Feast or famine: The effect of marijuana on weight – The Spokesman-Review

Your new years resolution for 2020 was to lose weight. And this time, you really are committed to making it happen.

But heres the dilemma: When trying to drop the pounds, do you stop using pot because it gives you the munchies or do you increase your intake because, for some, it acts as an appetite suppressant?

It depends, according to Dr. Jon Davis, Ph.D., assistant professor at Washington State Universitys Department of Integrative Physiology & Neuroscience.

(Cannabis potential to act as an appetite suppressant) hasnt been well studied at all. Theres not enough information to make a statement one way or the other on it, said Davis, who specializes in feeding and drug addiction at WSUs Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Program.

What Davis does know is that a lot depends on you when it comes to marijuana and its effect on body mass. Your metabolism, health, age, sex, the strain of cannabis you use, how much sleep you get, and other factors all play in to whether marijuana contributes to your personal weight loss or gain. Davis cites a 2014 study, published in the journal Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience, that looked at two subject groups who used marijuana: the general population and those with disease-based anorexia. The low-weight group gained weight while the general population group did not.

This may leave you curious if theres any truth to the old case of the munchies stereotype. Davis acknowledges that marijuana affects the mechanisms that trigger hunger in our brain and can definitely cause you to raid the pantry. He says the munchies are a delayed effect of cannabis, though.

One thing weve noticed in our lab is when you give cannabis to an animal, it doesnt immediately go over and start eating. Its not until about an hour later that they get hungry and then that only lasts two or three hours, so its a delayed effect.

Two of the main effects of marijuana use are euphoria and appetite stimulation. Davis believes euphoria initially overpowers the bodys hunger response. But once the euphoria starts to wear off, users notice that they are hungry. Only lasting a couple hours usually at most, that hunger may not initiate a large enough calorie intake to make a lasting impact on body weight.

But for chronic users of marijuana, wouldnt that pattern repeated over and over again eventually result in weight gain? Davis says cannabis use can be like alcohol use people who drink regularly are affected differently than those who drink rarely or occasionally.

Its been shown that people who use cannabis regularly have reduced receptors for cannabinoids, so a tolerance develops.

Cannabinoids are compounds found in the marijuana plant; THC and CBD being the best known. So if youre a regular consumer, you may no longer get the munchies, or to the same degree, that new or occasional users do.

While that could be good news for the waistlines of pot lovers, continued use of weed still may not be great for your health.

It definitely can impact blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyclerides (a kind of fat found in the blood stream), said Davis. A nerve called the vagus nerve controls heart rate. Stimulation of that nerve (such as with marijuana use) increases blood pressure.

While cannabis use may not make you gain weight, can it help you lose weight?

Another question with an unclear answer. Some growers are now marketing marijuana strains specifically for weight loss, usually those with tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), a lesser known cannabinoid.

While THC is known for stimulating appetite and is responsible for the munchies, THCV is believed to act as an appetite suppressant. CBD is believed to have a similar effect, only without the euphoria that comes with strains that contain THC.

Again, though, Davis stresses that there isnt enough knowledge at this time on how effective either THCV or CBD are as weight loss proponents. With cannabis still illegal at the federal level, few studies have been completed, due to a lack of both funding and time.

You have to have a Schedule 1 license to have the plant and that takes 18 months. Were built off publication and dont have the luxury of that kind of time, said Davis.

He also says that is beginning to change and WSU is one of the only labs in the world that has looked at marijuana use in conjunction with feeding.

But we still need time to understand the physiological and plant-based mechanism.

Queen Elizabeths Healthy Diet May Be The Secret To Her Longevity – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Delish

Queen Elizabeth II isnt just the United Kingdoms longest reigning monarch; shes the oldest head of state in the world. And at 94 years old, she surpassed the average life expectancy for women in the UK by a decade.

While her status undoubtedly gives her unparalleled access to the best doctors, chefs, and ingredients, shes also known to have a surprisingly simple approach to food and nutrition. Heres what you can learn from Her Majestys healthy eating habits.

Former palace chef Darren McGrady told RecipesPlus that, unlike Prince Phillip who lives to eat, Queen Elizabeth eats to live and sticks to small portion sizes, preferring four light meals instead of three larger ones.

If youve ever tried to lose weight, you know how important portion control is for your waistline: University of Cambridge researchers estimate that smaller packages and portion sizes could help us cut our daily food consumption by about 25%, and according to a report from the McKinsey Global Institute, reducing portion size is the most effective way to fight obesity. (Need help in the portion department? Check out these easy portion control tips.)

