Daily Mail A mother of two has shed 129 lbs. and given up alcohol for good after depression caused her to binge drink and feast on fast food every day.
Kassidy Riekens, 28, from Wyoming, started gaining weight in 2010, less than five years before she became pregnant with her first child in 2014.
At the time, she admits she didn't take into account what she was putting into her body and would drink alcohol, eat fast food and smoke cigarettes every day to cope with her depression.

Kassidy would binge on alcohol most nights to "mask her feelings." Her sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits caused her to peak at 260 lbs. after she gave birth to her daughter in 2014.

Two weeks after delivering her child, the 28-year-old decided it was time to change her lifestyle once and for all. "What brought on my weight gain was terrible food choices, drinking alcohol, and neglecting exercise," Kassidy said.
"It was a cycle that I was stuck in. I did the same thing every single day. I would eat fast food and junk, get drunk at night, and sit around doing nothing with myself. I was extremely unhealthy. I smoked cigarettes and didn't care one bit what I was consuming and putting inside my body," she said.

Kassidy began exercising every day by going for walks, running and keeping active. She also changed her eating habits and started making better food choices, causing her to lose a total of 129 lbs. Since giving birth to her second daughter, Kassidy now weighs 144 lbs. and feels better than ever.
Kassidy is now sober and has quit drinking for good. "It feels amazing being sober. My drinking was getting out of control. I was leaning on alcohol to mask my depression, mask my feelings, mask my physical pain, and mask the world," she said.

"I was drinking often which is terrible for you not only physically but mentally too," Kassidy said. "I was never clear-headed and constantly asking for forgiveness when I would mess up, which was often.
"I didn't ever want my kids to see me act like that or my husband having to take care of me while drinking. It was embarrassing and not who I wanted to be. So, I quit cold turkey," she said.
"I want others to realize that despite the struggles we are constantly facing, it is possible to succeed at something if you put your mind to it," said Kassidy.

TLCs popular docu-series My 600-lb Life had recently aired its latest season at the beginning of 2020. The eighth season featured around 15 clinically obese patients looking to shed weight and regain their health. The show had one of its best runs with the most successful stories and inspired people worldwide. John and Lonnie were two such patients whose grit and determination were fiercely applauded! The brothers not only lost weight on the show but also stayed committed to the process after the filming wrapped up.
Lonnie, 35 years old, and John, 34 years old, belonged to different cities in Texas. The two jointly made the decision to travel to Houston and enroll in Dr. Nows weight-loss program. The duo opened up about their heartbreaking journey and what exactly triggered their addiction to food.
By the time the brothers were around ten years of age, both of them were around 200-lbs. This happened due to their mothers remarriage. Their step-father ill-treated the duo, which in turn led them to search for safety and comfort in food. Another issue that caused their addiction to spiral out of control was when Lonnie came out as gay as a teenager. His mother was a religious and conservative woman who had raised her children the same way and chose to ignore the revelation. John, too, couldnt process the information at that time. This made Lonnie withdraw into his shell and food helped him cope with his depression. John took to food as well as a means to deal with the growing distance between him and his brother.
But the duo soon realized the consequences of their weight gain. After joining Dr. Nows program, they worked together and motivated each other. Both of them admitted that the process was extremely challenging and not for the faint-hearted. The changes in diet and inclusions of exercise regimes made the journey tougher than they had expected. By the end of 12 months, Lonnie, who had weighed 612.7 lbs, managed to lose 245 lbs and came down to 368 lbs. John, who had weighed 686.5 lbs, lost 294 lbs and came down to 393 lbs.
John and Lonnie are back home and doing extremely well. The brothers have finally mended their relationship and are closer than ever, thanks to the program. Both of them had shared in recent interviews that they have been sticking to their diets, eating healthy, and staying active.
Lonnie also shared that he and John call each other daily for chit-chat and also to keep track of their daily progress. John added that he is now able to play ball with his son and spending time with his family has become easier. The duo emphasized on the fact that one should never give up. They feel confident and worthy again. This is definitely reflected in Johns Facebook post.
While Lonnie is keeping a low-profile these days, John has made a public Facebook page. He doesnt update it much but he recently uploaded a picture of him and Lonnie, and the two definitely look slimmer and healthier! The brothers have also been hosting live sessions and answering fan questions about fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle.

