Mexico pays obese cops to lose weight and get in shape – The Yucatan Times
Its a sunny morning in Mexico City, and police officers drip with sweat as they do push-ups and squats, part of a program for overweight cops in one of the worlds most obese countries.
The two dozen officers grimacing through their workout on the pavement of the station house yard most with round bellies bulging beneath their drenched T-shirts are just a handful of the more than 1,000 across the capital who have enrolled in the program, Healthy Police.
They get a bonus of 1,000 pesos (about $50) a month to participate though judging by the looks on their faces as their instructor shouts encouragement to finish one more set, some of them seem to doubt whether its worth it.
But those who stick with the program, which was launched three months ago, say it can be life-changing.
This was all completely new to me The first month was tough, both mentally and physically, said one, Mauricio Barrera.
But the program has helped me understand that obesity is an illness, the 26-year-old told AFP.
Barrera, who now looks fit and trim, cracked a grin when he revealed how much weight he has lost since he started: 16 kilos (35 pounds).
This program is a way to fight the obesity problem we have in Mexico, the sedentary lifestyle, said Javier Ramirez, the buff fitness instructor guiding the beat cops through their routine.
We want them to be in optimal condition so they can do their jobs effectively.
Obesity epidemic
Three-quarters of adults in Mexico are overweight or obese, according to national statistics.
Its obesity rate nearly one-third of the adult population is second only to the United States in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a 36-member group of developed countries.
Mexicos obesity epidemic is driving high rates of diabetes and heart disease, according to public health experts.
Officials have started looking for ways to combat the problem.
In 2014, the country leveled a tax on soda and other sugary beverages. One study estimates it will save 18,900 lives and more than $983 million over 10 years.
This year, Congress also passed a law requiring manufacturers to put warning labels on junk foods high in sugar, sodium or saturated fat.
Body feels the difference
Mexico Citys 83,000-member police force is not immune to the problem.
My health was poor, and I was getting tired at work, said officer Graciela Benitez, 36, taking a break from her crunches.
She has lost around 10 kilos since she started the program, which also includes nutrition counseling sessions to help officers eat a more healthful, balanced diet.
I used to feel sleepy after lunch. I was tired when I got to work, said Benitez.
Now, I dont get tired. My body feels the difference.
The authorities are hoping she will serve as an example for more obese police.

Much like the diet pills involved in the fen-phen scandal back in the 1990s, any magical quick fix, be it vegetable, mineral or other, should fail to pass the common sense test.
Any diet that has no protein, only protein, no carbs, no fats, only carrots or anything else that is extreme and immoderate is highly questionable.

You plan to work out after work, but after a week you notice youre not sleeping as well or youre too tired to get important things done.
Changing things up and tweaking a plan is a great way to make it your own.
The healthy meals you bought may cost too much to continue forever, but if they worked, find a way to make them yourself on the cheap.
Its not a failure to decide to try something different. Its an opportunity to be creative and come up with something new.

