5 diets that can help with weight loss – Loop News St. Lucia

We all wish that we had a magic solution for weight loss where we can eat whatever we desire while keeping our ideal weight.

Unfortunately, there is no magic solution for losing weight and in order to keep the weight off we need to change our diets.

On the bright side, there are several types of diets out there that can help you lose weight in combination with other healthy lifestyle choices.

I have put together five types of diets that can aid in weight loss along with the pros and cons and other key facts to know when youre deciding which one works best for you.

The alkaline diet

The alkaline diet is based on the idea of replacing acid-forming foods with alkaline foods to improve health. It is said that this diet helps combat serious diseases such as cancer.

The idea is that a person can control the acidity or alkalinity of their body through the foods they consume. When food is metabolised to extract calories, the food is burnt, leaving an ash residue that may be acidic, alkaline or neutral. Advocates of the alkaline diet claim that this ash can affect how acidic the body is and that acidic ash increases susceptibility to disease. Alkaline ash, on the other hand, they believe is protective and that by alkalizing the diet and balancing the bodys pH, it is possible to improve health.

A few alkaline foods that one can consume with this diet include lettuce, spinach, sweet potato, carrots, pineapple, watermelon, grapefruit, onion, ginger, cashews and almonds to name a few.

Pros

Cons

Keto diet

A keto or ketogenic diet is a low-carb, moderate protein, higher-fat way of eating. The reduction in carb intake puts your body in a metabolic state called ketosis, where fat, from your diet and from your body, is burned for energy. This diet is especially useful for losing excess body fat without hunger and for improving type 2 diabetes.

Some keto friendly foods include sardines, mackerel, shellfish, cauliflower, zucchini, cheese, avocados, chicken, eggs, coconut oil and the list goes on.

Pros

Cons

Intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting is eating that cycles between fasting and eating. It is not specific to what you should eat, but rather when you should eat. Common intermittent fasting methods involve daily 16-hour fasts or fasting for 24 hours, twice per week.

Pros

Cons

Raw food diet

A raw food diet, also sometimes called raw foodism, is about eating mostly or all unprocessed and uncooked foods so you get all the nutrients without the dangerous additives. The goal of eating more raw foods is to obtain plenty of nutrients in an easy-to-digest manner, one thatour bodies are naturally suited for.

Some of the foods in that diet include fresh, juiced or dehydrated raw fruits, raw nuts, raw nut butters, seaweed

Pros

Cons

Low fat diet

Low fat diets involve restricting fat intake to less than 30% of total daily calories. Instead, youre meant to eat naturally low fat foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, egg whites, legumes, and skinless poultry. Fat-reduced foods like low fat yogurt, skim milk, and lean cuts of beef and pork are also sometimes permitted.

From weight loss to protein intake: A nutritionist busts some common myths – The Indian Express

By: Lifestyle Desk | New Delhi | September 14, 2020 6:20:23 pm Some of the diet myths you should know about. (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock)

The internet is filled with information, tips, and tricks along with numerous DIYs on ways to build ones health and boost immunity. But it is always advised to tread with caution and understand the authenticity of such information before making it a part of ones routine. Here are some common misconceptions that people need to do away with, suggested nutritionist Nmami Agarwal.

Take a look.

*Reduced protein intake and weight loss

Cutting down protein from ones diet can impact the health negatively by weakening the bones and muscles. This will not help lose weight. It is, therefore, necessary to speak to an expert before making any drastic changes to your diet as protein is one of the essential nutrients that help in the smooth functioning of the body.

*Cashews and increased cholesterol levels

Cashews, which are rich in carbohydrates and fats, are believed to spike up the cholesterol levels. According to Agarwal, while they contain saturated fat, the maximum of it comes from stearic acid which is a type of fatty acid that has a neutral effect on blood cholesterol. This means they can be consumed in limited quantities. Moreover, the nut provides plenty of vitamins and minerals that are quite beneficial for the human heart and can help in managing weight.

*Age and exercise

Many old people tend to stay away from exercise thinking their biones may not be able to take the strain. However, Agarwal mentioned that exercising under guidance can make one feel optimistic and energetic and it improves overall health. Just maintain your pace and try not to force your body to do more. You can do yoga, low-intensity aerobics, breathing exercises at an older age to keep yourself away from pains and aches, Agarwal said.

