Yale researchers say artificial sweeteners can make healthy people sick if they are paired with this – Ladders

Low-calorie sweeteners are supposed to be a healthy way to still enjoy the flavors we love. When these ingredients first burst on the scene many years ago they seemed almost too good to be true, and those feelings were vindicated when several recent studies concluded that low-cal sweeteners disrupt our metabolisms and even promote diabetes and obesity.

Talk about a role reversal. These products are supposed to help people lose weight.

However, other recent research projects have come to conflicting conclusions; that food and drinks containing low-cal sweeteners are perfectly fine for our metabolisms and in all likelihood are a beneficial aid in the pursuit of weight loss.

So, which one is it? A team of Yale researchers may finally put an end to the debate. Well, sort of.

This new piece of Yale researchers found that people who regularly drank beverages containing the low-calorie sweetener sucralose did, in fact, develop problematic metabolic and neural responses. Sucralose can be found in a wide variety of diet and low-cal soft drinks, candy bars, breakfast bars, and other food products. Splenda is produced using sucralose.

But, heres the catch: these problematic reactions only occurred in participants if a carbohydrate in the form of a tasteless sugar had been added to their low-cal beverage. Conversely, participants who just drank the low-cal beverage or even a sugary drink didnt experience any of the aforementioned metabolic or neural changes.

To put it in less scientific terms, it appears that low-cal sweeteners are only harmful when paired with some carbs. So, the next time you feel like a Diet Coke, just dont drink it while eating some pasta.

The subjects had seven low-calorie drinks, each containing the equivalent of two packages of Splenda, over two weeks, says senior author Dana Small, professor of psychiatry and psychology and director of the Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center, in a press release. When the drink was consumed with just the low-calorie sweetener, no changes were observed; however, when this same amount of low-calorie sweetener was consumed with a carbohydrate added to the drink, sugar metabolism and brain response to sugar became impaired.

The research team had originally wanted to test the notion that consuming low-cal sweeteners results in an uncoupling of ones sweet taste perceptions and energy levels. Essentially, this theory suggests that regularly consuming low-cal sweetened products results in ones body developing a diminished physiological response to even real sugar; no more sugar rushes or mood boosts. This phenomenon could conceivably lead to an overall more lethargic lifestyle, contributing to weight gain, diabetes, and glucose intolerance.

These results, though, disprove that hypothesis. Instead, pointing to the mixture of low-cal products and carbs resulting in metabolic impairment.

The bottom line is that, at least in small quantities, individuals can safely drink a diet soda, but they shouldnt add French fries, concludes Small. This is important information, particularly for people with diabetes who shouldnt consume sugars.

While this study provides some answers as to why previous studies have come to varying conclusions on the effects of low-cal sweeteners, its findings also raise a number of new questions. Why does the pairing of carbs & low-cal sweeteners result in detrimental metabolic changes? What role do our brains and neurons play in all this? We seriously shouldnt eat fries with diet soda anymore?

If theres one definite conclusion that can be drawn from all of this, its that manufacturers, scientists, and consumers alike dont have a full understanding of how products like Splenda interact with ones body chemistry.

Still in the saddle: Australian racing goes on amid pandemic – NBC Sports – Misc.

SYDNEY Its arguably more popular in Australia than any other country, so its no surprise that horse racing is continuing minus the spectators despite the increasing travel and other restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The multi-billion dollar racing industry employs 250,000 part- and full-time workers in Australia, where there are more than 360 thoroughbred tracks. Thats roughly one for every 68,000 people, a world-leading ratio by a considerable margin.

Australia boasts some of the worlds richest races. The Melbourne Cup the race that stops a nation is one of the countrys strongest cultural institutions. Sydney hosts The Everest, the $8.6 million sprint. It also has the most lucrative race for two-year-olds, the Golden Slipper, to be run this Saturday, in front of empty grandstands. Rosehill Racecourse would usually be crowded for this.

At least racing can exist without on-location spectators, with devotees able to watch and wager from home. And thats been the only option since measures were brought in last week limiting race days to participants only: jockeys, trainers, racetrack officials, media, and workers such as farriers and ambulance personnel.

The virus outbreak has coincided with some of the biggest events of the southern hemisphere autumn carnivals in Australias two largest cities of Melbourne and Sydney. The Golden Slipper day, for instance, features five Group 1 (or Grade 1) races.

Aside from the removal of race day atmosphere, participants are having to become creative to do what they love in the time of coronavirus. Particularly some of those people who now need looking after the most if racing is to continue the jockeys.

