How to lose weight and overcome food addictions | Fox News – Fox News

I honestly cant remember a time when I wasnt consumed by thoughts of food. My childhood memories of places and events are all linked to what was served, what I could get away with, and I struggled with my weight throughout my teenage years into early adulthood.
It wasnt until my 20s after I got sober from drug and alcohol addiction that my weight spiraled out of control and I began seriously considering making a change. I distinctly remember thinking, how is it that I can harness the resources to get my Ph.D. at one of the top brain and cognitive programs in the country, but I cant stop eating food I know is killing me?Where is the disconnect?
BEING SLIGHTLY OVERWEIGHT MAY CUT YEARS OFF YOUR LIFE
And yet, I failed again and again at every popular diet on the market until I finally understood, through my study of the brain, that the only way to bring my eating under control was to apply the exact same principles that had helped me successfully get and stay sober to my perspective on eating.
That a-ha moment led me to design Bright Lines, a plan based on four non-negotiable boundaries sugar, flour, meals and quantities that work to make eating foods that get and keep you slim automatic.
Through my research, I have found that flour and sugar rapidly re-wire the brain to make you eat more of them. They literally hijack the organ to make the body block weight loss.Without those ingredients, in the span of about six months, the brain heals from food addiction and insatiable hunger, and overpowering cravings go away.
MEET THE WOMAN WHO WHIPPED MAMA JUNE INTO SHAPE
The second two Bright Lines meals and quantities help make eating the right amount of food at the right time automatic. These tenets also help make turning down the wrong foods in between second nature, which is essential in a culture where food is present from the conference room to the cup holder in your car. Once a behavior is automatic, it requires no willpower.
For this reason, I strongly discourage people from exercising while they are losing weight. Lets put it this way: For some people, forced exercise can deplete willpower, leaving them vulnerable to making poor food choices that do more harm to the healing brain than the workout did good. Our data shows that the people who insist on exercising while doing Bright Line Eating lose weight the slowest.

But I will caution you: This diet is not for everyone. If you are someone who was able to do Weight Watchers 10 years ago, and then lose the weight and keep it off long term, that puts you in the 1 percent of dieters, and you dont need Bright Line Eating. But for the 99 percent of people who have yo-yod for years, Bright Lines may be the solution.