However, this sudden shift in routine needs to be handled carefully since our bodies are not used to this lifestyle.
Apart from spiritual advantages, fasting offers several health benefits. However, depending on ones health, every individual should adapt to this routine in their own way.
Several weeks before the holy month, people began circulating health tips on social media, including hints on weight loss, detoxification, ways to fight fatigue and dealing with bad breath.
Experts frequently warn people against blindly following online tips because of the health risk. In many cases, these suggestions lack scientific proof, and are accompanied by exaggerated claims and testimonials.
Arab News caught up with some health experts to discuss common misconceptions during Ramadan and asked them to provide helpful tips for healthy fasting.
People often view Ramadan as a chance to lose weight because tgheir food intake is lower than usual.
Dr. Mohannad Badghaish, a senior registrar in internal medicine, agrees that fasting can help shed extra weight and offers several guidelines.
Eat three balanced meals a day, including breakfast, dinner and sahoor. Each meal should consist of 30 percent protein, 15-20 percent fat and 50 percent carbohydrates, while also maintaining daily workout, he said.
Clinical and sports dietitian Sundos Malaikah advises against aiming for rapid weight loss, suggesting a gradual behavioral change that can be maintained during and after Ramadan.
Weight that is quickly lost will most probably be quickly regained. It is scientifically proven that such diets often fail. I always try to promote improving your relationship with food first, learning about hunger and satiety cues, while gradually changing eating behavior, she told Arab News.
People often adopt an all-or-nothing approach to changing habits, while taking things step by step is more sustainable and healthier, Malaikah said.
She suggests people avoid eating processed foods and rely on natural sources.
According to Malaikah, weight loss is simple if a person eats natural food and makes sure their food intake matches their energy needs.
Associating weight loss with less food is inaccurate, she said.
In a time where many people are worried about their health due to the coronavirus threat, fasting can help improve health when done properly.
However, an abundance of food and sweets not only prevents people from gaining the health benefits but also goes against the spiritual value of Ramadan.
Our immune system is quite complex and very powerful. There are no individual foods that will make it stronger. Unfortunately, that is a misconception. We can boost its fighting abilities by providing the right environment, which is staying physically active, getting enough high-quality sleep, managing stress and eating well, she said.
Badghaish also warned that excessive consumption of food has a negative impact on health and goes against Islamic teaching.
The Prophet Muhammad said: A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one-third of food, one-third for drink and one-third for air, he said.
Exercise is another important factor in weight loss, but there are conflicting opinions on the best time to work out during Ramadan and if it is wise to exercise while fasting.
Badghaish said that there is no harm in exercising while fasting, but for non-diabetics the best time to exercise is 60 to 90 minutes before breakfast/iftar.
Malaikah said that the benefits of exercising on an empty stomach are often exaggerated.
The claim we often hear is that our body is using our fat store for fuel. While that may be true, it doesnt mean fat loss. My body is using my fat stores for energy all the time simply because thats how it works. Using fat doesnt equate with losing fat, she said.
Therefore, the best time for a workout is whenever you can, and to lose weight you should watch your food intake.
Malaikah also offered a warning on detoxification diets or meals.
If our body had toxins in it, we would be lying in a hospital. Our body is equipped with strong mechanisms that detoxify and remove any harmful substances. No green juice will do that for you. Unfortunately, a lot of marketing tries to sell ideas that dont have much scientific evidence, she said.
If you want to make your body work at its best, do at least 150 minutes of cardio exercise during a week along with resistance exercises twice a week, and eat well and mindfully. Our bodies usually tell us when to stop eating and when to start. If we listened instead of continuing to eat while ignoring all these cues, our health would be better.
Many people usually experience headaches, fatigue, difficulties concentrating or doing our daily work while fasting, especially during the first days of Ramadan. Badghaish said that the main reason for these symptoms is insufficient compensation for the lost water and fluids from the body.
A man should drink about three liters of water per day, while a woman should drink 2.5 liters, he said.
Liquids that contain sugar are not recommended.
Caffeine also speeds up water loss, so its consumption should be reduced or avoided during Ramadan.
Bad breath may result from fasting due to lack of water and food for long hours, making one feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. However, it is possible to control the problem.
Malaikah said that certain types of food, such as spices, garlic and onions, can affect breath.
Maintaining proper oral hygiene helps brushing our teeth at least twice per day, using a mouthwash and flossing on a daily basis. Additionally, eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day often helps as well, she said.
Breath odor can be a sign of dental or gastrointestinal problems that might need expert help.
Among the causes of bad breath with the digestive tract are oesophageal reflux, high blood sugar and liver failure, Badghaish said.
While fasting is obligatory for all healthy adult Muslims, there are exemptions for those who are ill or whose health could be affected by fasting, for example, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with certain health conditions.