*Plant-based diet may not provide enough protein

Certain plant-based food sources are rich sources of protein that help balance the bodys diet deficiencies. Food sources like tofu, lentils, peanuts, chickpeas, almonds, quinoa, chia seeds, hemp seeds, beans and rice, potatoes and green leafy vegetables are all rich in protein. All you have to do is focus on consuming a balanced and nutritious diet to get the maximum amount of nutrients, shared Agarwal.

*Green tea helps in burning fat

The truth is green tea does not make one lose weight. It only boosts ones metabolism and can benefit ones health in multiple ways.

Instead of relying on widely shared myths, it is always a good idea to check with an expert and make changes to ones diet accordingly, she recommended.

Making sure you have a healthy pregnancy if you are overweight – The Union Leader

Singer Jessica Simpson acknowledges that she gained 50 pounds when she was pregnant with her daughter Maxwell in 2012. Years later, while going through old photos of her pregnant self, she recalls asking her husband, Babe, why didnt you tell me to put the brownie down?

So what should you do if youre pregnant and overweight or obese? We know being overweight increases your risk for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, sleep apnea, miscarriage and birth defects, but a 2015 metastudy published in PLOS One concluded that if overweight or obese women lose weight while pregnant, it increases the risk of complications and may harm the fetus. Instead, the focus should be on getting top-notch nutrition by eating a plant-based diet that eliminates highly processed foods, red meats and added sugars, and on enjoying daily physical activity. Remember: Consult your doc about nutrition and doing physical activity before making changes to your lifestyle.

Your goal is to gain about 2 to 4 pounds during your first three months of pregnancy and 1 pound a week for the remainder of the pregnancy perhaps less if youre overweight.

The best plan, however, is to lose weight before you become pregnant. Work with your doctor to determine how much weight you need to lose for maximum health and then how long losing 1 pound a week you need to achieve that goal. Once you hit that mark and maintain it for a couple of months, then youre ready to move on to the next great event in your lives!

The 10 Best Meal Replacement Bars in 2020 – Healthline

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Heres our process.

Regularly fueling your body with nutritious meals and snacks is essential for your overall health.

However, you may occasionally find yourself short on time and in need of a quick meal replacement to take on the go. Meal replacement bars are also a good choice for people who are traveling and dont have access to healthy meals.

Additionally, if youre hitting the trails on a backpacking or hiking trip, you may be searching for portable meal bars to keep you energized while exploring the great outdoors.

Keep in mind that although meal replacement bars are a great choice in a pinch or when trying to travel light, they should not be regularly relied upon if you have the ability to prepare complete meals.

Also, many bars that are advertised as meal replacements dont contain nearly enough calories to constitute a meal. This is especially true for backpackers and hikers who burn a large number of calories per day.

The bars on this list are made with whole food ingredients and contain at least 250 calories per bar.

Even though some people may be satisfied with this number of calories for a light meal or snack, most people need many more calories per meal to maintain their weight, depending on their body size and activity level (1).

If youre using bars to replace breakfast, lunch, or dinner, its a good idea to pair them with other foods to ensure youre consuming enough calories.

Bars can be combined with other portable foods like hard-boiled eggs, trail mix, Greek yogurt, or fruit paired with nut butter or cheese to create a more complete meal.

GreenBelly Meal 2 Go Bars were created by a backpacker who struggled to get proper nutrition while on long backpacking expeditions.

Theyre very high in calories and carbs, making them an excellent choice for hikers and backpackers who need to refuel with calorie-dense, portable meals while on the trail.

Here is the nutrition info for a two-bar serving of their Mango Cashew Coconut Bar:

Shop for Greenbelly Meal 2 Go Bars online.

When shopping for meal replacement bars, its important to consider why youre using them as a meal replacement. If you simply need a quick option when youre short on time, bars may be a good choice.

Likewise, people who are traveling, backpacking, or hiking may find that meal replacement bars are a convenient way to nourish themselves when preparing a meal isnt an option.

However, if youre using meal replacement bars to lose weight, you may want to reconsider. Whenever possible, you should take the time to prepare whole, nourishing meals for yourself, especially when trying to lose excess body fat.

Although bars can be a convenient option to occasionally rely on for energy, they may not be best as a weight loss tool. As mentioned above, most meal bars are too low in calories for most people.

Consuming a bar with only a couple hundred calories as your breakfast, lunch, or dinner could result in you overeating at subsequent meals, which can derail your weight loss efforts.

