Getting rid of some old friends might come as more of a surprise.

Yet losing friends is a well-documented side-effect of losing a lot of weight. A study by the Detroit Free Press reported that losing weight can be enormously alienating to friends and partners of the newly skinny person.

Why? Because its not just the outside of yourself that youre changing.

Losing weight means changing your routine. It means letting go of certain eating habits, becoming more active and altogether making adjustments to the way that you live your life.

If your friendships are centred around certain rhythms and routines, disrupting them can be difficult for other people. After all, youve decided to lose weight, but they might not have done. You cant expect people who love you to automatically want to climb into the lycra because you are.

Ive lost track of the number of times Ive had newly slim friends turn their noses up at dinner parties, or refuse to come to the pub, because of their fitness kick.

Its great for them, really great. But it feels like a big slap in the face to act like its the right way to be. And it can come across as disrespectful to all the fun times you previously shared together.

The other major issue is one of expectation. Just because youve decided your body should change, doesnt mean that you should make anyone else feel that they should too.

Youve discovered something that makes you really happy. But that doesnt mean anyone else wants to join in. And however well-intentioned it is, asking someone if theyd like to come to Weight Watchers with you is always rude.

What you eat is not fundamentally interesting to anyone other than yourself. Try hard to remember that. Its astonishing how few people do. Yes, it might be exciting to be able to make pancakes with oats and banana, but its not fair to spend hours going on about it. Ive occasionally caught myself yapping about my favourite bootcamp class and realised that I am in dire danger of becoming the kind of person that I hate.

Engaged people who talk only about their wedding, pregnant people whose only topic of conversation is their foetus: its all part of the same problem. Having a focus can make it difficult to remember that theres a big wide world around you.

The difference between boring wedding or baby obsessed friends is that at least those are arguably less emotionally loaded areas than weight.

One of the worst habits that Ive observed in friends whove lost more significant amounts of weight is the way that they talk about their old bodies with complete vitriol.

Talking about how huge you were before or describing yourself as fat, when you wouldnt have done so before, can end up being pretty hurtful especially if your friends are now bigger than you. It might not be intended and an insult but thats certainly how it might land.

After a significant weight loss, Ive known women to consider themselves to be different people. Thats their prerogative, but that doesnt mean that its time to start slagging off the old version.

Your friends liked that version. Your friends shared pizzas and nights out and long tipsy conversations with that person. And of course, theyll learn to love the new you, whos more into wheatgrass shots than tequila ones. But theyre not going to get a chance to adjust to your new lifestyle if you bombard them with it, and especially not if, in doing so, you make them feel judged.

BLUE ISLAND, Illinois -- In 2011, Rafael Zuniga weighed over 800 pounds. His weight was a lifelong battle that spiraled out of control.

Over the past six years, he has lost500 pounds. In theory, he did it by himself. But he'll tell you he wasn't alone. It was an app that got him on the path to living again.

Zuniga, 45,was once confined to his Chicago-area home after drinking and eating away his life.

Stress from work as a real estate adjuster and a bad break up left him at an all-time high of 831 pounds. Alcoholand fast food were his best friends.

"Im always thinking Ive got to lose a couple hundred pounds and Ill be back in the mix," he says. But it wasn't a couple hundred pounds. My weight doubled. I was in shock. As stupid as it sounds, I was in shock."

Rock bottom

"When I was unable to keep cleaning myself, I guess that was my rock bottom," he says.

In July of 2011, he was taken to the hospital and labeled morbidly obese. He was fighting lymphdema, hypertension, and cellulitis among other things.

It was a turning point forZuniga.

"It was a beautiful day out and I had seen everybody. Life was passing me by," hesaid.

That is when Zuniga decided to change his path of physical and financial ruin to one of wellness. After researching weight loss, he discoveredthe app "LoseIt!"

Zuniga'sgoal was to weigh250 pounds and travel the world.

"The image of me just being by an ocean, man, that helped me out tremendously, he says.

How the weight loss app changed his life

Zuniga uses the app to count his calories, track his meals, and seek support from other users trying to lose weight. The app teaches him to eat smarter, he says.

But he has also been exercising. At first, it meant the smallest of movements.

"I was sitting at the edge of my bed doing sit ups. I refused to believe that I was disabled, he says.

Zuniga does cardio five times a week and lifts weights two to four times a week. He eats a high-protein diet, cuts out the carbs, and counts every calorie he eats.

And he has not had any surgicalprocedure to lose the weight. There is no more alcohol and he does take a prescribed appetite suppressant.

The real motivator? A vacation

In 2014, Zuniga's dream came true. Labeling himself as"skinny for him," he was down to 400 pounds,-- so his father booked him a business class seat to the Dominican Republic.