Melbourne racing officials have helped by rescheduling the William Reid Stakes to run an hour earlier than planned, so the jockeys flight can arrive at Sydney airport before its usual night-time curfew.

Racing officials felt if we took those steps and followed the protocols we can keep our industry going, the jockey organizing the charter flight, Craig Williams, told local media. Im happy to do what were told so we can keep racing.

Increased curbs on jockey movement are almost certain to be imposed.

Anthony Darmanin is in different predicament. He will ride Mystic Journey in the William Reid at 8:30 p.m, then head to Melbourne airport hoping to catch the last flight home to Tasmania state at 9:40 p.m. Thats because Tasmania state has instituted restrictions starting midnight Friday forcing anyone entering the southern island state to self-quarantine for 14 days. The drive to the airport should take only 15 minutes, but with check-in time 30 minutes before departure, hell be cutting it fine.

As top dietitian Susie Burrell says: "Often sweet in nature, it is intense food cravings that can see our dietary goals fly out the window as we are completely overcome by a desire to eat foods that are high fat, calories, salt and/or sugars.

"While cravings can tell us a lot about our base line nutrition, how we respond to our cravings is also important, as eating more of what you are craving can actually make the cravings worse."

Here, the Sydney-based expert takes us through some simple strategies to help you take control of your sugar cravings and maximise your weight loss...

Doing something different at the time you would usually have a sweet snack or treat such as going for a brisk walk is a great way to curb sugar cravings.

Not only will it distance you from the food you're craving but it will help to release endorphins - the 'feel good' chemicals in your brain - which can help turn the craving off.

Writing in her blog Shape Me, Susie says: "Cravings are largely behavioural and can easily be broken when we work to alter the neural pathways that we have previously established."

A study published in the journal Appetite found that a significant number of participants lost their craving for chocolate altogether when they had to go for a walk before they could indulge.

Slimmers should try to avoid any large servings of intense sugars and high fat foods such as chocolates, biscuits and ice-cream - as these will be virtually impossible to stop yourself from overeating.

Susie urges people to go forindividual portions of ice-cream or chocolate so you physically cannot overeat them.

Susie recommends practicing the art of food combining - and putting protein rich foods with something sweet to help balance out the flavours you are exposing yourself to.

Here you will avoid the frenzied feeding that can occur when you are quickly eating sugary foods, whilst still satisfying the need for something sweet.

Susie says: "The foods higher in fat hummus, cheese and peanut butter will give you the rich mouth feel you are looking for, as well as offering protein which will also help to keep you full.

"Some of my favourite food combos include apple slices or celery dipped or spread with peanut butter, Greek yoghurt with berries, chopped nuts and a spoon of honey (this can also be made into frozen yoghurt, or rice cakes or corn cakes topped with peanut butter and banana."

We're all guilty of reaching in the biscuit tin or munching on a bar of chocolate right at the end of the day to give us a boost.

However, Susie urges slimmers to set a time when they stop eating to ensure they don't gorge on sweet treats.

She says: "Aim to stop eating by a certain time, and brush your teeth to help to shift the desire for sweet food.

"Or if cravings take hold mid-afternoon, try and preempt them with a healthy snack and keep gum or sugar free mints or vegetable sticks on hand to take the place of sweet foods when you want to mindlessly munch."

Fad diets and their effects on physical health – Iowa State Daily

According to the National Weight Control Registry, 50 percent of people regain all weight lost on a diet plan within two years.

Fad diets are a big weight loss trend. What some dont know is that they are only a temporary fix in most cases and likely poor for your health.

Some of these diets include the ketogenic diet, Paleolithic diet and intermittent fasting.

The ketogenic, or keto diet, is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that forces the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. This diet is also used to treat epilepsy in children.

The Paleolithic diet, orpaleo diet, also referred to as the caveman diet, is the consumption of foods presumed to be eaten by humans in the Paleolithic era. These foods include fish, meat, fruits and vegetables. Processed products as well as dairy and grain are excluded.

Intermittent fasting is not focused on what you eat, but when you eat. Depending on what intermittent fasting schedule a person follows, the diet breaks up their hours or days into eating periods and fasting periods.

Some can feel a lot of pressure to lose weight, but fad diets can make weight loss physically unhealthy.

Matthew Rowling, associate professor in food science and human nutrition, said his initial reaction to these diets are they are terrible for you.

Rowling said the keto diet robs you from the nutrients that feed your brain.

You are missing out on nutrient-dense foods,"Rowling said."At the same time they are putting in their body things that are known to promote cardiovascular disease."

The keto diet helps children with epilepsy because the ketone bodies that are produced in ketogenesis slow down the neural activity that causes seizures, Rowling said.

