Do Waist Trainers Work Or Are They Total B.S.? – HuffPost
Welcome to Beneficial Or B.S.?, where we investigate the health and fitness trends that are all over social media to determine whether theyre actually worth trying.
Between the worlds history of corsets and girdles, wanting a slim waist is certainly nothing new.
What is new, though, is using waist trainers in a workout to achieve it a phenomenon largely made famous by trending social media posts and fitness influencers. The claim from people who use waist trainers? It helps you lose weight around your midsection. But is that true?
Below, experts share their thoughts on waist trainers and give you the lowdown on whether it really slims your waist.
First, what is a waist trainer and why do people wear it?
Waist trainers are a form-fitting structure that wraps around the waist to compress the area kind of like an old-school girdle or a corset, according to Dr. Jason Womack, chief of the department of sports medicine at Rutgers Universitys Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey.
Some waist trainers are all elastic, while others have hooks, zippers or velcro but all have the same goal of cinching the waist to create a specific, hourglass form of the body.
It seems to have a more aesthetic purpose as opposed to a true medical purpose, Womack said. He added that beyond creating a specific form, the goal of the waist trainer also involves training the core and losing weight.
Do waist trainers slim your waist or build your core?
People certainly look different when theyre wearing a waist trainer in the short run, said Dr. David Creel, a registered dietitian in the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. But, this change is very temporary, Creel stressed.
Theres no evidence that these [result in] permanent changes in your shape, he said. Fat cells may move around temporarily but theyll go back in place after the waist trainer comes off.
And when it comes to weight loss, Creel stated that there is no mechanism to support that waist trainers help you lose weight just by wearing them.
To put it frankly, in my professional opinion, waist trainers are a gimmick, said Dr. Alex McDonald, a family physician who specializes in sports medicine at Kaiser Permanente in California.
Anon Krudsumlit / EyeEm via Getty Images
Are there any practical uses for it?
No, probably not, but, if someone you know is instructed to wear something that looks like a waist trainer, there is a reason.
There are some situations where people wear abdominal binders, which look similar to waist trainers, Womack said, but the two couldnt be more different. Abdominal binders are intended for people who had recent stomach surgery or a C-section.
Studies show that when people wear abdominal binders, it helps them regain some of their muscle strength sooner. But, this goes for people who had a significant injury or surgery to their abdominals, not the everyday person who is just trying to increase their strength, he noted.
What are the dangers of wearing a waist trainer?
Beyond being uncomfortable, McDonald said, waist trainers may also impair diaphragm motion and reduce athletic performance.
In other words, they make it harder to breathe, and catching your breath is pretty crucial when doing a tough workout.
Luis Alvarez via Getty Images
Even more, it could put stress on other parts of your body and work your core less.
Some people claim that waist trainers help with core strengthening or losing weight when you work out, Womack stated. But, he added, that is probably not the case.
The waist trainer could actually modify the way that your core muscles are activating during activity, he said. Youre not actually activating those muscles in the most effective way.
Similarly, he said, heavy weightlifters may wear waist belts, which help spread pressure across a wider area so they experience less strain. If anything, waist trainers could create stress on different areas of the body and put unexpected pressure on a different muscle group.
Because of this comparison, Womack noted that he is not sure why waist trainers would be considered something [that] makes a workout better or more effective.
And it doesnt promote a healthy way to get fit.
Beyond this, Creel said that the biggest concern he has is that waist trainers take the focus off of what is important and effective when it comes to physical health. He explained that waist trainers make people chase a certain look instead of focusing on their well-being.
And since waist trainers arent an effective tool for weight loss or muscle building, Creel emphasized that people should turn to the fitness and healthy-eating methods that are proven with decades of research.
Studies say we cant spot reduce our weight so I cant do crunches and then get rid of fat around my waist, he said.
He added that when we lose weight, we have the same shape but its smaller, so if youre apple-shaped youre a smaller apple. A waist trainer isnt going to change your genetic build.
Focusing more on the health benefits of working out, and not just the appearance, is crucial, Creel noted. If people solely focus on appearance, theyll be chasing the ever-changing in body trends and may never be satisfied
When we focus on health and a healthy body, he said, theres more acceptance with how that body looks versus just chasing a certain look, which, sometimes genetically, were not predisposed to look that way.

Matt Lucas says seeing himself on telly prompted him to lose weight credit:Bang Showbiz
Matt Lucas decided to lose after watching himself on television.