For Queen Elizabeth, that means eating every slice of chocolate cake. Shell take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake, McGrady said. As for other types of cake? The staff can eat the leftovers.

Research shows that treating yourself is an important part of a healthy, long-lasting diet. One Israeli study found that people who start their day with chocolate, cookies, or ice cream may be better able to manage cravings long-term. Cravings increase on a low-carbohydrate diet, so its better to incorporate them in a healthy way, says Daniela Jakubowicz, M.D., of the Diabetes Unit at Wolfson Medical Center at Tel Aviv University, and author of the study. Dr. Jakubowicz suggests treating yourself in the morning for the best results; her other research shows that a hearty breakfast is more beneficial to weight loss than a heavy dinner.

Story continues

The Queen likes her chocolate 60% or higher, reports Business Insider. It has to be the dark chocolate, the darker the better, McGrady confirmed. She wasnt keen on milk chocolate or white chocolate. Thats a good choice considering dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids, which may protect against heart disease and stroke, according to a Tufts University review.

The Queen is all about eating strawberries in the summer, but McGrady says she wont touch them in the winter. She absolutely does eat seasonal, he told RecipesPlus.

While eating out-of-season strawberries might not seem like a big deal, there are real benefits to following Mother Natures lead when it comes to produce. Out-of-season food travels thousands of miles before it hits store shelves, which may compromise its nutritional value. Vitamin C is particularly unstable: Research from Bangladesh found that tomatoes lose more than half their vitamin C over the course of eight days.

If you cant grow fruits and vegetables from your own garden like Queen Elizabeth does, we suggest hitting up your local farmers marketyou wont need a royal budget, either.

A heart healthy staple of the Mediterranean diet, the Queen often has smoked salmon sandwiches with her afternoon tea and a grilled fish for lunch or dinner. Do the same to keep your mind and body healthy: Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and herring have the omega-3s EPA and DHA, which can help you lower risk of heart disease, Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N., recently told Prevention. Fatty fish is also a staple of the MIND diet, which combines the best of the Mediterranean and DASH diets for research-backed dementia protection.

This wouldnt be a story about the royals without a reference to tea, would it? The Queens favorite, Earl Grey, may lower cholesterol, thanks to the flavonoids in bergamot. And thats not even mentioning the benefits of black tea in general: the tannic tea may lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of ovarian cancer, and promote weight loss. No fine china necessary.

Woman, 32, who ballooned to 350lbs because of her party-heavy lifestyle and 5000 calorie diet loses 200LBS after doctors told her she could DIE if she…

Daily Mail

Danitza credits her personal trainer for helping her lose 200 lbs.

Danitza Casas, from Scottsdale, Arizona, weighed 350 lbs. at her heaviest, having struggled with her weight throughout much of her childhood.

After being tormented with cruel nicknames like "gordita" which means chubby girl in her youth, Danitza's weight spiraled out of control during her adult years, thanks to a party-filled lifestyle and an unhealthy diet.

Then and now: Danitza Casas, 32, from Scottsdale, Arizona, went from 350lbs to 148lbs over the course of four years

"Ive always been a bigger girl ever since I was a kid," Danitza said. "Subconsciously, I believed that because I looked a certain way, I was ugly."

As Danitza got older, her issues with her weight continued to get worse in large part to her unhealthy relationship with food.

"I had to be eating over 5,000 calories on a bad day," Danitza said. "I would eat until I physically felt sick. I was classified as morbidly obese. I wanted to feel good about myself, I wanted to go and put on a dress and not feel like, 'What are people going to think?'"

While she was facing a constant struggle with her body image, she would outwardly appear to be confident and the life of the party. She admitted that sheused humor and her larger than life personality to mask her insecurities and the disgust she felt with her body.

Bad habits: Danitza said she used to turn to food for comfort and would eat 5,000 calories a day to make herself feel better

"I was always the life of the party but I felt like I had to be that loud, funny person because if not theyd be looking at my weight," she said. "At least if I was the butt of the joke I wasnt being laughed at."

Danitza began relying on food to make herself feel better and to overcome her insecurities about her weight, explaining that she would binge on treats as a means of gaining some control in her life.

"Anything fast food, anything fried, anything sweet. It was hard, your self-worth takes a toll. I didnt love myself at that time. I wanted to make myself feel better, even if it was for that moment. Even if that scoop of ice cream made me feel better in that moment. I couldnt control anything else but what I put in my body," she said, recalling how her doctor told her she was becoming morbidly obese.

Quick fixes: Danitza said she had attempted to lose weight a number of times, trying every pill and 'magic quick fix' that she came across

At her heaviest, Danitza wore a size 24, and she said shopping was a "horrible experience" for her. While her friends happily tried on trendy clothes, she was forced to shop in areas of the store designated for older women like her grandmother.

