‘Why I Opened The First LGBTQ Gym In The Nation’ – Women’s Health
I played college basketball for Dominican University of California, so fitness was always part of my life. But when I stopped playing, I gained 70 pounds. I went from a college athlete to weighing 250 pounds by graduation.
I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but I did know I wanted to lose weight. So the following summer, I started working out at a local gym. I became friends with the manager, who asked if I'd consider being a trainer thereI had a degree in exercise and sports medicine and I spoke Spanish, which were two things they were looking for. He said, "I can hire you, but you have to show weight loss in three months" (which, yes, was absolutely crazy).
In the beginning, I had no clients. But as I started to lose the weight I had gainedand transform my body in front of everyone at the gymsuddenly, there was a two-month waitlist to train with me.
When I was training at that gym, I was already out as a gay woman, but I "passed" as straight. And I had the same shitty experience most femme-presenting women have with creepy guys at the gym. But society tolerated it, so I tolerated it. I figured I'd deal with the dicks at the gym, and that's just how it is.
As time went on, I cut my hair and started to present more masculine. The weight room started to feel like a pissing contest with the guys, and I didn't feel welcome with the women in the locker room. I was uncomfortable because of how uncomfortable people were being around me.
It finally reached a point where I just stopped going to the gym to work out. I would go in to train my clients, then I would work out at home or play basketball at the park. I thought, "I can't be the only queer person having a shitty gym experience."
I mean, think about transgender people: They're proven more likely to experience physical or sexual violence. For them, it's not even about being uncomfortable at the gymit's, "Am I going to get jumped or raped in the locker room?" No one is more committed to transforming their body than a trans person is, and they don't have anywhere to do that safely.
When I started searching online for an inclusive, safe space to work out, all the search results that came up were related to porn. That was where the seed was planted in my mind to start my own gym.
As my career developed at the gym and I was working my way up to district management, I got to learn more about the business side of things. I quit my job during the 2008 economic crisis and went back to school to get my MBA. I knew I wanted my business to be some sort of gay gymsomething tailored to us. When I opened The Queer Gym in Oakland, California, during my second semester of grad school, it was the first LGBTQ gym in the nation.
Our mission at The Queer Gym is to create "happy, healthy homos." There are gender-neutral bathrooms, no mirrors, and all of our trainers take LGBTQI+ sensitivity training. We offer tailored training specifically for trans people preparing for gender confirmation surgery, and host social events for our community to get to know each other.

As The Queer Gym comes up on its 10th anniversary this month, I'm thinking about the next 10 years. One thing I've realized is that you've got to be batshit crazy to start a businessand in order to keep it open, you need vulnerability. In any business, you grow the business by growing the people, and to grow the people, you need to not be a dick. So my goal is to help other queer or trans trainers who want to replicate what we do get started.
When the COVID-19 crisis hit, we transitioned all of our clients to an online formatand now that our community is more accessible, we have nearly doubled in size. Going digital allows us to expand our mission beyond the 4-mile radius of the gym and to start coaching others to do this, too. I want to start creating "happy, healthy, wealthy homos"because economics is a part of wellness, and it's something that often the queer community gets excluded from.
I'm so proud of what we've accomplished, but the coolest thing is that now, when someone Googles "queer gym," they don't get porn. We made it a thing.

Everything You Need to Know About the 75 Hard Challenge Trending on TikTok – Cosmopolitan

If you're on TikTok, it's highly likely your feed has served up a friend or influencer doing something called the 75 Hard Challenge. The hashtags #75HardChallenge and #75Hard have more than 31 million views, collectively.*
And while questionable weight loss trends are not new (sup, Keto diet, Whole30 recipes, and intermittent fasting?), this 75-day plan created by motivational speaker, podcaster, author, and supplement company owner Andy Frisella is going viral for all of the wrong reasons.
In March 2019, Frisella, who is not a certified trainer, dietitian, or licensed clinical therapist, introduced the concept of the 75 Hard Challenge on his podcast, Real AF, suggesting that it's a way to change your life for the better and lose weight "I've spent more than twenty years figuring out how to master mental toughness (sic) and I'm putting everything I've learned into a program I call 75HARD," he writes in the episode notes.
On his website, Frisella writes that 75 Hard is "NOT A REGULAR FITNESS PROGRAM (sic)," Rather, it's a "MENTAL TOUGHNESS PROGRAM," which he is qualified to teach based on his "20 years of intensive study and real-life experience." He does not reference any health, fitness, or therapy courses.

