Rays Tyler Glasnow hopes to keep the good times rolling in series finale – Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who starts in Sundays series finale against the Marlins at Tropicana Field, hopes to build upon the dominance he displayed in his past three outings.

Glasnow has won twice and registered a 1.93 ERA (along with 30 strikeouts and just five walks) in the 18 innings of those three starts. Overall, hes 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Glasnow set the bar high last season. Glasnow opened 6-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 46 strikeouts in his first seven games before going on the injured list with a forearm strain.

I dont know how you can improve on that,' Cash said. What hes doing now seems to fall right in line with that.'

Glasnow said he has a better approach now. To paraphrase former Rays manager Joe Maddon, Glasnow is trying easier.

What I took away (from last seasons early outings) was I put too much into the effort level,' Glasnow said. If Im going to do this for 30 starts a year, Im going to need to mellow out a bit.

The biggest difference is not trying to throw the ball 1,000 (miles per hour) every single pitch. You cant really do that for 30 starts a year. Once I realized that being relaxed and having very little tension was good, almost holding the ball lighter and trying to be more smooth, it allowed me to stay the same, if not better. My overall recovery and arm health has been much better.'

Glasnow, who has four consecutive games with eight strikeouts or more, leads the majors with 15.09 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 25 innings pitched). Its an extremely small sample size. But for perspective, Gerrit Cole set the major-league season record (13.81 strikeouts per nine innings) last season, 13.81 strikeouts per nine innings, with the Astros.

Natural first baseman Nate Lowe, who was recalled from the alternate training site at Port Charlotte last week, started at third base Saturday. In 50 games last season with the Rays, Lowe had one start at third, but he has been working more at the position.

The more he can help us in different roles (the better),' Cash said. The (coaches in Port Charlotte) have been very complimentary of Nate and the work he put in at third base. It was part of his daily routine to get reps there. We tell our guys were not asking for anything spectacular. Just put yourself in position to make the routine play.'

Lowe said he feels more agile after dropping about 20 pounds (it had been about 35, but he has gained some back).

Losing weight never was the end goal,' Lowe said. I never said I have to lose 5 more pounds or 10 more pounds. It was about being the healthiest version of me. I played in the minors at 250, 255, and in the spring, I saw 212, 210. Thats a pretty big window, but a lot of guys have success doing it different ways. As long as I can stay on top of my sleep and diet, that puts me in a good spot to show up and compete every day.'

Saturday was Childhood Cancer Awareness Day at Tropicana Field. Rays players wore yellow ribbons on their jerseys to commemorate the occasion. Centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier, who works with the Childrens Dream Fund for kids with life-threatening illnesses, said the cause is especially meaningful.

The positivity and the mindset these kids and families have are truly incredible,' Kiermaier said. I dont think I could be that positive and happy as some of these families. Especially having a young son, I know how fortunate it is to have a healthy, functional son who lives a healthy life.

Its tough for me to find words for how powerful and emotional this is to be around these kids. They have no idea what impact they bring on my life. Im grateful I can have a small impact.'

On the strength of a 21-4 run heading into Saturday tying the best 25-game stretch in club history Kiermaier said the teams confidence remains high.

Confidence is something that I dont think the people on the outside realize how much it can do for an individual or a team,' Kiermaier said. Theres a certain confidence thats just flowing in our clubhouse, whether home or on the road. Its a true joy each day to show up and compete with these guys and see whos going to be the hero on any given night.

Were one of the best teams in baseball, and were aware of that. The greatest thing about us is were not content with that. We want to be the best team in baseball, when all is said and done. We want to be the last team standing. We want to let people know were dangerous and were not messing around.'

Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (left groin tightness) threw a successful bullpen session Friday. Hes scheduled to come off the 10-day injured list Tuesday, when he could draw a road start against the Nationals. Cash said right-handed reliever Oliver Drake (right biceps tendinitis) is progressing well but remains about a week away from active duty. After Sundays series finale, the Rays have 19 games remaining (nine at home, 10 on the road, although the Rays will be at home during one of the road' games against Baltimore, making up for the Aug. 27 postponement). The Rays also have three more off-days in September. ... At Port Charlotte, left-hander Shane McClanahan suffered a left knee hyperextension while attempting to cover first base on a ground ball. He is expected to miss about two weeks.

