Falcons’ former first-round pick Takkarist McKinley says he’s motivated after fifth-year option not picked up – ESPN
Atlanta Falcons defensive end Takkarist McKinley is motivated after having his fifth-year option declined and is determined to prove his worth this season as a former 26th overall draft selection.
The Falcons, who selected McKinley in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, decided in April not to pick up the fifth-year option worth just over $10 million. In a statement, the team said it was taking a "wait-and-see approach'' in terms of any future contract with McKinley, who managed just 3.5 sacks last season and has 16.5 sacks in 45 career games.
"You can only control what you can control,'' McKinley said Saturday. "I can't talk to TD [general manager Thomas Dimitroff] and beg him, 'Hey man, accept my fifth-year option.' I can't do that. That's up to them. ... Whatever I showed in the [three] years, they decided to decline my option, which is cool. I still got another year here, still got another year to prove myself.''
Pressed on whether having his option declined is extra motivation, McKinley said, "It was a wake-up call. It was more motivation. It made me hungry, you feel me? Not saying I wasn't hungry in the past. Just got to go prove it.''

McKinley has had issues with both shoulders and is coming back from offseason shoulder surgery. He dropped a significant amount of weight and is now at 248 pounds, down from close to 270 last season. The UCLA product spent the entire offseason in California with Laura Scott of ProSport Physical Therapy & Performance.
"Pretty much went at it Monday through Saturdays,'' McKinley said. "Pretty much all day to lose weight and get in the best shape of my life.''
Falcons coach Dan Quinn immediately noticed the difference in McKinley.
"From a rehab standpoint, he really looks rock solid,'' Quinn said. "He's dropped weight. He's strong. But I think the speed part, that was one of the things he and I discussed during the offseason. So he's lighter than he has been totally by design to make sure one of the very best parts of his game is his speed and his get-off.
"As far as the strength [of his shoulder], he really stayed disciplined to the plan as the rehab portion goes. So he's off to a good start with it. The first day of contact he wanted to see it and trust it.''
McKinley has the one year and $1,858,200 remaining on his contract before becoming a free agent. Whether he returns to the Falcons depends on how he performs in 2020. The Falcons have enhanced their pass rush with the addition of veteran Dante Fowler Jr. and rookie Marlon Davidson while cutting ties with former first-rounder Vic Beasley Jr., now with the Tennessee Titans. Pro Bowler Grady Jarrett leads the defensive line, while McKinley said Fowler already has helped tutor him on aspects such as countermoves.
McKinley tried to give some context to his performance the past three seasons.
"Obviously I wish my first three seasons could be 10-plus sacks, but that doesn't happen that way,'' he said. "Life is a roller coaster. I don't think nobody's life has always been just up. It always comes up and down. It's been very inconsistent for me, my NFL career. But that don't mean I'm about to give up. I still believe in myself. My coaches believe in me. My teammates believe in me. And my family believes in me. And I believe in myself.
"At the end of the day, I know what I can do. For me, the biggest thing is just finishing. I left a lot of sacks out there last year. This year, not trying to do the same thing.''
There have been questions about McKinley's maturity and tendency to lash out at others, particularly via social media. There also was an unexplained incident where McKinley reportedly was detained and given a mental evaluation in Los Angeles two years ago, an incident Quinn said the team took seriously because of its sensitively and possible relation to his mental health.
McKinley was asked about his maturity level.
"I'm still me, I'm not going to lie to you,'' he said. "At the end of the day, I am who I am. I'm not out at the clubs partying. I'm not in the strip clubs. I'm not doing dumb stuff. I come to work every day. I train. I work, go home, watch film, play Call of Duty, play [NBA] 2K. Wake up and do it again.
"I'm not out here doing stupid stuff.''

Modaks are not just tasty but they have health benefits too, revealed celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar. In an Instagram post, she explained in detail how the ingredients of modak boost ones health.
Constipation: The ghee used to make modak helps in rebuilding intestinal mucus lining and eliminating toxins, Diwekar said.
Blood pressure: The coconut filling has medium-chain triglycerides that protect the heart and keep blood pressure levels in check.
Cholesterol: Diwekar mentioned that coconut, along with dry fruits used in the filling, have plant sterols that help reduce bad cholesterol and boost good cholesterol levels.

Diabetes: Modaks have medium to low glycemic index and can be safely consumed by diabetics, wrote Diwekar. It is beneficial for a steady blood sugar response, she added.
