Its hard to watch a loved one gain more and more weight when theyve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Losing weight may save eyesight, a limb or a life, but that may not make sticking to a diet possible.
Sadly there are too many stories of losing a loved one who needed to lose weight to save their life literally needed to lose weight to save their life. It seems hard to understand how a disease that puts ones life at risk and could be reversed or at least managed by weight loss, isnt motivation enough for successful weight loss. No matter how much they tried to get their family member to lose weight to save their life, they couldnt do it.
Threats dont work. Dire predictions dont work. Anger and disgust dont work. Bribes dont work, at least not long enough to make a difference. There is something that can make a difference. Its empathy.
Empathy isnt sympathy. Being empathic is feeling with the person. Sympathy is feeling for the person. Empathy can empower. Sympathy can further disable. Sympathy is accepting the condition is permanent. Empathy is knowing how hard it is to lose weight and understanding the challenges the other person faces. The understanding is how you can help them overcome them.
Empathy is experiencing another persons condition from their perspective. In other words, you open up your mind to imagine yourself as if you were them.You feel what they are feeling. Its not, if I were you. Its I am you.
Before you stop reading this because you think its a bunch of psychobabble, let me put the theory of empathy into a practical application.

Empathy isnt about pity parties. Its not joining somebody in their despair. Its understanding their condition and using that understanding to work with them, where they are, to move forward. Its helping somebody decide what they want, how they can get it, and getting assurance that they can and will.

A new studyby researchers at Tufts University that was published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compares how eating whole grains compared to refined grains effects can affect weight management formen and postmenopausal women. The study begins by explaining that though its generally recommended that people eat more whole grains than refined grains, the link between how eating whole grains helps adults to manage their weight hasnt been totally clarified. Given that the obesity epidemic is, well, an epidemic, Tufts researchers performed this study to find out if replacing refined grains could help with weight management.
The study involved two groups of 81 men and postmenopausal women. While both groups were fed similar diets intended to maintain each participants current weight, one group was fed more whole grains while the comparison group was fed refined grains with less fiber content. After six weeks on these diets, the researchers found that the whole grains group had an increase in their resting metabolic rate (i.e. how much energy your body burns at rest) as well as an increase in stool weight and energy content (i.e. how many calories end up in the toilet). Altogether, researchers found that these differences contributed to the whole grains group losing or burning 92 more calories each day than the group that had eaten refined grains.
While weve known for a while that eating whole grains is generally better for you than eating refined grains, this Tufts study provided all the food that the participants ate over the course of thesix-week study. This level of control over the studyand the fact that it was a parallel-arm trialallowed the researchers to more clearly see the difference that the two types of grains can have on your metabolism.
This is pretty great news if you love whole grainswho wouldnt want to lose about 100 calories a day from switching out their cereals and sandwich breads for whole grain versions?Susan Roberts,a senior author on the study who is the director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory atTufts University, says that they incorporated whole grains into the study groups diets primarily with whole grain bread, whole grain cereals, and brown rice. But one thing to keep in mind before you start filling your grocery cart with whole grain productsis labels can be misleading. While you may have good intentions in mind, make sure youre getting real whole grains in your diet by reading the ingredient list, not just the front of the package.
A good rule of thumb is to look at the ingredient list, not the Nutrition Facts. You are looking for products that dont have anything like enriched flour, sugar, etc., says Roberts. [You want] just whole grain flour, wheat flakes, brown rice, natural ingredients, not refined and white ones.

Freezing temps are no excuse to give up on fitness. As it turns out, you might stand a better chance of losing weight when its cold.
A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that people actively trying to shed pounds had the best results when the temperature dropped. The more inhospitable the weather, the more conscientious people became about keeping track of their meals and calories.
Climate-related factors can directly change a persons behavior, and these factors can have a certain impact on intentional efforts to lose weight, said Sang Youl Rhee, who led the research team at Kyung Hee University Medical Center in Seoul. In addition, various climatic factors can lead to a significant change in the level of energy expenditure in the body.
Researchers tracked the weight loss of 3,274 people under 42 throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia with Noom Coach, a fitness app that can pinpoint the location of users. They then used a meteorology service, called Weather Underground API, to monitor conditions, and discovered that colder temperatures and lower dew points as well as higher wind speed and precipitation were all linked to the app users weight loss.
On average, people logged into Noom 110 days during the year-long study, or roughly every three days. Men tended to use the app more frequently than women and were more likely to lose weight. People who logged their meals regularly, especially dinner, lost the most weight.
During the weight-loss journey, its important to focus on changing the underlying behaviors that lead to obesity, said Rhee, an endocrinologist. Those who continue logging food and have an awareness around what they are eating will be most successful in losing weight.

Other studies have explored the relationship between cooler temperatures and burning fat, including one in the journal of Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism that said spending time in the cold can boost calorie burn by up to 30 percent. Yet those studies primarily examined the molecular breakdown of fat, not the behavioral connection between temperature and weight loss.
Chronicling meals, physical activity and weight have been proven in previous studies to be effective ways to lose weight. A Kaiser Permanente study of 1,700 people found that those who kept a daily account of what they ate lost twice as much weight as those who kept no record.
Noom, which launched in 2012, lets users choose from a variety of courses, ranging from 16 to 22 weeks, designed to prevent or manage chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Courses are created by physicians and come with a coach to guide users through the process. One week might be dedicated to understanding triggers to unhealthy foods youre eating while another focuses on getting you to try a variety of veggies.
Its a cognitive behavior-based program, meaning youre trying to understand what makes you have certain habits and behaviors and change your thinking around those behaviors and habits, said Artem Petakov, president and co-founder of Noom. There are different exercises to make you more mindful and more likely to problem-solve around those areas.
Petakov said Noom has worked with other researchers, including a team at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, on wellness studies. In this case, the team at Kyung Hee approached the company, which has 45 million users worldwide, to get a diverse collection of anonymous data.
The study did not take exercise into account, but Petakov said thats not necessarily a shortcoming.
The popular notion is that physical activity is the key to achieving weight loss, but the truth is its more about nutrition, Petakov said. When its colder, you have more time to focus on the nutrition aspects, cooking more for example, and just have more time to dedicate to it without as many distractions as far as going outside.
