Why Exercise Is More Important Than Weight Loss for a Longer Life – The New York Times
In other studies from Dr. Gaessers lab, though, overweight and obese people with significant health problems, including high blood pressure, poor cholesterol profiles or insulin resistance, a marker for Type 2 diabetes, showed considerable improvements in those conditions after they started exercising, whether they dropped any weight or not. Seeing these results, Dr. Gaesser began to wonder if fitness might enable overweight people to enjoy sound metabolic health, whatever their body mass numbers, and potentially live just as long as thinner people or even longer, if the slender people happened to be out of shape.
So, for the new study, which was published this month in iScience, he and his colleague Siddhartha Angadi, a professor of education and kinesiology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, began scouring research databases for past studies related to dieting, exercise, fitness, metabolic health and longevity. They were especially interested in meta-analyses, which pool and analyze data from multiple past studies, allowing researchers to look at results from far more people than in most individual studies of weight loss or exercise, which tend to be small-scale.
They wound up with more than 200 relevant meta-analyses and individual studies. Then they set out to see what all of this research, involving tens of thousands of men and women, most of them obese, indicated about the relative benefits of losing weight or getting fit for improving metabolisms and longevity. In effect, they asked whether someone who is heavy gets more health bang from losing weight or getting up and moving.
The contest, they found, was not close. Compared head-to-head, the magnitude of benefit was far greater from improving fitness than from losing weight, Dr. Gaesser said.
As a whole, the studies they cite show that sedentary, obese men and women who begin to exercise and improve their fitness can lower their risk of premature death by as much as 30 percent or more, even if their weight does not budge. This improvement generally puts them at lower risk of early death than people who are considered to be of normal weight but out of shape, Dr. Gaesser said.

‘Funny fat girl’ Rebel Wilson’s team didn’t want her to lose weight – Page Six
Rebel Wilsons management team initially wasnt supportive of the actress 2020 fitness journey that ultimately saw her lose over 70 pounds.
I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said, OK, Im going to do this year of health. I feel like Im really gonna physically transform and change my life,' the Pitch Perfect star, 41, told the BBC on Monday.
And they were like, Why? Why would you wanna do that?' she recalled. Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person.
But Wilson knew she wanted to reshape her relationship with food, saying that while she was comfortable with her weight, she knew her eating habits were problematic.
I knew deep down inside that some of the emotional eating behaviors I was doing [were] not healthy. Like, I did not need a tub of ice cream every night, she admitted. That was me kind of numbing emotions using food, which wasnt the healthiest thing.
She added, I think it was dealing with not being a natural performer and having to perform every day and that pressure and internal stress to be able to perform like that.
Wilson has acknowledged that she understands why the public is obsessed with her weight loss, as she once paid close attention to Oprah Winfreys own journey.
Oprah is one of my heroes, she told the Daily Telegraphs Stellar in October. Shes certainly struggled with eating issues, and I would always watch her episodes when she spoke about that.
The Aussie star has also opened up about wanting to focus on her health and fitness in order to increase her chances of getting pregnant.
It first startedwhen I was looking into fertility stuff, and the doctor was like, Well, youd have a much better chance if you were healthier, she said on Instagram Live in July.
Wilson was initially offended that her doctor would suggest she lose weight because she believed herself to be pretty healthy, but after giving it some thought, she realized she should shape up in order to try to start a family.
Thats kind of what started it, that if I lost some excess weight that it would give me a better chance for freezing eggs and having the eggs be a better quality, she said. It wasnt even really myself; it was more thinking of a future mini-me, really.
Wilson first opened up about her fertility struggles in May, writing on Instagram, To all the women out there struggling with fertility, I feel ya. The universe works in mysterious ways and sometimes it all doesnt make sense but I hope theres light about to shine through all the dark clouds.
The Isnt It Romantic star started shedding weight in January 2020 when she announced that she was embarking on a year of health. Shehit her goal weightthat November byswitching up her exercise routineandeating healthier.
Since then, Wilson has proudly shown off her fit figure by posting thirst traps to social media.
Wilson has been living her best single life following her breakup with her boyfriend of six months, Anheuser-Busch heir Jacob Busch, in February.