Can Carb Cycling Help You Lose Weight? – Health.com

Youve heard plenty of mixed reviews for low-carb diets. But what about carb cycling? Thetrendpopular with body builders and some athletesis generating buzz as a weight loss method. Heres the lowdown on how carb cycling works; its potential benefits; and a simpler, less strict alternative that I recommend for many of my clients.
While there isnt one standard protocol, carb cycling typically involves alternating lower-carb days with higher-carb days. Typically fat intake increases on lower-crab days, and decreases on higher-carb days; while protein intake remains consistent.
Many advocates recommend this regimen: On days when you do strength training, consume a higher amount of carbs (say 200 grams), a low amount of fat, and a moderate amount of protein. On days when you do a cardio workout, eat a moderate amount of carbs (about 100 grams), protein, and fat. And on rest days, eat fewer carbs (30 grams), a high amount of fat, and a moderate amount of protein.
Another approach involves keeping both protein intake and fat intake fairly consistent, and modifying only your carbohydrates. With this method, lower-carb days are also lower-calorie days.
Proponents of carb cycling claim that the eating pattern helps increase muscle mass, decrease body fat, and improve fitness performance. But research on thediet is limited.
One 2013 study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, looked at the effects of intermittent carb and calorie restriction in 115 overweight women aged 20 to 69, all of whom had a family history of breast cancer. The women were randomly assigned to one of three groups for three months. The first group consumed a calorie-restricted, low-carb diet two days per week. The women in the second group followed the same diet, but were allowed to eat unlimited amounts of protein and healthy fats (such as lean meat, olives, and nuts) on the low-carb days. The third group followed a standard, calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet seven days a week.
Researchers found that the women in both low-carb groups had better results: They lost roughly9 pounds on average, compared to about 5 pounds in the Mediterranean group. Insulin resistance also decreased by 22% percent among the standard low-carb dieters; and 14% percent among those allowed extra protein and fat on low-carb dayscompared to just 4% among the Mediterranean dieters. (The results were particularly significant for the study participants, as losing weight and lowering insulin resistance may help prevent breast cancer.)
While this study didn't involve the same carb cycling approach used by body builders and athletes, it does offer some insight into the potential benefits of limiting carbs part-time. But is doing so practical? Slashing carbs, even a few days a week, needs to be sustainable in order to generate lasting results.
The authors of that 2013 study also found that a higher percentage of women on the low-carb diets experienced constipation, headaches, bad breath, light-headedness, and food fixation. These unpleasant side effects parallel what I've seen with my clients who severely restrict their carb intake. In my experience, the side effectsalso the reason many low carb-dieters either give up, or wind up binging on forbidden foods.
RELATED: How to Keep the Carbs and Still Lose Weight
One of the main philosophies behind carb cycling is limiting carbs when the body doesn't need them as much. In a nutshell, carbs serve as fuel (like gasoline in your car) to help cells perform their jobs. Eating a large amount of carbs on days when youre not very active doesnt make much sense, because your body requires less fuel (much like how your car needs less gas for a ride across town compared to a road trip). Carbs that arent burned for fuel create a surpluswhich can prevent weight loss, or lead to weight gain.
On the flip side, a carb limit of 30 grams is very low, even on less active days. Thats the amount of carbs in one cup of broccoli, one whole apple, and five baby carrots. For a better balance, I advise my clients to practice what I call carb matching"or aligning your carb intake with your energy needs, which may vary from day to day, or morning to afternoon.
This approach essentially involves eating larger portions of clean, whole food carbs to support more active hours; and curbing carbs when you expect you'll be less active. For example, if you're planning to do a morning workout, have oatmeal topped with a sliced banana for breakfast beforehand. But if you're headed to the office to sit at a desk for several hours, a veggie and avocado omelet with a side of berries would be a more appropriate a.m. meal.
In my experience with clients, carb matching helps with weight loss and improves fitness performance, while supporting all-day energy, and supplying a wide range of nutrients. It also makes sense. My pro athlete clients, who train or perform several hours a day, require more carbs than my CEO clients, who may fit in a morning workout, then sit in meetings the remainder of the day.
Carb matching also involves aligning your carb needs with your age, height, ideal weight, sex, and occupation. After all, a young, tall man with an active job and an ideal weight of 185 pounds is going to have a higher carb requirement than an older, petite woman with a sedentary job and an ideal weight of 135 pounds.
While carb cycling involves drastic shifts, carb matching is all about creating balance, and what I call the Goldilocks effectnot too little, and not too much. If youve tried carb cycling, and it either hasnt worked for you, or doesnt seem like a strategy you can stick with, try moderating your carb intake based on your activity level instead. And regardless of which approach you try, stick with these two important rules of thumb:
1) Always make quality a priority by choosing fresh, whole foods. (And remember not all carbs are created equal.)
2) Listen to your body! Its cues are pretty good at guiding you toward a "just right" balance.

How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism – The Good Men Project (blog)

Losing weight and keeping it off can be a struggle. Especially if you have an underactive thyroid. Your metabolism has slowed down and youre almost always feeling tired.
In this video were looking at 4 steps required to successfully lose weight with hypothyroidism. . .
If your medication is not helping to correct thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible.
Consult your prescribing physician to help determine what type of medication is better for you, and also find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, dessicated thyroid is a useful alternative that is reportedly much better tolerated.
There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Choose whatever is easier for you to have it on a fasting stomach.
I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume.
Cutting back on added sugar is the most simple and direct way to cut out excess empty calories.
This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks, alcohol, white bread, most cereals, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarkets health food aisle.
Now its unrealistic (and unfair) to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits.
Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use.
>
If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, veggies and a source of protein should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving.
The main benefit of protein is that its much more satiating than both fat and carbs.
That means it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too.
STUDY http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/88, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15 Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and cut desire for late-night snacks by half (3, 4).
Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle-building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise.
Nutrient-dense meals are even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common.
Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for healthy carbs if you so choose (such as rice or potato).
Selenium and zinc are two critical nutrients directly involved in thyroid function and metabolism.
Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. Thats the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs.
Its thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine.
For this reason, its fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium-rich foods, such as:
Brazil nuts Tuna and sardines Beef and chicken Eggs Legumes
Zinc is an essential mineral required to regulate TSH, which is a hormone from the brain that controls how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces.
In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss).
While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, its still recommended to eat a variety of zinc-rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish Beef and chicken Legumes, nuts, and seeds Milk and yoghurt.
Okay, so I hope you found those 4 tips useful In all honesty, Ive only JUST scratched the surface, here, there are certainly more steps to follow on after these ones. To find out more you can click the link in the description or on the youtube card where Ive written about hypothyroidism and much more detail.

