Silver Lake family turns their house into mural with a message while home under cornavirus orders – The Daily Breeze
While Los Angeles has issued its stay-at-home order to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, a Silver Lake family is using their free time to turn their house into a giant canvas.
To draw attention to sexual assault awareness month, Ali Ferber Peters and her daughters Emilia and Zoe are painting a mural of five women of significance. The mural with a message also features lines from Camille Rainvilles poem, Be a Lady They Said.
The mural will depict Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Lupita Nyongo, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Greta Thunberg and Oprah Winfrey all wearing masks, spurred by the COVID-19 outbreak, featuring lines from Rainvilles poem.
This month is sexual awareness month and we want to do something to honor that, Zoe, 16, said. I want people to know that they are supported and its OK to talk about their stories.
The idea to paint the mural came to mind about two weeks ago after the family watched a video featuring actress Cynthia Nixon reading Rainvilles poem with a list of unrealistic demands women are told to follow.
Dont be too fat, Nixon reads in the video. Dont be too thin. Dont be too large. Dont be too small. Eat up. Slim down. Stop eating so much. Dont eat too fast. Order a salad. Dont eat carbs. Skip dessert. You need to lose weight. Fit into that dress. Go on a diet. Watch what you eat. Eat celery. Chew gum. Drink lots of water. You have to fit into those jeans. God, you look like a skeleton. Why dont you just eat?
The video gained thousands of views since it has been released earlier this year.
My girls and I each reacted to a different line from the poem, said Ferber Peters, 52. It was the seed of the idea.
About one in five women has been sexually assaulted or experienced an attempted rape at some point while one in four reported being beaten by an intimate partner, according to a recent government survey, emphasizing that the violence against remains pandemic in the U.S.
Ferber Peters said she had been thinking about the women who are forced to stay home where they dont feel safe during the virus outbreak.
She added that during the time of a hearing on a sexual assault allegation against Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh back in 2018, her lifelong friend called her and said that they had been raped.
They have never shared that with me before and it blew my mind, she said. I realized from their experience, and also from many other young women that I met, that an assault changes the trajectory of a persons life. Theres so much shame around it. And we believe that through conversation and shining light, thats how one moves forward.
With her sister Amy Ferber, Ferber Peters created a business last year Shes Birdie with a personal safety alarm designed to protect women.
Emilia, 18, said having a family project in the midst of the pandemic has helped her to connect with her neighbors who often stop by their house to take photos of the mural and offer help.
The family planned to finish their project by Sunday.
And while it has been a challenge to stay home and not be able to go out, Ferber Peters said, being isolated created an opportunity to collaborate with her daughters.
Sometimes I feel like I cant settle, I cant go out and walk around the lake, but since we started this project together, Im already nostalgic about this period being over, Ferber Peters said.

A mum-of-two has transformed her life after embarking on a huge weight loss journey to shed more than 20st.
Tanja Sproson, from Biddulph, originally wore a size 36 but after joining Slimming World five years ago, she is now is a third of the way towards her target weight.
The 51-year-old has lost more than 7st and dropped 12 dress sizes so far, but wants to lose a further 14st to reach her 10st target.
She said: I would struggle to walk from here to the next lamppost. I would need to use my asthma inhaler for walking up the stairs, sometimes having to stop half way up.
"I do ghost hunts and often wouldn't be able to keep up with everyone.
I put weight on because I was a lazy eater. I would skip meals and not eat the right food. Some days I wouldnt eat at all until the evening.
I would get up, skip breakfast, go out for the day and not eat until I got back as I wouldnt really eat out. I wouldn't eat because I wasn't hungry, but its not healthy.
Tanjas health suffered dramatically as a result of her weight, but she is now thrilled she can go into a shop and buy clothes in her size.
She said: I can now walk from my home into town and buy clothes from Sainsburys, which I wasnt able to do before.
I am buying the bigger sizes - I wear a size 24 now - but the more weight I lose, the easier buying clothes will be. Im a lot happier now that Ive lost weight.
Bread was one of Tanjas downfalls, and is something she has tried to cut from her diet on a day-to-day basis.
She said: Losing weight can be hard if you have a busy lifestyle. Ive had to cut bread out because I was eating a lot of it. Now I count everything that I eat, and dont drink as much alcohol as thats also fattening.
Tanja is currently self-isolating under the NHS and government guidelines around coronavirus.
Slimming World recently launched virtual meetings, which Tanja is attending from home.
She added: Ive bought a set of scales so that I can weigh myself at home - I really like the virtual meetings.
I love my Slimming World group and the community feel. We are a little family, and its amazing. Diane, my consultant, is my sister-in-law - I introduced her to Slimming World and now shes coaching me!
For me, Slimming World is like therapy. There is so much support and I can eat as many fruits and vegetables as I want without limit.