The 48-year-old TV star - who hosts Channel 4 baking competition 'The Great British Bake Off' alongside Noel Fielding - received a message from Lord Alan Sugar congratulating him on his transformation and replied by noting that he was inspired to lose the weight after realising that he could "barely fit" on the screen.
He tweeted: "Thanks. Basically, I was already pretty big and then I went into a large white tent and ate most of the cake inside. Then I saw myself on telly and thought 'I can barely fit on the screen and realised it was time to do something about it. That said, I have just had a Pot Noodle!"
The 'Little Britain' star once weighed a reported 14 stone and previously explained that he knew he had to do "something" about his diet during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
During an appearance on ITV's 'Lorraine', he was asked: "How on Earth though, have you been in lockdown and working on Bake Off and you've lost tonnes of weight?"
Matt replied: "I've lost some weight, I needed to take the edge off, because I put on a lot of weight in lockdown,
"I just had to do something about it.
"I've still got a bit of a tum, I've got a little bit of a tum, I'm not a skinny Minnie.
"I might have to make a game of it when I go out and exercise to stay out of people's way. I don't have a garden so I have to find a way to do that."

Cancer survivor says losing weight with Slimming World may have saved her life – Blackpool Gazette
Lindsay Notts, from St Annes, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer after finding a dense mass at the age of 47.
She was diagnosed with cancer in October 2018 just months after signing up to Slimming World in May that year.
At that point she had lost two stone, which Lindsay believes helped her notice the change in her breast.
She was not due to have her first routine mammogram until three years later, by which time it could have been a very different outcome.
Lindsay began treatment in 2018 and had her third surgery two years later.
During this time she put on the weight she had initially lost as her Slimming World journey was put on the back burner.
Lindsay returned to Slimming World after her cancer treatment and has now achieved another incredible milestone after focusing on getting healthy again.
She has lost five stone to reach a healthy body mass index (BMI) so she can be in the best shape for surgery to have new breasts.
Slimming World consultant Nat Meadows said Lindsay, who joined during the winter lockdown, is an inspiration to others.
She said: Lindsay has been through tough times. She is really inspiring.
"She is adament that losing weight initially saved her life, and now she has a healthy BMI, decent blood pressure and doesnt have any of the risk factors which means she can have surgery for new boobs.
"Its a major commitment to join in lockdown when the meetings were being done remotely on Zoom.
"She came to every meeting. She is really focused and doesnt want to go backwards.
Lindsay returned to Slimming World in January 2021 as she knew being slimmer would improve her health and reduce the chances of reoccurrence of cancer and other health conditions.
She stuck with the Food Optimising plan and set herself an ambitious target of losing five stone, which she has now achieved.
Lindsay said: When the world opened back up I could still go out and socialise and lose weight without having to count a single calorie.
"There were some weeks where it was hard but I was so lucky to have the support of my group with Nat Meadows.
"On the weeks I went down a gear, they went up a gear and gave me the motivation and encouragement to go on.
Consultant Nat added: Lindsay made huge changes to the way she shopped going down the the fruit and vegetable, lean meat, and poultry aisles first to fill up on all the free foods you can enjoy while Food Optimising from a list of over 330.
"She also started enjoying new activities such as boxing and when she went on a recent skiing trip she had to size down by four sizes in all her ski gear.
She is now a size 10, has a healthy BMI and is excited for those new boobs to look amazing on her new body.
Slimming World consultant Nat Meadows holds her group on Mondays at 8am, 9.30am, 5pm and 6.45pm at South Shore Tennis Club on Midgeland Road.

From back pain to UTIs and weight loss Dr Zoe Williams answers your questions… – The US Sun
HOW often have you felt a twinge in your back and blamed your sciatica?
This nerve is a real problem area for lots of people, causing shooting pains and numbness.
1
If you keep finding yourself clutching your lower back in agony, or worrying about a slipped disc, rest assured, youre not alone and it should heal fairly quickly, as I tell one reader this week.
As always, however common a health problem is, no question is too silly or small just drop me a line.
Im here to help.
Here are some of the letters I have received this week.
Q) Can you advise me about spine trouble? Mine is so painful. I hate scans, and they say sciatica cant be operated on.
A) Spine trouble is a broad subject, as there are a number of issues people may have with the spine. You mention sciatica, so lets focus on that.