Arthritis: The butyric acid found in ghee is a traditional therapy for reducing inflammation in every tissue of the body, more specifically in the joints, the nutritionist mentioned.
PCOD: Polycystic ovary disease is a hormonal disorder that causes enlarging of ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. According to Diwekar, the rice flour used to make modak stabilises blood sugar. Besides, rice contains vitamin B1, which helps reduce PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and sugar cravings.
Thyroid: Diwekar wrote, Celebrated as an anti-ageing mixture, this is one delicacy that your thyroid gland will thank you for.
Weight loss: Turns out, modak can promote weight loss also. The traditional sweet is low on the glycemic index and is full of good fats. Modak is also celebrated as food for virya, which means vigour in the body and stability in the mind, Diwekar wrote in her post.

One of the worlds most frequent fliers reveals how he lost more than 30 pounds while staying at home.

Josh Gates has scaled the planets most remote mountains, trekked through its densest jungles and ventured to the depths of its darkest caves. Pre-pandemic, Gates was spending the majority of his year overseas while filming the hit Discovery Channel series Expedition Unknown. It was a lifestyle that made the 43-year-old adventurer an expert at sleeping on airport floors and grabbing mealsany kind of mealson the go.
The result was a lack of regular exercise and healthy diet that Gates says made a healthy lifestyle difficult. But recently, the everymans adventurer has changed his routine, dropping more than 30 pounds since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic while inadvertently documenting the results onscreen. This week, I connected with Gates to see how one of the worlds most frequent fliers views fitness in the field.
Joe Sills: What is your typical travel schedule like?
Josh Gates: Pre-pandemic, it was being overseas 200-plus days a year. We have a really aggressive travel schedule at Expedition Unknown. We spend a lot of time out of the country and we spend most of the time that we are back either preparing for the next expedition or writing, editing and getting shows ready to air. It really is a year-round lifestyle.
Joe Sills: It sounds more like a lifestyle than a job.
Josh Gates: Yes. It is. When you are out there on the road, everything you do is servicing the show. We are not really in tourist destinations usually. We are out there in the middle of the jungle, out in the desert somewhere, or at an archaeological site. Everything you are doing is about trying to tell the story of whatever legend or mystery or artifact we are studying that week.
Joe Sills: When did you make the conscious decision to lose weight while you were at home?
Josh Gates: I think everybody during the pandemic has gone one of two ways: either you havent paid attention to your fitness at all and youre at home and stuffing your face. Or, like a lot of people, you have become goal-oriented because you can focus on different things.
I spent a few weeks sitting at home not doing much, and it kind of hit meI have this time and it is important to use this time. Theres so much about this current situation that is tragic, but it is also a real shakeup for most of us from this routine that we are in. For me, the pandemic was an opportunity to craft a new routine.
Joe Sills: At last check, you said youve lost about 35 pounds since March. Describe your journey with weight.
Josh Gates: I am kind of a lifelong lose weight, gain weight kind of guy. Im a big guy; Ive always been a big guy. I go through phases where I am being really disciplined and lose weight. Then, I go through phases where I am super stressed out and stuck in an editing bay all day or unable to find healthy food, or Im eating chips on the side of the road on the other side of the world somewhere.
It really depends, I kind of go up and down like most people.
Joe Sills: How easy is it to just order takeout when youre in the editing bay?
Josh Gates: I think thats where most of us get into troublewith prepacked, processed food. A lot of our weight struggles in general have to do with that. Sometimes, the easiest food to get your hands on is the stuff thats the worst for you. Its the most high in saturated fat. Its the most calorie dense, and its really the least nutritiously beneficial stuff.
Theres a reason fast food is popular: its cheap and easy to get.
I have a mindless diet and a conscious diet. My mindless diet is pizza and carbs. I love carbs. I could go forever without eating ice cream and sweets, but for me the pizza and bread are weak spots. I have to moderate that. If you want to lose weight, limiting carb intake and eating a lot of fresh vegetables while being conscious of your sugar intake works.
Joe Sills: Have you ever felt limited in the field because you were riding that rollercoaster and maybe weighed a little more than you wanted to at the time?
Josh Gates: Yeah, I think that and age. Adventuring around the world is a young mans game. I am not in my 20s anymore. But a lot of it isnt so much that I am out of breath. I actually have pretty good endurance still. I can go hike up a mountain and carry a heavy pack for a long time. Its my knees that are not as strong as they used to be and my flexibility. Its my core strength.
