Aug. 24, 2012 Thirty minutes of exercise a day may be the magic number to lose weight.
A new study shows 30 minutes of exercise a day works just as well as an hour in helping overweight adults lose weight.
Researchers found moderately overweight men who exercised hard enough to sweat for 30 minutes a day lost an average of 8 pounds over three months compared to an average weight loss of 6 pounds among men who worked out for 60 minutes a day.
The overall loss in body mass was the same for both groups, almost 9 pounds.
Researchers say the results are surprising.
Part of the explanation may be that people found 30 minutes of exercise so doable that they had the desire and energy for additional physical activity, says researcher Mads Rosenkilde, a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen, in a news release.
In the study, researchers followed 60 moderately overweight men who wanted to lose weight. The men were randomly put into either a moderate or high aerobic exercise group.
The high-exercise group was instructed to exercise hard enough to produce a sweat, like from running or cycling, for 60 minutes a day. The moderate group only had to sweat for 30 minutes a day.
After 13 weeks, the study showed 30 minutes of exercise a day produced similar or even better results than 60 minutes a day.
The men who exercised 30 minutes a day lost an average of 2 pounds more of body weight than those who worked out for an hour.

It is also known that Beyonce gained the 20 pounds back as soon as she returned to her old eating habits. With any crash diet, weight loss is temporary and even causes the metabolism to slow down.
When the body experiences starvation, it protects itself by storing fat in order to survive. The body starts to break down muscle tissue instead of burning fat.
So what is it with lemons and weight loss?
Lemons are high in fiber, a fat-fighting nutrient that controls hunger pangs, reduces cravings and aids in digestion.

Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson has raised the bar for the celebrity momshell in the race to lose weight after giving birth.
Anderson, who has famously whipped Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow into shape, revealed to DuJour magazine that she has lost nearly all her baby weight just six weeks after giving birth to her daughter Penelope in May.
A lot of women use pregnancy as an excuse to let their bodies go, and thats the worst thing, Anderson told the magazine for its September issue.
Ive seen so many women who come to me right after [having children] with disaster bodies that have gone through hell, or they come to me years later and say, Oh, my body is like this because I had three kids.
The former dancer said she put on a healthy 30 pounds during pregnancy by avoiding overeating and working out during her pregnancy.
Andersons quick rebound only highlights the pressure many moms feel reading about Hollywood mothers or momshells (mother-as-bombshell) who seem to jump right back into their busy Hollywood careers looking svelte and stylish with no signs of baby weight.
More magazine editor-in-chief Lesley Jane Seymour told GMA last week that ordinary women need to remember that celebrities arent just like us.
Nobody can live to that standard, Seymour said. [Celebrities] have $40,000 exercising gurus. Youre not being paid for that. That is not your job. They have to get in shape in two weeks because theyve got to go on the set. That is not the normal human being.

'River City' star Tom Urie hopes to lose weight


River City star Tom Urie has revealed that he is working on losing weight.
The 43-year-old actor, who plays Big Bob O'Hara in the BBC Scotland soap, revealed that he has conquered alcohol and cigarette addictions in the past, and now plans to address his weight.
"Those things got out of control and now this [weight] issue has as well. So I'm treating this the same way. People have been on at me about my weight since I was a wee boy," he told the Daily Record.
Urie, who is getting help from a therapist, dietician and physiotherapist to lose weight, will also tackle the issue in an upcoming River City storyline when Bob has a heart attack.
He added: "In the west of Scotland it's a huge issue, yet it is only really ever written about from a comedy viewpoint. We wanted to do it with a sympathetic west of Scotland character, an everyday guy whose mother feeds him steak pies. And I felt I could do that because that guy's me.
"What I'm trying to do now, as an older and wiser guy, is figure out why I behave the way I do with food. A lot of it is psychological, comparable with alcoholic behaviour.
"I don't want to be thin. I just want to lose a few more stone and be comfortable. That's a realistic aim for me. It's coming off really slowly, but that's the best way according to the people I'm working with."