Sciatica is a common condition that I see in general practice all the time. Its caused by irritation to the sciatic nerve.
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower back, travels through your hip and goes all the way down to the foot.
It is most commonly irritated by pressure from a bulging disc in the spine.
If the disc, which sits between the vertebra gets squashed, some of its jelly-like contents can bulge out into the space where the sciatic nerve sits. This is sometimes referred to as a slipped disc.
So while the problem is at the level of the lower back, people often feel symptoms lower down, in the buttock, leg and foot.
This is because the nerve isnt able to tell where exactly it is being compressed, so symptoms may be along its whole length.
Most commonly people experience nerve-type pain, with a stabbing, burning or shooting nature, sometimes people have pins and needles, numbness or weakness.
There is a good video on the NHS website explaining what it is. See nhs.uk/conditions/sciatica and scroll to the bottom.
In most cases symptoms resolve on their own over about six weeks, and youll likely benefit from painkillers during this period.
Its important to keep moving an exercise video is available on the NHS website, just search exercises for sciatica.
In some cases further treatment is required, including surgery, but this wouldnt be the right option for everyone.
There are alternatives such as painkilling injections, and other procedures which use radiofrequency waves to block nerves.
An MRI scan gives the best view of what is happening with the nerves in the body.
Always seek medical attention immediately if you have back pain associated with loss of control of your bladder or bowels, inability to fully empty your bladder, or progressive weakness of both legs.
Q) How can you lose weight while you are pregnant?
A) It is quite common to lose a small amount of weight in the first trimester, especially with severe morning sickness.
This small unintentional weight loss in early pregnancy will not harm the baby. Intentional weight loss is not usually recommended.
Weight gain in pregnancy is normal and varies greatly, though is mostly between 10kg and 12.5kg, most of which is put on after week 20. Its widely known that we need to eat a little more while pregnant, but only around 200 calories a day.
The advice for women who are overweight or have obesity is that with proper nutrition guidance, it is safe and feasible to restrict weight gain, or even aim to maintain their pre-pregnancy weight.
Pregnancy is a unique opportunity to establish new and healthier habits.
Healthy eating and physical activity will benefit both mother and baby.
If the pregnant person doesnt usually exercise, then start out with about 15 minutes of continuous exercise, three times per week, increasing gradually towards 30-minute sessions every day. Healthy exercise includes swimming and pregnancy yoga.
Actual weight loss in pregnancy should only be the aim in those who have received individualised medical advice and are receiving support to do so safely.
This is only likely to be the case when the pregnant person has severe obesity or poorly controlled diabetes, and the weight loss is likely to mitigate some of the risks associated with these conditions.
Q) Why would I keep getting urinary tract infections (UTIs) when Ive been on eight antibiotics this past two months, and my bloods are OK?
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are becoming more and more common. A major reason for this is the global antimicrobial resistance crisis.
UTIs are generally becoming harder to treat as the bacteria become resistant to antibiotics.
While repeated infections tend to be caused by the same type of bacteria, some UTIs, like yours, now manage to survive multiple rounds of antibiotic treatment.
There are a few things women can do to reduce our risk of UTIs, such as urinating immediately after sex and wiping from front to back after going to the toilet.
The next steps will depend on your personal details and full medical history.
However, it is likely that some investigations are required, including urine cultures, a blood test and a scan of your kidneys.
Odd feeling in my throat
Q) FOR months I have felt like something is stuck in my throat. Ive had gastroscopy done and a stool sample taken. The results came back negative.
Ive been prescribed Lansoprazole and Gaviscon but neither helped. Im awaiting an appointment where I will have an examination done via my nostrils. I can still eat and drink well. Whats going on?
A) The sensation of something stuck in the throat is often named globus. Globus can be caused by many things, such as an increased tension of muscles or irritation in the throat.
One common cause is excess stomach acid and reflux of it into the oesophagus. This can cause burning to the lining of the oesophagus, and the associated swelling can give the symptom of globus.
It seems your doctors have considered this, hence the medications that reduce stomach acid and the camera test.
The stool test was likely to identify the presence of Helicobacter pylori. This is a type of bacteria that is present in many of us and causes no issues, so can be left alone, but it can increase the production of stomach acid, so in those with symptoms it is best to eradicate it with antibiotics.