In October 2018, I transitioned to a new job and had to buy short-term health insurance. To my horror, I almost didnt qualify because of my weight250 pounds at the time. I was overwhelmed with shame, embarrassment, and resignation, and I figured it meant I would be overweight forever.
I dont want to knock body-positivity movements, because I think its important to love the skin youre in. I tried accepting myself at 250 pounds, but ultimately, I just felt defeated and stuck.
When I was home in Minnesota with family for the holidays, I remember how big I felt, and I decided I wanted 2019 to be a different. It was the year to make a change.
After leaving, I unfortunately contracted a bad case of the flu. In those 10 days, I ended up losing maybe 20 pounds. It wasnt the way I planned to start my weight loss, but I used it as a springboard for my journey.
I started by doing bodyweight exercises with a 90 Days to Change program on Darebee, a non-profit fitness resource. The program pushed a 20- to 30-minute workout daily for 90 days, and it allowed me to log my workouts. I figured I spent at least that time every day looking at my phone, so that time could be used to work out.
Calorie counting also came into play around that time. I knew that you cant outwork a poor diet. Im not a terribly picky eater, but I learned theres a huge difference between eating to fuel your body and eating your feelings. I learned its important to feel my feelings fully, instead of denying and eating them. So when I do make less healthy choices, I ask myself if Im eating because Im hungry, or if Im eating a feeling.
Focusing on short-term goals, like losing five pounds at a time, was helpful at the start as well. I also looked for non-scale victories toonot being winded, doing a pushup, things like that. Doing this, I was able to drop another 30 pounds.
When I started these workouts, I knew I was too heavy to start doing a lot of cardio without injury. But when I hit 50 pounds lost, I wanted to pick it up again. It was something that I enjoyed before college in 2009 when the freshman 15 hit me and kept going up until late 18.
With the Couch to 5K app, I safely built up my mileage starting in February 2019. I remember getting up at 4 a.m. for hour-long walks/jogs. It was amazing being out when the world was quiet, but it wasnt always easy. On days I didnt want to go out, I would say on your feet to get myself out there.
It was somewhat frustrating that I couldnt do more at first. Again, I set those small goals for myselfI would tell myself to not worry about doing running for 20 minutes straight, but instead get through the next 90 seconds. I could do anything for a minute and a half.
As many runners discover, I was able to go farther and farther as time went on. When I ran my first 5K, I felt unimaginably proud. It mustve taken me 40 minutes, but it made me want to keep going.