The basic principles of his challenge include:
Honestly, yes. Besides the seemingly arbitrary rules, there are many other reasons to be worried about the impact Frisella's challenge can have on your physical and mental health.
For starters, following a "diet" for 75 days can mean different things to different people. While some may decide that their "diet" is limiting how much takeout they order, others might take it upon themselves to cut out entire food groupsespecially if their motivation to do the challenge is to lose weight.

That can set you up for a disordered cycle of bingeing and restriction.
Diets that severely restrict food often result in the creation of a negative relationship between individuals and how they nourish themselves, says Ali. It works like this: When you categorize foods as "bad" or "cheat foods" and avoid them, you may crave those foods more intensely. And once you eat them, "you will likely overindulge and subsequently drown in guilt and shame for having consumed so much of it," says Ali. That can set you up for a disordered cycle of bingeing and restriction.
What's worse: Extremely restrictive eating means you may never actually learn healthy eating habits or honor your bodys desires, says Ali.
Then there are the fitness rules that don't take into account your underlying health conditions, previous injuries, or current fitness levels. Exercising for 90 minutes a day, with 45 minutes spent outside regardless of the temp, is not safe for everyone.
And, like the diet rules, the fitness recommendations are basically a choose your own adventure. That means some might take it upon themselves to go HAM with burpees, cardio, strength, or workouts they've never tried before. Which, yeah, is super problematic.
The workout plan is so non-specific that youre at great risk for injury, confirms Albert R. Matheny, registered dietitian, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and owner of the SoHo Strength Lab in New York City. And, for a lot of people, working out twice a day is too much too fast.
Before starting any fitness plan, you should get a physical from your doctor and an assessment from an actual certified personal trainer. This ensures you develop a plan that is safe, effective, and personally aligned toward your goals, says Matheny.
Oh, and it's also not sustainable, says Matheny. Workout routines are best when you can gradually increase what youre doing every week. But doing the same thing every day for 75 days can get extremely monotonous and you may lose motivation fast or just burn out, says Matheny. If the only thing that's motivating you is your daily "progress" picture, that's a major problem too.
Though the plan is meant to improve your "mental toughness," this challenge is more detrimental to your mental health than it is helpful, says Ali.

If you believe (as Frisella suggests) that success only looks like completing a laundry list of random, time-consuming activities, when you cant complete them, you might see yourself as a failure. If the ability, or lack thereof, to stick to a highly prescriptive plan for 75 days is held out as a measure of mental health, anyone following this diet who does anything less than what the plan details may inaccurately believe that she is weak or that her mental health quotient is low, says Ali. This can lead to feelings of self deprecation and an inability to appreciate other measures of progress towards better emotional health.
In a 2017 interview with Forbes covering Frisella's use of social media to earn 100 million dollars in sales for his supplement company, he told reporters: "When I first started posting things [for my company] online, I looked at all our competitors and all they were posting were pictures of protein powder. I thought that was so boring, and I wanted to do something different, so I catered our content around motivation instead, the lifestyle our customers wanted to live," said Frisella.
And this may be just another non-boring, motivational way Frisella aims to gain more sales, even if the plan is totally free.
"Hes trying to sell you something," says Matheny. The goal of the 75 Hard Challenge isn't to improve your mental toughness, it's to motivate you to unconsciously spread his name, his brand, and his supplement company to your friends. TL;DR: Hes pyramid scheming us, fam.