A nasendoscopy is a camera inserted via the nostril and this can look at the back of the throat and voicebox, to identify any inflammation, injury or structural cause.
Sometimes these tests find nothing, and actually one of the commonest causes of globus is stress and anxiety.

Habits Secretly Increasing Your Prediabetes Risk, Say Physicians Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
According to the CDC, 37.3 million people in the U.S. have diabetes (11.3% of the population) and 96 million people aged 18 years or older have prediabetes (38.0% of the adult population).
"As recently as 50 years ago, type 2 diabetes was extremely rare. Now, around the world, the number of people with diabetes is increasing rapidly and is heading towards 643 million by 2030. This is a worldwide epidemic," says Adele Hite, PhD, MPH, RD. "In the past, type 2 diabetes was thought to be a progressive disease with no hope for reversal or remission. People were and sometimes still are taught to 'manage' type 2 diabetes, rather than to try to reverse the underlying process. But now people with type 2 diabetes can hope to regain their health." Here are five habits increasing your prediabetes risk. Read onand to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had COVID.
Lack of sleep is strongly linked to both diabetes and prediabetes, doctors warn. "How does poor sleep contribute to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic issues? It's known that lack of sleep raises the stress hormone cortisol and increases glucose production, which raises your blood sugar," says Tony Hampton, MD. "Studies have shown that markers of increased insulin resistance appear after just one night of partial sleep deprivation. Symptoms of prediabetes can arise with as little as five days of sleep disturbances. Blood pressure also increases with sleep deprivation."
Excessive belly fat is particularly dangerous in raising the risk of prediabetes, studies show. "Being overweight is known to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, but this study shows that not all fat is equal: where any excess fat is stored in the body has a big impact on disease risk," says Professor Mark McCarthy, University of Oxford.
If you're overweight or obese, even minor weight loss can help lower the risk of getting prediabetes, experts say. "If you have prediabetes, losing a small amount of weight if you're overweight and getting regular physical activity can lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes," the CDC advises. "A small amount of weight loss means around 5% to 7% of your body weight, just 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person."
Regular exercise is important for lowering the risk of prediabetes. "Even if you don't lose weight, exercise will make you stronger and healthier," says endocrinologist Douglas Zlock, MD, medical director of the diabetes center at John Muir Health. "Healthy habits can definitely postpone the onset of diabetes even if they don't prevent it."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
There is evidence that stress can impact blood sugar control, helping raise the risk of prediabetes. "Most people with type 2 diabetes know the importance of exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and getting plenty of rest," says Dr. Joshua J. Joseph, endocrinologist at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. "But stress relief is a crucial and often forgotten component of diabetes management. Whether it's a yoga class, taking a walk or reading a book, finding ways to lower your stress level is important to everyone's overall health, especially for those with type 2 diabetes."

Jaheim Oatis praised by team for massive weight loss and effective play – Touchdown Alabama Magazine

When Jaheim Oatis originally committed to Alabama he weighed in at 416-pounds. His size was a reason why the Crimson Tide valued him as a four-star recruit, but it was clear that he would need to put in some work to get down to a more manageable weight if he was looking to contribute.
But just a few months following his December commitment to the program and Oatis accepted and excelled with the new challenge.
The Columbia, Miss., native kept fans updated with his weight loss journey throughout and recently revealed that hes down 74 pounds. His commitment to improving his body is something the staff has been very pleased to see during his brief time at Alabama with defensive coordinator Pete Golding raving about his progress.
To see his transformation over a four-year period, because Jaheim first came to camp here in eighth grade and he got an offer in eighth grade, Golding said on Sunday. Obviously, you could see spurts on tape throughout his high school career that he could be really special. And you could see a lot of plays where hes taking a play off. I was like, OK, well, thats gonna get us beat.
So the most exciting thing for me with Jaheim, hes always been a great kid, but when he accepted to come to Alabama, he knew what it was going to take. He knew it was going to be hard. He could have gone to a lot of other places where he wouldnt be asked to do what he would be asked to do here.
He knew weight was the biggest thing, was what we had to focus on, and that ended up being one of the biggest decisions to come was the nutrition with Miss Amy (Bragg), the strength and conditioning, to develop him and get him down to where he needed to be to play good, winning football. And hes done an unbelievable job of that. So Im excited about him.
The overall weight loss on Alabamas roster has been a positive for the entire staff as Nick Saban applauded the efforts of strength coach David Ballou and Alabamas director of performance nutrition Amy Bragg.