10 reasons you can’t lose the baby weight | Fox News

If youre a new mom, you might be counting down the days when you can trade in your maternity pants for your favorite pair of skinny jeans.
Yet experts say just as it took you nine months to put on the weight, losing it can take several months or more. If the weight isnt coming off as fast as you want it to or your weight loss has stalled, there are several factors that could be hindering your efforts. Here are 10.
1. You weighed too much before or during pregnancy More than 50 percent of women are overweight or obese when they get pregnant, and only about a third gain the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
If you became pregnant while you were overweight or if you gained more than you should have, it can make it that much more challenging to lose the weight. In fact, women who gain more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy are more likely to keep the weight on even up to 15 years postpartum, a meta-analysis in the journal Nutrition Reviews found.
Although you cant go back in time, its important to recognize that it could take you longer.
HOW TAKING A HOT BATH COULD HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT
2. Youre not getting enough sleep Sleep is hard to come by with a new baby, but when you are sleep-deprived, the hormones that affect appetite are unbalanced. In fact, people who slept for only four hours ate more calories the following day than when they had enough sleep, a study presented at the American Heart Associations scientific sessions in 2011 found.
Sleep deprivation causes your body to up its production of ghrelin, which increases hunger, and slow down its production of leptin, which regulates appetite.
If your partner can take a feeding at night or you can catch a nap during the day, it can help you get the rest you need.
Also, eating at the exact same time every day will regulate your hormones and your appetite. Although your babys sleep schedule is inconsistent, you can actually train your body to maintain a consistent schedule, Dr. Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic and a New York Times bestselling author of 50 More Ways To Soothe Yourself Without Food, told Fox News.
3. Youre not being patient enough Trying to stack up to those celebrities who are back in their bikinis two weeks after giving birth isnt healthy. The time it takes to lose the baby weight is different for each woman, but it will take at least six months, if not more, Angela Ginn-Meadow, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Baltimore, Maryland, and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Fox News.
Dont beat yourself up, but do make sure your diet and exercise habits are consistent and realistic for your life.
It might not happen overnight, but small, simple steps to getting back will be key, Ginn-Meadow said.
If you think youve been doing everything right but your weight loss has stalled, seek advice from a registered dietitian nutritionist, who may be able to help.
6 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY TO SOMEONE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT
4. Youre skipping meals Between feedings, diaper changes and an unpredictable schedule, making time to sit down to a meal can feel like an afterthought. Yet if you dont make regular meals a priority, youll feel irritable and more likely to eat more at the next meal. In fact, fasting is linked to abdominal weight gain and may increase your risk for type-2 diabetes, a study out of The Ohio State University suggests.
5. Youre hitting the gym too hard You might think it will take hours at the gym to lose the baby weight, but thats not the case. In fact, doing too much too fast can put you at risk for injury, pelvic organ prolapse a condition that causes the pelvic organs such as the bladder or uterus to bulge out of the vagina, and even halt your weight loss efforts.
A lot of cardio also stimulates your appetite to increase to match it and sometimes to exceed it, Leah Keller, a pre- and post-natal fitness expert in San Francisco, California, and creator of The Dia Method, a prenatal and postnatal fitness program, told Fox News.
Instead of pushing yourself to do a HIIT class when you get the all-clear to exercise again, resistance training that targets the major muscle groups is the most effective way to torch calories. Aim for 25 minutes, twice a week.
Cardio isnt off limits, but make sure its low impact especially when you start to exercise again. Then as you feel stronger, you can move onto intervals on the elliptical or bike. As you push the heart rate up and down, you get more benefit long-term both for your cardiovascular fitness and calorie burn, Keller said.
MULTITASKING MOM BREAST-FEEDS WHILE SHE WORKS OUT
6. You have a thyroid issue Up to 30 percent of postpartum women likely have thyroid dysfunction due to an iodine deficiency, Dr. Prudence Hall, founder of The Hall Center in Santa Monica, California, told Fox News.
During pregnancy, your baby takes iodine from you, which in turn can cause hypothyroidism, a disorder whereby the thyroid gland doesnt make enough thyroid hormone. After you give birth, symptoms like fatigue, depression and weight gain can show up.
If you suspect that you have a problem with your thyroid, ask your doctor to run a comprehensive thyroid panel, which includes TSH, free T3, free T4, and reverse T3 and the thyroid antibodies. If the test determines there is an issue, your doctor may prescribe iodine and a thyroid medication. Theres also some evidence of women reversing their thyroid problems through diet.
7. Youre eating the wrong foods To lose weight, you need to eat meals that regulate your blood sugar and keep you feeling satiated. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats throughout the day to fill you up, but be sure to keep empty calories to a minimum.
We all love treats, we all love indulgent foods. But those occasional foods really need to be once or twice a week they dont need to be a habit, Ginn-Meadow said.
5 CRAZY NEW WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT
8. Youre snacking at night You might get a hankering for a snack after your babys middle of the night feeding, but those extra calories can add up. Instead, drink a cup of chamomile or cinnamon tea, which studies suggest may lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.
9. You have a leaky gut Breastfeeding causes low levels of estrogen, which surprisingly can affect the GI tract and lead to intestinal hyperpermeability, or leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when tight junctions that line the inside of the intestines open and allow undigested food particles and pathogens through. Research suggests that this increased permeability in the gut is linked to increased visceral, or deep, fat.
When the GI tract goes out and doesnt digest food as well, thats a major cause for weight gain, Hall said.
To boost your gut health and lose weight, try probiotics, along with digestive enzymes, eliminate gluten, minimize dairy and of course, eat a healthy diet, she said.

