How a Vegan Diet Can Help You Lose Weight – Care2.com

People may choose a vegan diet for a variety of reasons, be it for the environment, animal ethics or health.

However, some people give the vegan diet a try purely to lose excess weight and perhaps for good reason.

Vegans tend to have lower body mass indexes (BMIs) than the general population, and several studies acknowledge that a vegan diet can promote weight loss (1,2).

Not to mention, a well-planned vegan diet is nutritious, can lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and may even decrease your risk of certain diseases (3,4).

This article explains how a vegan diet can help you lose weight and shares some tips on how to follow this diet in a healthy way.

Observational studies often report vegans to be thinner or to have lower BMIs than the general population (2,5).

In addition, randomized controlled trials, the gold standard in scientific research, show that when all other factors are controlled for,vegan dietscan help participants lose significant amounts of weight (6,7).

In one study, people following a vegan diet for 18 weeks lost 9.3 pounds (4.2 kg) more than those who made no dietary changes (6).

Another study compared vegan diets to vegetarian,pescatarian, semi-vegetarian and omnivorous diets.

Participants assigned to the vegan group lost an average of 7.5% of their body weight over the 4-month study period. This was more than twice as much weight as the average lost in each of the other four groups (8).

A vegan diet even appears to help people lose weight more effectively than diets commonly recommended by several different health authorities.

In fact, a low-fat vegan diet helped participants in one study lose 2 to almost 3 times more weight than diets recommended by the American Dietetics Association (ADA), the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) (1,3,4,9,10).

In a study that followed up with participants one year after the initial study period, researchers reported that all participants regained some weight.

However, those initially on the vegan diet remained 5 pounds (2.3 kg) lighter than those initially assigned to the control weight loss diet (1).

A vegan diet can help you create this calorie deficit in several ways.

Higher fiber intake may help you achieve the calorie deficit needed forweight losswithout restricting your calorie intake or portion sizes.

Studies show that consuming an extra 14 grams of fiber each day may naturally decrease your calorie intake by as much as 10%. This could lead to a loss of 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg) over a period of approximately 4 months (14).

The high fiber content of the vegan diet may also explain why study participants assigned to a vegan diet often lose weight despite being allowed to eat until they feel full (1,4,9,15).

Due to its higher content of fruits and vegetables, a vegan diet provides fewercaloriesfor the same volume of food. In other words, its less calorie-dense.

Practically speaking, you would have to eat approximately 10.5 ounces (300 grams) of cooked broccoli or about 10 ounces (283 grams) of melon to consume 100 calories.

Meanwhile, it would only take around 2 ounces (56 grams) of chicken breast or about 1 ounce (28 grams) of cheese to reach the same number of calories.

The lower calorie density of plant foods causes you to feel full with fewer calories, thus potentially contributing to the calorie deficit needed for weight loss.

However, its important to note that when matched for calories, a vegan diet is no more effective than a control diet for weight loss (16).

Many of the foods you come across each day contain animal products.

These include high-calorie, low-nutrient options such as processed foods and baked goods, which are deceptively easy to overeat (17).

Studies show that being exposed to such foods makes you more likely to consume them (18).

Following a vegan diet can make it easier to limit or avoid these options.

For instance, its easier to avoid eating more calories than you need when the cafe doesnt offer vegan brownies or when a bowl of candy only contains milk chocolate.

Research shows that having access to a wider variety of foods may cause you to mindlessly consume up to 23% more calories. By limiting your food choices to a select few, a vegan diet can help reduce your risk of overeating (19).

A vegan diet may also restrict the variety of choices you have when eating out. As a result, many vegans choose to cook at home rather than go to restaurants.

Home-cooked meals often contain less fat, sugar and overall calories than restaurant meals. This can help you limit calories and lose weight.

Studies show that a vegan diet may reduce symptoms of arthritis as well, such as joint pain, swelling and morning stiffness (27,28).

Well-planned vegan diets are considered nutritious and safe for all stages of life (29,30,31).

But poorly planned vegan diets can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies and poor health.

For example,vegansare more likely to suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency. This risk seems especially apparent for vegans who dont consume vitamin B12 supplements or eat vitamin B12-fortified foods (32).

Poorly planned vegan diets may also be lacking in calcium,omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, iron and zinc (33,34,35,36,37).

Consuming insufficient amounts of these nutrients can lead to an array of health issues, including nervous system damage,hypothyroidism, anemia, bone fractures and depression (38,39,40,41).

Vegans who fail to consume fermented foods such as sauerkraut and natto may also lack sufficient vitamin K2, a nutrient important for heart and bone health (42,43,44).

Finally, genetics may affect your ability tothrive on a vegan diet.