I am pleased with several of our guys, Saban said. Weve almost eliminated a lot of weight issues, which come from a scientific approach. Not me looking at a guy and saying he needs to lose 10 pounds but a muscle mass, body fat correlation that helps a guy be more efficient. And Im pleased with the way a lot of our big guys have sort of got that into balance.
I think Miss Amy does a really good job of helping guys. And again, it goes back to the kind of choices and decisions you make about what you eat, when you eat it, how much you eat of certain things that can create the kind of increase of muscle mass, decrease of body fat, that makes you a more efficient player. When I say efficient, Im not talking about your ability to do something once. Im talking about your ability to sustain it for 40-50 plays in a game at the same high level.
Those guys have done a good job. I think its contributing to them being better football players. And Im pretty pleased with the overall team improvements that weve made from that standpoint, as well as explosive movements and speed. I think Dave Ballou and his group have done a really good job of motivating the players to work hard in some of those areas, which hopefully will be helpful on the field.
Like Saban said the adjustment of his body weight has appeared to translate to success early on the field for Oatis who has added new aspects to his game. As Alabama looks for an interior pass rush, Oatis has shown to be capable of potentially contributing as he moves much better than his current weight would suggest.
Believe it or not, Jaheim has got a lot more wiggle than yall are gonna think hes got, Golding said. So hes a guy internally that if you one guy on him, good luck.
The Crimson Tides top defensive player Will Anderson has also been somebody impressed by Oatis performance at practice and willingness to change his body. While studying practice film, Anderson admitted during his media availability, that he gets distracted sometimes by what the big man does in the middle of the defense.
Im very excited about Jaheim, Anderson said on Monday. Hes great. He comes to work every day. Hes a hard worker and you know a lot of big guys, they would complain about being that big and having to lose that type of weight. But he came here, head down, worked hard, lost the weight. Hes moving good.
For a guy like that size to move like that, its crazy. Sometimes, I get distracted watching film, watching him take on blocks. Its like a steel wall like hes not moving.
Alabama still has 14 fall camp sessions and two scrimmages to go before game week preparation begins for Utah State. But Oatis commitment to losing weight along with his impressive play up front could potentially position him to be a breakthrough freshman for this Alabama defense.

A hot bowl of soup in monsoon is the perfect way to warm you up on a rainy day and make you feel good about life. A perfect starter, a nutritious mid-meal snack, and a light dinner option, a bowl of soup is for every season and can be enjoyed at any time of the day to satiate your cravings and keep you full. Fitness enthusiasts with hectic routines can definitely trust this one-pot meal to lose weight in a healthy way. (Also read: Monsoon recipes: 5 delicious soups and beverages to have during rainy season)
All you have to do is buy the seasonal veggies, combine them with tofu or paneer, and sprinkle your choice of spices and herbs to add flavour and nutrition to your bowl.
"Soups are usually perceived boring but with a hint of creativity you can pack in nutrients and antioxidants specially in monsoon for your comfort soup bowl," says nutritionist Lovneet Batra in her recent Instagram post listing all the benefits of soups in monsoon season.
Here are reasons why homemade soups can help in monsoon:
Great way to add vegetables before your meal to avoid glucose spikes
In monsoon its advisable to avoid salads and uncooked veggies. Now soup is a great way to start your meal that packs in fibre and reduces glucose spikes. In fact, prepared with the right ingredients (vegetables + enough protein + some carbs), soup can be a truly healthy dish and be considered as a complete meal.
Keep you hydrated
During monsoon, its not uncommon to drink less than you need. But while you may not be hot and sweaty, you still lose fluid through daily activities. Since soups are mostly liquid, theyre a great way to stay hydrated and full.
Give your immune system a boost
Monsoon brings a host of infections and soups are a great antidote for times when you are sick. Freshly prepared vegetable soups with seasonings like ginger and black pepper stop certain white blood cells neutrophils from congregating and causing inflammation which in turn triggers the body to produce mucus. It also thins mucus effectively.
Can reduce hunger pangs
Soup may reduce hunger and increase fullness. This may be due the fibre present (through vegetables/beans). Fibre is known to increase feelings of fullness by delaying gastric emptying and increasing stomach leads to your stomach being fuller for longer, which translates to reduced hunger. It also increases insulin sensitivity.