"I think the turning point for me was one night I thought I was having a heart attack and ended up going to the hospital," she recalled. "I was having an anxiety attack with a panic attack.

"I'm so young. I should be living my best life, and I'm here, thinking I'm having a heart attack. That's not how anybody should be living. I wanted to feel good about myself."

Danitza said she had attempted to lose weight a number of times, trying every pill and "magic quick fix" that she came across, but it wasn't until she started working out with her personal trainer four years ago that she saw real results.

"Beau, my trainer, was key in my transformation because he was very patient. When I met Beau, I couldn't do a single body squat without falling," she recalled.

Her friends were also incredibly supportive, and their compliments helped fuel her weight loss.It took her four years to lose 200 lbs., but she was left with excess skin on her legs, arms and face.

Danitza had surgery to remove the excess skin between her breasts, under her chest, on her stomach, and around her hips.

"I had a lot of complications from the wounds, but you know what? I would do it all over again," she insisted.

Danitza, who now weighs 148 lbs., commemorated the moment when she took all of her old clothes and "torched them" outside.

"Today I feel confident. I love myself," she said. "I feel like people see me for me and not just a big girl. I feel really proud of my accomplishments and the way I look now because I worked very hard to get where I'm at."

She hopes to inspire others, and she even offered words of encouragement for those who are struggling with obesity.

"Where you're at now is not where you're going to be forever," she said. "You are the only person standing in the way of what you want. If you want it bad enough, go get it."

My struggle with weight after pregnancy – The Standard

SUMMARY

I got married, and a few years later, I gave birth to a bouncy baby girl.

My physical appearance changed, and within a month, I could weigh a whopping 70 kg as compared to what I weighed before, which was 45kg.

"I didn't mean to gain weight. It just happened." Have you ever walked into a mall and you spot a very gorgeous dress and you just start picturing yourself wearing it? You approach the shop selling the dress you hold the dress, and the owner rushes out to sell to you only to give you an unpleasant look and angrily tells you off "Madam huwezi toshea hapo utararua iyo nguo!" Madam sorry you cannot fit in that dress; you will tear it out!

For me, weight loss is a journey. I call it a journey simply because it took me time to get to where I am today. Growing up as a child and as a teenager, I was never a chunky person; rather, I was slim and small. When I went to college, it became even worse for me because I could skip lunch most of the time, not because I wanted to but because of financial constraints, which it's normal for most of the students. Skipping lunch was one, but again, I would walk a distance to where my house was. I remember going home after I completed college, and people would give me this unpleasant look. It affected me in a away, but there is nothing I could do about how I looked.

Being a slim person, I could consume almost everything edible; junk foods, sugary drinks, and all other foodstuffs that are considered unhealthy for consumption. I got married, and a few years later, I gave birth to a bouncy baby girl. My physical appearance changed, and within a month, I could weigh a whopping 70 kg as compared to what I weighed before, which was 45kg. This really lowered my Self Esteem. When going for family outings with my family, I could not take full photos only selfies, and sometimes I would end up deleting the selfies because I saw myself being chubby. I missed my other self; I now preferred the skinny me. I remember my siblings making fun of me and calling me "msichana fupi nono round." "Short chunky round girl.

I remember one fine morning, I boarded a matatu heading to town to run some errands and while alighting the taut shouted, "Wee dere hebu simama uyu mama ashuke." I felt insulted not because he called me mama, but to me, that word mama made me feel old. After the incident, it's when I decided to start my journey to fit. I would spend most of my free time online looking for ways on how to lose weight. It's said that for you to begin weight loss, you must have a fitness coach or a mentor. For me, I followed Jane Mukami, a fitness coach online. I did the 21days of change with Jane, and the results after a month were spectacular. Since I was still breastfeeding and nursing a C-section wound and the fact that I was anxious about losing weight, I decided to check on my diet, eating healthy and eating clean that is no junk at all, avoiding carbonated drinks, drinking lots of water, and taking tea without sugar. I also did some home workouts like prank, skipping without a rope, hills to heaven, among others. It was never an easy journey. But I did it anyway.

After a month of toiling, most of my friends told me that I had changed and I looked amazing with my new look. I also loved my new look, I felt more confident, and most of my clothes could now fit me. Not all could appreciate my new me; others thought I was not okay that I was stressed but who cares? I was happy with how I looked, and that is what mattered. Within a span of one month, I was able to lose 35 pounds. I am not yet there, but I am somewhere.

She said: "If I'm being honest I'm not on plan. I would be with my dinners but I'm not on plan during the day, I'm picking at anything.