60 Minutes Of Working Out Doesn't Make You Lose More Weight Than 30 Minutes


If you want to lose weight, exercising for more than 30 minutes a day may be wasted effort, a new study from Denmark suggests.
In the study, participants who exercised for 30 minutes a day for three months lost just as much weight and body fat as those who exercised for an hour a day for the same time period.
This difference in weight loss was seen despite the fact that the 60-minute group burned twice as many calories, on average, as the 30-minute group.
The researchers were surprised by their results. It's possible those who were assigned to the 30-minute exercise group saw their training as more doable, and had the desire and energy for more physical activity afterward, the researchers said.
In addition, the people who spent 60 minutes exercising probably ate more, and therefore lost slightly less weight than anticipated, said study researcher Mads Rosenkilde, a doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen.
The study is published in the Aug. 1 issue of the American Journal of Physiology.
The study involved 60 overweight Danish men who had previously lived a sedentarylifestyle. About one-third were assigned to do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day at an intensity level high enough to produce a light sweat, one-third were told to do 60 minutes of aerobic exercise a day and the rest remained sedentary.
Participants in the exercise groups wore heart-rate monitors and calorie counters during training, and the program lasted 13 weeks.
On average, men who exercised 30 minutes a day lost nearly 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) in three months, while those who exercised for a whole hour lost about 6 pounds (2.7 kg). The reduction in fat mass was about 9 pounds (4 kg for both groups).
Interestingly, the participants who exercised 30 minutes per day burned more calories than they were expected to, based on the training program that was set for them, the researchers said. And the men who exercised the most lost less weight than expected, based on the amount of calories they burned.

Enlisting a Coach Helps You Stick to Your Weight Loss Regimen, Study Shows


Trying to lose weight? Then you probably know by now that its easy to get started on a weight loss plan, whether it involves diet or exercise or both, but its devilishly hard to stick to it. You start cheating more than your plans allows for. You make excuses to skip the gym. And the next thing you know, youve actually gained weight instead of losing it.
But a recent study published in the journal Obesity indicates that one effective way to make sure you keep on keeping on, as they say, is to get a coacheither a professional one or a friend who's also trying to lose weight will do. While this isnt the study to examine the benefits of engaging in a fitness program with a buddy, it certainly helps underscore the effectiveness of this approach.
The study, according to an article in Time.coms Healthland section, was conducted out of the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at Rhode Islands Miriam Hospital. It involved 44 participants assigned to health coaches who were either behavioral specialists or other study participants. At first, they met with their coaches on a weekly basis, but over the 24-week period, they started meeting less and less frequently in person, although they maintained weekly contact with their coaches through e-mails.
By the end of the study, which the researchers caution are preliminary, indicate that regardless of whether they had a specialist or a peer as a coach, the participants were able to cut their body weight by 9 percent after around six months of coaching.
But what makes coaching so effective? One factor is accountabilityafter all, if youre the only one who knows youre cheating, its much easier to do, but if you know someone is watching, youre more likely to exert the proper effort. If you know someone is going to look over your food journal, for example, you may be more inclined to take better records. Another factor is knowledge. Obviously, someone like a behavioral specialist will be able to help you pinpoint some of those bad habits you may not even realize youre guilty of. But a peerone who is also trying to lose weightwill probably be aware of at least some effective slim-down tactics as well.
So why not get started on your weight loss plan? And while youre at it, recruit a coach from among your friends if youd rather not fork over the dough for a professional.

It can be difficult at times to understand the right activities and the necessary amount of time needed to lose weight. To delve into this issue, scientists looked at the different amounts of time that could affect an individuals exercise regime. In particular, researchers from the University of Copenhagen found that 30 minutes of daily exercise can be an effective weight loss strategy, and 50 minutes of daily training can be helpful with body mass.
The study, featured in the American Journal of Physiology, was conducted by a team from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Over a period of 13 weeks, 60 Danish men participated in the program to get into better shape. Half of the men were instructed to exercise for an hour a day with a heart-rate monitor and a calorie counter. The second group only had to sweat for 30 minutes.
A moderate dose of exercise induced a markedly greater than expected negative energy balance, while a higher dose induced a small but quantifiable degree of compensation, wrote the authors in the report.
In the project, the individuals trained seven days a week for three months. All the training sessions made the participants sweat, but also increased in intensity over time. The researchers also looked at exercise as a form of transport, allowing them to exercise from point A to point B.
The results showed that, on average, men who exercised 30 minutes a day lost 3.6 kilos over a six-month period. 30 minutes of concentrated exercise training also helped participants burn more calories than they anticipated in a specific training program. In comparison, men who exercised for an hour only lost 2.7 kg. The researchers suggested that working out for an hour may not necessarily bring about additional fat or weight loss.
The scientists also believe that one of the reasons why 30 minutes of exercise is effective is that the fact that this amount of physical activity seems doable for the participants. As well, the study group that focused on 60 minutes of exercises possibly ate more and, as such, lost less weight than expected. In terms of particular activities, the men who completed biking, running, or rowing lost the most weight.
Many of the participants in the study hoped to have a lifestyle change with the increase of exercise training. Health science researchers observed their energy balance, hormones, and insulin resistance. Ethnologists also helped in adjusting bad habits and identifying cultural barriers.
Researchers believe that the broad interdisciplinary approach for the FINE project allowed them to pool strong data. As a result, they felt that few participants stopped the program prematurely. The focus on the participants motivation for the program also helped with the process.