If youre 40 or older and want a fun way to keep active and healthy without having to face a gym, read on.
So, Im going to talk about something today that doesnt require a gym, and something that can be fun and easy to do jogging.
Now, I know you might be thinking, I hate the thought of running, but heres the thing: Jogging isnt to be confused with running. When you run, you move at a much faster pace than when you jog. Think about it this way jogging, if you like, is a fast-paced walk. Its kind of like taking walking to the next level. And while walking is a great way to keep active, and I recommend finding ways to fit more walking into your day, if you want to do something that gets your heart rate elevated a little bit more jogging could be perfect for you and might even become your next favorite way to maintain keeping active and mobile.
As Im sure you already know, staying active as you get older is critical to staying happy, healthy, active and independent. And, while walking is one of the most popular ways to remain active among people ages 50 and older as its a safe, low-impact activity, swapping your walk for a jog can have great health benefits, too, and it doesnt have to be high-impact. First, not only does jogging improve your overall fitness, it improves your bone density (important to keeping your body strong and reducing your risk of injury), improves your cholesterol levels, reduces inflammation and boosts your mood, making it the perfect exercise to kick-start your day. And the best part is that you dont have to be a marathon runner to reap the health benefits. Just five to 10 minutes per day of jogging, even at a slow and gentle pace, is all you need to start feeling the positive effects.
In addition to the above, jogging burns a lot of calories. Have I caught your attention now? Why does it help burn so many calories? Because jogging is a full-body exercise. It uses a lot of different muscles, requires a strong core and uses your lower and upper body for balance. Any activity that uses your core, upper and lower body to move, will burn more calories than an activity that doesnt require as much muscle recruitment.
Dont enjoy exercising alone? Jogging is one of those activities, just like walking, that can be made social and the perfect activity to do with friends. Instead of sitting in your living room, why not head outside for a jog instead? Jogging at a low intensity allows you to carry on a conversation while staying active, which very few activities do. So now you can kill two birds with one stone.
But what if youre not used to keeping active, and the idea of getting off the sofa and jogging a few miles right now feels daunting? Dont worry. You dont have to be a seasoned jogger to get started. In fact, slow and steady is better for your body, giving it time to adapt and reducing your risk of any injury: the last thing you want is a bad ankle or knee getting in the way. Begin slow and, over the months, and as you feel youre confidently able to take on more, increase your time and distance.
A lot of people I see worry because they think running, or even strenuous walking, will hurt their joints. However, if done right and taken slowly, even with some added breaks for water and a stretch, youll be just fine. Another benefit of jogging and why you dont need the gym is this jogging doesnt require any equipment. Its accessible to almost anyone, regardless of space or equipment. Theres only one thing you will need, and thats a good pair of running shoes.
Jogging is a smart way to stay active as you age, especially because you dont have to run fast or jog five times a week to reap the benefits. With just 45 minutes of jogging each week, you can lose weight, boost heart health, catch up with friends and know youre looking after yourself. Make jogging a regular part of your active lifestyle and youll be feeling stronger and healthier in no time.

