Competition drives weight loss in Game On Diet

Competition drives weight loss in Game On Diet

A popular fitness plan uses friendly competition to encourage groups of friends to lose weight.

The Game On Diet was developed by the head writer of the TV show "Grey's Anatomy," along with a fitness expert. A group of employees at Charlestown Middle School said the competition has given them the motivation to get in shape.

The group competes for prizes including pedicures and dinner cruises on Lake Sunapee. Those with the most points win, and those who lose the competitions pay for the prizes.

"And we happen to have a really competitive group and we don't like to lose, so the very first prize we competed for with the three of us was a pedicure," said Principal Paula Southard-Stevens.

The Game On competition in Charlestown started with three school staffers in December.

"People are feeling better about themselves," Southard-Stevens said. "They're fitting into clothes they haven't worn in years."

The success led to nearly a dozen staff members joining the game, making up three teams. In less than five months, they have lost more than 200 pounds collectively.

"You can have 100 calories of whatever you choose, except for alcohol or diet sodas, so if you really want 100 calories worth of ice cream a day, you can," said school nurse Karla Chaffee. "As far red wine goes, I guess you have to wait until your day off."

"Grey's Anatomy" writer Krista Vernoff developed the Game On diet with fitness expert Az Ferguson.

Hollywood Park: Valenzuela puts comeback on hold until he can lose weight

Email

Benoit & Associates

Patrick Valenzuela says he currently weighs 126 pounds and must start eating better to reduce enough to be able to ride horses without carrying excess weight.

INGLEWOOD, Calif.- An ongoing battle with weight will keep Patrick Valenzuela from riding in the near future, the jockey said on Sunday.

Valenzuela took off his lone mount on Sunday and said later in the day that he is struggling to control his weight.

I cant get my weight off, Valenzuela said in a phone interview. Im 126 [pounds]. It is tough and its tougher than I thought.

I ran this morning and I got to 126. I was 129. Until Im get my weight down Im not going to name on horses. Its not fair to horsemen.

Valenzuela is not named to ride on eight-race programs at Hollywood Park on Thursday or Friday.

Valenzuela ended a five-month retirement last month at the start of the current spring-summer meeting. Last December, Valenzuela announced his retirement, citing a gall bladder surgery in November and lingering soreness in his knees.

Valenzuela, who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby on Sunday Silence, has won 4,334 races in a career that has been plagued by interruptions for substance abuse problems in the past.

Pressure to lose weight affects students, faculty

A college student stands in front of the mirror and runs her hands up and down her body. She struggles with her looks and is constantly concerned about what others are thinking of her. She is so worried about her body that she practices drastic weight loss measures to feel satisfied with her looks. For many college students this is the life they lead. Many spend their whole lives thinking about their weight.

For those obsessing about their weight, a sudden change in eating habits can lead to short-term weight loss. However, such radical changes are neither healthy nor a good idea, and won't be successful in the long run, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For some, losing weight is not just a physical occurrence, said Crystal Stidham, a senior biology major at ETSU.

"It's a very emotional experience where you always beat yourself up and you are never quite where you want to be," said Stidham, 28. "I definitely have [had] some unhealthy practices such as skipping meals, diet pills, and taking in a lot of caffeine which diminishes your appetite."

Stidman believes that she is constantly seeking some kind of approval, she said.

In this society the smaller you are the more attractive you are, said Stidman.

An individual can measure their weight by calculating their body mass index based on their height and weight, according to http:www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/. If a person's BMI is less than 18.5 percent then that person is classified as underweight, according to the CDC.

Stidham said she is not concerned with her body mass index but is mostly worried about her physical appearance.

"It's a very personal experience even though so many people go through it," said Stidham. "It takes a really heavy influence to make someone stop."

Stidham does not seek self esteem from the inside. It is the external influences that she lets determine whether she looks good or not, she said.

Want to lower breast cancer risk? Lose a little weight

For postmenopausal women who are obese, breast cancer is more likely. That's because fat tissue seems to behave essentially as an organ of the endocrine system, pumping out the hormone estrogen. And estrogen is a driver of many common breast cancers. But losing as little as 5% of one's body weight 10 pounds for a 200-pound woman drives down levels of estrogen and other hormones that raise breast cancer risk, a new study finds.

In combination with weight loss, exercise drove down hormone levels even more, an effect that is likely to reduce a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. But by itself, exercise did not have a significant impact on circulating hormones.

The more weight a woman lost, the greater the reduction in hormones linked to breast cancer risk.