1. Not planning your meals
Here's what happens when you fail to plan your meals. You'll be eating at any time of the day. Imagine finding a packet of chips and downing it, followed by eggs and the yogurt you just saw on top of the fridge.
If you are trying to lose weight, such a habit is going to work against you. Plan your meals into portions and have specific times when you eat. It will guide you, preventing you from eating when you should not.
2. Eating in your bedroom
Don't we all love the comfort of eating when under a warm blanket, with our favorite movie playing? This may sound and feel cozy, but it's a habit that you don't want to adapt into your lifestyle.

4. Junk food indulgence
Indeed, junk food is sweet. Packed with sugars and others fatty juices all over, it can get hard to say no. It's also fast food and involves less preparation time.

This is the type of question some adults are asking themselves as they struggle through the darkness of losing a job to the pandemic.
Some never realized how tied their identities were to their careers until they lost them. They feel lost mentally and emotionally, as if theyre experiencing a bad breakup. The present is surreal, the future is uncertain, and theyre unsure how to define themselves.
Christa Black, a freelance copywriter from Ashland, Kentucky, said her work shaped her identity.
I finally felt like a real writer, because after several years of trying, I was actually being paid to do what I enjoyed and was good at, she said. I started to feel less like an artist and more like a professional.'
But when the pandemic hit, the work faded away. Blacks income decreased to little to none. She soon felt that she had lost her identity, that she was no longer a professional and that she didnt fit in with the creative community from which she had come.
That might be because sudden unemployment is a threat to narrative identity, said Jonathan Adler, a professor of psychology who specializes in identity and narrative psychology at the Olin College of Engineering in Massachusetts.
Identity is the story of our lives that weaves together the way we reconstruct our past, make sense of the present and anticipate our future, he said.
That narrative identity is the confluence of you and the culture in which you live. We grow up in a sea of stories about what a typical lifes journey looks like and what moments were supposed to hold onto, Adler said, so we take the templates available to us and tailor our experiences to those master narratives.
We use our stories as the foundation for everything else that we do, Adler said. So when you rock the foundation, everything else on top of that crumbles.
Through some inner work, however, you can take back your worth.
For some, jobs provide merely a paycheck. For others, occupations also supply a sense of meaning that holds weight when they think about their sense of selves.
Our perpetually on the grind culture defines who we are by what we do for work.
The first thing we ask when we meet a new person is, What do you do for a living?' said Nicole Hind, an Australia-based psychotherapist behind the online community, blog and practice Unveiled Stories.
Its as though we equate goodness with work when in fact goodness is so much more than that. Its important to note that this is particular to our modern industrialized society: the idea that work is all of who we are and that we are not worthy humans if we dont work.
Additionally, people who feel motivated and engaged by and passionate about their work might have experienced psychological benefits from finding their calling, Adler said.
In the idealized college-job-promotion-passion trajectory, becoming unemployed isnt part of the vision. All of a sudden the end is totally open and uncertain, Adler said.
Our narrative identities serve two additional functions that make us feel good. They provide a sense of unity, so that we feel we are the same people over time. They also provide a sense of purpose, so we know the meaning of what were doing and what our lives are about.
People suddenly faced with job loss are now challenged by a story with a cliffhanger and interrupted senses of unity and purpose all of which can lead to anxiety, depression and anger.
Finding your identity begins with questioning yourself about three themes that construct life stories and tend to be the strongest predictors of well-being, Adler said.
Its not so much what happens to you [that matters]; its how you tell the story of what happens to you, Adler said.
The first is agency, a characteristic of the main character in your story (which is you). Maybe your effectiveness at your job provided your sense of agency. Though no one is in complete control, how much are you in the drivers seat of your life versus batted around by the whims of external forces?
Give yourself the space to grieve the losses, Hind instructed.
Dont rush into proclaiming why youre stronger because of it. Instead, acknowledge what youre feeling physically, emotionally and mentally. Recall positive moments, too: the times when you advocated for what you believed in or hit a goal.
People who do whats called exploratory processing which means deeply trying to make sense of their experience before creating a redemption sequence at the end actually do better than the people who just do redemption without exploring the challenge, Adler said.
Then find something else to prioritize, like a new venture or hobby. Revisit your core values and what really matters: What parts of your job were important to you? What fueled your passion? How can you express those during this period?
You can stay invested in those values whether youre employed or not, Adler said.
For example, Black, the freelance copywriter, has found her roots again in creative writing. It has helped me get back in touch with my creativity and given me something enjoyable to focus on while I emotionally recover from everything that came along with the pandemic and its fallout, she said.
In this way, the underlying value of her job might be fulfilled.
Figure out your own definition of success, Hind said. What do you admire about your role models? Is it their success or their skills, compassion, kindness or wisdom?
And our stories arent just about ourselves. Communion, secondly, entails a sense of being connected to, nurturing and feeling cared for by quality relationships. Engage with the connections that matter to you.
Step away from job as being the only and step towards appreciating [yourself] and others for everything: the way you take care of someone or the meal you cooked today, Hind said. What [do] my everyday life, my interactions and my values say about who I am?
Taking action and finding community foster the growth leading to redemption stories that start out bad but end well.