MasterChef legend Gregg Wallace has shed four stone since his lifestyle change began in 2017 and credits his motivation to his wife Anna, who is 22 years his junior.
The TV star, 55, has made no secret about the fantastic results as he regularly shows off his ripped abs on Instagram.
He's proudly shed an incredible four stone in weight, and he doesn't plan to stop there.
But the secret to his astonishing weight loss was spurred on by his much-younger wife, 33, as Gregg says he felt motivated to drop the weight in a bid to look good for her.
"Falling in love with a much-younger woman is incentive to look after yourself. I am very aware she is 22 years younger than me. But saying that, shedoesn't care," he recently told MailOnline.
The famous face is hoping to get his body fat down to 15 percent, although Anna doesn't want her husband to become "too muscly".
According to reports, Gregg weighed 16-and-a-half-stone at his heaviest before the dramatic weight loss.
It all began in 2017 when the TV star ditched the booze and takeaways, which has proved to be a huge success.
He told The Sun at the beginning of his journey: "When I was at my biggest I was having a daily fry-up, fish and chips once per week, takeaway a couple more times and drinking beer nearly every day.
"I'm a huge fan of curries, chillies and stews and it is still possible to lose weight and eat hearty meals."
It's said that the dad of three, who welcomed baby son Sid with Anna last April, started taking fitness seriously during summer 2018, and has since stuck to his word.
Having lost a whopping three stone at the start of last January, Gregg showed off his jaw-dropping results on Instagram.
The pleased star wrote: "Sunday morning alone in a gym. Abs and light cardio. Under 13st!!"
Later in September 2018, the star exposed secrets of his weight loss journey.
He told the nation that he cut back on fat and swapped fatty meats for leaner meats.
"I reduced the booze, I've had to give up fry-ups and I exercise more," Wallace explained.
After maintaining his strict exercise of swimming, bodyweight workouts and heavy weight training, Gregg slimmed down to 12 stone and 13 pounds in September 2019.
At the time, his body fat percentage was only 18 percent.
Fast-forward seven months, and Gregg likes to work out at 6am, which he says is the "first thing in his diary".
It appears to be no days off for the star, as he likes to workout "seven days a week", and describes himself as "a big gym bunny" according to MailOnline.
If he happens to be travelling for work, Gregg makes sure he finds "one of those Pure Gyms that are open 24 hours" so he can get a sweat session in.
And of course, the doting dad is kept on his toes by his young son Sid.
Speaking about becoming a new dad once again, the star admitted to the news outlet that he wants to be "fit for my baby".
His health and wellbeing journey has trundled on since the birth of his son.
He added: "I want to be there as long as I can be, and I love that I can run around with him and play with him. I love to strap him to me and run around the grass with him."
But the TV chef says it's also about making yourself feel better.
He revealed that how you feel about yourself each day is the "most important thing in the world".
While the coronavirus pandemic is keeping Brits at home in lock down, Gregg says he will still continue with his cardio workouts.
He said: "There is no way I am not exercising!" and will be sticking to his trainer Danny Rai's personalised workouts from the comfort of his own home.

Stop Obsessing Over Quarantine Weight Gain And Cut Yourself Some Slack – HuffPost
The COVID-19 pounds of weight gain memes popped up pretty much the second we started social distancing and staying home. And while its always infuriating when people make jokes about weight gain, the Quarantine 15 posts and advice articles are especially gross.
Theres already enough stress right now: Unemployment is skyrocketing, hospitals are on overflow (or preparing for the possibility), many people are struggling to meet basic needs, and no one really knows when or how this will all end.
The fear of added pounds during this time is a reflection of the diet culture we live in. Were terrified of weight gain even in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic because were constantly flooded with messages that gaining weight or living in a larger body is very, very bad. Were collectively obsessed with diets, products and intense workout routines that feature before and after photos.
In a time of such anxiety and uncertainty, of course we cling to these weight-centric obsessions theyre familiar, which right now makes them feel almost comforting.
Still, this incessant, communal fear of weight gain really sucks. Its especially harmful for anyone with a history of an eating disorder or similar mental health issues, but its stressful for pretty much everybody. (And, again, there are too many actually legitimate things to be stressed about right now.)
Unfortunately, the weight gain jokes arent going away anytime soon. In the meantime, heres what you can do to tune them out and reframe your own perspective on weight, food and exercise during the pandemic.
Recognize your weight gain fears come from messages youve internalized, and those messages arent necessarily true.