Chadwick Boseman Gave ‘Thoughtful Response’ About Weight Loss Without Revealing Cancer Battle – International Business Times

KEY POINTS

Chadwick Boseman once gave a "thoughtful response" when asked about his changed appearance after losing weight without disclosing any details about his battle with cancer.

Wayne A.I. Frederick, the president of Howard University, met the "Black Panther" star and Phylicia Rashad for dinner to discuss the school's plans for its Fine Arts program in 2019. Frederick noticed that Boseman looked "smaller than he had been" after losing weight and he presumed it was for a film. He even asked Boseman how difficult it was to change weight for a role.

"In his usual style, he gave a long, detailed answer, explaining that he was a vegetarian and was exercising and trying to take care of himself and do what he had to do," Frederick said as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

"It was a very thoughtful response, never letting on that anything else was happening."

The world only learned about Boseman's battle with cancer when his family announced his death saying that he had been battling the illness for four years already.

"One of his greatest attributes was never burdening anyone else, but being there to shoulder everyone elses burdens," Frederick added.

Many were brokenhearted after learning about Boseman's death. Several took to Twitter and recalled the time some mocked him for his appearance after losing too much weight.

"Chadwick Boseman was relentlessly castigated over his drastic weight loss to the point where he had to delete pictures and turn off comments on IG. Let this be a lesson to be please be mindful about your words & judgements. You dont know what type of battle people are fighting," one wrote on Twitter.

"RIP Chadwick Boseman. I remember when he was trending for his drastic weight loss. Some people expressed genuine concern. Others made memes and jokes. I suppose theres a lesson there for us all," another added.

Looking back, it seems like Boseman could have been hinting at his disease in an interview with Huffington Post writer Matthew Jacobs in 2017. During their conversation, Jacobs also brought up the same weight issue while discussing how the actor had to bulk up and slim down for the roles he portrayed. When Jacobs told the actor, Youve been through the wringer, Boseman responded, Oh, you dont even know. You have no idea. One day Ill live to tell the story.

National Nutrition Week: Coconut oil can help you lose weight, build immunity and also get great skin… – Hindustan Times

Losing weight may seem almost as daunting as keeping the weight off, which requires regular exercise, a healthy diet, and most importantly, the motivation to stay fit and follow a healthy lifestyle.

While there are various diets that one can follow to lose the excess weight and inches, its important to know what youre eating and how is it helping your body for the long haul. Few tweaks in your diet can not only help you burn fat, but also accelerate your weight loss regime.

Coconut oil, for example, has been an indispensable part of most Indian households for several years, and also one thats seen in South-East Asian cuisines and daily lives. Its also a natural beauty solution passed on from generation-to-generation, as its good for both skin and hair or can even be used as a base if you wish to make your own hair oil, mixing various herbs and other oils for added benefits.

Coconut is rightly hailed as Natures Superfood due to its myriad health benefits, and has also been called the tree of life sometimes.

Virgin coconut oils have also been gaining popularity for overall use, especially in cooking and more specifically vegan cooking. Veganism is gradually taking over the world as consciousness rises for doing something for the planet, reducing ones carbon footprint and more. Meat consumption too, has been found to be a major contributor towards global warming in recent times.

Virgin coconut oil is obtained from fresh, matured kernel of the coconut without the use of heat. Using the cold pressing technique of extraction, cold pressed virgin coconut oil has an unfiltered taste and smell and essentially preserves the natural goodness of the oil.

Why you should use coconut oil

Loaded with vitamin E, antioxidants and polyphenols, coconut oil helps balance hormones that prevent weight gain. However, be mindful when investing in this oil variety as not all are the same. Virgin coconut oil is considered the best for weight loss as it does not contain saturated fats, which are a major cause for increased cholesterol levels and other related lifestyle disorders.

