fine most of the time. However, when you are in the famine response, youre burning fewer calories at rest, but TSH is perfectly normal because the thermostat has been reset lower. So if youre dieting, doing everything youre supposed to do to lose weight, and your thermostat is reset down, your doctor or other provider may order TSH, find its normal, and tell you your thyroid is fine. The active thyroid hormone, T3, is likely to be at the low end of normal and your metabolism will be low.
Rowsemitt: Sort of. However, most health care providers are not aware of the resetting of the thermostat and how to effectively treat the thyroid to safely eliminate low thyroid symptoms. I gave a presentation at the Obesity Medicine Association meetings in late September addressing these issues.

Wrestlers: Tips on Losing Weight Safely
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Wrestlers cutting weight to compete in a weight class is nothing new. Unfortunately, many of these athletes take on unhealthy methods to lose weight. When weight loss is done in a healthy way, the wrestler can become stronger and more competitive in a lower weight class..
An estimated 25%-67% of wrestlers use techniques such as over exercise, calorie restriction, fasting, and different dehydration methods to lose weight. Wrestlers tend to believe this type of action will improve their performance, but in reality this usually only makes things worse.
Dehydration is a main health concern when losing weight quickly. It occurs when a wrestler cuts off their intake of fluids. Dehydration is the worst method of losing weight since it causes quick decline in strength, endurance and mental alertness.
Symptoms of dehydration can become noticeable after as little as 2% loss of normal water volume. Drinking too little water in combination with heavy exercise may cause cramps or, in extreme cases, heatstroke and swelling of the brain which causes seizures and hypovolemic shock.
A simple, efficient way of determining proper hydration is to check urine color. Dark urine (similar to apple juice) indicates dehydration and clear urine indicates adequate hydration.
Malnutrition is also pretty common among wrestlers trying to lose weight quickly. Dehydration combined with extreme calorie reduction can result in a loss of strength, muscular endurance, stamina, and concentration. Sudden unhealthy weight loss can mean that a wrestler is not getting essential nutrients like protein, calories, B vitamins, iron, and zinc; this can cause depression, muscle atrophy and lower testosterone levels. Many wrestlers have gone as far as vomiting before weigh-ins in order to make a specific weight class for a wrestling match.
Every high school wrestling program in American is required to use the national hydration assessment tests to determine if a wrestler is fit to wrestle. These tests are intended to analyze body fat percentages at the alpha weight and establish how much weight a wrestler can lose each week. When a wrestler reaches the minimum body fat percentage of 7% for boys or 12% for girls of their alpha fat composition, the wrestler cannot lose any more weight due to competition rules.
This system was put in place to ensure healthy weight loss and to minimize the harmful side effects of rapid weight loss. In Colorado, for health and safety reasons, the states weight control program requires hydration testing with a specific gravity not greater than 1.025, which is tested immediately prior to the body fat assessment. Any wrestlers assessment that is below 7% for boys and 12% for girls must have a release form signed by a healthcare professional to participate in an upcoming event. This release wont allow a wrestler to participate at a weight class below that for which the initial assessment allows. A 2 lb. variance above the scratch weight is permitted at the time of certification if signed by the parent and a physician.