"No exercise for the last two or three weeks even. I think the most important thing for me is that I haven't touched Coca Cola.

"I think if I stay away from that then I can maintain my weight.

"Obviously I want to lose more weight but it's just so hard at the moment."

Tanya also made OT history when her partner Mark proposed to her during the series finale.

However, Tanya counts herself lucky she doesn't have to spend as much time at home as her fiance.

She said: "I count myself lucky because I'm able to leave the house and go to work so I think Mark would be the one that's driven demented more than me. He's ready to snap."

She said: "I work with a fantastic team. Before I go to work I scrub from head to toe and the minute I come from work I repeat it.

These 6 Exercises Will Help to Fix Your Posture After Days on the Couch – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Men's Health

If you're stuck inside during the coronavirus pandemic, you're probably spending the bulk of your time sitting down. That also means that you might have been the type of person who logged your work days seated at a desk before quarantine. That's all to say that you're used to planting your butt in a seat looking at a computer for hours on endwhich isn't the best thing for your posture.

Get up, get moving, and get yourself in a better position with this set of exercises from trainer Charlee Atkins, C.S.C.S., who is always eager to help guide her office working clients to better posture. She knows how tough it can be to get right, after allthe trainer was once a SoulCycle Master Instructor, so she's spent her share of time in hunched over the handlebars.

"Attention desk warriors: Are you doing these exercises?" she asks. "Let's face it, we sit at desks and look at phones all day. Here are my favorite exercises that you can do at home to help train your posture."

You don't necessarily need dumbbells to take on the workout, like Atkins uses in her demos. Try using everyday items you have around the house like water bottles or bags of salt if you don't have traditional weights handy, and focus on your form.

Perform each exercise for 45 seconds, then rest 15 seconds.

Carries - "Great for the core and posture. My favorite cue: Puff your chest out like you're walking out of the gym on chest day."

Rows - "These work you back muscles, and help to retract and depress the shoulder blades."

Story continues

Y-Raises - "Great warm-up drills to do before any upper body day. In fact, you should do these before the start of any day."

T-Raises - see above

Scapular Pushups - "Mobilize the shoulder blades."

Around The Worlds - "Use a light weight and take the arms through their full range of motion. Tip: Try the exercise kneeling to eliminate the ankle and knee joints so you can put more focus on your arms and core."

Run through the series once as a warmup for an upper body day, or three times through for a quick standalone corrective series.

Masterchefs Gregg Wallace reveals hes now UNDER 12st after 4st weight loss as he makes good choices in loc – The Sun

GREGG Wallace has revealed he now weighs less than 12 stone as he admits being at home 24/7 has helped make "good choices easier".

Masterchef judge Gregg has been placed in lockdown along with most of the country, as coronavirus continues to sweep the globe.

6

But the 55-year-old, who hit his goal weight in early April, took to Instagram to share a new picture of his slim physique, captioning the snap: "Just under 12 stone. Being at home 24/7 means good choices easier."

He has also been sharing his daily meals, posting a video on Wednesday of his zero fat yogurt, whey protein, oats, and blueberries for breakfast.

He then walked his followers through how to make a cream-free carbonara.

The TV personality overhauled his lifestyle back in 2017 and has gradually transformed his physical image ever since.

He has lost two stone, and shared his good news with fans from home.

Good morning it's 6am, I'm going to do some exercising," he said in an Instagram video for fans. I've hit my goal weight, I'm now just below 12 stone which means I've lost four stone.

Despite being in lockdown Gregg has been keeping up his regime and revealed earlier this week that his trainer has sent him exercises to keep him busy.

He said: There's no gyms, that doesn't matter, my PT Danny has sent me a five day programme.

Gregg, who was once 16 stone, previously discussed his decision to change his lifestyle, telling The Sun: "I made a conscious decision to cut down on fried and high sugar foods, as well as booze which helped me lose weight.

When I was at my biggest I was having a daily fry up, fish and chips once per week, takeaway a couple more times and drinking beer nearly every day. At first, I felt like I was missing out. But my body got used to what I was giving it and yours will too.

Gregg is currently holed up in the Kent countryside with his wife Anna and their son Sid, 11 months,

This Morning chef James Martin reveals simple trick to check whether eggs are off – Express.co.uk

A good cook knows that theyre only as good as their ingredients, but how do you know if your eggs are off? This Morning chef James Martin revealed a simple test that can help you check whether theyre fresh.

The easy hack allows you to check your eggs without breaking or wasting them, giving you an instant insight into how fresh they really are.

The test involves simply placing the egg in water in a jug or large bowl.