Up to 45% of people are unable to convert the beta-carotene found in carrots and other orange-colored vegetables to retinol, the active form of vitamin A (45,46).

Similarly, some peoples genetics may make it harder to maintain adequate levels of choline, a nutrient important for heart, liver and nervous system health (47).

For some people on a weight-loss journey, the struggle doesnt end with just shedding pounds.

Jessica Weber from Peru, Ill., is well aware of that after losing 180 pounds more than half her body weight.

On Thursday, the 24-year-old shared an honest Instagram snap, which revealed her impressive weight-loss transformation and the loose skin it left her with.

This is my reality! This is my life! she writes in the caption. When you lose 180 pounds, the skin doesnt just suck back up! I have been learning to deal with it, even with wanting to lose a bit more weight and have surgery!

She adds, This is my life until then, and I will not hate my body anymore!

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Weber shares that she started gaining weight when she was 9 years old and she was 383 pounds by the time she was 22.

She underwent weight-loss surgery in January and has since adopted a healthier lifestyle and diet, dropping her meat- and starch-based diet for one thats rich in protein and vegetables.

The extra weight affected my life with how I was looked down on for my weight gain being since that I started so young. It also affected my life in making friends because I lacked the confidence, she said. I wasnt happy; I would pretend to be OK with it though.

Weber is now a body-positivity advocate on Instagram, where she shares her weight-loss journey with her more than 18,000 followers.

When I look back at pictures, I cant believe I got to be as big as I was. I cant believe I didnt try harder to lose weight before I got to that point, she says. I feel sad because I feel like I wasted years of my life, but now that Im losing weight, I feel more confident and am out doing a lot more, so I feel like Im getting my life back.

Long cardio exercises won’t help you lose weight – Star2.com – Star2.com

The general consensus seems to persist that the longer you engage in a steady-state/moderate cardio activity, such as running or using an elliptical machine, the more your health and waistline are likely to benefit. However, research suggests that long periods (more than 60 minutes per day) of this kind of repetitive cardio workout arent the best way to lose weight or improve your fitness, and could even be detrimental to your health.

Terms such as chronic cardio or cardio trap are now being used by health and fitness professionals to describe the drawbacks and inefficiencies of an excessively cardio-focused exercise regime.

The benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) have been proven, but while its previously been assumed that more repetitions lead to better cardiorespiratory fitness levels, an analysis by the University of Stirling, Scotland published in January suggests that people who do fewer repetitions during HIIT workouts may get better fitness benefits than those who complete more.

Over time our bodies adapt to repetitive aerobic exercise, using oxygen and energy more efficiently, thereby hindering fat loss. Endurance cardio has also been linked to an increase in the bodys production of the stress hormone cortisol. If cortisol levels remain raised over time, our bodies become more sensitive to insulin and store fat (particularly in the abdominal area). Serotonin, thyroid function, growth hormone, testosterone and oestrogen levels are all disrupted.

Pushing yourself without placing your body in a prolonged state of stress is key. Food choices are of upmost importance and, regardless of your workout, you need to avoid overeating. Variation in routine allows for psychological and physiological stimulation; nevertheless, repeating activities such as high-intensity sprints or heavy lifting can allow you to follow your progress and programme your workouts for maximum effectiveness.

For those new to exercise, initial weight loss from cardiovascular exercise may be deceiving and it may take longer to notice diminishing results. For those who do steady-state cardio workouts on a regular basis, a plateau in fitness and aesthetic improvements might be more obvious.

How to break the cycle and avoid the cardio trap:

Increase the intensity and reduce the time

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts usually require performing exercises at maximum effort for between 30 seconds and a few minutes. Instead of running at a moderate pace for an extended period, try some sprinting (eg eight 100-metre sprints) with a minute or two break in between. Tabata Training: eight rounds of any tough exercise at maximum effort for 20 seconds, followed by a 10-second break. Squat jumps, burpees, Prowler pushing are good examples. Repeat the same exercise for all eight rounds.

Lift weights and add resistance training to your workout.

Lift heavy objects

Focus on lifting weights and performing resistance training with good technique, including pushing and pulling actions. Challenge your strength with full body functional movements such as dead lifts, squats, overhead presses. Explore not only lifting conventional weights, but also awkward objects such as flipping tyres and carrying stones. Not only should you vary the weight, you should also vary the volume, so that sometimes you are lifting as heavy a weight as possible for a few repetitions and other times repeating more than 10 repetitions. Vary the tempo or pause midway through a movement.