How to safely lose the baby weight without dieting | Fox News

Its such a relief when you finally ditch the maternity pants for your favorite jeans, but how you get there is important. Drastically cutting calories, working out too hard and setting high expectations for weight loss isnt good for you or your baby.
Experts agree with a healthy diet, gentle exercise and love for your body, you can safely and easily shed the extra pounds. Read on to learn their strategies.
Be realistic. It took nine months to gain the weight so you have to give yourself at least the same amount of time to lose it. If you were overweight before you became pregnant, it will likely take longer.
Youll lose a lot of water weight in the first few weeks after you give birth, but after that a halfpound to two pounds per week is a healthy goal, said Tamara S. Melton, an Atlanta-based registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
Hydrate. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, especially because hunger can often be mistaken for thirst. Plus, drinking water can help you lose weight. In fact, a recent study out of the University of Birmingham found that obese adults who drank 500 milliliters, or about 17 ounces, of water before each meal lost nearly 10 more pounds than those who didnt.
Fill up on protein. Eating protein at every meal and snack will help you feel satiated, keep your blood sugar stable and give you energy for all those feedings and diaper changes.
Eat plenty of vegetables. Try your best to eat five to nine servings of vegetables a day. Not only will you get a ton of nutrition, but vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber and water which will keep you feeling full longer. Add spinach to your eggs, have a salad for lunch and blend greens into your smoothie and youll get your fill in no time.
Cut carbs. To accelerate weight loss, deemphasize carbohydrates and the empty calories that come along with things like bread and pasta. Too many carbs will spike and drop your blood sugar which will make you feel shaky and even more hungry.
Its a cycle that perpetuates holding onto extra weight that your body doesnt actually need any more, said Leah Keller, a pre- and post-natal fitness expert in New York City and founder of the Dia Method.
She recommends 50 grams a day for two weeks, 75 grams between weeks two and eight and 100 grams for maintenance.
Breast-feed. Sure, breast-feeding can make shedding the weight easier, but just because you can have an extra 500 calories (if youre exclusively breast-feeding), doesnt mean you have to eat all of them. Listen to your hunger cues and be mindful of what youre eating, since you can quickly blow the calories on high-calorie fare in one sitting.
You might also hang onto an extra five pounds until youve completely weaned your baby, Keller said. Once you do wean, you might see a small weight gain as your appetite gets regulated, but the rest of the weight will probably fall off without effort.
Sit down. Life is hectic with a newborn, especially during the first few weeks, but if you can carve out 10 minutes to sit down for a meal, chances are youll eat healthier, consume less calories and feel more nourished.
Track with an app. Keeping a food journal or using an app to track your food is a good idea after pregnancy. Its easy to eat mindlessly or overeat, especially if you have other children, are feeling overwhelmed, dont have time to eat or are sleep-deprived and turn to food for comfort, Melton said.
Prepare meals. Try to prepare dinners so you wont be tempted with takeout. When your baby naps, set aside individual portions of healthy snacks such as vegetables and hummus, fruit and nuts or string cheese.
Give yourself time. Most providers will give the green light to exercise between four and six weeks post-delivery, depending on the type of birth you had and other individual factors. Because you still have instability in the hips and pelvis, laxity in the joints, and your pelvic floor is healing, youre more prone to incontinence and injury.
Theres still a lot going on hormonally and your body has just been through a massive upheaval and transformation, Keller said.
Restore balance. In order to do other types of exercises safely, you need to restore strength and integrity to the core, which includes the abdominal muscles, the back and the pelvic floor, Keller said. Look for postpartum fitness programs that include deep breathing and gentle abdominal activation.
Ease into it. When you feel ready, add light cardio and resistance training one to two days a week, which is good for restoring muscle tone and for metabolism, Keller said. Start out with brisk walking, the elliptical or an easy bike ride before diving deep into training for a 5K.
Splurge. Let yourself eat a special dessert or a favorite dish once or twice a week. It will be easier to eat healthy 80 percent of the time when you give yourself permission to enjoy foods you love the other 20.
Be kind to yourself. Stop comparing yourself to celebrities or other moms and let go of your expectations about the time and energy you thought you would have after having your baby. Instead of punishing yourself at the gym for that piece of chocolate cake, beating yourself up because you were too tired to work out, make your goal to be healthy and active as a gift to yourself and as an example for your family.
Treat yourself and your body with the love that you want to extend to your child, Keller said.

You can breastfeed and lose weight at the same time if you do it slowly. Don't expect any miracle cures: Plan to take 10 months to a year to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight.
Gradual weight loss through healthy, low-fat eating and moderate exercise is important. Losing weight too quickly releases the toxins (PCBs and pesticides) that are stored in your body fat into your bloodstream. This, in turn, increases the amount in your milk supply.
Don't think you have to wean your baby in order to lose weight. In fact, breastfeeding makes it easier to lose the excess weight because your body uses the stored energy in fat to make milk.
You'll lose weight naturally if you're nursing around the clock and eating a balanced diet. Choosing whole foods, eating slowly so you'll know when you're full, drinking when you're thirsty, and getting some exercise (walking with your baby in a sling is great!) all help with weight loss.
Women who are overweight or obese during or after pregnancy might need more help. A nutritionist or registered dietitian can provide advice on calorie intake and exercise for healthy weight loss, and may be able to help identify any underlying issues contributing to excess weight.