Dr Michael Mosley: Better to lose weight ‘quickly rather than slowly’ with easy changes – Express
Dr Michael Mosley often shares his weight loss tips with slimmers online as well as on television. He is the creator of The Fast 800 a diet plan that helps people lose weight quickly.
The nutrition expert continued: There is a widespread belief that if you lose weight fast then you will put it on even faster.
But is it true?
In a recent review article titled Myths, Presumptions and Facts about Obesity in the prestigious medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers put this claim firmly into the myths category.
After looking at numerous studies which have compared rapid with slow and steady weight loss, they concluded that you would do better to lose it quickly rather than slowly.
DON'T MISS:
Looking at one study in particular, Dr Mosley said: Researchers took 200 obese volunteers and put half of them on a low calorie diet less than 800 calories a day for 12 weeks.
The other half were asked to cut their calories by 500 a day, which was enough to lose around a pound a week.
They were asked to do this for 36 weeks.
There was a very high drop-out rate among the steady dieters: less than half made it to the end of the 36 weeks. Most said they gave up because they were frustrated by the slow rate of progress.
The doctor went on to explain a little more about The Fast 800 diet, saying: The Fast 800 is a great place to start if youre looking to lose weight.
It provides you with all of the tools you will need to start changing your lifestyle for the better.
Once youve entered your goals, you will receive meal plans, recipes, shopping lists, exercises and mindful exercises to help you achieve your objective.
In terms of the types of food slimmers eat while following The Fast 800, Dr Mosley said: You should be looking to incorporate a good balance of protein, fibre and healthy fats, which is essentially the Mediterranean diet.
The good news is, whether you incorporate intermittent fasting or not, a low carb Mediterranean diet has unique power not just to restore your bodys ability to reach its ideal weight and stay there, but also to cut your risk of serious disease.
It doesnt come from a place of restriction but rather its about eating more of the right foods.
Not only will these foods keep you feeling full, but they also offer important nutrients and health benefits, and taste delicious.

Breakfast Habits to Avoid if You Want to Lose Weight, Say Experts Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the daybut in many cases, your morning meal may be the one that makes or breaks your weight loss efforts. However, it's not just downing donuts day after day that can have a profoundly negative impact on your weight. Experts say that many of the seemingly innocuous breakfast habits you're engaging in on a regular basis could be hindering your weight lossor even causing the numbers on the scale to move in the wrong direction. If you want to get your healthy living efforts back on track, read on to discover the worst breakfast habits for weight loss, according to experts. And if you want to slim down the healthy way, start with these 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work.
While you may find yourself short on time in the morning, having only coffee for your first meal can prove detrimental to your weight loss efforts in the long run.
"Replacing a nourishing breakfast with coffee may seem efficient, but you're actually missing out on some key nutrients like protein, fiber, and antioxidants from food," says Amy Davis, RD, LDN.
Without these essential nutrients, you may find yourself feeling sluggish or looking for foods that provide quick energy later on.

While grabbing a bowl of sugary cereal may be enough to temporarily quell your hunger, doing so may eventually backfire.
"These products lack nutrition and contain very little fiber, leaving you starving not long after! You should be opting for wholegrain cereals, such as rolled oats," says obesity specialist Nick Fuller, PhD, a research program leader at the University of Sydney's Boden Collaboration for Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise & Eating Disorders and founder of Interval Weight Loss.
RELATED: The #1 Best Breakfast Food to Eat After 50, Says Dietitian
It's true that fresh-pressed juices may be hydrating and contain nutrients, but Fuller says they're a poor choice of breakfast for most people.
"Calories from liquid are not as satiating," says Fuller. "When you juice or blend, you do not get the same filling effect when compared to eating the whole food. Plus, a large glass of juice will typically have 2.5 times the energy content and one-third the fiber content of a piece of fruit."
While black coffee may have negligible calories on its own, those sugary additions you're making to it can seriously derail your weight loss.
"Whether it be from a ton of real sugar via cane syrup sweeteners, or from multiple colorful packets of non-nutritive sweeteners, having your taste buds start the day off super sweet is not ideal. It sets your body up to crave sugar later on during the day," says Marissa Meshulam, MS, RD, CDN, founder of MPM Nutrition. Meshulam also notes that by starting your day with an ultra-sweet beverage, healthier sweets like fruit won't taste as satisfying.
If you want to ensure that you're not famished by noon, it's important to make sure you're eating plenty of fiber at breakfast.
"Diets rich in dietary fiber have been shown to be beneficial for reducing fat mass. Pairing a fiber source (fruit, vegetable, or whole grain) with breakfast helps to maintain blood sugar levels and manage hunger throughout the day," says Dana Norris, MS, RD, of Eleat Sports Nutrition.