According to a study by the Stanford Chiropractic Center, Millions of people across America (not to mention worldwide) struggle with stubborn abdominal fat, which can be difficult to shed even when a healthy lifestyle is adopted. Not only is abdominal fat, also called visceral fat or belly fat, unsightly, it can can lead to an increased risk of a number of health conditions.

Some of the risks associated with carrying excess fat around your middle are a greater susceptibility to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, as this fat tends to coat vital organs, it can cause system-wide inflammation that can trigger an array of other chronic illnesses.

Speaking about virgin coconut oils various benefits, Mumbai-based nutritionist Sheryl Salis says, Virgin Coconut Oil is an oil source containing a high concentration of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) which have shown beneficial effects on weight management. Research suggests that regular consumption of virgin coconut oil reduces food cravings and thereby helps trim abdominal fat, this in turn aids in weight management.

Cooking with virgin coconut oil

The important Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs) present in coconut oil are Lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid which help improve the bodys immunity and also maintain good gut health. Fitness advocates have perpetuated that the oil has several health benefits that can be easily integrated in the daily diet as well. Virgin coconut oil is vegan-friendly and is suitable for all types of cooking, sauting, baking and stir-frying. It can also be used as a base oil to coat vegetables while cooking or to simply dress salads, adds Sheryl Salis.

How to use the oil for hair and skin care

Coconut oils umpteen health benefits also help nourish the hair, promote hair growth, and also condition the scalp.

For a head massage:

1. Heat the oil until its lukewarm and dab it on the scalp with your finger tips or using a small cotton ball. Massage the scalp gently after application

2. Once you have oiled the scalp, you may also choose to oil your hair from roots to the ends

3. Coconut oil can be kept on the hair overnight, or if youre hard-pressed for time then can be washed off 30 minutes after application

Its an effective moisturizer for both the face and the body. Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties keep the skin smooth and hydrated, in turn helping in improving skin elasticity.

Did you know that coconut oil also works miracles as a makeup remover especially when you want to take off waterproof makeup? Just apply it onto the face as a cleanser or use a cotton pad to swipe away makeup residue.

Column: Be smart and safe when trying to lose weight during coronavirus pandemic – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Many people have noticed that clothes are fitting tighter as the pandemic shutdown keeps going. These pandemic pounds have launched a series of weight loss messages from health professionals promoting a healthy weight to decrease risks associated with COVID-19 disease. However, weight loss during a pandemic comes with additional challenges to consider.

Question: What makes dieting risky during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Answer: Cutting calories for rapid weight loss generally cuts down on the supply of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals and protein. When nutrient levels drop too low, the function of the immune system can be impaired, reducing the bodys capacity to handle any infection, especially one like COVID-19.

Q: What is the best way to lose those pandemic pounds safely?

A: Take a moderate-dose multivitamin/mineral supplement. The proper function of the immune system is dependent on an adequate supply of several vitamins and minerals. When eating less food, it is difficult to meet these nutrient needs even if you are making more healthy food choices. A standard multi can fill the gaps.

Keep or increase high-protein foods in the diet. Cut calories by reducing high-carbohydrate and high-fat foods not protein. The immune system requires an adequate supply of high-quality protein.

Maintain muscle. During weight loss, the quickest thing, but the worst thing to lose is body protein mainly in the form of muscles. Muscle tissues use more calories, even at rest, than most other components of the body. So, lose muscle, and the body burns fewer calories, which, of course, makes it harder to keep losing weight or to maintain weight loss.

Exercise enough, but not too much. Protecting body muscle tissues from loss during dieting requires a combination of consuming enough protein and being physically active. Keep in mind that moderate exercise can help to maintain muscle and healthy immune function. However, too little or too much exercise can impair immune system health.

Stay hydrated. During warmer weather, it is easy to get dehydrated. Keep favorite beverages, including water, handy for sipping throughout the day. A simple measure of hydration is the color of urine. If it looks like apple juice, drink more. Bright yellow usually means you recently took a vitamin supplement. Caffeine-containing beverages may pass through a bit quicker, but they still help hydrate.