Over the past three years, Zuniga has shed another 100 pounds bringing his overall weight loss in excess of 500 pounds.

Right now, he'd like to lose another 50 and get his doctors more comfortable with the idea of double knee replacements for his severe osteoarthritis. Removing his excess skin might get him close, but insurance doesn't cover the procedure.

Zuniga is just the beginning of the rest of his life. Clean living with the help of an app is opening a whole new world for him.

Spring is here and people, both women and men, are checking themselves out to see what needs to be done to get the perfect beach body. It may be a major renovation or some work in specific areas.

If you think your body is flawed it doesnt help to be looking at highly photoshopped pics of stars. Comparing your body to any one of Americas first family of reality TV, the Kardashians, with their surgically enhanced extreme coke bottle shapes discourages some and amuses others.

Men compare their bodies to professional athletes and find they come up short. Well, of course, because athletes bodies is a product of their jobs. They train hard and eat a special diet to be at the top of their game. Its not realistic for most men to think their lifestyle is going to be compatible with a professional athletes body,

We start life with no concept of our bodies. After a few months we start to make the connection, Hey this is part of me! We grow a little more and we learn to control our body parts. We love discovering what we can do with them and what they enable us to do. We dont think in terms of flaws. We saw nothing wrong with rolls and rolls on our little baby thighs.

As we grow we gain new perspectives through conditioning. Our family may make casual or joking comments about our bodies.

Hey, flat butt. Did your butt get so flat because youre always sitting on it?

Ugh, you have cankles.

These little statements often said in fun and with love get to us. We are further conditioned by the media. The men and women we see dont look like us. They look better and we want to measure up.

Our once perfectly good thighs that never failed to do what we needed them to do walk, play, run, get us where were going, etc we come to realize are unsightly. We find out from a magazine or a television commercial or a friend or family member that thighs that rub together are flawed or if they exceed a certain circumference they are ruining our quest for the perfect beach body.

Its not uncommon to think that self-hate or flaw-finding is a good thing. Some think that we cant improve unless we find out what needs improving and to do that we need to identify our flaws. I disagree on many levels. I dont want a media image to tell me how I need to look to be flawless. I dont want to waste my life trying to change what wont change and doesnt need to change. I dont want to hate what I have because its never going to be good enough.

I did that once. I dieted to fix my flaws. I got much too thin but didnt see how skinny Id become. All I saw were my flaws. I hoped that losing weight would get rid of them and it did make the flaws not as bad but they were still there. I wished I had the money to surgically remove my flaws and meanwhile, but I didnt (plus I dont like scalpels and stitches.)

I wanted to look and feel my best. It was hard to make choices that supported the goal of looking and feeling good when I hated parts of my body because they looked wrong. I often made choices that undermined my goal. I overate and chose the couch over any physical activity, even fun activities.

I believed that there really was no point in eating and exercising because no matter how thin I got, Id never look right. After wasting too much time hating myself for not being able to shape my body into flawless perfection and hating my body because it wasnt adequately moldable and thus flawless I changed my thinking.

I read an essay written by somebody who sounded just like me. I could have written that essay until I got to the part where she decided she wasnt flawed; her perceptions were flawed.

She described how writing that letter of apology helped her regain perception. There was nothing wrong with her body and it deserved her love and good care.She realized her body washer perfect beach body.

It just takes looking at it with a new perspective. Stop putting your body or body parts down because they dont look a certain way. Appreciate what you body or body parts do for you. Write yourself a letter of apology and treat yourself the way you would treat a beloved friend.

Do you need weight to have a perfect beach body? No you dont. but your body might benefit in looks and energy if you feed it well and give it regular physical activity.

Eventually, I realized my body was feeling sluggish with the garbage I was constantly feeding it, and my bank account was taking a hit.

I started cooking my own meals and found myself wasting a lot of time making one meal or getting bored of the four things I actually knew how to make.

So instead, I had to find easy tricks to minimize how how much I eat out, and its truly benefited both my waistline and my wallet.

If youre living by yourself, turning the oven on to make individual dishes may seem like a waste of time.

The easy solution to this is to make more of whatever meal you may be making (stuffed peppers, chicken parmesan, potato wedges, etc.).

Adding one more pepper or chicken breast will likely only take you 30 seconds to add to the pan, whereas making them individually every time can take 30 minutes.

You may not want to have chicken parmesan every night, so why not think of other ways to use the chicken?

You can cook some bare or differently seasoned chicken right alongside your gourmet chicken parmesan. You can then cut the chicken into smaller slices to be used in a salad, keep them whole and put it on a ciabatta bun for a sandwich or save it for a stew.