If you havent worked out in a while, the first week or two can be miserable. But, once you start getting into it again and being active, its amazing how incredibly quick you gain back a lot of that muscle memory and that strength.
Joe Sills: Tell me about your workout routine. What are you doing now to stay fit?
Josh Gates: I think a lot of people are intimidated by figuring out their perfect workout routine. For me, its a much more simple philosophy. Its about moving. Its about being active. I am not trying to get into a specific kind of shape or train for a specific thing. I am at my best when I am being active every day and making time in my schedule every single day to go jogging or hiking or go for a walk. Even a simple 30-minute walk can do wonders for your day. My routine is a combination of that and monitoring what I eat.
I am a big believer in calorie tracking. Its not for everyonebecause it requires a lot of attentionbut for a lot of us who kind of mindlessly eat, it works. I am kind of a stress eater, and a fitness tracking app can do wonders for that. It is so instructional to see what you think you eat in a day compared to what you really eat in a day.
A lot of the things that we mindlessly eat, like a bag of chips or a snack, are not even a satisfying experience to eat. They are just a quick carb load or sugar rush. For me, its about being mindful. I have a great relationship with my Apple Watch and my calorie tracking app. I use it everyday and just let that keep me honest.

Joe Sills: Your new show, Josh Gates Tonight started right when the pandemic hit, and its interesting to literally watch your weight loss journey unfold weekly onscreen. How did that show come about?
Josh Gates: It was something of a weird miracle. We were well-positioned to film something when the pandemic hit, because we make a lot of after shows for Expedition Unknown that are kind of in the wheelhouse of a talk show already. We also had lights and cameras laying around, and because I am very involved in the show already, I have some facility to set that stuff up.
Really quickly, we threw Josh Gates Tonight together in a spare bedroom in my house, which had bookcases in it that looked sort of adventurous and had some of my artifacts on them. Then, we started having conversations with people over Zoom. At the time, we didnt know how that was going to translate onscreen but it has become the norm.
Its been a fascinating adventure for me. Its a different muscle to flex and I am having such a blast talking to celebrities and really interesting people, while giving folks a break every week that lets them have some fun.
Joe Sills: As someone whose career is based onscreen, people might assume you are always comfortable in your own skin. Do you ever find yourself looking back at old footage and not loving the way you look?
Josh Gates: No. I think you cant get too caught up in that or you are chasing the wrong thing. I have just always been a big guy. Ive never been some buff adventure dude. But the thing about me is I am authentically this guy. I travel the world. I climb up mountains. I go to really distant, exotic and far away places. I know that I walk the walk. I am that guy.
I have never felt pressured by any network I have ever worked for or anybody to change the way that I look.
I think all of us would love to snap our fingers and be Chris Pratt, but in the real world, as long as I am able to get out there and move around and have adventures and go to all of the places that the show takes us, I feel great about it.
Making Expedition Unknown is such a challenge. Just to get access to the places we go and investigate these stories, following them to the places that those tales take us around the world is a challenge. Thats where my focus really is, and I try to be as healthy as I can be along the way.
Joe Sills: I feel like you are a normal guy and youre inspirational to other normal guys who want to do great things.
Josh Gates: I think thats a big part of the appeal of the show. When people watch Expedition Unknown, the impression I want to give them is that they are along for the journey. In order to invite somebody on a trip and take them with you around the world, you have to have authenticity. What we are not trying to do is present this overly heroic version of things.
We go, we have these adventures; but we also want to show all of the flat tires and bad food and the things that go wrong that go along with it. Part of the mission of the show is keeping it real, in that sense.
Joe Sills: Is Josh Gates Tonight going to continue until youre able to film Expedition Unknown again?
Josh Gates: Like all things right now, that is a bit of a mystery. The show has been really well received. It is rating really well, so I think we are all really happy to keep making it for now.
We are having great conversations with great guests every week. We have had on famous athletes like Shaq. We have had famous actors and archaeologists and explorers. Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming on soon. Its an awesome way to see the world and hang out and have a cocktail with interesting people every week.
That said, I am excited to travel. Thats my thing. It has been supremely weird for me to not get on an airplane. That has been my life. I lived on airlines and lived on airport floors. My whole life was based on the weird ecosystem of airports, so thats been a huge adjustment for me. I miss that world. Its what I love to do, so I am hopeful to get back out to adventuring the world soon, but I am also really happy that fans love Josh Gates Tonight.