Whether youre trying to lose, maintain, or gain weight, fueling your body with nourishing meals that contain the appropriate number of calories for your body size and activity level is key.

Regardless, when shopping for meal replacement bars, choose products that contain whole food ingredients like nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Select bars that deliver at least 250 calories and contain no added sugar whenever possible.

Keep in mind that products made for hikers and backpackers who require a large number of calories per day usually contain added sugars and are high in fat to meet their energy demands. Under these circumstances, some added sugar is OK (3, 4).

Pairing bars under 300 calories with other nutrient-dense foods can help round out the meal and ensure youre getting enough calories, as well as macronutrients and micronutrients.

Remember that calorie needs differ significantly depending on factors like age, sex, weight, and activity level. Talk to a registered dietitian if youre unsure how many calories you should be consuming per day.

Although preparing complete meals is always the best option, meal replacement bars can be a great choice when you need a quick, nourishing fuel source.

When choosing a bar, make sure to pick products that are made with healthy ingredients like the bars listed above.

The 5 Potentially Harmful Food Additives to Look for on the Label – The Beet

When was the last time you read a label? If youre like us, you see the word Organic,Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, All-Natural, Vegan and Organic on a label and think: thats for me, because I am trying to eat healthy. Not so fast. These words don't tell the whole story.

In fact, many of these processed foods (like spreadable dairy-free cream cheese and other foods you look for to be healthier alternatives to the full-fat dairy) contain hidden additives thatmay bepotentially unhealthy if eaten frequently or in large amounts. The truth is that even the most well-meaning food makers have to add preservatives and additives to their foods to keep products shelf-stable and delicious for weeks, months, or even longer.

Before you toss that tofu cream cheese or coconut-milk yogurt into your basket, thinking these are full of wholesome goodness, first check the label for five potentially harmful ingredients you need to know more about, and have an honest understanding of, since they could potentially do as much harm to your diet as your healthy intentions are doing good.

Justhow healthy or dangerous are those packaged items you have come to rely on? We break down what the heck these ingredients are, why theyre there in the first place, and the potential risks or harmful side effects.

What its designed to do: A thickener, preservative, and alternativesweetener

What the studies say: Maltodextrinhas a higher glycemic index than table sugar, which means eating it can cause a spike in blood sugar after eating foods that contain it, whichcan be dangerous for anyone with diabetes or insulin resistance. It's often used as a sweetener but can be worse for you than plain old table sugar so if you're avoiding that, avoid this.

This 2016 study conducted by doctors in the Netherlands found that substituting unprocessed starches with Maltodextrin may increase the product's glycemic load, meaning elevates the sugar content and drives up how much blood glucose your body needs to metabolize in one sitting. This can lead to insulin response, fat storage, or weight gain. A study conducted by doctors at the University of South Carolina found evidence that foods that increase the glycemic load also increase inflammation, which is a major contributor to chronic diseases.

Who should stay away: People who are watching their weight, or are diabetic, or have Celiacs Disease or are gluten sensitive, because Maltodextrin is derived from wheat and can contain gluten.

Where you find it: Often in packaged or processed foods like pasta, salad dressing, cereal, canned soup, low-fat products, powder formulas, protein powders, and supplements.

Bottom Line: If you are not sensitive to gluten you can probably tolerate Maltodextrin in small amounts but it can add up if you are not watching labels but longterm, the tollthat inflammation takes on the body might make this one ingredient that most people will want to tryto skip, not just anyone gluten insensitivities.

What its designed to do:Xanthan Gum isused as a thickener or as a stabilizer or emulsifier and many of your favorite gluten-free products probably contain it.

What the studies say: The word "gum" is not far off, since it can really mess up your intestines if you're not careful about amounts. When consumed in high doses, a study by Northern General Hospital discovered that Xanthan Gum can cause colonic distress, and is "a highly efficient laxative agent" that can cause flatulence and increase the "frequency of defecation." One study out of Brazil also found that it might cause inflammation in humans based on research conductedin the lab. Animals fed a diet that included Xanthan Gum had an increase in inflammatory tissue.

Who should stay away: Anyone with a sensitive stomach or concerned about their level of inflammation or who are already prone to IBS or diarrhea.

Where you find it:Bakery products, cake mixes, pie crusts, cereal bars, salad dressings, pasta sauces, spreads, vegetable patties, frozen pizza, honey-roasted peanuts and more.