Youre not wrong for worrying about [weight gain], because we live in diet culture, said Brenna OMalley, a registered dietitian and creator of The Wellful.
Right now, diet culture is sending direct messages like Quarantine 15 memes and tips for not gaining weight during quarantine. But there are also subtler messages everywhere the absence of larger bodies in the media, or comments like, Are you sure you want to eat that? when youre going for a slice of office birthday cake.
The first step in ignoring messages like this is recognizing that weight gain, or living in a larger body, isnt inherently unhealthy.
Health encompasses a whole variety of factors, its multifactorial, said Ayana Habetmariam, a social worker, registered dietitian and founder of Truly Real Nutrition.
Social determinants (race, socioeconomic status, gender, stress, perceived stigma), genetics and other lifestyle factors also play a huge role in your overall health. Plus, the link between weight and health is complicated. A 2019 study looked at data from 100,000 Danish adults collected in various cohorts over 40 years, and found that people in the overweight category actually had the lowest mortality risk of all BMI categories.
Knowing this wont instantly change the way you feel about weight gain, nor will it change the way our culture talks about it. But mentally calling out fatphobic thoughts and comments as they come up is a good place to start, OMalley said.
Remember the idea that everyone is going to gain weight during this pandemic is B.S.
Underneath the memes is the unspoken assumption that the pandemic will automatically lead to weight gain for everyone, which just isnt logical.
Thats a really sweeping generalization, OMalley said. I dont think we can make that assumption.
In fact, if youre worried that a disruption to your routine will automatically lead to weight gain, it might be that your routine is too strict to begin with.
Do you assume that not having control over your eating schedule or workout schedule means that you will gain weight? Get curious about where that thought is coming from, OMalley said. So many of us think we constantly need to be calculating our food intake and logging a certain number of workouts.
Were hyper aware of what were doing around movement and eating, so we worry that well gain weight as soon as we loosen the reins.
Such a regimented approach to eating and exercising isnt generally sustainable long-term. In a 2011 review of the existing evidence about weight and weight loss, the authors found that almost no one was able to sustain significant weight loss for more than five years, and that dieting and other weight control behaviors usually just led to weight cycling. Essentially, you lose weight when you start a new routine, inevitably gain it back, then find another routine that starts the cycle all over again.
If youve fallen off the bandwagon of your eating or exercise plan during this pandemic, understand that it likely would have happened anyway if it was too strict, quarantine or not.
Know that emotional eating is kind of to be expected.

OMalley also pointed out that of course your eating habits are a little different these days.
A lot of things have changed recently. Peoples access to food has changed, their schedules have changed, their routines have changed, and weve had really stressful events happening, she said.
The food in your house is likely different than normal, too. The idea that were eating differently in a different pattern, different foods than before makes a lot of sense when we frame it as: When things change, things change, she said.
In the first week or so of quarantine, you may have gravitated toward comforting foods like pizza and ice cream. We tend to equate comfort foods with foods that are rich, savory, creamy, sweet and generally more energy-dense, Habetmariam said.
And thats often true these foods taste good, and can trigger a dopamine response in our brain that also makes us feel good. But its also the sentimental value of a food that makes it comforting: the nostalgia, the sense of security, the happiness, or the love that the memory of it provides, Habetmariam added.
Eating these foods, and calling up these positive emotions, can actually be a helpful way to cope with anxiety and everything else going on.
Of course, food shouldnt be your only coping mechanism. Sleep, movement, social connection (even if its virtual), and therapy are all things you can lean into for comfort and a sense of normalcy right now.
Try intuitive eating, which can help you feel less out of control around food.
When someone first lets go of food rules and starts eating more intuitively, theres often an initial period where they go overboard on foods that had previously been off-limits, Habtemariam explained.
But soon, these foods lose their intense appeal and the person settles into a pretty normal eating routine. The same thing will likely happen with your eating patterns during quarantine.
If people are paying attention to how they feel and just allowing themselves to eat what they want, I do think the emotional eating will eventually taper off, Habtemariam said.
OMalley also pointed out that bingeing is often a response to restriction. If you allow yourself to guiltlessly eat what you want, when you want, youll likely feel more in control around food and be able to stop eating when youre full. On the other hand, obsessing about weight gain and setting rules around what you eat can perpetuate that out-of-control feeling.
Focus on regular movement, not intense exercise.