Aim for gradual loss. Rapid weight loss is not fat loss. If your diet has about 500 calories less than you need each day, that will add up to the loss of about one pound of fat per week. Since something like a 16-ounce coffee temporarily increases weight by a pound, pay more attention to waist size than body weight to monitor successful fat loss.

My Mother-in-Law Told My 12-Year Old to Lose Weight and Fix Her Face – Slate

Care and Feeding is Slates parenting advice column. Have a question for Care and Feeding? Submit it here or post it in the Slate Parenting Facebook group.

Dear Care and Feeding,

I am white, and my husband is Korean. We have two daughters who are 12 and 15. My husband and I both come from big families, but his is tighter-knit than mine, and they all live close by. Of his four siblings, three have kids, and our daughters are close with their cousins.

We had a socially distanced family picnic, and when we were saying goodbye, my mother-in-law started commenting on how nice our older daughter looked. But then, she started telling my younger daughter that she needed to start losing weight if she wanted to look like her sister, and if she was in Korea, she would have taken her to get her eyelids and nose fixed much earlier because when you do it now it wont look as natural.

My younger daughter was mortified, and my older daughter didnt even say anything! I was shocked and tried to bring it up in the car, but my older daughter just said it was how Grandma always was and my younger daughter didnt say anything. When we tried to talk to her about it at home, she said the same thing, that she was just old. We are both very angry at my mother-in-law, and are worried about how this impacted our daughters self-esteem. What can we do to get them to open up, and how can we confront Grandma?

Beauty Queens

Dear BQ,

I think its telling that your older daughter was unsurprised by your mother-in-laws behavioreither the blas reaction of a teen or this is something shes heard before, even if you havent.

I think youre right to be angry at your mother-in-law, but she said what she said, and its a challenge to now undo the effect of that on your daughters beyond pointing out the obvious: that its ridiculous, its her opinion, and that losing weight or plastic surgery (!) are not something either of your beautiful children ought to be thinking about in the least.

Fortunately for you, youve been communicating to your daughter for yearsexplicit and tacit messages about your belief in their worth and intellect and yes, their beauty too. One unkind remark from their grandmother cant undo that, or entirely shatter their self-image.

Still, its hurtful to tell anyone, let alone a still-developing child, that they need to worry about such things. So you should confront Grandma in specific terms: that shes not to ever say such things to either of your children, and that if she does, there will be real consequences in terms of her ability to spend time with her granddaughters. Cultural and generational difference is at play here, but thats no excuse; stick up for what you value as parents, and stick up for your kids, too.

Dear Care and Feeding,

Due to her moms COVID-induced work challenges, we unexpectedly had my 14-year old stepdaughter, Alex, with us for the last months of eighth grade this spring, and Alex will be with us for ninth grade this fall. She usually spends summers with us and the school year with her mom in a different state.

Shes a bright and curious kid who excelled at her local school, but things didnt go as well here last spring, where she socialized well but struggled with grade-level reading and writing. We thought part of it might have been the upheaval, but we worked with her teachers and pediatrician to get her screened for any possibly missed diagnoses. The consensus was that her previous state had lower expectations for grade-level work than our local public school, and that shes a normal kid whos behind on instruction.

We communicated with her mom throughout the process and sent on the teachers recommendations for reading and writing catch-up for her to try at her moms over the summer. Now fall is coming, and both her parents agree that theyd like her to be here for school. Alex is upset and angry about it all. Add in remote learning, and the likelihood that Ill be doing most of the communication with her teachers and encouraging her at home, and it feels overwhelming. How do we work together to get her on track for a better fall? Her mom is a solid co-parent, but very overwhelmed at work and not as concerned about education as my husband or I am, so Mom will not be leading this.

Suddenly a Schoolteacher

Dear SaS,

The particulars of your case aside, what youre going through is playing out in households across the country, mine included. Obviously, parenting a teenager is hard work. That this one isnt accustomed to living with you during the school year is one complication; the ongoing pandemic is of course another. But Alex is fortunate to have three parents on her side!