Australias biggest healthcare startup has launched a new program to help Australian men lose weight, heres what you need to know – Business Insider…
After launching in February 2019, Pilot has since become one of Australias biggest startups for mens healthcare. With over 100,000 users, Pilots telehealth service is designed to make healthcare advice both easily accessible and understandable.
Recently, Pilot has launched its Metabolic Reset Program. This program is an Australian-first and designed to help Australian men lose weight through clinically proven medication and personal health coaching.
According to 2017-18 findings published by the Australian Institue of Health and Welfare, 67% of Australian over the age of 18 are overweight or obese. According to Pilot co-founder, Benny Kleist, One of Australias biggest killers is metabolic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases with one in three Australian men living with obesity.
Heres what you need to know about the program and how you can sign up for it.
Pilots Metabolic Reset Program is designed to help participants lose weight, but also keep the weight off.
I watched my brother struggle to lose weight for years no matter what he tried, explains Kleist. It affected him both physically and emotionally which is what inspired us to develop the Metabolic Reset Program.
What most people dont know is that 80% of weight gain is determined by our genetics. For those who are overweight or obese, most dont have a say in their ability to lose weight with diet and exercise alone.
So how does the program work? First, youll consult with a doctor to determine what your metabolism is. From there, youll be assigned a personal health coach who, along with your daily treatment plan, will help keep your weight loss on track through a consistent routine.
To help regular your appetite, youll also be prescribed a new class of medication that slows down the rate at which your stomach empties. It does this by mimicking a naturally occurring gut hormone know as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This results in you feeling fuller for longer and lowers your desire to intake more food.
By combining this medication with a set routine, along with support from health and fitness professionals, Pilots Metabolic Reset Program could help you overcome your weight loss struggles.
The Metabolic Reset Program costs $13 per day, which includes all doctors consults and support, the monthly delivery of treatment, as well as access to a personal health coach, which will be available at any time.
Before accessing the program, youll need to complete an online assessment to determine your eligibility.