My running and weight loss have been getting better ever since. Less than six months after starting, I did my first half marathon. It wasnt an organized race, and I wasnt even planning to do it on the day that I did it in July 2019. I just went out and did it for fun. I had been building up for it and hoping to do it one day. I love my short-term goals, but achieving this long-term one was just amazing.
Ive been running strong ever since. My weight has gone down to 154 pounds, and Im hoping to continue to go down in 2020. Honestly, this is the best investment Ive ever made.
I do still struggle with it though. There are times I worry that clothes one day wont fit me, and that Ill fall off the wagon and gain the weight back. It was 100 percent worth doing though, and I wish I had done it sooner.
For anyone who wants to go on a similar journey, set small, achievable goals on and off the scale, and celebrate them. Identify the obstacles in your life, accept them, and come up with plans to confront and address them. Also, appreciate the people in your life who boost you up, and are your biggest cheerleaders. My partners love and support through this process was invaluable, I couldnt have done it without his support and the little nudges along the way to keep me on track.

While many of us are concerned about what our bodies might look like post lockdown (step away from the homemade Pret cookies), Britney Spears has revealed shes managed to shed the pounds.
But not because shes been particularly trying to lose weight. Turns out the cause of her quarantine weight loss is actually heartache thanks to missing her boyfriend as they self-isolate separately.
The 38-year-old singer shared a snap of herself on Instagram, rocking a long-sleeved floral crop top and revealing that shes dropped so many pounds that none of her clothes now fit.
I have been quarantining since I got back from Louisiana weeks ago So basically I havent seen my boyfriend@samasghariin what feels like a lifetime!!!! she explained in the accompanying caption.

She went on to reveal that pining for her other half seems to have had an unexpected impact in that shes slimmed down to the point where her clothes no longer fit.
Now none of my pants or shorts fit, she revealed. Guess thats what missing someone can do.

She went on to ask her followers if anyone else was experiencing the same.
And its fair to say that though some were able to relate on the missing people front, the losing weight side effect, not so much.

The Toxic singer also used her Instagram platform to inform her followers that she had accidentally burnt down her gym.

Sharing an image of her workout routine with fans on the star admitted she only had two pieces of equipment and one mirror left after the incident involving candles, which happened at the end of 2019.
It was an accident, but yes I burnt it down, she wrote in the accompanying caption. I walked past the door to the gym and flames BOOM.
She went on to say that the alarm went off and no body was hurt, but the fire had caused her to lose some equipment.
But it could be much worse so Im grateful. Pssss I like working out better outside anyways, she added.

How it works
Green tea is packed with caffeine and a type of flavonoid called catechin, which is an antioxidant.
Research suggests that both of these compounds can speed up metabolism.
Catechin combined with caffeine increases the amount of energy the body uses.

Speeding up the metabolism will help burn more calories at rest and during activity.
How much to drink
In order to burn more calories, green tea should be consumed around two to three times daily.
When making a green tea, it is suggested to bring the water to boil and then leave it to cool for around 10 minutes.
This is because the boiling water will kill the teas catechin, the chemical which can drive weight loss and other nutrients.
According to Heathline, green tea is one of the healthiest beverages on the planet.
While there is no solid evidence that drinking green tea reduces appetite, many people who have consumed the tea daily have explained that they feel less hungry throughout the day.
Green tea has repeatedly been linked to increased fat during, especially during exercise.
Exercise is also a very important aspect to losing weight and a daily exercise of around one hour is recommended to boost weight loss results.
Dr Beianart added: In fact, green tea may support weight loss in several ways: increasing thermogenesis (calorie burning), increasing fat oxidation (burning of fat for energy), reducing fat absorption, and even reducing appetite!
Along with drinking green tea, there are other ways to boost the metabolism and increase weight loss.
Green tea benefits extend beyond weight loss. It is very healthy to consume for many other reasons too.
Having a healthy breakfast in the morning will help you stay fuller for longer and jump start your metabolism.
According to the NHS, research suggests people who eat breakfast are slimmer because they tend to eat less during the day.
A healthy breakfast contributes to proper immune function, lowers cholesterol, and reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes. If you skip breakfast, you are more likely to snack more, consuming more calories by consuming less nutritious foods.
