Trying to lose weight? The colder months might be the perfect time – The Durango Herald

Freezing temps are no excuse to give up on fitness. As it turns out, you might stand a better chance of losing weight when its cold.

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that people actively trying to shed pounds had the best results when the temperature dropped. The more inhospitable the weather, the more conscientious people became about keeping track of their meals and calories.

Climate-related factors can directly change a persons behavior, and these factors can have a certain impact on intentional efforts to lose weight, said Sang Youl Rhee, who led the research team at Kyung Hee University Medical Center in Seoul. In addition, various climatic factors can lead to a significant change in the level of energy expenditure in the body.

Researchers tracked the weight loss of 3,274 people under 42 throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia with Noom Coach, a fitness app that can pinpoint the location of users. They then used a meteorology service, called Weather Underground API, to monitor conditions, and discovered that colder temperatures and lower dew points as well as higher wind speed and precipitation were all linked to the app users weight loss.

On average, people logged into Noom 110 days during the year-long study, or roughly every three days. Men tended to use the app more frequently than women and were more likely to lose weight. People who logged their meals regularly, especially dinner, lost the most weight.

During the weight-loss journey, its important to focus on changing the underlying behaviors that lead to obesity, said Rhee, an endocrinologist. Those who continue logging food and have an awareness around what they are eating will be most successful in losing weight.

Other studies have explored the relationship between cooler temperatures and burning fat, including one in the journal of Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism that said spending time in the cold can boost calorie burn by up to 30 percent. Yet those studies primarily examined the molecular breakdown of fat, not the behavioral connection between temperature and weight loss.

Chronicling meals, physical activity and weight have been proven in previous studies to be effective ways to lose weight. A Kaiser Permanente study of 1,700 people found that those who kept a daily account of what they ate lost twice as much weight as those who kept no record.

Noom, which launched in 2012, lets users choose from a variety of courses, ranging from 16 to 22 weeks, designed to prevent or manage chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Courses are created by physicians and come with a coach to guide users through the process. One week might be dedicated to understanding triggers to unhealthy foods youre eating while another focuses on getting you to try a variety of veggies.

Its a cognitive behavior-based program, meaning youre trying to understand what makes you have certain habits and behaviors and change your thinking around those behaviors and habits, said Artem Petakov, president and co-founder of Noom. There are different exercises to make you more mindful and more likely to problem-solve around those areas.

Petakov said Noom has worked with other researchers, including a team at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, on wellness studies. In this case, the team at Kyung Hee approached the company, which has 45 million users worldwide, to get a diverse collection of anonymous data.

The study did not take exercise into account, but Petakov said thats not necessarily a shortcoming.

The popular notion is that physical activity is the key to achieving weight loss, but the truth is its more about nutrition, Petakov said. When its colder, you have more time to focus on the nutrition aspects, cooking more for example, and just have more time to dedicate to it without as many distractions as far as going outside.

Eat Whole Grains, Lose Weight – Men’s Journal

Whole grains such as barley, quinoa, and wild rice are better for you than refined grains like white bread, spaghetti, and saltines in a host of ways. They're loaded with fiber, key vitamins, and minerals, they have been proven to protect your heart, and defend against chronic diseases. According to a new study, they may also help with weight loss.

The study from Tufts University found that Swapping in whole grains for refined can help you keep a healthy weight and maybe even drop a few pounds.

Researchers recruited 81 adults to test out two separate diets, identical except for grain type, to see how each impacted resting metabolic rate (how efficiently the body burns calories when not moving) and calorie loss (the number of calories burned during digestion). Both of these factors can influence weight loss. After eating the exact same foods for two weeks, the participants followed either a whole-grains diet or a refined-grains plan for the next six weeks.

By the studys end, the metabolic rate of those fed whole grains had increased while that of the refined-grains group had not. The participants on the whole-grains diet also lost more calories through poop and those calories werent just from the additional fiber itself. The researchers subtracted the fiber calories out of the fecal analyses, so the difference reflected fibers beneficial impact on digestion and excretion of other calories in the diet.

The reason whole grains increase resting metabolism and calorie loss is likely tied to two factors, says lead study author Susan B. Roberts, senior scientist at the USDA Nutrition Center at Tufts and founder of the iDiet weight management program. The fiber in whole grains might increase metabolic rate by smoothing out the metabolic fuel availability in the body, she explains. Additionally, the higher-fiber foods may prevent some of the fat in the diet from being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Although her team didnt focus on participants weight loss or gain this study lasted just eight weeks after all Roberts says these physiological impacts can absolutely help you shed pounds over time. The bottom line of weight loss is calories in versus calories out, she says. That doesnt mean you can eat anything you want as long as you count calories. Rather, you want to choose high-fiber foods thatll fill you up and increase the number of calories that go out. This can tip the scale in a beneficial way.