Joe Sills: As a new talk show host, is there a guest you would find intimidating to interview. Say, David Letterman?
Josh Gates: I would be terrified to talk to David Letterman. Terrified.
There are definitely guests who I sat down and fired up the Zoom for, and I was nervous with sweaty palms. But the longer I do the show, the more I am able to sit down and realize that all of the folks are going through the same thing the rest of us are. All of the red carpet glitz and glamour they are usually framed in has been stripped away. They are just hanging out. Their kids are in the background, and they are just down-to-earth, interesting people with amazing life stories that want to chat.
Joe Sills: Can you give the readers a detailed artifact to spot in the background of your set? Something that has a cool story behind it?
Josh Gates: I have to tell you that my office on the show is actually my office. It is not a fake set. It really is the room I work out of. We redesigned it a bit during the pandemic. It has a lot more detail behind me, because we took a lot of my items out of storage and dressed the back of the room nicely. But almost everything behind me is real.
There are masks from countries I have been to. There is an architectural piece from a beautiful Indonesian traditional house that was gifted to me. There are a bunch of spears I have collected. We did an episode on Nefertiti and theres a 3D print of her face behind me. I have hidden many Easter eggs on the set that I like to see if people can see or call out. So if youre an eagle-eyed viewer, you can spot those.

What we learned from Michael Mosley’s Lose a Stone in 21 Days – Get The Gloss
The final episode of Michael Mosley's Channel 4 weight loss show airs tonight. From how to burn fat to making mushroom pizza, it's been quite the learning curve
Let's be honest, diets with screamer headlines promising to drop 10 pounds in 10 days!, or get a flat tummy in five! sound attractive but we all know a marketing ploy when we see one and are more likely to grab another kettle chip than sign up. So how is Channel 4s new hit series Lose a Stone in 21 Days with Michael Mosley, of which the final episode airs tonight, different?
The three-part show which put five volunteers o a three-week rapid weight loss diet, focuses on losing 'corona' pounds. It comes after reports that two-thirds of the population put on weight in lockdown. In July the government launched a major new obesity strategy urging UK adults to lose weight in order to reduce the risk of serious illness including COVID 19. It includes an NHS app with a 12-week weight loss programme.
We know that obesity significantly increases the chance of becoming seriously ill from coronavirus, as well as being a risk factor for a host of other life-limiting diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Shedding the extra pounds has become a potentially life-saving intervention.
The doctor behind the show Michael Mosley is the creator of The Fast Diet 5:2 diet and The Fast 800 online plan, says in episode one of the three-part series, Its not about looking good in a swimsuit, its about fighting disease. And with the chances of becoming seriously ill with COVID increasing with your BMI, obesity has become an even more pressing health issue.
Dr. Mosleys intermittent fasting-style diet Fast 800 plans, which involve both fast and slower weight loss routes and health maintenance, are based on the Mediterranean way of eating and claim to have helped hundreds of people shed pounds quickly, safely and sustainably. It is based on several studies of an 800 calorie diet to achieve major weight loss and remission from type 2 diabetes. In this show, he puts five volunteers on his 'very fast' very low carb weight loss plan of 800 calories a day, supervised by himself and his GP wife Dr. Clare Bailey.
It's not without controversy though. The first episode caused a Twitter backlash with some arguing that such rapid weight loss was triggering for people with eating disorders. Eating disorder charity Beat announced that it was extending the hours of its helpline to 11pm to coincide with the airing of the show. Meanwhile, Dr Mosley told ITV's This Morning that the chosen method was based on methodology on several recent big randomised controlled trials. He also points out in the programme that the NHS is beginning to trial rapid weight loss diets "with suitable patients".
The programmes volunteers put their lockdown weight gain down to factors we can all relate to: increased snacking while bored, isolation, picking from kids plates, moving back in with mum and dad to delicious home-cooked meals as well as extra drinking to manage stress. While their weight, cholesterol levels, BMI, and blood sugar scores were worrying at the start, Dr. Mosley assured them that change was possible. Three weeks on the 800 calorie diet switches you from burning sugar to burning fat and is a really rapid way to change things and within a short time you stop getting hungry, he encouraged. As a type 2 diabetic himself eight years ago, hes been there.
After three weeks Dr. Mosley will measure how losing weight by eating healthy food and taking moderate exercise has improved their immunity.
This is what we have learned so far (and if you are planning to go on a diet, please consult your doctor first).