Education is your priority, and you probably already know that the way to navigate this with your kid is to get organizedprinting schedules, stocking up on supplies, making a dedicated workspaceand get involved: communicate with the teachers, familiarize yourself with Alexs schedule and what her different classes require of her.

Its a lot but dont forget that your husband is around, too. You dont mention whether hes working, but perhaps you can enlist him to take an active role as well. If you monitor Alexs video classes and work during the day, maybe he can step in to help with homework, or attend virtual school meetings and the like.

The other thing Id like to remind you of is to be generous to both yourself and your stepdaughter. These are extraordinary times, and high school is a fraught time, and parents who arent themselves teachers are going to have difficulties! I share your respect for education, but Id point out that there are many different ways to inculcate that. Not every worksheet needs to be done, sometimes teens run late or space on homework, and the occasional below-average mark doesnt correlate to actual intelligence. You should push Alex to the standard you know she can meet, but you should remember that sometimes a kid does need to ditch the schoolwork and sit outside on the phone with friends, or space out in front of a movie. The tough truth is that this academic period will be a lost year for a lot of students. You can do a lot to keep Alex on track, but youre one woman, not a school. Good luck to you; good luck to all of us.

Dear Care and Feeding,

My husband and I have 17-year-old identical twin sons, Joey and Nick, who are starting their senior year soon. Since they were little, they have stuck close together in school, and have always been best friends. Nick is a serious swimmer, and has been scouted for swimming at UCLA, which he plans to attend. Joey is now saying that he also wants to go to UCLA, but whenever he mentions it, Nick looks uncomfortable. I asked Nick how he feels about Joeys plan, and he says he doesnt want them to be near each other forever, but doesnt want to start a big fight so hes not saying anything. He asked me if I could drop hints to Joey that he doesnt like the idea or convince him to apply elsewhere. I feel conflicted. Theyre 17, and should be able to have a mature discussion, but I also know the feeling of knowing youre going to start a fight and avoiding it at all costs. Should I talk to Joey or make Nick do it? Either way, what should I say?

College Conundrum

Dear CC,

While I understand your desire to step aside and let your boys sort this out, I am also mindful of the fact that this might be one of the last times youll be called in to referee. That Nick asked for your help is telling, but I think hes the one you should talk to, not his brother.

Remind him of how close they are and have always been. Reassure him that hes not wrong to want some independence now, and that its best for his relationship with his brother if they are able to discuss this candidly. It doesnt have to be a big fightinstead, it can be a big opportunity, a chance to talk about what the next chapter of their life looks like. Both boys might be craving independence; both boys might be fearing separation. How they determine to negotiate that could help them avoid resentment and ensure their particular bond endures over the coming years.

Theyre still teens, and still at home, so you can step in should this play out as confrontation instead of conversation. But try to guide them toward finding a resolution on their own, much as you taught them to tie shoelaces or brush teeth, practicing for independence. Good luck.

Dear Care and Feeding,

My husband and I got a divorce two years ago because he couldnt handle my coming out as bisexual. My long-term girlfriend just moved in. Our 5-year-old daughter adores her, and our 9-year old son always seemed to get along with her. He got upset with us recently when I took away the iPad for ruining his sisters project on purpose and shouted that we were a just a pair of d*kes and he didnt have to listen to us. He was sent to his room, had to apologize, and had devices taken away for a month (and we will definitely be watching documentaries on homophobia later).

When he cooled off, I explained that it was never, ever OK to use slurs and asked if hed heard it at school. He said that it was what his dad called us, and that his dad told him he was a man and didnt have to listen to us. I was furious, but not exactly shocked. My ex had always been a little conservative, although never homophobic. I dont know what to do now though. I already have majority and sole legal custody, but should I try to get sole custody? Should I confront my ex? What else should I talk to my kids about?

Disappointed in Dad

Dear DiD.

Im so very sorry. Its incredibly cruel when acrimonious divorce affects kids, and this is a terrible thing your husband has done to his childrento give his son hateful language, and further teach him to direct it at you and your partner, is inexcusable. Its immaterial whether hes a homophobe or simply an embittered ex; telling a boy that he is a man, and therefore excused from having to obey his mother or any woman, is poisonous and absurd.