The point is, it saves a lot of time if the food is already cooked, so you just have to warm it up in the microwave.

Be sure youre not overcooking. Realistically, two to three pieces of the same meat should be sufficient to get you through the week.

If you overcook, you run the risk of having the food go bad. When that happens, you are essentially throwing your money in the trash.

I got into the habit of using mason jars to hold my meals. Theyre aesthetically appealing and can be better for salads to avoid soggy lettuce.

Mason jars can be used for virtually anything, but some common uses are: yogurt parfaits, fruit salads, vegetable salads (put the dressing on the bottom and separate it from the lettuce by using your other veggies, so your lettuce stays crisp) and pasta.

It may seem tedious, but going grocery shopping at the start and middle of the week can help ensure your food is fresh. Its amazing the difference in taste fresh food has.

Plus, if you anticipate going shopping mid-week, you know youll want to eat up as many fruits and veggies as you can to make the trip worthwhile. This alone can help you eat healthier.

When youre doubling your dishes, think about making some sweets for yourself since you already have the oven on. This can help save you from caving into cravings and ordering food you dont need.

Its okay to treat yourself in moderation it can help reduce those junk food binges. Bring your water bottle, a thermos with tea and a juice box to your study session or office to give you options while staying hydrated.

Bring your own lunches and dinners if you have lectures where youre usually hungry to keep your body nourished and at its peak performance.

Honestly, go onto Pinterest and search healthy meals for one or easy meals for beginners. The possibilities are endless.

I found some of my favorite recipes (balsamic chicken and baked carrots and potatoes) on Pinterest and they really are easy to make, but never fail to impress my guests.

Adding variety to your meals is so easy to do when you start thinking of different ways to use one particular item.

Theses strategies have helped me save money, all while improving my overall mood and health.

More than two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese, and recent research suggests many are increasingly fine with staying that way.

Researchers studied data from an ongoing, nationally representative survey of Americans' eating and lifestyle habits, specifically looking at people who responded to a question asking if they had attempted to lose weight during the past 12 months. The percentage of overweight and obese adults who answered "yes" had steadily declined over the past 30 years, the authors found, even as the percentage of overweight and obese adults likewise rose.

The changing trends suggest that, at the very least, Americans' perception of their own weight has gradually shifted in response to rising obesity rates, senior study author Dr. Jian Zhang, an epidemiologist at Georgia Southern University, told Vocativ in an email.

"Paralleled with the increasing prevalence of obesity, more and more adults compare themselves with their friends, coworkers, neighbors with heavier body weight, to maintain a positive image of their own," explained Zhang. This social comparison, according to a popular theory in psychology, allows some people to believe their weight is healthier than it actually may be, which then reduces the motivation to lose any.

From 1988 to 1994, for instance, 56 percent of overweight and obese people said they had tried to lose weight recently, compared to 49 percent of those asked between 2009 to 2014. And the drop was most significant among black women, the group of Americans who have seen their levels of obesity rise highest in recent years.

But perhaps the leading reason why Americans are giving up on weight loss is our collective realization of how futile it often is, Zhang said.

"It's hard to drop pounds, it's painful, many of us tried and failed, failed and tried, and finally failed to try any more," he said. Indeed, the vast majority of attempts will undoubtedly fail, or if they do succeed, only do so for a short time. And some research has shown this constant cycle of losing and regaining weight may itself be bad for our health. Currently, bariatric surgery is the only reliable way to lose weight, though it doesn't come without its risks.

Deb Burgard, a California psychologist and advocate of the Health at Every Size movement, a collaboration of health care professionals, academics, and patients who believe a healthy lifestyle can be achieved without focusing on a person's weight, thinks our growing hesitance to play the weight loss game could be seen in a positive light.

"As an eating disorders specialist, I work with people across the weight spectrum who are harmed by the prescription of weight loss," she said in an email. "That more people are aware of the unsustainability of trying to lose weight is only a problem for the weight cycling industry and the pharmaceutic industry."

Zhang, for his part, agrees that explicitly focusing on reducing obesity is a fool's errand for doctors and patients alike, though he does still consider it a public health priority.

"You cannot stop a train. The problem is hard to fix if it occurs, even identified early," he said. "The best way, most likely the only way, is to prevent it from happening. Let's do more to prevent obesity at its beginning, among kids, at home and in school. That is the right-time-right-person-and right-place strategy."

And even those of us worried about our weight now shouldn't obsess about the actual number on the scale, he added.

"I firmly believe we don't have to lose weight mindfully; building a healthy lifestyle and having it as a part of routine is the key. This will make your effort less painful and more effective," he said. "My definition of a healthy lifestyle is very simply eat less and keep moving, period."