There is a higher risk of cardiovascular disease with these types of foods.

When people go keto, theyre depriving themselves of carbohydrates, which taste good," Rowling said. "When they eat the proteins and those types of things, they are not going for bland chicken breasts. They are going to eat more fatty types of foods cause it tastes better. They need that sensation."

Student Wellness dietician Lisa Nolting works one-on-one with Iowa State students who have a variety of needs regarding nutrition. Nolting also coordinates the campus eating disorders treatment team and supervises a group of peer wellness educators who do health promotion and prevention programs.

Nolting said she considers herself a weight neutral dietician, which means she doesnt view weight loss or weight gain as positive or negative. She said her job is more of a way to figure out how to help someone eat in a way that makes them feel healthy and happy.

When students doing these fad diets go to Nolting for help, her initial reaction is to ask whywhat is driving the student to do this, what is the student hoping to achieve, where is the student getting their information from and many more questions so she can evaluate the situation.

Part of my job as a dietician is to do an assessment to find out whats going on overall medically as well as socially and emotionally, Nolting said.

Nolting said when people are doing any type of diet thats not intuitive, something where theyre using external cues to guide their food choices, 95 percent of the time they will regain that weight.

With these diets come problems. When someone is constantly losing and gaining back weight, their hormones fluctuate. It is not good for the body or the mind.

Nolting said she sees that when people go on keto diet, they are missing out on carbohydrates so they have very low energy. These people also have trouble sleeping at night because the body is not able to produce melatonin.

When people go off the paleo diet and reintroduce certain foods into their system, like dairy or grains, they might have some gastrointestinal distress.

With intermittent fasting, the dieters are so used to fasting throughout the day that it might take some time for them to retrain their hunger and fullness.

Paige Green is a registered dietician for Hy-Vee. She assists people with their diet plans and overall health goals.

These diets are very black and white. Eliminate these food groups and eat only these," Green said. "Or, keep carbs to this specific number, or dont eat until this time. When diets give out strong rules, such as the three mentioned, people get hooked."

Green said people will experience weight loss anytime more processed foods and sugars are cut from their daily food intake. It is important to talk to a dietitian and figure out some food alternatives or supplements to aid where your diet has been lacking.

Rowling, Nolting and Green recommend staying away from these fad diets and finding professional help if you are looking to lose weight.

Participating in these fad diets create a bad relationship between the consumer and food. It is best to get a professional's opinion when wanting to lose weight or eat healthier.

Addition of Odgers brings strength to Wild | TheAHL.com – American Hockey League

John Odgers knew at a young age he wanted to work in the world of professional hockey.

After all, the 26-year-old native of Spy Hill, Sask., and son of NHL veteran Jeff Odgers is what one might call a hockey brat.

I lived in locker rooms from September to April growing up and on the family farm from May through August, the Iowa Wilds strength and conditioning coach said. We lived in San Jose, Boston, Colorado, almost in Minnesota, but then finally in Atlanta.

Odgers experiences and family travels with a father who played more than 800 games in the NHL speaks volumes about how someone of his age could become the first full-time strength and conditioning coach for Iowa.

We got along right away when we met in development camp, Iowa head coach Tim Army recalled. He came highly recommended by the Minnesota staff. It was an easy decision to make.

Odgers, known as Odgie around the Wild weight room in the basement of Wells Fargo Arena, already has received a lot of credit for helping several Wild players, whether it was Mason Shaws rehabilitation of his third knee surgery or providing a weight loss regimen for forward Dmitry Sokolov and defenseman Matt Register.

Hes been great for me, said Shaw, who only recently returned to playing after an eight-month recovery from a knee injury sustained in last years playoffs. Im really happy with the work he did with me to get where I am. He brings a great attitude every day. Hes very fun to be around and were very lucky to have him.

Similarly, Register, who recently signed his first standard AHL contract after seven seasons in the ECHL, gave a lot of credit to Odgers to get him to lose weight and improve his overall conditioning to land the contract.

He helped me a lot, Register said. Its a process and he worked with me to stay on it. He had my back throughout all of it and he helped me get to that level and goal where I wanted to be.

While some players came to the team in need of weight loss, others require Odgers services to keep weight on.

With players like Reggie or Sokolov, we work hard at improving the ability to move more quickly and to have better stamina by losing weight, Odgers said. Someone like Sam Anas, however, we are trying to get him to stay where is or gain weight.