I think you should explain this to him. Perhaps do it in writing if you dont trust your ability to talk to him calmly. Im not saying hell respond rationally to reason, but I think you have something to say and youll feel better saying it.

Whether this rises to the level of your securing sole custody of the children is something you can answer and I cannot. In my opinion, your ex clearly did a hateful and awful thing. But it may be a priority for you to provide your children some relationship with their father, or there might be some other factor that makes you desire some support from this man.

Its easy for me or some other disinterested party to say go nuclear, but I understand that life is often more complex. So I would begin by communicating to your ex that hate speech is beyond the pale, and in particular this kind of bigotry toward the kids own mother. Perhaps he will understand; perhaps he will learn something. If he does not, I hope that you will talk to the lawyer or whomever you worked with on the separation and seek their advice. Im really sorry this happened, and wish you well.

Rumaan

My 21-year-old niece is six weeks pregnant. She currently has no job, no permanent address, no health insurance, and no partner. My partner and I recently bought a house and have a spare bedroom. When I heard my niece was pregnant, my first thought was that if she didnt want to keep it, we should take it. Should we?

Benefits of cucumber juice: Can this trendy drink help you lose weight? – Yahoo News

Cucumbers are not what I would consider a glamorous vegetable. When I get them in my farm share, I turn to the old standbys I add them to salads, make pickles, or blend them up in a gazpacho.

But I did some research, and the internet is full of amazing health claims about the lowly cucumber and its juice. What is cucumber juice good for? Online, youll read that its the best rejuvenation tonic in the world. It can cleanse and detox the entire body. Its anti-inflammatory. It can bring down a fever. It burns belly fat, too!

Are any of these cucumber juice nutrition claims true? Sadly, no, according to dietitians who spoke with TODAY. I do think they have some health properties. However, I think the benefits of juices are overstated, said Samantha Cassetty, a nutrition and weight-loss expert with a virtual nutrition counseling practice based in New York City.

Julia Denison, clinical nutrition coordinator at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Magee-Womens Hospital, told TODAY that the main benefit of cucumbers is their high water content. Theyre a hydrating vegetable, she said. A lot of other vegetables kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, carrots, green beans have more nutrients.

While other veggies might top the cucumbers nutritional profile, cucumbers do have their strengths. They contain vitamins A, C and K, as well as antioxidants and a little bit of calcium and iron. They also provide a type of fiber called lignin, and experimental studies have suggested that lignin might help protect against estrogen-related cancers, Cassetty said.

Related: Has your health taken a back seat last few months? A dietitian offers an array of simple tips to help boost it one day at a time.

And juicing could give you more of some of these nutrients because youre probably going to juice about two cucumbers to yield a glass of cucumber juice. But when you juice cucumbers, youre removing the valuable fiber and the nutrients that are found in the skin.

Story continues

Its better to eat whole vegetables, Cassetty said. Thats going to be more filling, and you get the fiber in addition to the water.

Whole cucumbers and whole veggies, in general bring benefits that you lose when you juice them. Whole vegetables help you feel satiated. Thats for two reasons chewing your food and taking longer to eat both help you feel full. When you drink something, it tends to not produce the same amount of fullness, Cassetty said.

There are some cucumber juice health benefits cucumber juice, cucumber celery juice or any vegetable juice is better than nothing. Cassetty said juicing can come in handy for people who dont like the taste of vegetables, dont like to cook or have demanding work schedules without much time to sit down and eat.

Denison said to watch the ingredients in store-bought cucumber juice, since there could be added sugar: It could be essentially the same as soda.

Its easy to figure out how to make cucumber juice at home if you have a juicer, just run the cucumbers through it. You can also blend cucumbers into smoothies that way you retain the fiber and the nutrients in the skin.

Cucumbers are a low-calorie, low-carb, water-rich food, so they can be part of calorie-control or low-carb diets, and they can be helpful with weight maintenance. But cucumber juice wont melt away body fat. Everyone wants something that will magically help them lose weight. Cucumber juice is not that, Denison said.