Reduce stress

Pushing yourself without placing your body in a prolonged state of stress is key. Avoid overtraining; instead be less sedentary on a daily basis and do low-intensity cardio such as walking. Keep general stress levels at bay with daily mindfulness or meditation. Heroin addict returned to drugs after taking amphetamines to lose … – Derbyshire Times

A heroin addict who slipped back into using drugs after he started taking amphetamines to lose weight has twice been caught with a stash of illicit substances.

Chesterfield magistrates court heard on Tuesday, April 18, how Andrew Harding, 39, of Franklin Avenue, Whitwell, was caught with heroin and two lots of amphetamine after police raided a home at Creswell.

Prosecuting solicitor Emma Shooter told the court Harding was also caught by police just over a month later near North Road, Clowne, with more heroin and amphetamine.

Ms Shooter said: A drugs warrant was executed on October 13 at an address where Harding was present as a friend of the home owner.

The defendant revealed he had a green bag and a tin, according to Ms Shooter, which contained heroin and amphetamine and care was needed because there was a large quantity of syringes.

Ms Shooter added that two police officers later saw the defendant meeting with another person on November 30 and as police approached they were both seen getting into a vehicle.

Police carried out searches, according to Ms Shooter, but Harding grabbed a hand of one of the officers and took back an item they had taken from him and he put it in his mouth.

Ms Shooter said both police officers struggled with Harding to secure the exhibit and the defendant resisted being handcuffed.

The court also heard how a search of the vehicle uncovered amphetamine under a car seat and officers found four packets of powder.

Ms Shooter added that a pencil case with unused syringes was also found.

Harding pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing diamorphine and three counts of possessing amphetamine.

He also admitted wilfully obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty.

Defence solicitor David Gittins said the drugs had a total street value of 200 and were for Hardings personal use and he was not involved in any supplying.

Mr Gittins added that four years ago Harding weighed 30 stone and was told by his doctor that if he did not lose weight he could die and a friend advised him to take amphetamines to lose weight.

However, Mr Gittins explained that Harding subsequently slipped back into a long-standing heroin addiction.

Magistrates fined Harding 120 and ordered him to pay 85 costs and a 30 victim surcharge.

Kim Kardashian recently came under fire for a tweet she shared about the flu being great for weight loss. "The flu can be an amazing diet," she wrote in a post she later took down. "So happy it came in time for the Met lol #6lbsdown." She later shared two photos of her in a killer outfit with the caption, "Flu got me like."

Though Kardashian's comments were meant in jestshe did say "lol," after allpeople didn't take too kindly to them. For starters, the flu is no joking matterthousands of people die from it each year, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Not to mention, joking about rapid and unhealthy weight loss being "amazing" isn't funny. In fact, it's potentially triggering for Kardashian's followers who have struggled with disordered eating .

The flu may not seem like a big deal. You get a flu shot , you see a doctor if you get sick, and everything is fineright? While that's the case for many people, the truth is, somewhere between 12,000 and 56,000 die from the flu annually ( CDC estimates vary from year to year).

"Healthy kids and healtyh adults die of influenza ," David Beuther , M.D., a pulmonologist at National Jewish Health, tells SELF. "And younger people or healthy people tend not to recognize their own vulnerability. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands are hospitalized from it each year." (Note: A lot of people use the word flu when they're talking about stomach bugs and other viruses. While we're not sure what kind of flu Kardashian had, we're talking about influenza.)

And while you can expect to lose a little weight during an illness, losing too much isn't a good sign, Dr. Beuther says. "Whether you're talking about the influenza or a gastrointestinal virus, you're usually losing a lot of fluid and not eating as much," he says. "Most of that weight loss is dehydration." If you're able to compensate for all the fluids you're losing by drinking enough, you shouldn't lose more than a few pounds, Dr. Beuther says.

Losing more than that is a sign that your illness has gotten severeand extreme dehydration can lower your blood pressure or complicate existing medical problems, he says. So you should either drink more fluids or head to the hospital for an IV. "I would not encourage anyone to see how much weight they can lose during an illness," Dr. Beuther says. "If anything, they should be trying to put on weight."

"It's important to think about comments that you're making when you have that kind of a platform and that amount of followers," Claire Mysko, CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), tells SELF in response to Kardashian's joke. Mysko explains that eating disorders and disordered eating are at "epidemic numbers" in our country, so it's likely that a portion of Kardashian's followers are currently struggling with (or are at risk of struggling with) these behaviors.

"It also generally emphasizes the obsession around weight losswhen you're talking about losing weight from being sick," Mysko says. "It really, really emphasizes how skewed our thoughts and mindset around weight are in this cultureand that can be particularly dangerous for people who are struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating."