Unlike the complex or highly specialized diets used in many studies, which you couldnt feasibly follow in real life, this whole-grains diet is very realistic. We used commercial cereals and breads to add whole grains and fiber and replace more-refined products like white bread, says Roberts. It would be totally easy to replicate this diet, and theres no reason why you wouldnt get these same benefits. This is a very practical way to help with weight management.

In fact, you could do even better than this meal plan. For instance, rather than trading in refined white bread for loaves made with whole-grain flour, you can cut back on bread altogether and embrace less-processed whole grains like steel-cut oats, corn, and millet. With the bran, endosperm, and germ still intact and not pulverized, these supply more roughage than their highly processed whole-grain counterparts. And as the researchers note in their paper, having more intact pieces to digest likely means an even greater impact on resting metabolic rate and calorie loss, potentially resulting in weight loss.

In my opinion, the best breakfast option is a smoothie because you are able to consume all of the aspects of the ideal nutrition profile that would help you stay healthy and to loose weight, combined with exercise.

For example, smoothies can contain an abundance of protein if you so choose.

In terms of creating a great-tasting smoothie,the base of your smoothie is key.

Including bananas for your base will make for a creamy taste. In addition, yogurts can also be added with healthy fats, such as coconut oil, almond butter and raw chocolate (known as cocoa).

Next, all you would have to do is throw your favorite fruits into the blender for a quick and healthy breakfast.

Greens can be including as well, as they are masked by the tastes of the fruits and healthy fats.

Last but not least, the breakfast that has taken over Instagram, the acai bowl, is also an excellent choice for a metabolism-boosting breakfast.

In close relation to the smoothie, the acai bowl contains a fruit that is similar to a cross between a blueberry and a grape.

This breakfast is a nutrient-dense powerhouse, as it contains a high level of antioxidants that are not just great for your body, but are also great for your skin.

You can put your favorite toppings over your acai bowl, in a similar fashion to frozen yogurt. Not only will this breakfast option boost your metabolism, but due to its nutrient-dense properties,the fruit is also known to have positive effects on ailments associated with oxidative stress, heart disease and cancer.

Eating Fruits Like Blueberries Will Help You Lose Weight: Study – Huffington Post Canada

In a perfect world, we should be able to eat mountains of junk food and never gain weight. And as one study indicates, eating more food can result in weight loss, it just means you need to eat the right type of food.

According to a recent study by Harvard Medical School, eating more fruits like strawberries, blueberries or apples can help people lose weight, the Telegraph notes.

Scientists found eating more fruit on the daily can prevent weight gain, even if you're eating the same amount of calories.

"Our results suggest that choosing high flavonoid fruits and vegetables, such as apples, pears, berries, and peppers, may help with weight control," Monica Bertoia, of the Department of Nutrition at Havard T H Chan School of Public Health, said in a statement.

Flavonoids are naturally occurring compounds that occur in fruits and veggies, the Telegraph notes, and have been previously linked to weight loss.

"We found that increased consumption of most flavonoid subclasses was associated with less weight gain among men and women aged 27-65 followed for up to 24 years," the study notes.

To test out their flavonoids theory, researchers followed almost 125,000 people between the ages of 27 and 65 for more than 25 years. They looked at participants' diets, lifestyle habits and of course, weight.

Research showed high levels of anthocyanins, flavonoid polymers and flavonols (which are found in blueberries, strawberries, apples and pears) had the greatest impact on weight loss.

Tea and onions were also helpful.

And according to Shape magazine, berries are potent sources of antioxidants which also help protect our body's cells.

They also fight belly fat, provide a good amount of fibre and boost metabolism.

And if you do have a big bulk of berries, you can always freeze them and use them in smoothies or oatmeal.

So yes, it may be a good idea to go out and get some berries today.

How Eman, the 500kg Egyptian woman, will lose weight after surgery in India – Hindustan Times

The worlds heaviest woman Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty , 36, who weighs close to 500kg, arrived in Mumbai on Saturday to undergo a lifesaving bariatric surgery next month for rapid weight loss.

She journey from her hometown Alexandria in northern Egypt wasnt easy. Eman, who is too obese to move and hasnt left her room in 25 years, took a special cargo plane, a truck and a crane to reach Mumbais Saifee Hospital, where the surgery will take place next month.

Bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, chairperson of Institute of minimal access surgical sciences and research centre, Saifee Hospital, speaks to HT on Emans surgery and her life before and after surgery.

What is Emans weight?