Cassetty suggested pairing cucumber with protein or fat try cucumber sticks or slices with hummus, a boiled egg, tuna or olive tapenade to bring in other nutrients. It raises the enjoyment factor they taste good together, she said.

There are benefits of cucumber water. If it helps you drink more water, it can fight the fatigue that comes with suboptimal hydration. Denison suggested that people infuse water with cucumber to give it a different taste.

Cassetty agreed: A lot of times people who dont like water think its boring or bland. Adding cucumber can help build a healthy habit.

Heres how can you eat carbs and still lose weight – PINKVILLA

Theres a common saying that to lose weight, we have to cut down the intake of carbs. But this is quite misleading because you can and should eat carbs that will aid in weight loss as well.

If we try to have a look at the to-do list for weight loss, there are endless things to maintain. And one of the most important of all is cutting out the intake of carbs. But, unfortunately, this is one of the biggest misconceptions amongst people, according to some nutritionists.

Scientifically, we have to understand the differences between refined and complex carbs. Our brain can efficiently process glucose to produce energy. And the starch, found in carbs, can actually help us eat less, burn more calories, feel energised, lower stress and cholesterol level. So, basically, we can eat carbs and still lose weight. Heres how.

Tips to eat carbs for losing weight:

1.We can eat carbs, but that doesnt mean there is no rule for it. We just have to make it healthier. For example, instead of indulging in potato chips, roast some potato wedges with olive oil and have them.

2. A ketogenic diet is all about lowering your carbs intake and increasing the consumption of fats. Though its highly beneficial for people with diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, keto is not the only way to reduce your carb intake. In the keto diet, youre having 50 grams of carbs per day. But generally, you can have 100-150 grams of carbs per day that consists of fruits and a small amount of starchy foods like potatoes.

3.Even low-carb diet can also increase your body weight. While you are on a low-carb diet, you tend to have the foods that are high in fat and calories; they cause weight gain. So, you can also have cheese, nuts, cream, etc. but with portion control. No matter, which diet plan you follow, portion control is a must.

4.Another reason for having carbs is that it contains fibre in it, which is highly beneficial for our gut health. And fibre is also connected to weight loss and management. So, include mix veggies and whole grains in your diet to increase fibre consumption.

5.Apart from all of these mentioned above, consumption of carbs makes you happy because it plays an important role in releasing serotonin, a happy hormone.

6. Cutting out carb intake entirely is quite unsustainable as well. Rather, people should focus more on portion control for whatever they eat. A balanced diet with the right proportions of protein, carbohydrate, fats and fibre is key for weight loss.

5 great ways to lose weight after hitting 50 – The Indian Express

Managing weight isnt always easy, and can get slightly more difficult once you turn 50. But you can always begin with making some healthy changes to your everyday routine. As the years go by, medical problems and diet restrictions contribute to the difficulty in maintaining your waistline, said Atul Kapoor, founder, Sense Bio.

The reasons for the same are numerous ranging from slower metabolism to inactive schedule, and also the development of sarcopenia or the natural loss of muscle mass which makes it more challenging to shed unwanted fat stored in the body. He added, Additionally, there are risks associated with nutritional deficiencies that begin to create complications in old age, further hampering the weight loss process.

That is why we are here with a few easy tips to help you navigate through your weight loss journey. Take a look below.

Note your calorie intake

Ageing brings a lot of changes in the composition and metabolism of the body, and people who are above the age of 50 years are at higher risk of gaining weight, said Kapoor, highlighting why it is essential to tweak ones eating habits.

We often tend to consume more calories than what is required by our bodies which results in gradual weight gain. In order to estimate calorie intake, one can keep a food diary to track food, daily activities along with weight. There are many apps available that can be used to calculate calorie goals for managing daily calorie intake, he said.

Say yes to strength training

When it comes to weight loss, cardio sessions are given extreme importance. However, while it works well for the young population, it can show contrary results in older adults, said Kapoor, adding that sincemuscle mass declines with age, it slows down the metabolism which makes the weight loss process longer than usual. Several studies show that after the age of 50, muscle mass starts declining by 1-2 per cent per year while its strength goes down by 1.5-5 per cent per year, says Mr Kapoor.