"If you see a comment like that from a celeb (or anywhere) and you find yourself making a lot of comparisons or getting into obsessive thoughts about food, weight, exercise, or body imagereach out," Mysko says. "It can be tough to distinguish when it's a problem, and I think comments like that from celebs really reinforce that by kind of making light of the fact that there's this general obsession in our culture around weight."

So why does this happen? Nutrition scientist Dr Tim Crowe revealed to news.com.au the real reasons why its so much easier to put on weight.

"The influence of hunger on weight regain is three-times stronger than a slowing of metabolism. Add the two together it appears almost inevitable that the lost weight will creep back on again for most people," Tim explained.

This means that because we are cutting down our food intake when we diet, we find were hungrier and thus more likely to eat more when we cut loose a little.

A recent study tested a new drug for treating diabetes on two separate groups.

High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets are all the rage right now and for good reason. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein and your body uses protein to build and repair tissues.

The results showed people on the drug, which works by making the kidneys produce more glucose which can help with weight loss, lost only a little bit more than the group who didnt take the drug.

This is because people who were taking the drug were hungrier and on average ate an extra 100 calories a day per kilogram of weight they lost.

Tim said this also applies to restrictive thinking and disallowing ourselves to have certain foods.

Regaining weight has little to do with poor self-control. Our bodies are primed to fight against weight loss. You can ignore hunger cues for a time, but they will persist for much longer than your willpower.

This is why its so important when you are trying to lose weight, not to starve yourself or put yourself on a too-restrictive diet.

By doing this you will crave food more and end up eating larger quantities.

Are you constantly hungry, dealing with cravings, experiencing various aches and pains and ready for a nap after eating? Do you want to shrink your waist line and feel better? Heck, do you really just want to feel better and lose weight as an afterthought?

Then its time to focus on your gut. And I dont mean what might be adding inches to your waistline. I literally mean your gut your intestines. You would think that it might be some other more worthy organ like the liver or the kidneys that has that dubious honor of making us feel better but it turns out it really is in your intestines your colon to be specific and the good gut bacteria that lives there that we want to nurture.

Evidence supports that an unhealthy gut microbiome may contribute to obesity.

Restoring the gut biome will help you lose weight. All your gut needs is more resistant starch. Eating resistant starch will help you body burn its stores of body fat.

As mentioned in my last blog, resistant starch (RS) is a type of fiber that resists digestion. Eating a small amount of resistant starch with every meal will not only keep you fuller longer, but it will prevent some of the starch in your meal from being digested.

This is a painless way to improve your health and it doesnt come in a pill or increase your food budget.

Eating foods high in resistant starch nourishes the healthy bacteria in your colon too. When the bacteria digests RS it makes a special compound called butyrate. Butyrate is like a soldier in your body, fighting cancer, making your colon wall stronger and reducing inflammation. Thats why a small, hot baked potato has .17 gms of resistant starch and a roasted and cooled one has 19.2 gms. Its also why preparing your own dried beans is far better than buying canned. And if you want a little RS boost, buy Great Northern beans instead of red beans. With summer on its way, Im thinking lots of cold salads: bean salad, quinoa salad and even potato salad. There are no dietary guidelines on the amount of resistant starch to consume but one source suggests that getting about 20 gms daily can help with weight loss, reduce the risk of colon cancer and improve post-meal blood sugars.

I plan on making a vichyssoise soup, a cold soup made with potatoes and leeks, next week and will share the recipe once I make it.

Desserts can also have RS if you either substitute a portion of the flour with potato starch or use raw oats. I like making fruit crisps for dessert because it checks the fruit box and using raw oats boosts the fiber and RS. Being mindful of portion size, you can still have a dessert and lose weight if you use the right ingredients and are mindful of your food choices throughout the day.

I believe RS will be a game changer for your health. Research supports that it improves cholesterol, blood sugars, insulin resistance and reduces the risk of colon cancer. Its found naturally in some foods and can be enhanced with proper preparation. And cooking these foods in bulk can save time in the kitchen and boost RS by letting them cool in your fridge. The fitness blogger, DJ, and overall star of Instagram, Hannah Bronfman, just declared a ban against shedding weight for her wedding day. Though Bronfman doesnt have much room to lose weight as it isher body is the toned goals of over 350kshe did pique our interest. I think self-love and self-care are important every day, and on a day you are marrying the love of your life, you should focus on feeling good and celebrating that love, says Bronfman.

Instead of overworking her body in preparation for the wedding, Bronfman is slowing things down and healing her body through several other methods. Planning a wedding is stressful for so many reasons already, so instead of focusing on how your body looks, try to focus on how you feel. Considering how stressful it is to be planning a wedding, the last thing that youd want to do is pile on added exercise and strain on your body. We can get behind this movement if it means a little extra curve in our dress.