10. Youre eating your feelings When youre sleep deprived and feel overwhelmed and stressed out, its common to rummage through the pantry for something to make yourself feel better. Yet if you dont break that habit, it can prevent you from losing weight.
Instead of turning to food to feel better, have a list of healthy activities you can do when youre trying to cope with your feelings.
That might include putting your baby in the stroller and taking a brisk walk, signing up for a mommy and me Yoga class, journaling, or simply escaping to the bathroom to take a few deep breaths for a moment of peace. Five minutes away of [or] getting a few moments to yourself can [be] so refreshing, Albers said.

How these 2 sisters lost 245 pounds, combined – Today.com

pin
These sisters take sibling rivalry to the next level: They recently competed to lose weight, and wound up dropping 245 pounds together while drastically changing their relationships with food.
It wasnt as difficult as I thought. Basically, you just took everything momma told you all your life and do it, Jacquee Broaddus, who lost 80 pounds, told TODAY.
Her sister, Jessee Baldwin, who lost 165 pounds, agreed.
The changes I have found have a lot to do with realizing I am worth something. I am worth saving, said Baldwin.
While the sisters gained the weight in different ways, they lost it by doing the same thing.
Broaddus, 36, was thin most of her life and enjoyed a diet that included cheese fries and nachos. She was slightly overweight when she got married, but didnt feel too unhealthy.
After having six children, she failed to lose the baby weight and at 5 feet 7 inches tall, she weighed 228 pounds.
When Jacquee Broaddus saw that her sister was successfully losing weight, she and her husband started watching what they ate and lost weight, too.
RELATED: 5 easy steps that helped her lose over 70 pounds
Those cheese fries caught up to me and I just couldnt eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted anymore. But I just never changed my eating habits, she said.
Her sisters story is a little different. She remembers weighing 200 pounds in third grade. Even though she played volleyball, basketball and softball in high school, and basketball in college, she weighed about 300 pounds.
Jessee Baldwin was overweight since she was in third grade, but she's dropped 165 pounds in the last two years.
RELATED: 7 women on what it's really like to lose over 100 pounds
I cant even imagine how big I would have been if I didnt play sports, she said. I was huge and very uncomfortable running up and down the court.
She tried everything from a lemon juice and maple syrup cleanse to the cabbage soup diet. At her heaviest, Baldwin, 38, weighed 370 pounds. But it was a late night chat with her then 5-year-old daughter that encouraged Baldwin to make a change. At 11 p.m., she heard Katie crying. When Baldwin asked Katie what was wrong, she said:
Mommy, youre not healthy and Im scared."
After that night in 2015, Baldwin called a health coach to lose weight. She followed a meal plan, which included meal replacements (like shakes or bars) or meals every two to three hours. After she lost some weight, she switched to eating all meals that were low-carb, high-protein and loaded with veggies.
We follow and create healthy habits. People can pretty much lose weight with any program out there, but if you dont change your relationship with food, if you dont create healthy habits, it will never last, Baldwin said.
In a year, Jacquee and Chuck Broaddus both lost weight, with Jacquee losing 80 pounds and Chuck dropping 110.
RELATED: Combined, this couple lost 298 pounds in a year by following these 3 steps
After she lost some weight, she visited her sister, who lives outside of Houston, Texas. When Broaddus saw that her older sister was slimming down, the sibling rivalry kicked in and she told Baldwin:
My goodness, youre getting smaller than me. That cant happen.
Baldwin, who lives in Redding, California, had just started working as a health coach and was looking for her first client. Broaddus was still nursing so she wasnt sure if she could cut too many calories, but her husband, Chuck, 46, volunteered to be first. Within six months, he lost 100 pounds. The 5-foot-8-inch man dropped another 10 pounds and has maintained his 170-pound weight since the middle of 2016. At the same time, Broaddus followed the same diet without the meal replacements and lost 80 pounds.
I guess it kind of took my sister to kick me in the rear, Broaddus said.
The 5-foot-10-inch Baldwin is down to 205 pounds and plans to lose more and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The sisters provided this advice to help others interested in losing weight:
Baldwin encourages people to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night and drink half their body weight in ounces of water. Creating many healthy habits makes it easier for people to stick with healthy eating.
In only two years, Jessee Baldwin lost 165 pounds and hopes to lose more.
When Broaddus nursed her children, she craved sugary foods and ate candy bars to satiate that desire. But Baldwin recommended she try something new: When a craving strikes, drink a glass of water. If your body still craves food after the water, then eat the candy bar. But Broaddus found that most of the time, she wasnt hungry.
I dont need it. I just wanted it because its there, said Broaddus. I was eating mainly out of boredom.
Losing weight takes a lot of hard work and the more you have to lose, the harder you have to work. Thats why Broaddus advises others to begin now.
Dont wait until you are well over 200 pounds. Start today, said Broaddus.