This is where strength training comes to your rescue. Strategic weight lifting and bodyweight exercises significantly improve muscle strength and make your body feel active. This not only helps to boost metabolism but also helps in reducing body fat.

Increase your protein intake

A protein-rich diet is crucial for older adults because it is the key to maintaining muscle mass and strength. It not only aids in weight loss but also assists in reversing muscle loss due to ageing. Many fitness experts recommend limiting the consumption of red meat. One can replace it with lean protein sources like eggs, lentils, chicken breast and nuts to meet nutrition goals, suggested Kapor. These sources make you feel fuller for long and accelerate the calorie-burning process.

Get your dose of hydration

Hydration is the key, whether you are young or old. As we start to age, the sensation of thirst starts to decrease. Thus, older people are more at the risk of dehydration which is not good for health and weight loss. Go for fresh juices, tea, and steer clear of packed and added preservatives and sugar drinks since they are strongly linked to weight gain, he said.

Get your sleep cycle on track

Sleeping less can cause way more than just dark circles and under-eye bags. It causes metabolic dysfunction in the body and hinders weight loss. Not only that but it also increases appetite. Sleep-deprived adults experience day-time fatigue that makes them less motivated to do physical activities, he concluded.

Dieters might be choosing the wrong way to lose weight – Escanaba Daily Press

Metro photoDieters who pick healthier options may inadvertently be eating more and sabotaging their own weight loss goals.

(THE CONVERSATION) The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work.

The big idea

Dieters looking for a healthier substitute of their favorite high-fat food such as a bag of potato chips typically have two choices in the grocery aisle: a smaller package of the exact same food or a larger portion of a light version. In a series of studies, we put this choice to consumers and found that people who frequently try to cut back on their eating or are essentially always on a diet known as restrained eaters prefer the larger portion size of the light version, even though both contained the exact same number of calories. Participants who indicated that they rarely dieted tended to pick the smaller size with the full flavor.

Our first study involved a vending machine choice between a medium-sized bag of Lays Baked BBQ potato chips and a smaller package of the regular version both 150 calories. Participants who took a survey in which they reported frequently trying to cut back on their eating for example, by taking smaller servings and skipping meals opted for the larger bag of baked chips. We got similar results over four additional studies involving other snacks, such as popcorn and cookies.

Why it matters

People tend to want food to be tasty, healthy and filling. Our studys restrained eaters were definitely interested in choosing a snack that seemed healthier, but their choice of the larger size suggested they wanted a snack that they felt would make them feel full as well possibly at the expense of taste. Feeling full can help people consume fewer calories overall.

The problem is research suggests eating more of lighter foods might not make people feel full, and this may point to a reason why most diets fail. Some psychologists argue that restrained eaters do not achieve the health and weight outcomes they desire possibly because, in depriving themselves of the fattier, tastier food, they may later engage in binge-eating or overconsume.

By opting for the lighter, less pleasurable food, even in larger packages, restrained eaters might be depriving themselves of the food they actually crave regular chips, buttered popcorn or a sugary cookie.

What still isnt known

More research is ultimately needed, however, to test whether the emphasis on increasing the portion sizes that one can eat of light foods, rather than focusing on eating smaller portions of foods that are more satisfying, is a successful long-term strategy. Or, as past research indicates, might it actually backfire and contribute to failed dieting? Its still not entirely clear.

Whats next

At the moment, we are working on new research examining how people decide what to eat, how much to eat and how frequently to eat it. For example, why do some people decide to try to avoid any treats, whereas others try to seek moderation? If they seek moderation in their diet, would they rather have a small treat every day or have a cheat day on the weekend?

Were also trying to understand whether or not consumers actually feel as full as they think they do by eating more lighter foods rather than less of calorie-dense foods.

How we do our work

We use a variety of approaches in our research on food, including conducting lab and online-based experiments, field studies and exploring existing data sets, such as food diary data. For this particular research, we recruited participants to pick chips out of a vending machine and used online panels to simulate real-world choices.