Odgers oversees the daily workout routines of each Wild player from his desk positioned right inside the weight room. Workout sessions differ throughout the season with more of an emphasis on increasing strength in the offseason and early season to maintenance of strength and muscle recovery as the year progresses. He also works with Wild head athletic trainer Masa Takaiwa on all rehabilitation exercises for injured players.He also monitors the players nutritional needs, including the ordering of food for breakfast and lunch for practices and morning skates.

Odgers interest in strength training and conditioning began when playing junior hockey for Yorkton Terriers in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

I was somebody who always enjoyed being in the weight room and working out during the season, he said. And then, as I got into it more, I discovered that I liked reading about it and learning more about it.

As his junior hockey career ended, Odgers understood his playing career didnt hold much promise, but a career combining hockey and strength training and conditioning did.

I wanted to have a career that combined the two things that I enjoyed the most, which is hockey. And then the other side of it was strength conditioning, lifting weights, health and fitness, he said.

Odgers received a bachelors degree in kinesiology from the University of Regina and just completed his masters degree in November at the same school.

Ironically, the biggest problem for Odgers in deciding to study kinesiology was having to explain to his grandfather that he didnt want to work on the family farm a nearly 2,500-acre spread that raises cattle and grows wheat and flax.

The farm, located about a 2.5-hour drive southeast of Regina, is a century farm this year and has had five generations of the Odgers family work and own it.

Odgers said his brother, Dakota, will be the one to take over the farm once he decides to stop playing hockey. He currently plays for Carlton University located in Ottawa.

I always joke that Im lucky that he wanted to take over the farm because I would have to tell my grandpa that I didnt want to farm, Odgers laughed.

His decision to get a masters degree came as a result of a four-month internship with one of his fathers old teams, the San Jose Sharks, under the direction of Mike Potenza, the Sharks strength and conditioning coordinator.

The hiring of a full-time strength and conditioning coach a position filled as a part-time post until this season, was a huge priority for Army, who emphasizes how the AHL team must replicate the Minnesota Wild as much as possible.

Army said he talked with Tom Kurvers, Iowas general manager, about establishing a full-time position strength and conditioning position beginning in 2019-20.

We needed to hire a full-time strength coach here; that was a huge priority. It doesnt matter who the player is. They all need this kind of attention, Army said. Its an important piece of their ability to be able to play to their full strength.

Army added young players are the ones who likely need it the most, making it even more important to establish a full-time coach in Iowa.

Our younger players need somebody because they dont know this process, he said. They need some oversight on what theyre doing.

Army said Odgers won the job while working with Minnesota Wild staff during last summers development camp. Ever since, hes been a valuable part of the Wild staff.

I just took to him right away. I really liked him, Army said. He worked well with all of the players and got a high recommendation from the Minnesota staff. Its been a good fit.

A Co Antrim woman whose obesity contributed to a cancer diagnosis has undergone radical gastric by-pass surgery in Lithuania to lose weight and protect her health.

laine McClenaghan (49) from Glengormley says she feels like a new person since coming through the operation last April when she had her stomach taken away, leaving her with a tiny 30ml pouch.

Overeating was the reason why Elaine's weight ballooned to over 20 stone at her heaviest before the procedure.

Since surgery she can no longer eat full portions and uses a toddler's plate at meal times.

However she has lost over six stone in a year, dropping from 20 stone 8lb to 14 stone 3lb, and says she has never felt better.

More importantly though for Elaine, she has reduced her risk of cancer coming back, a real prospect because of her weight that terrified her and led her to take such a drastic step.

She says: "I had my annual cancer review last week and my consultant didn't recognise me.

"He was delighted that I had lost so much weight.

"He told me that he would be signing me off and giving me the all-clear a year early because I had reduced my chances of the cancer coming back so much by having the surgery and losing the weight.

"I feel like a different person in every way. At first I thought I might be embarrassed telling people I had the surgery but I didn't do it for vanity reasons, I did it for my health.

"Not only has my health improved physically but it has been great for my mental health as well and I am a much happier person. People have told me they can see the old Elaine back as I had lost all my confidence because of my weight."

Elaine, who works as a finance officer, was just married a little over a year to David (51), a warehouse team leader, when she was told she had womb cancer.

She took excruciating pains in her stomach and was bleeding heavily and her GP referred her as urgent to Antrim Area Hospital where she was diagnosed in November 2015.

She underwent a hysterectomy in January 2016 and required no further treatment. However, her gynaecologist did leave her in no doubt that her weight was a major contributor to her cancer diagnosis. She was also informed that unless she lost weight she was at a high risk of cancer returning.

Her anxiety led to her eating more and she actually put weight on.