Changing entrenched patterns is difficult. You must choose health and wellness every day.
One day it may seem like you can totally do this. The next day, inexplicably, it seems so much harder to skip that caramel latte.
Remind yourself what your goals are, and why theyre important. Text your bestie and wail about how desperately you do not want to go out in the cold and run, and then, not even be able to eat your favorite, totally unhealthy meal.
But keep at it. Its worth it to move toward your goals.
Sticking with your plans for eating, exercise or spirituality daily is fantastic, in theory.
The day someone brings your favorite dessert to the office, maybe give yourself a break. Eating it will probably cause less stress than depriving yourself, as long as it doesn't happen frequently.
If you miss a day of exercise, thats okay. Just don't skip workouts all the time.
Ruthless adherence to new wellness plans can be helpful to get you going at first, but when overplayed that kind of rigidity is more likely to lead to failure than a short detour from the path.
Making healthy changes is often self-sustaining. When you feel better, look better and function better, you will want to do more of whatever got you there.
That said, it doesnt hurt to build in rewards for effort. Putting aside money for something special, or making time to do something youll enjoy, are great ways to self-reinforce.
Using cheat days on meal plans and skipping classes or gym days as a reward can be worrisome, because its a slippery slope. Its more effective to do something positive for yourself when youve achieved two weeks at the gym or on a new meal plan.
Fitness apps that track progress are also reinforcing because you can the results of your effort concretely.
Its normal to slip up on new health and wellness goals. Theres no need for self-criticism, belittling or whatever it is you do when you realize youre not perfect. A lapse doesnt have to be an epic fail.
Evaluate your slip up, decide if you need to make a change, and start again.
Lapses give you good information about your weaknesses. You can come up with ideas about avoiding pitfalls, like not allowing the breadbasket on the table in a restaurant, or making sure you dont avoid the gym because youre avoiding the ex.
Lapses also give you confidence when you see you can regain momentum.
Use your common sense. Its a long and winding road to health and wellness, complete with roadblocks.
Focus on planning your path forward, recovering from setbacks and enjoying the journey.

Kate Hudson Says It Took Twice As Long To Lose Baby Weight After Giving Birth To Rani – Women’s Health
When Kate Hudson sets a goal for herself she knocks it out. But the actress, 40, just revealed that hitting her goal weight after giving birth to third child Rani Rose took longer than her previous pregnancies.
Kate dropped the postpartum weight in about six months after giving birth to her second son Bing in July 2011, but not this pregnancy, she told People at a Happy x Nature Eco-Evening Collection event in Los Angeles. This one took a little bit longer. It was like 12 months, but I did it differently.
Kate joined WW as a global ambassador last December and announced her weight loss goal of 25 pounds. It was a smarter way to take weight off, because it stays off, she told the publication. I think the wonderful thing about what that is, is you can eat what you want, you just have to be conscious. It teaches you about food.
Kate's hard work in the gym also helped her reach her postpartum weight loss goal. (If you have eight minutes, you can try Kate's at-home butt workout RN.) Unlike with the other two, I didnt really have time to work out, she previously told Women's Health. It took a different kind of discipline.
Still, Kate squeezes in three or four workouts a week, alternating classes on her Peloton Tread, pole dancing (she has a pole at home), hot yoga, workouts at Body by Simone, Beachbody Brazil Butt Lift, and private Pilates sessions with instructor Nicole Stuart.
I enjoy being disciplined. I enjoy being athletic, and I enjoy being active," she told People. "So for me its actually kind of a fun time to challenge my body again in certain ways. After pregnancy, getting your body back into shape for meespecially in fitnessfinding my stomach muscles again and pushing myself a little bit harder sometimes are things that I enjoy.