Bottom Line: Added to many gluten-free products, Xantham Gum might upset your stomach as much as gluten itself.

What its designed to do: A soluble fiber used as a thickener and binder

What the studies say:This stuff expands, which is great if you want to feel full but super dangerous if eaten in large quantities. In the 1990s, diet pills that used Guar Gum were banned by the FDA because they could swell up to 10 to 20 times the original size when ingested, causing dangerous blockages in the body. After a series of incidents where people suffered from esophageal and intestinal obstruction after taking the diet pills that contained Guar Gum, an analysis of FDA reports found that Guar Gum poses a deadly risk of swelling and obstructing the esophagus and small intestine. The FDA has now banned the use of Guar Gum in diet pills and strictly regulating the amount that can appear in food products.

However since Guar Gum is a soluble fiber, studies on high-fiber diets given to those with diabetes have shown that soluble fiber as part of a high-fiber diet can help reduce blood sugar levels and LDL (so-called bad cholesterol) by up to 20 percent over three months.

Who should stay away: Everyone should stay away from diet pills that contain the additive and stay wary of the amount used in food products, but if you need to add soluble fiber to your diet to lose weight, for medical purposes, it can be safe in small amounts.

Where you find it: Ice cream, yogurt, salad dressing, gluten-free baked goods, sauces, kefir, breakfast cereals, vegetable juices, pudding, and soup.

Bottom Line: Thanks to the FDAs strict regulations, the amount of Guar Gum in food products pose no risk of obstruction, however, its important youre aware of the amount youre consuming since some foods like vegetable juices are allowed to contain 2 grams.

What its designed to do: Preserve and inexpensively add fat to foods

What the studies say:Palm Oil is bad for your heart, and can drive up cholesterol, but because it's cheap and stays solid at room temperature but melts when heated (like margarine), it's in 50 percent of all products at the store. A study conducted out of the University of Columbia found that contrary to the popular notion that Palm Oil can reduce cholesterol, it has minimal health benefits and can actually raise cholesterol even in small amounts, because of its high concentration of saturated fat.

Since Palm Oil is used so frequently in cooking, another study from Malaysia looked at what happens when you reheat foods that have been cooked with palm oil and found that the more often the oil gets heated the worse it is for you, becoming denser it became, and the likelier to lead to plaque deposits that can clog arteries and lead to heart disease. found that when the oil is reheated, it can actually increase plaque deposits in arteries.

Who should stay away: Anyone watching their saturated fat intake or concerned about the environmental impact of harvesting Palm Oil since it has led to deforestation acrossthe planet, and the equivalent of 300 football fields of rainforest are being destroyed every hour.

Where you find it: Look at any supermarket aisle of packaged goods: About 50 percent of the products contain Palm Oil. Why? It's inexpensive and easy to add to any processed food. In fact, it's the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet, but it's terrible for your heart. From pizza dough to margarine (because it's solid at room temperature) pretty much everything you buy at the store has palm oil added to it.

Bottom Line:In shampoo and hair ingredients, Palm Oil can be great, but if you're watching your cholesterol (and you should be) this is one to skip.

What its designed to do: A preservative, curing agent, and flavoring agent

What the Studies Say:Lactic acid sounds so innocent since it's made by our very own bodies when we work out hard. However, in a study by doctors at The University of Augusta, Georgia in 2018, two-thirds of patients who took lactic acid experienced brain fog, confusion, and short term memory loss as well as bloating and fullness.

Who should stay away: Anyone tryingto focus, keep their brain sharp or with a sensitive stomach. But for the most part lactic acid has not been determined to be harmful to you.

Where you find it:Pickled vegetables, sourdough bread, beer, wine, sauerkraut, kimchi, and fermented soy foods like soy sauce and miso.It is not from animal products (despite the word lactic which sounds like it comes from milkit actually occurs in the fermentation process). It also occurs naturally in your body when you need to convert glucose to fuel.

Bottom Line: If youre someone who takes a product with Lactic Acid on the label you may want to monitor your symptoms and decide if you are having those issues as well.

Although small amounts of these additives wont pose any high-risk health dangers in the immediate term, its essential to know preciselywhat's in theproducts you buy. These additives will likely be acceptable in moderation, but the best bet to avoid food additives is to stick to eating whole foods, like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, so you dont even have to worry about double-checking a label.