Reclaiming your identity requires both a quick shift in mindset and a journey of changing your thought patterns and behaviors just like setting an intention to lose weight, Adler said.
Thats something that takes place over time, but it actually happens every moment of every day. You cant just diet and exercise on the weekends, he explained. Changing your narrative identity is like that its a cumulative process that builds up over time, but the intention is something you do in the here and now every day.

Its been reported that Adele used the Sirtfood Diet to shed the pounds, a diet formulated by two celebrity nutritionists.
The diet plan relies on the idea of turning on your skinny gene by focusing on foods that increase levels of a specific protein in the body that helps to regulate metabolism.
The proteins are called sirtuins (SIRTs), and so the founders named the foods containing them sirtfoods as part of their revolutionary plan.
The successful diet plan has been outlined in the founders book, and promises that you can lose as much as seven pounds in seven days.

The best snack according to the Sirtfood pros is a portion of nuts, which have plenty of health benefits.
Nuts are high in healthy fats, as well as being a source of protein, fibre, magnesium and vitamin E.
In fact, some studies have even shown that they can help you to live longer, as they can help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
The Sirtfood Diet shared the advice on their Instagram page, with the caption:
The health benefits of nuts? Where do you even start? A true champion food linked to reduced body weight and for slashing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
They then shared a recipe to add a bit more flavour to walnuts, pecans and cashews for those who are following the healthy diet plan.
And the ultimate snack food? Its hard to argue with that. So to bring a bit of a flavour kick, why not give these tasty Cajun spiced nuts a try?
250g mix of walnuts, pecans and cashews
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp chilli powder
Heat the oven to 160 degrees centigrade/gas mark three.
Mix all the spices together and combine with the nuts and oil. Place the nuts in a single layer on a roasting tray and roast for 25-30 mins.
Tip the toasted nuts into a bowl to cool."

The ninth annual Global Wellness Day took place on June 13, 2020, and it did not disappoint. Each year, the annual event focuses on mental health, nutrition, exercise, and wellbeing with the motto, "One day can change your whole life."
Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Global Wellness Day took place virtually with a 24-hour live stream offering wellness-related events that included presentation, workouts, meditations, and other fun events hosted by experts from all around the world.
Here are three healthy eating tips from Global Wellness Day ambassadors.
Adedamola Ladejobi, certified personal nutritionist and weight loss expert, wants us to know that we are what we eatliterally.
After suffering from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity, Ladejobi decided to make healthy changes in her diet and exercise routine to lose weight. It was transformational for her in multiple ways, including improving her health and contributing to weight loss. "I started to view food as medicine," she said.
"Your food is not just about weight loss or weight gain. You food literally dictates everything that goes on with your body," she said, adding that we need to focus not only on calorie intake, but also on macronutrients and micronutrients.
"We need to stop seeing food as just calories alone," she said. "Whatever you put in body sends signal to your brain and will also give you energy. So whatever you eat determines whether you have a great amount of energy on a daily basis or whether you're going to be weak all the time and suffer from fatigue."