6 ways to lose more weight as you age – Fox News

As we age, our metabolism slows, making weight loss that much trickier. The major reason for this change? Decreasing muscle mass: After age 20, our muscle mass decreases about 1 to 2 percent per year, Jennifer Christman, a dietitian at Medifast, told Fox News.
The more lean muscle we have, the higher our metabolism is, because muscle is more metabolically active than fat, Lauren Blake, a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explained to Fox News.
6 MORNING HABITS THAT CAN JUMP-START YOUR WEIGHT LOSS
But if youre trying to shed those extra pounds, is there any way to get around this slower metabolism? Fox News spoke to Christman and Blake to get their tips:
1. Weight train. To prevent the slowing of metabolism that comes with muscle loss, try to maintain that muscle through exercise, including resistance training and weight training, Christman said.
That doesnt mean hulking out in the gym every day, Blake explained. It just means engaging those muscles so that youre preventing that loss. Great exercises can include push-ups, yoga and Pilates, Blake said.
YES, YOU CAN EAT CARBS AND STILL LOSE WEIGHT
2. Get enough calories. You may think slashing calories will help keep your weight down, but thats not the case, Blake said. If youre chronically under-eating, your body does not have the energy it needs to maintain itself, she explained. Instead, itll break down energy from lean muscle mass, further slowing your metabolism.
3. Dont skip meals. Eating continuously throughout the day helps your body keep burning fuel effectively, Blake said. Aim for at least three meals per day.
5 CRAZY NEW WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT
4. Eat enough protein. To maintain your muscle mass and keep your metabolism high, be sure to get enough protein at meals about 1-1.3 grams per kilogram of weight, Christman said. For a 150-pound woman, that would mean about 68-86 grams of protein per day (one egg has about 7 grams of protein). Make sure the protein is from high quality sources, such as lean meats, fish and beans, Christman advised.
Blake agreed, noting that protein also helps balance our blood sugar, which helps prevent weight gain and can keep us full longer.
5. Drink water. Research shows that if youre dehydrated, you burn fewer calories, Blake said. Make sure to drink water throughout the day.

6. Get your hormone levels checked. Women may want to go to the doctor to get their hormone levels checked, as they could impact weight in post-menopausal women, Christman explained. Your doctor can help you decide whether you need to regulate your hormones.