You might also be freaking out that not having access to the gym will lead to weight gain or a total loss of any progress youve made with fitness. Again, that isnt really true.
Theres a lot of research that shows doing bodyweight exercise or some high-intensity interval training can be enough for getting health benefits and maintaining aerobic capacity. said Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist and host of the All About Fitness podcast. I wouldnt tell anyone to train for the New York Marathon by doing eight minutes of in-home bodyweight exercise. But can you maintain your fitness level that way? Yes.
Thats not to say you need to be doing structured exercise right now. Many of us are too overwhelmed to even consider it. If thats the case, look at this as a recovery period.
In my opinion, a lot of people who go to the gym six to seven times a week are chronically overtrained, McCall said. If nothing else, this is a chance for that nagging knee injury to get better, for that shoulder thing to finally heal.
Instead of focusing on structured workouts, aim to get in some regular movement, which can totally include walking or yard work.
Any kind of exercise really does help reduce the overall stress that were feeling, McCall said.
Stress can raise our levels of cortisol, a hormone that affects blood pressure, blood sugar, and metabolism; movement helps keep these things in balance. And sure, after two weeks of being relatively inactive youll start to lose some fitness, McCall explained. But, so what? Unless youre training to be on a podium somewhere, it really isnt a big deal.
For people who are relatively fit, it should only take around two to six weeks to get that fitness back when this is over, McCall said.

Sugary photos posted by players on social media notwithstanding, Minnesota Uniteds athletic trainers and dietitian have provided Loons living isolated at home this past month with workout programs and a nutrition phone app intended to keep them fit and trim during a season suspended by the coronavirus pandemic.
Ive seen some Instagram posts of cakes and things, team dietitian Angela Bruzina said.
Im over here making cakes and cookies, too. Its OK in the time were in. Just everything within balance is what I keep telling myself.
Bruzina isnt worried so much about weight gained, even after seeing those photos of treats presumably baked and eaten while players stay home separately.
Im actually more worried about them losing weight and losing muscle mass without being able to train the way we normally train, said Bruzina, who worked for MLS FC Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati last year.
Theyre not getting the same kind of stimulus. Hopefully, we can give the guys the tools so they dont lose weight and muscle.
MLS has closed team training facilities and placed a moratorium on teams training through April 24.
Players have been instructed to stay in their teams market unless theyre individually approved by the league to relocate by automobile.
Fitness rooms in players apartment buildings were shut down weeks ago.
Veteran defender Michael Boxall and others have taken to running around Minneapolis lakes and elsewhere while following social-distancing guidelines.

Loons players also have been given exercises and workout routines they can do indoors at home.
I need to stay active because if I dont, thats not me, Gregus said. I have to do something many times during the day now.
Some Loons have kept their skills tuned by juggling a precious roll of toilet paper or a soccer ball with their feet. Theyve posted video to Instagram as part of a worldwide #StayAtHomeChallenge.
They seem to have enough toilet paper to do that, Loons head athletic trainer Stacey Hardin said. Running is great because you dont need any equipment. Shorter runs, longer runs, theyre all great options in a time like this.
Hardin acknowledged anyone confined at home is susceptible to boredom eating, but pro athletes, particularly soccer players, are an exception.
Our players are very mindful their bodies are a big part of their livelihood, she said. The longer this goes, the mind-set shifts that Im at work, this isnt a vacation, this isnt a trip. Youre more accountable and purposeful.
As a reminder to the mindful, Bruzina uses nutrition management software an app called Nutritics used by some English Premier League teams that is themed every day.
Theres Kitchen-Tip Tuesdays, with recipes and videos from which players can learn how to marinate chicken, make their own spice blends and post photos of their creations.
The Wednesday video conference better attended now that its 10:30 a.m. instead of 9:30 provides advice and community for a group used to spending most every day from January to October together.
It gives them the opportunity to see each other and have that social interaction wed have at breakfast together every day, Bruzina said.
In normal times, Loons players are fed lunch in the National Sports Center cafeteria every afternoon and a continental breakfast of sorts in the players lounge, set up with omelet and smoothie stations. They make their own.
Weve had a couple egg-burning disasters, Bruzina said.
Veteran Kevin Molino might be the players best cook, true to the traditional spices of his Caribbean heritage and fond of rice, beans and chicken.
And a lot of butter, Bruzina said.
Shes asked him to spray a pan with a thin coating of oil instead of a glob of butter. With the addition of midfielder Robin Lod, shes adjusting to the Finnish palette for the first time while educating and encouraging the entire roster of varying ages to be inquisitive and creative.
Fueling yourself to perform well doesnt have to be boring, Bruzina said. A lot of athletes think to perform well and eat well, you eat chicken, broccoli and rice four times a day. It doesnt have to be that way.