Its no surprise that two-thirds of us admitted to piling on the pounds during lockdown if our biscuit consumption is anything to go by. Dr. Mosely had this and other sobering statistics to share. Surveys showed that in the first five weeks of lockdown, 16 per cent of us had already put on an extra five pounds. And in the four weeks leading up to lockdown, sales of crisps and snacks shot up by 33 per cent. In crisis, we reach for all the wrong foods, says Dr Mosley.
Its not just food. Half a bottle of wine a night piles on an extra empty 400 calories, adds Dr. Mosley, not to mention the fact that we all make worse food choices when weve had a drink.
Your metabolic age gives a picture of how old you are on this inside and is a comparison of your basal metabolic rate or BMR, the rate at which your body burns calories compared to others in your age group. The volunteers, stepped on a metabolic weighing scale to find their BMR (you can buy similar ones such as the Tanita RD-953S Connect Body Composition Monitor Scale 175) and discovered they had a metabolic age up to 15 years older than their chronological age. To gain a fuller picture of their health, Dr. Mosely also gave them a blood test and a breath test as well as measuring their waist relative to their height, because
Anything outside of that range and it means you have too much belly fat or visceral fat, the red flag fat around the internal organs which puts you at risk of certain cancers, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, notes Dr. Mosley all of which will knock years off your life.
Were one of the fattest nations in Europe but were also in denial, says Dr. Mosley as he took to the streets to ask shoppers to estimate their waist size before giving them a tape measure to find out what it was in reality. Most people underestimated theirs by around ten inches. A survey of 2,000 people showed this was not unusual. Only one in ten people who are obese actually realise it, he says.
We dont need reminding that if food is in sight were more likely to graze. That office tray of donuts doesnt stay unloved for long. Dr. Mosley instructs his dieters to chuck their nemesis, from biscuits to booze, down the sink, bin it or even stamp on it. (Remembering Miranda from Sex and the City squeezing washing up liquid onto the cake shed picked at from the bin, putting the bin outside is not a bad idea either).

The body has two sources of fuel - sugar and fat - that we can switch between like a hybrid car, explains Dr. Mosley. We store 500g of sugar in our bodies for fuel it lives in our liver and muscles. The average person has 17kg of fat stored in their bodies. Thats true for men and women (women have a higher proportion of body fat) and has been measured by a Dexa body scan.
Flipping the metabolic switch from sugar burning to fat burning is the reason why this low carb, high protein, and relatively high fat 800 calorie intermittent fasting diet is effective. Eating a very low carb diet (a handful of blueberries or strawberries were the only sweet things on the volunteers plates) will run down your stores of sugar after two to three days and cause the body turn to burn fat for fuel instead (more specifically convert fat into ketone bodies for fuel) known as ketosis. Like the volunteers, you can measure if you are in ketosis by peeing on a special colour-changing keto stick.
No not pizza topping but an actual low carb pizza suitable for an 800 calorie day. Dr Mosleys wife GP and recipe creator Dr. Clare Bailey devised a low carb dinner with Portobello mushroom as a base topped with tomato paste, chopped tomatoes, garlic, olive oil mozzarella and fresh basil and grilled. One volunteer declared it delicious.
If you put your mushies outside or on the windowsill for a couple of hours it can boost their vitamin D content up to 100-fold, says Dr. Bailey. Protein is hugely important when losing weight to preserve muscle mass, says Dr. Mosley. Its fat that you want to lose not muscle, especially as muscle tissue burns calories. Some of the volunteers took one of their meals as a meal replacement shake containing 20g protein to ensure they were getting enough.
How much protein does the average person need? Most adults need around 0.75g of protein per kilo of body weight per day (for the average woman, this is 45g, or 55g for men) according to the British Heart Foundation.
Episode Two shone the spotlight on how much to exercise when you're dieting. Michael explains that you'd need to run 35 miles in order to burn off a pound of fat so exercise is not actually a great way to lose weight (as we all know abs are made in the kitchen). However, it is a good way to boost your metabolism especially as half of us are doing less exercise than we were pre-lockdown lives.
So just how much exercise do you need to do a week? "Two and a half hours of moderate exercise a week is recommended is by the NHS or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise," explains Michael.
The older we get the more we lose muscle mass. From age 30, we lose around five per cent of our muscle mass every decade. Unless, that is, we do resistance exercises such as weights or press-ups, anything that pushes against a weight or isometric exercises such as yoga that use your own body weight as resistance.