"And Kevin Pieterson calls me Seven chins, which isn't very nice. Im trying to get them down to six."

Explaining how the comment has made him splash out on a personal trainer in order to shed the excess pounds, Piers added to The Sun: "Im going to see a new personal trainer.

"Unfortunately Celia [Piers' wife] has taken it all quite seriously, so suddenly its all the good stuffs gone and all the kales come in and the quinoa and vegetables.

"A lot of vegetables. A lot of salmon."

Cutting down on booze, the former newspaper editor added: "A lot less Bordeaux - Im down to one glass a night. And, well, during the summer, a lot of cheese went down my gullet, and it could stretch to a bottle of red.

"Quite comfortably.. Depending on the quality, and maybe a little more."

But while he may be losing the battle with his weight Piers is coming up trumps in the all important battle for ratings.

Taking to social media earlier this month, Piers couldn't hide his glee after GMB closed the gap on rival BBC Breakfast upon his and Susanna's return.

Posting to his 7 million followers, Piers wrote: "BREAKING: Our first day back on GMB yesterday was the highest rated show in the programmes history!

"28 per cent audience share. 47 per cent up year-on-year."

Susanna Reid's co-star swiped: "Sadly, BBC Breakfast collapsed to its lowest rating of the year... thoughts with them at this difficult time.

"Thanks for watching!"

Chris Pratt Was Encouraged To Gain 40 Pounds on ‘Parks and Recreation’ — ‘Everyone Wanted to See How Much I Could Eat’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Most Marvel fans picture Chris Pratt as the impossibly fit superhero Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films. His sculpted physique helped him fit the part plus turned the 41-year-old actor into an international sex symbol. Pratt is heartthrob material through and through.

However, some of Pratts fans from a decade ago remember him quite differently. His turn as Andy Dwyer on the hit NBC comedy Parks and Recreation is a far cry from the muscular Quill of later years.

The actor recalls how a tiny amount of weight gain on the series led to his boss encouraging him to overeat, all for the laugh factor.

Pratt was working as a server at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in Maui when he got discovered at the age of 19. After scoring the lead role in the short horror film Cursed Part 2, the actor made appearances on shows including Everwood and The O.C. But his luck really changed in 2009.

Originally, the part of Andy Dwyer on Parks and Rec was only meant to be a temporary bit part. But after seeing Pratt bring his charm and charisma to Andy, the producers decided to make him a series regular. He was ultimately one of the central characters one the series.

According to ET Online, the actor gained weight while working on Parks and Rec, but not on purpose.

Well, I remember in the first couple of seasons, just unintentionally, I had gotten a little fat and I was watching the episodes and I was like, Oh, God, Chris, youve really let yourself go,' he said. And then I was like, but this is some of the funniest stuff youve ever done.'

Thats when series co-creator Michael Schur told Pratt hed be happy if the actor gained 30 to 40 pounds for the role. And so I did, the actor recalled. Then it became a challenge. Everyone wanted to see how much I could eat.

Pratt took his newfound goal seriously.

There was a restaurant in Parks and Rec called The Jurassic Fork and that was where we would go to eat, Pratt told ET. They gave us, you know, dinosaur-sized portions. So, I didnt have anything to say in the scene, so inevitably I wanted to get some screen time, so I decided I would eat one rack of ribs per take.

He continued: And if the camera would happen to catch me I would absolutely just be inhaling ribs. I went through 12 takes. I went through 12 racks of ribs, which is the equivalent of six pigs. I dined on the ribs of six different pigs.

It was all helping achieve his main goal on the show: making co-star Nick Offerman laugh. And it worked. was making myself sick, but I had 12 racks of ribs, and then at lunch, because our catering company was creating the ribs, they cooked ribs. And at lunch I sat down with another four racks of ribs, right next to Nick, and ate the ribs. I got a big laugh.

Parks and Rec wasnt the only role that forced the actor to either lose or gain weight. Pratt spoke to Mens Health UK about how gaining and losing weight for roles affected him in the past.

Id gone back and forth, lost weight for Moneyball, got fat again, then trimmed down for Zero Dark Thirty, then gained it all back again for Andy, Pratt said. Thats when I saw Zero Dark Thirty and right after walking out I was like: Im going to get in shape and Im never going to be fat again.'

It appears he stuck to that promise.