While many studies have linked obesity to breast cancer, this is the first to show that losing weight will drive down that risk. Obesity is just one of many risk factors for breast cancer that a woman can do something about. Others include breastfeeding one's babies, reducing alcohol consumption and steering clear of hormone-replacement therapy. Women at high risk of breast cancer are sometimes urged to consider taking one of several medications, including two first approved to prevent osteoporosis, to reduce their risk.

"This shows it's never too late to make lifestyle changes to reduce your risk for breast cancer," said co-author Dr. Anne McTiernan from Fred Hutchison Cancer Center.

While more significant weight loss drove down estrogen and other helper hormones more deeply, even a weight loss far short of what would be needed to exit the obese category helps a lot. The study's authors estimate that a 5% loss of body weight would lower a woman's breast cancer risk by 22%.

The study took 439 postmenopausal Seattle-area women who were sedentary and overweight or obese, and divided them into four groups. One group got an intensive weight-loss program focused on reducing calories and fat and choosing fruits, vegetables and high fiber; another group got an intensive exercise program only five 45-minute aerobic exercise classes a week. A third group got a program that had exercise (mostly walking) and diet help. Members of the fourth group were asked not to change their diet or exercise habits but were offered four weight-loss classes and eight weeks of physical exercise training at the end of the study.

After a year, the average weight loss among the dieters was 10.8% of body weight, and among those who added exercise to their regimen, 11.9% (while the control group's average weight inched up almost imperceptibly, the exercise-only group added 3.3% of body weight.)

The big changes were in levels of circulating hormones such as estradiol, estrone, testosterone and sex-hormone binding globulin, which takes estrogens out of circulation and is therefore protective against breast cancer. With diet, average levels of those hormones fell by 10% to 20%, and adding exercise generally subtracted as many as five percentage points from subjects' hormone levels. The hike in SHBG the breast-cancer protective agent was 22.4% in dieters and 25.8% in those who did both diet and exercise.

The diet-and-exercise group also saw a decline in fasting insulin levels and measures of inflammation. The exercise-only group saw much smaller changes in all these measures on the order of 5%.

Skechers scandal proves there's no shortcut to weight loss

Vania Isaac, owner of H.E.A.R. Fitness Studio in Monroe, knows that few of her clients come to her because they love exercising. They're there to lose weight. And if they could find a way to do that without exercising, they'd hop on it in a hot minute.

To that end, she's spotted some of her clients wearing Skechers Shape-ups, a convex-soled shoe that -- according to ads -- was supposed to help wearers shed pounds and tone their buttocks and others muscles through the simple act of walking in them. But, Isaac said, the shoes didn't help her clients lose weight. In fact, some of them complained of back pain, cramps in their calves and other ailments.

"These were people who never had back pain before," Isaac said. "I told them `Take off those shoes, stretch and come back when you feel better.' "

So Isaac wasn't surprised when she heard that Skechers USA, Inc., which makes the shoes, recently agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges that the company made unfounded claims about the weight-loss benefits of Shape-ups and other products. As a result, dissatisfied Skechers customers may be eligible for a partial refund.

The settlement is the result of an investigation that involved attorneys general from more than 40 states, including Connecticut, and the District of Columbia. Connecticut's share of the settlement is $88,208. In addition to the financial consequences, the ruling also bars Skechers from making any claims about the health or fitness benefits of its shoes without scientific evidence.

Skechers debuted the Shape-up in 2009, and the footwear cost about $100 a pair. The FTC ruling also mentions the Skechers products Toners, Tone-ups and Resistance Runners. These shoes became available in 2010 and cost between $60 and $100.

Locally, medical and fitness experts weren't shocked by the resolution, nor were they surprised by the fact that so many people bought into the idea that a shoe could make them thinner. "Most of the people in our society don't like to exercise," Isaac said. "Even the people who come to my studio don't like to exercise. But if you want to lose weight, you can not get around having to eat healthier and exercise more."

Dr. Stuart Zarich, chief of cardiology and vascular medicine at Bridgeport Hospital agreed, but added that Skechers isn't the first company to promise customers a quick and easy way to get healthy. "There's been a myriad of health claims for a variety of medicines and lifestyle aides," he said. For instance, Zarich said he once saw an ad for a pill that could cure diabetes. Since diabetes is an illness he specializes in, he was well aware that no pill has been invented with such miraculous benefits.

Likewise, as a cardiologist, he's fairly certain that a shoe can't bring about weight loss. "I have no data that's proven that any type of running gear helps you lose weight better or faster than anything else," Zarich said. "It's the exercise that makes you lose weight, not the shoe design."

Linda Gottlieb, a fitness trainer based in Milford, echoed Isaac's and Zarich's sentiments about the appeal of these toning shoes. "People are always looking for a quick way to get fit, and they'll pay money for it," she said.