Ladejobi said that what we eat also has a great impact on our mental health, too. "We do need to eat certain foods and one of these type of foods is healthy fats and getting good sources vitamin D," she said, adding that vitamin D is great for stress relief and calming the nervous system.
Especially following the coronavirus pandemic, Ladejobi said we need to focus on foods that can help our mental health, including foods that are rich in potassium, magnesium, and vitamin b6. She also said guava leaf and chamomile tea also help reduce stress and help with sleep. Lastly, avoid white sugar or anything with a long shelf life. "Whenever you're eating, ask yourself, are you feeding disease or are you fighting disease?" she asked. Some food for thought!
"If ever there was a time when making conscious choices for your health mattes, this is it," said Gloria Treister, H.H.P., founder of Wellness Evolution and Global Wellness Day ambassador, drawing on the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think most people understand what wellness is, but I think what's missing with wellness today is the 'why,'" she said. "Every day we make decisions. Each and every one of these decisions is either lead you in the direction of developing good health or towards developing poor health."
"When you have poor health, you have low energy, you're not eating right, and you're quality of life is not so good," she continued. "When you're developing wellness, you're optimally functioning, so you have more energy, you feel better, you're exercising, you're eating right, you're managing your stress, and you have fine tune biochemistry."
Treister said that health is cumulative, and the top ten global causes of death from the World Health Organization (WHO) includes heart disease, stroke, respiratory problems, diabetes, and dementia. "But is that what's really killing us? Or is the actual cause of death the lifestyle behaviors that lead up to those diseases?" she asked, referring to dietary risks, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, sugar intake, alcohol abuse, and smoking. "All of those things are lifestyle behaviors that we have control over, and we have the power to stop that."

"In my view, wellness all encompassing holistic approaching. It's more than a physical fitness program, it's more than nutrition, and it's more than taking a pill or vitamins," she said. "Wellness takes into account the whole person." Treister said physical health, happiness, having a sense of purpose, managing stress, spirituality, community, and having a good family unit are all principles of Global Wellness Day.
Treister also highlighted the role of prevention through healthy eating. "I want you to eat like your life depends on it, because it does," she said. Treister recommends eating fresh, local, organic foods when possible and cutting out sugar, gluten, and dairy. "All your body is looking for is homeostasis," she said. "In medicine, that's just another word for balance."
Our bodies are like giant computers, continuously sending out and responding to various signals. Board certified family physician and functional medicine doctor Tammy Gutierrez, M.D., said that the body is a healing machine that is striving for balance in a complex dance of biology, chemistry, and physics. "We need to understand that dance and support it if we want to be truly well."
"Balance and homeostasis are what wellness really is," Gutierrez said. "Living is a constant push and pull between things that cause damage or inflammation and things that clean up the mess and help us heal. If we have enough internal resources to clean up our internal mess quickly, then we feel healthy and well."
Gutierrez said that every single choice we makesmall or bigimpacts our experience of homeostasis. "By the time most adults have turned 30 or 40, we've often spent up our cleaning supply, so we have fewer resources to spend on healing," she said. "Because the body is such an amazing healing machine, any time you have a chronic problem, it means that something is in the way disrupting the natural healing process."

Typically, Gutierrez said a chronic illness develops due to an ongoing infection or the body is lacking the materials or energy to do the repairs, such as nutrients or sleep.
"You need to remember that you and your body are a team working together, not against one another," she said. "Unfortunately, many of us have lost sight of how to communicate internally with ourselves. Your body sends you messages all day long, usually in the form of feelings or symptoms, but we are often taught to stay focused on our work and what society expects for us. And we learn at a very young age to tune out."
Gutierrez said that if we can learn to listen to the messages that our bodies send early on, then we can restore balance much more quickly and avoid the troublesome problems like chronic illness or other conditions later on in life.
We can communicate back with our bodies by eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, exercising, and avoiding exposure to toxins. "The health choices we make each day are how we communicate with our bodies. If you are constantly staying offensive things to your body in the form of junk food, smoking, or alcohol, sooner or later going to get a response back you don't like."
Gutierrez recommends organizing the types of choices we can make based on the Functional Medicine Model of Health, which means aiming for balancing with sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management, and relationships in our lives. "Understand that wellness is a journey, not a destination," she said. "Only you can choose where to step next."