How to lose weight like this guy from Pune who lost 30 kgs following a diet that he created on his own – GQ India – What a man’s got to do
First things first, a seven-day crash diet or crash dieting in general cannot and will not help you lose weight. Crash dieting basically forces you to cut down your food intake very drastically. This pattern of eating/dieting is extremely unhealthy.
Now, that this point is through (hopefully), wed like to throw light on a dietary approach that can and will help you lose weight a diet made in accordance with your macros and lifestyle as it did for 24-year-old Ishit Vyas, who created one for himself after realising the perils of crash dieting.
Vyas tells us that in 2016 he realised that he was in a terrible shape. Back in November 2016, post my birthday actually, I was looking through some pictures, my friends and I had clicked to share on social media when I couldnt even find a single presentable photo of myself to share online. This one incident motivated me to lose weight and get fit.
I weighed 97 kgs at this point, and commenced on my weight loss journey by going on crash diet but that didnt work out for more than a couple of days. I had started getting major hunger pangs soon after I began. So, I made a diet plan for myself considering the nutritional value of foods and their relation with my body.
"Below, I have highlighted this diet plan. Also, I am a vegetarian. So, the diet plan that helped me lose 30 kgs and trim from 97 kgs to 67 kgs was 100 per cent vegetarian."
"My diet comprised a lot of boiled food, fruits, soups and juices. To break it down further, these 7 food items comprised my daily diet:
1. Boiled mixed pulses
2. Boiled mixed vegetables
3. Boiled mixed dals
4. Juice of different boiled vegetables (The juice of bottle gourd + tomato helps speed the process of weight loss)
5. Fruits (Except some like mangoes, which can actually help increase your weight)
6. Roasted/raw peanuts/chickpeas - for when you get hungry during the day
7. A small packet of oats
I used to eat boiled vegetables, boiled mixed beans and boiled mix dal and oats for all my meals, all rotationally, of course. For breakfast, I used to eat one khakra and a cup of milk with honey.
I used to get done with my last meal between 6:00-8:00 pm. The proportion of this meal wasnt fixed, except for oats. For the case of oats, I used to consume one serving pack of oats, which is readily available in the market. I also used to also drink a glass of mixed juice made from boiled bottle gourd and tomatoes.
To make everything listed above tasty, add some onion, garlic, spices, salt, lemon or Maggi masala according to your taste. You can also include curd as an option or drink buttermilk. After 3 months of following this meal plan, after I found a visible difference in my weight, I started taking one cheat meal every month.
Notably, except following this meal plan religiously, Vyas would go for a 5 km-long brisk walk daily to help get in shape.

Says Vyas, my daily schedule would comprise going for walks on 3 consecutive days and then taking a day to rest. After losing a considerable amount of weight, I started doing planks. Planks helped a lot to reduce belly fat.

Says Sachin, I was always slightly overweight but never obese. In the last few years, however, I had gained a lot of weight (blame it on my lifestyle and bad eating habits). When my weight touched 106 kgs, I pressed the panic button and started trying various diets and exercise regimes to lose weight and get fit.

Breakfast (9:00 am): 2-3 eggs + spinach and avocado juice + bullet tea (without sugar and with butter)
Mid-day (11:00 am): Coffee
Lunch: (1:00 pm): Okra or cauliflower or paneer + cauliflower rice or sometimes roti made from flax seeds + a boiled egg or an omelette
Evening snacks (6:00 pm): A cup of tea without sugar and grilled paneer or a small bowl of strawberries, blueberries
Dinner (8:30 pm): Keto-friendly veggies with almond flour roti or cauliflower rice or eggs
It was tough to adapt to this diet but once I managed to get past the first 2 weeks, it was a wave. Once your body gets adapted to burning fat as fuel you will have no cravings for sweets or high carb foods. Before this diet I could not control hunger for even 2 hours but now I can easily manage without eating anything for 24 hours by only drinking water and coffee."
I follow an intermittent fasting pattern of eating to maintain my weight along with going to the gym regularly.

The turning point: My t-shirt size went from XL to XXXL and my waistline touched a whopping 46 inches. If that wasnt enough, I was chased in my school for being fat and it was a complete nightmare. As a result, I had started wearing very loose clothes to hide the fat.
One day, a guy I considered my friend said that I was the most obese person in the class. That statement pinched me like anything and I realised that I needed to get back in shape. That was the day I started my weight loss journey with dedication.
My breakfast: 2 boiled eggs and 1 glass of milk or 2 slices of bread with paneer.My lunch: 2 chapatis and 1 bowl of sabzi or dal and 1 egg or 1 chapati with two eggs. I have a cup of green tea after lunch or after heavy meals.My dinner: 1 bowl of soup or a portion of fruits like guava, apple, pineapple or papaya.Pre-workout meal: 1 cup of black coffee
Post-workout meal: 1 bananaI indulge in: I never reserved any special day as my cheat day. During my weight loss journey, my only cheat days were birthday parties, marriages and the times when I went on a vacation. I sometimes eat Maggi or fried chicken on Sundays.My workout: I never went to the gym to lose weight.