Celery and Peanut Butter: Nutrition, Benefits, Downsides – Healthline
Celery with peanut butter is a simple and quick-to-make snack that can help fight hunger between meals.
Its low carb content makes it a popular option for people who wish to lose weight, follow a ketogenic diet, or want to limit the number of carbs they eat each day.
Interestingly, this snack also seems to top peoples list of the best snacks to have right before bedtime.
In this article, we review whether celery with peanut butter is a healthy snack, whether its suitable for specialty diets like the keto diet, whether it can help you lose weight, and how it may help you get a better nights sleep.
Celery and peanut butter are two minimally processed, nutrient-rich foods. As a result, combining the two results in a snack thats rich in fiber and protein. Its also a good source of niacin, manganese, copper, magnesium, and heart-healthy fats (1, 2).
You can expect a small, 5-inch (13-cm) long celery stalk topped with a tablespoon (16 grams) of 100% natural peanut butter to provide you with the following (1, 2):
Its low carb content makes this snack appropriate for low carb diets, and its moderate protein content and high fat content make it particularly suitable for a ketogenic diet (3, 4).
A keto diet is a low carb, high fat diet often used to treat epilepsy. It also appears effective for weight loss for some people and may help prevent or improve diabetes, Alzheimers disease, and possibly even some types of cancer (4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
Its worth mentioning that a keto diet isnt suitable for everyone. The diet may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, constipation, and fatigue. It may also result in nutrient deficiencies or issues with the liver or kidneys in the longer term (4).
Finally, both peanut butter and celery are rich in antioxidants, which are beneficial compounds that help protect you from disease-causing cell damage (9, 10).
Celery with peanut butter is rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. Its low carb content and high fat content makes it an appropriate snack for people following a keto diet.
Celery with peanut butter is rich in fiber, protein, and fat three nutrients that help fight hunger and increase feelings of fullness. As a result, having this snack as part of a balanced diet may help you lose weight (11, 12).
Despite peanut butter being rich in calories and fat, research suggests that including peanuts in your diet doesnt appear to cause weight gain (9).
Furthermore, peanut butter appears more likely to help you feel full than a carb-heavy snack containing the same number of calories. So in certain cases, it may even help with weight loss (9).
On the other hand, celery is low in calories, yet rich in water. Therefore, its low energy density may also help with weight loss and prevent weight regain (13, 14, 15, 16).
That said, its important to remember that weight loss typically results from burning more calories than you are taking in (17).
So if your calorie intake exceeds your calorie output, you are unlikely to lose weight, no matter the quantity of celery with peanut butter youre eating.
Celery with peanut butter may help fight hunger and promote fulllness. This may make weight loss more achievable, but only if the rest of your diet and lifestyle choices also allow for it.
Peanut butter contains a good amount of tryptophan, an amino acid shown to enhance the quality of your sleep (1, 18, 19).
Although studies havent specifically examined peanut butters effects on sleep, they have linked tryptophan-rich foods, like peanut butter, to improved sleep (20, 21).
Your body requires tryptophan to make melatonin and serotonin, two hormones that are crucial for high quality sleep (19, 22).
In addition, peanut butters fat and protein content, coupled with the fiber found in celery, make it a particularly satiating snack (9).
This can be particularly helpful if hunger pangs cause you to wake up in the middle of the night, or if your level of hunger at bedtime is keeping you from easily falling asleep.
Just keep in mind that celery is also quite rich in water. As a result, eating too much of it before bedtime may increase your need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, potentially disrupting your sleep.
Celery and peanut butter can be a good bedtime snack. Its particularly satiating and offers a good source of tryptophan, which may help increase the quality of your sleep.
Celery with peanut butter is a nutrient-rich, minimally processed snack that can find its place within a healthy, balanced diet.
Its low carb, high fat nature makes it a particularly suitable snack for those following a keto diet. Plus, it helps you feel full and satisfied, which can naturally help you limit the number of calories you eat if youre trying to lose weight.
Due to its tryptophan content, this snack may also help improve the quality of your sleep. However, its water content may cause some people to wake up and use the bathroom during the night. If this happens to you, try eating it during the day rather than before bedtime.

This Popular Weight-Loss Method Might Not Be Effective, Experts Say Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Japanese mint weight-loss patches have become a popular option for people who are eager to find a relatively easy way to shed a few pounds. However, while it's understandable why simply slapping a patch on your body would be an attractive option, they may not be effective, according to experts.
Parade recently took a look at the patches that claim to use Japanese mint as an active ingredient, noting that the plant that's also known as mentha canadensis comes from both North America and Asia. According to WebMD, it's actually the oil in the mint that's extracted and used for various conditions, including gas, indigestion, and gallstones, as well as for common colds, fever, and joint pain.
When it comes to using Japanese mint in weight-loss patches, Parade explains that they're "intended to absorb transdermally" which "allows the active ingredients (in this case, the Japanese mint) to go directly into the skin without going through your digestive system."
But the question is: Is it effective as a weight-loss method?
"Mint has some amazing benefits. One of these is its ability to stimulate digestive enzymes and boost metabolism and a faster metabolism can help with weight loss," Clara Lawson, RDN, who works with USA Hemp, tells Eat This, Not That!
However, when it comes to the patches, Lawson explained, "If you aren't bringing any healthy change into your diet and lifestyle, you aren't going to lose weight with these patches."
Lawson also notes that there is "no evidence in regards to their effectiveness and they aren't even regulated by the FDA, so they are not a legitimate weight-loss method."
That's certainly not the only potential problem with these patches. "Ultimately, my issue isn't with the mint; it's with the carrier they use (herbs are bound with a chemical that drives into the skin),"Haylie Pomroy, a top Hollywood nutritionist and founder of the Haylie Pomroy Group, who was one of the experts that spoke to Parade, warned in a statement provided to Eat This, Not That!
"It can be scary because some companies use the same carriers as fentanyl patches. Look at who is making it and where it's manufactured. Ninety-nine percent of these companies aren't disclosing their carrier."
Pomroy adds: "The only benefit we've seen through research with transdermal applications like these are for B vitamin transdermal or sex hormones, like testosterone or estrogen patches. Again, the issue is the carrier with all of these other patches."