You can check whether an egg is in date if it hasnt got a stamp on it, by putting it in some water, Martin explained.

If it rises to the top its an old egg, if it sinks to the bottom its a new egg.

READ MORE: 'Dogs dinner' James Martin furious as he suffers 'disastrous' This Morning cooking blunder

The freshest eggs will lay on their side at the bottom of the bowl or jug.

If it sits at the bottom but upright, its still fresh but should be eaten soon, or hard-boiled.

However, if it floats to the top, it is no longer good to eat and should be thrown away.

The reason for this is that over time air passes through into the shell, as eggs are porous.

As the air between the membrane and the shell increases, the egg becomes more buoyant and floats.

The top tip was shared by Saturday Kitchen chef James Martin on Mondays show as he cooked up a delicious brunch from his home in Hampshire.

However, despite being the expert the flustered star made a few blunders when trying to serve up his poached eggs.

As Phillip and Holly watched from the studio, the chef kept trying to place poached eggs on a bed of spinach.

Want to know how to lose weight? Theres one thing thats GOT to go from your lockdown diet – T3

During lockdown weight gain is perhaps inevitable, and not necessarily the end of the world. But if you want to lose weight or at least not put on too much extra weight there is one thing you can do that is almost certain to help. It is very obvious when you think about it, and arguably not that easy, but it will give positive results, and perhaps it might not have occurred to you before.

So, you want to know how to avoid isolation weight gain at home? There is one item in a lot of people's diet that could be easily cut and would result in losing weight faster. You guessed it: the culprit is alcohol. No one needs a lecture about why alcohol is bad for your health but I think a lot of you don't realise how consuming alcohol effects your diet and your weight loss. Or your weight gain, more accurately.

If Google Trends is anything to go by, everyone seems to be having more booze than usual now that we are in full lockdown. And in the case of the UK in particular, that is saying something.

Best protein shake blender: there are brands other than Nutribullet, you know

Let's get one thing out of the way right at the beginning: the best way to lose weight is not to exercise more, but to eat less. Especially now that we have to stay indoors almost all the time, eating the same amount of food as we used to will result in us putting on weight. Cutting back on calories of any sort will help you in your weight loss battle. No news there.

There are a lot of misconceptions about alcohol and as I mentioned above, I'm not here to lecture anyone about just how bad it is to consume alcoholic beverages. Sure, some types of alcohols contain certain micronutrients (like minerals) that can be beneficial for health, but this doesn't outweigh the negative effects of these drinks.

One very important thing to realise about alcohol is that it is basically pure carbohydrate. Carbs are one of the three main macronutrients your body needs to function; the other two are lipids (fats) and protein. This doesn't mean your body needs alcohol to function, on the contrary. Drinking alcohol adds nothing to your diet, alcohol calories are just 'empty calories'.

Just how many calories, though? There are a few options that are considered 'low-calorie' drinks, like vodka and diet coke. Although diet coke can be considered free of calories (still pretty bad in every way) a double shot (50 ml) of vodka contains over 100 calories. You would have to run 10 minutes to burn off those calories and that is just one drink.

How about beer? A small bottle (12 oz/355 ml) of Goose Island IPA is 208 calories, twice as much as what's in a double shot vodka plus diet coke combo. And whoever has only one small bottle of beer when they drink? That's right, no one.

Maybe wine? A bottle (750 ml) of Cabernet Sauvignon is just under 600 calories, meaning that two medium glasses (approx. 175 ml) contain around 250-300 calories.

The best idea, of course, is to keep your alcohol consumption to the minimum. As I mentioned in the 'how to lose weight at home' article, being mindful about your diet and food/drink intake can help. Before you pour yourself another drink, ask yourself: do I want another drink? Am I bored? Is there another task I'm putting off by drinking?

Admittedly, on some occasions, especially during social gatherings, it is pretty challenging to get out of drinking at least some alcohol. When everyone is having beers and wines around you, the social pressure on you to have one too could be immense. Even in these cases, there are ways to reduce consumption.

If you are a wine drinker, have a soda spritzer instead of just a glass of wine. You would still get the sensation of having a wine in a wine glass, but you also drink plenty of water, which dilutes the alcohol and makes it easier for your body to digest it more efficiantly.

If you are more of a beer drinker, see if there are any low calorie/alcohol-free beers in stock. A bottle of alcohol-free Holstein is only 8 calories (!) and there are plenty of low-cal options out there, especially if you live in the US.

And in any case, if you drink a glass of water after you had a drink, your stomach will fill up sooner and you will feel fuller sooner, making you less likely to drink too much alcohol. It also helps with hangovers, too.