As a newly-wed she wanted to look forward and started to research surgery to see what options were available to her.

She recalls: "All my life I have been battling my weight and it has gone up and down. I have tried every diet going but my problem is I comfort eat.

"I would look in the mirror and see how fat I was and that depressed me and so I ate to make myself feel better.

"In my teens and 20s I would have been 13 stone and when I married David in June 2013 I was 17 stone. Last year before I had the gastric bypass I was at my heaviest of 20 stone 8lb.

"When I was diagnosed with cancer I was told by the consultant that being obese was a main factor and that really frightened me.

"I was 17 and a half stone and I was putting on more weight and I knew that if I didn't do something I wouldn't see my 60th birthday. I could hardly walk with my weight and the pain in my knees and back.

"Luckily David loved me the way I was but I could see it wasn't just ruining my life but his life as well.

"I started to research gastric bypass and looked into having it done here but it's not done in Northern Ireland.

"I saw my gynaecologist and asked if he would send me to get it done in the Republic of Ireland or England and he looked into it, but said they didn't have the money to cover it."

In the course of her research, Elaine came across a leading surgeon in the field who works between Dubai and the Nordbariatric clinic in Kaunas, Lithuania.

Last year, the clinic experienced a 50% influx of British patients, with around 20 patients from the UK undergoing the surgery every month.

The clinic says the demand is due to the vast experience of the chief surgeon Dr Almantas Maleckas who has carried out more than 6,000 gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries.

It was Dr Maleckas who first drew Elaine to the clinic. She says: "When I realised I couldn't get it done on the NHS I started to look further afield as a last resort.

"I came across this consultant online and saw how many years he had been doing it and I contacted the clinic for information.

"They referred me to a Facebook page of patients who had been through it which I found really useful. One girl from here had had it done and she talked to me and reassured me."

Elaine had no money to pay for the surgery and took out a loan.

The total cost, including flights and hotel accommodation, came to around 5,700 which included five years of aftercare. This involves the consultant being available for appointments via Skype as well as access to a nutritionist when needed.

With her mind made up and feeling she had no other choice, Elaine booked her operation for April of last year.

Gastric bypass surgery involves removing the stomach and leaving a pouch of 30ml in its place. The procedure is carried out through keyhole surgery.

She arrived in Lithuania on April 7 last year and went through the operation on April 10, returning home four days later. She says: "It has been absolutely amazing. I have gone from a size 26 to a size 18 and although I would like to lose some more weight, I am happy as I don't think I will ever be a size 10.

I am so glad I got it done. I have more energy and my mental health has really improved.

"I was grand after the surgery. I had five small wounds where they did keyhole with two stitches in each which dissolved.

"I wasn't in any pain or discomfort. The first couple of weeks were the hardest because all you can eat is liquids so I lived solely on soup and protein shakes.

"Then for week three and four I had to eat pureed food and soft foods like scrambled eggs and mashed bananas but after six weeks I was able to eat anything I wanted."

While no foods are banned she was advised to give up her favourite fizzy drinks and her portion sizes had to be dramatically reduced.

As someone who became obese through overeating for comfort, she hasn't found her dramatically reduced intake of food hard to deal with.

She says: "You can't eat and drink at the same time, there has to be 20 minutes between each. You do run the risk of stretching your pouch if you eat too much so I eat little and often and it takes very little to make me feel full.

"If we go out for a meal I have a starter as a main course and at home I put my food on a baby plate. I could have two pieces of broccoli, one potato and less than half of a chicken breast in one meal.

"For breakfast I have one Weetabix and at lunch I would have a yoghurt and a piece of fruit. Sometimes I do want to eat more but I don't want to put the weight on so I am able to control it now."

As well as the weight loss, Elaine has seen a major improvement in her overall health.

She has been able to cut down on blood pressure medication and antidepressants which she was dependent on before her weight loss.

She is also physically fitter and has for the first time in her life discovered a joy in exercising. She regularly goes to her local gym, attends a boogie bounce exercise class weekly and is hoping to start swimming this month.

She walks more often and says overall she feels like a different person.

She adds: "I am so glad I got it done. I have more energy and my mental health has really improved.

"In 2018 I went to Belgium on holiday and had to get an extended seat belt on the plane and I was mortified. I cried the whole journey home.

"This year for my 50th birthday in June we are planning to go to Dubai and I wouldn't have contemplated it if I hadn't lost the weight.

"I do feel like a totally new person and the doctor told me that I have added so many more years onto my life.

"I couldn't speak highly enough of the clinic and how professional they were. They have been fantastic and I couldn't have done it without my husband, family and friends."
