3 big fat lies about losing weight – Bangor Daily News
Here are 3 big, fat lies about losing weight that are responsible for unsuccessful weight loss.
Even famous cable TV doctor, Dr. Nowzardan, who treats the people on TLCs My 600 Pound Life, believes carbs make people fat. He asserts his patients must stop eating carbs. I dont think Dr. Now really wants his patients to stop eating carbs, but rather to cut out the heavily processed, refined carbs.
Carbohydrates shouldnt be removed from your diet. If you were to stop eating carbs, youd see a big, gratifying weight loss in a very short period. Weight loss isnt necessarily fat loss. Losing weight from cutting carbs is mostly water loss because it forces the body to use glycogen stored in the muscles and liver for fuel.
It is not sustainable. Carbs are an essential nutrient. If you starve your body of its favorite source of energy it is forced to covert protein to energy. It can do that, but not well and not without side effects. Side effects include constipation, headaches, nausea and bad breath, and in extreme cases, kidney disease.
Carbs should make up 45 65% of your total daily calories, but the carbs should come mainly from fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. For the most part try to limit your total carb intake of refined carbs such as foods with added sugars and white flour to about 10% of your total daily carbs.
Gluten-free must be a great way to lose weight because everybody is doing it, right? Wrong, going gluten-free offers no weight loss or health benefits to most of the human population because most humans dont have Celiac disease or are even gluten sensitive.Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder which causes antibodies to react to gluten as though it were a toxic substance, which to people with Celiac, it is.
Gluten is a substance in wheat and many other types of grain including barley and rye. People with Celiac disease must avoid it because its harmful to their digestive system. For the rest of us, its harmless and it has no adverse effect on our weight unless its part of a diet too high in calories in general.
People with this disease must eat gluten-free to maintain a healthy diet, but somehow the science got perverted by claims that, I finally lost weight when I went gluten-free, or Go gluten-free to get rid of that belly fat. The claims, and therefore, a gluten-free diet are not supported by science.
Major manufacturers of food jumped on the gluten-free wagon. Its a great marketing tool in a time when people are trying to reduce their consumption of processed carbs, putting gluten-free on the front of the package makes their products appear healthier than they really are.
If your doctor hasnt diagnosed you with Celiac disease, enjoy grains with gluten. You can lose weight and it wont make your belly any fatter than any other foods.
The body needs large amounts of 3 macronutrients daily for good health. They are protein, carbohydrates, and fat. You read that right fat is a macronutrient and necessary for good health even though in the 90s it was identified as your bodys biggest enemy.
Fat got its bad reputation because it was a misunderstood nutrient. First, it had more calories 9 gram for gram, unlike protein and carbs with only 4 calories per gram. Therefore, cutting out fat was an expeditious way to reduce calories thus creating a deficit necessary to lose weight. It was also linked with heart disease.
Just like gluten-free, food manufacturers catered to the publics fat phobia by making fat-free versions of all our favorite foods. Many had more calories than the original versions with fat because lots of sugar was added to make them palatable after removing the fat. There was absolutely nothing healthier about the fat-free versions.
Fat is good for you, just not too much, but then too much of anything isnt good for you. There are 3 kids of fat in order of least to healthiest they are, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and monounsaturated fat. Healthy diets get 30% of total calories from fat, preferably the monounsaturated fats found in foods such as olive oil, avocados, and nuts. Ideally saturated fat, the fat found in animal sources and is solid at room temperature, should be limited to about 10% of total fat calories.

READERS WRITE: Want to lose weight – subtract and add calories – Southernminn.com
The nation-wide "number one resolution" that the majority of people make every Jan. 1 is to lose some weight. After 53 years of dieting, I have found 16 healthy, successful steps to share. Basically, it's as simple as adding and subtracting. In order to lose weight, one must subtract or consume fewer calories than what the body needs, while at the same time add the calories that are vital and necessary to one's health. Here are the steps to losing, and then maintaining, ones ideal weight:
1) Ask the Lord to help change your eating habits (Jeremiah 4:13).
2) Subtract by not eating the food while preparing meals.
3) Subtract by serving yourself smaller portions of food.
4) Subtract and refrain from all second helpings of food.
5) Subtract by backing away from the table before one feels full. 6) Subtract by putting all leftovers in the refrigerator. 7) Subtract by eliminating all foods high in sugar, salt, and fat.
8) Subtract by avoiding restaurants and fast food shops.
9) Subtract by grocery shopping when one is not hungry.
10) Subtract by fasting now and then, or even fasting one or two meals a week.
11) Add more fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains when preparing meals. 12) Add by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
13) Add by eating a piece of fruit when famished.
14) Add by drinking pure concentrated fruit juices to "perk" you up.
15) Add low sugar, low fat, and low salt recipes to your favorite menu file and using them weekly.
16) Add supplements such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, etc. to your daily diet.
So how do I manage to keep the weight off and still feel strong and healthy? With God's help, I subtract and add calories.
"Then God said 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of the earth... it shall be food for you'... behold it was very good." (Genesis 1:29,31)
So to be successful, one must make these steps an on-going lifestyle habit, not a start-and-stop habit.