She weighed 498 kg when they weighed her using an industrial scale 15 days ago at home in Alexandria.

Emam is wider than she is high shes is almost 5 feet wide, measuring 151 cm wide (59.5 in, 4.95 ft) and 141 cm tall (55.5 in; 4.6 ft) and hasnt been able to even crawl for more than three years.

How did you decide to operate on Eman?

He sister Shaimaa Ahmed wrote to me six months ago and asked for help. She had reached out to doctors around the world on social media a year ago but did not get a great response of the risks involved because of Emans excess weight. She searched online and wrote to me, and I felt we had to help her.

Her body mass index (BMI) is 252 -- an indicator of healthy weight calculated by dividing your weight (in kg) by your height squared (in metres) -- when a healthy BMIis 23 or less.

When is surgery planned for?

Shes being prepared for surgery, which will be done in about a month from now. Shes on a special high-protein diet at home before she came here, as a result of which she lost about 25kg in two weeks. Now that shes in Mumbai, we will but her on a supervised high-protein low-carb ketogenic-like diet that will force her body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates while also helping the kidneys to push out excess fluids collected in her subcutaneous tissue and skin.

Eman should she will be close monitored, of course -- lose 1.5-2kg a day, so we hope to bring her weight actively down by 70-80 kg before the surgery.

How did she end up putting on so much weight?

She was an overweight child, which made it difficult for her to move and led to her packing in more kilos. Eman hasnt walked in more than two decades, she could crawl around a bit till about three years ago, but after what doctors suspected was a stoke, shes been immobile and stayed in bed.

Is a medical condition the cause of her excess weight?

We dont know, we have to study that. Doctors in Egypt incorrectly diagnosed her as having elephantiasis (a parasite infection that affects the lymphatic vessels and leads to water retention in the legs and other parts of the body), which she doesnt have.

She has obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, obstructive lung disease and gout.

A few years ago, she was diagnosed with stoke. Though the movement in her right side is less, she is not paralysed. movement issues may be because of her morbid obesity. We hope to restore full movement after shes lost weight after surgery.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

Moving her from Egypt to India needed some doing. To prepare her for the flight, she was physically prepared to optimise the conditions for her travel. Travel raises the risk of pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs), which could have killed her, so she was put on painkillers and a diet that helped her lose around 25kg.

She had trouble getting a visa because she could not go to the Indian Embassy in Cairo for biometrics (fingerprinting) and visa officials had a hard time believing she had not moved out of home in more than two decades.

My twitter appeal to Sushma Swaraj got an immediate response and she ensured Eman got a medical visa within two days.

To lose weight, and keep it off, be prepared to navigate interpersonal challenges – ProHealth

"Many times, when someone loses weight, that person's efforts are undermined by friends, family or coworkers," says Lynsey Romo, an assistant professor of communication at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the recent study. "This study found that people experience a 'lean stigma' after losing weight, such as receiving snide remarks about healthy eating habits or having people tell them that they're going to gain all of the weight back."

For this study, Romo conducted 40 in-depth interviews with people who reported themselves as having been formerly overweight or obese, but considered themselves thin at the time of the interview. Twenty-one of the study participants were women, 19 were men, and the participants reported an average weight loss of 76.9 pounds.

"All 40 of the study participants reported having people in their lives try to belittle or undermine their weight loss efforts," Romo says. "This negative behavior is caused by what I call lean stigma. However, the study found participants used specific communication strategies to cope with lean stigma and maintain both their weight loss and their personal relationships."

The communication strategies fell into two different categories. The first category focused on study participants helping other people "save face," or not feel uncomfortable about the study participant's weight loss and healthy eating habits. The second category focused on damage control: participants finding ways to mitigate discomfort people felt about an individual's weight loss and related lifestyle changes.

Techniques used to avoid discomfort included telling other people about one's intentions and rationale before losing weight. Study participants also reported taking steps to conceal the scope of their lifestyle changes, such as eating smaller portions of unhealthy foods at family gatherings, accepting food from people but not eating it (e.g., taking a piece of cake at an office birthday party, but saying they'll eat it later), or saving their "cheat day" for a night out with friends.

Meanwhile, techniques used to mitigate discomfort tended to focus on making excuses for changes in behavior.

"Study participants would go out of their way to make clear that they were not judging other people's choices," Romo says. "For example, participants would stress that they had changed their eating habits for health reasons, or in order to have more energy.

"Overall, the study highlights how important relationships are to making sustainable lifestyle changes -- and the importance of communication in how we navigate those relationships," she adds.

The paper, "An Examination of How People Who Have Lost Weight Communicatively Negotiate Interpersonal Challenges to Weight Management," is in press in the journalHealth Communication.