Trying to lose 10 pounds? Its not always all rainbows, unicorns and butterflies. And, its certainly not donuts, cake and cookies, either! But, it is possible, if youre committed to real consistent changes.
The happy news is that if you focus on consistency in a few key areas, you just may be surprised how relatively easy it is to accomplish weight loss. To get you started, here are a few tried and true tips:
You may have heard that you need to drink water to lose weight before, but have you actually implemented it? Start now! When you begin the day with a tall glass of water, you may just be more inclined to go for a healthier breakfast or even hit the gym. Plus, morning hydration can also help you stay regular.
Drinking water is important for all cellular functions, and hydration aids in weight loss. Its common to suffer from that 3 p.m. slump due to dehydration alone, and many people confuse thirst for hunger.
So, up your energy in the afternoon and skip the chips by staying hydrated all day. Aim for 64 ounces a day (its a good goal for all of us, even if specific needs vary) and of course, skip the soda.
Protein is needed to build and repair muscles, for blood clotting and it also helps us to stay satisfied. Studies show that eating protein for breakfast may help increase your satiety (how satisfied you feel) through the day and help prevent nighttime noshing. Ever wonder why on the days you skip breakfast, you cant stop eating cookies at night? Lack of adequate protein may be to blame.

Protein aids in satiety by affecting the hormones which control hunger and the rate at which food empties from our stomachs. It also has the highest thermal effect of food (TEF), meaning it burns the most calories during digestion, versus carbs and fat. At a loss of where to begin in the morning? Try these high-protein breakfast options and remember to choose lean protein sources.
Green veggies get five gold stars. They are packed with fiber and water volume, both of which help you to stay full and regular. They're also loaded with antioxidants which help fight disease and inflammation, and, of course, theyre low in calories.
Fighting inflammation with antioxidants can aid in weight loss. Foods that are high in the antioxidants vitamin C, E and beta carotene may help reduce fat storage by regulating your body's use of the hormone insulin. Greens are an excellent source, but you can also find these compounds in citrus fruits, almonds and sweet potatoes.
My favorite greens are broccoli rabe and spinach, and I recommend getting in greens at least twice a day. During meals, fill up on greens first, and youll find that you naturally begin to eat less of the perhaps more "unhealthy" parts of your plate.

Eating fat doesnt make you fat (overeating anything of course will cause you to gain weight). Actually, it can help make you thin. Fat tastes good and helps to keep you satisfied. It also helps you burn fat by taking fat out of your cells, so you can use it for energy.
RELATED: Why fat in your diet is good for weight loss, glowing skin and more
As with any food, portion control is key, but be sure to get fat in consistently throughout the day (about 30 percent of your calories should come from fat). Instead of having a big apple for a snack, have a small apple with two teaspoons of almond butter. And, instead of sugar-laden, fat-free salad dressing go for olive oil and vinegar mixed with herbs and spices.
Listening to your body is key when it comes to losing weight. Focusing on whole, real foods packed with protein, healthy fat, fiber and antioxidants is crucial (and Id rather you overeat these foods than chips and dip, and cupcakes) but learning how much to eat by listening to your body is going to be key when it comes to losing weight.
I teach my clients to rate their hunger using the "hunger quotient." This is the number (related to a feeling) to describe how hungry you truly are. You want to aim to be between a 6 and a 4 at the beginning and end of your meals and snacks. A 6 is slightly hungry and a 4 is slightly satisfied. When meals and snacks are skipped during the day, HQ gets thrown off and it is easy to end up making poor food choices and overeating.
Stress affects every aspect of your health, including your weight. Even exercise probably wont do the trick if stress is throwing your hormones out of whack. Prolonged excess stress not only causes an imbalance in your hormones which leads to weight in the mid-section, but it also increases free radicals (think inflammation), and it can increase emotional eating.
Managing your stress can have a huge effect on your weight-loss efforts. Meditation, even if for five minutes, has been shown to reduce anxiety with every session practiced. So while adding a new fitness routine is vital to your weight-loss goals and chugging water is too, add a stress management tool for maximum effectiveness.