Resistance exercise is key to maintaining muscle mass and in any weight loss programme maintaining muscle mass is key. Dr Mosley urges his volunteers add this to their weight loss, kicking off with a HIIT training session with his son, working major muscles of the body, 30 seconds on, 30 off.
Our balance declines with age and having good balance is a sign of youthfulness. How long you can stand on one leg with your eyes closed is a good predictor of life expectancy, Dr Mosley explains. If you're 50+ and can stand on one leg for eight seconds you're doing well. In your 40s you should be able to clock up 13 seconds. At 60-plus four seconds is good going.
An irritating side effect of being overweight is snoring and sleep apnoea, a condition where you stop momentarily stop breathing in your sleep, causing you to grunt and splutter (and wake up your bedmate). A staggering 41 per cent of adults snore; it's more common for men and more common as you get older.
Dr Mosley himself was a big snorer, but once he lost weight he became a silent sleeper - much to the relief of his wife Clare. As well as age, weight and genetics, neck size also plays a key part in if you're a snorer; necks over 16 inches for women or over 17 for men mean you're almost certainly a snorer.

Quarantine weight gain may be caused by factors like stress, loneliness, depression, anxiety, decreased physical activity, and disruptions in your daily routine.
Here are a few easy strategies to stay within your target weight range during quarantine. Some of these techniques may even promote weight loss both during and after lockdown.
When it comes to weight loss, what you drink is often just as important as what you eat.
Soda, sweet tea, and sports drinks are typically loaded with added sugar and lack important nutrients like vitamins and minerals. These drinks not only raise your calorie intake but also your risk of weight gain (12).
Contrarily, drinking more water can help you feel full, thereby decreasing your daily calorie intake.
For example, a study in 24 older adults with excess weight and obesity showed that drinking 16.9 ounces (500 mL) of water before breakfast reduced the number of calories eaten at that meal by 13% (13).
While hitting the gym may not yet be an option, plenty of other ways exist to add physical activity to your routine.
Try taking a walk around your neighborhood, doing some bodyweight exercises like pushups, or finding a home workout routine online.
High intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga, aerobics, and Pilates are a few exercises that you can do almost anywhere with minimal or no equipment.
These activities not only burn extra calories to ward off weight gain but also help manage stress and anxiety (14, 15).
Eating healthy is much easier when you have a fridge full of nutritious produce like fresh fruits and veggies.
Conversely, keeping junk foods like chips, cookies, and cakes on hand may increase your risk of overeating.
Next time you go grocery shopping, load your cart with nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. If youre in a supermarket, try to shop around the stores perimeter, which is typically where most of the fresh and healthy foods are located.
Cooking is a great way to improve your diet quality while experimenting with new foods and flavors.
Plus, preparing healthy meals at home puts you in control of what youre putting on your plate, making it easy to incorporate more high quality foods.
A large study in 11,396 people associated eating home-cooked meals more often with better overall diet quality (16).
Whats more, those who ate more than 5 home-cooked meals per week were 28% less likely to have excess weight and 24% less likely to have excess body fat, compared with those who ate home-cooked meals fewer than 3 times per week (16).
While its fine to order from your favorite restaurants on occasion, try finding a few new recipes to prepare at home each week.
When youre not leaving the house often, it can be easy to cast aside your daily routine.
Yet, establishing a schedule and sticking to it is a great way to build healthy habits while creating a sense of normalcy.
Try setting times to wake up and go to sleep, getting dressed even if youre working from home, and taking regular breaks throughout the day.
You can also try planning out your meals for the week and setting aside time for meal prep. Interestingly, studies link meal planning to improved diet quality, increased food variety, and an average body weight (17, 18).
Creating a routine can also ensure that youre able to exercise consistently, which can help promote weight loss (19, 20).
Drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly, stocking up on healthy foods, cooking at home, and sticking to a routine are all useful strategies for weight loss during and after quarantine.
As you adapt to social distancing, its likewise important to adjust the ways that you manage and maintain your health.
While modifying your daily routine may be more difficult due to new challenges brought on by the pandemic, taking a few small steps can set you on the track toward better long-term health.
If you have more free time, quarantine may lend you the opportunity to learn more about nutrition and healthy eating but jumping into a fad diet or restrictive eating plan isnt recommended.
Instead, making gradual changes to your diet and lifestyle is much more effective for promoting long-term health and sustainable weight loss (21).
Keep in mind that theres no need to cut out your favorite foods altogether, even if youre trying to lose weight. While its best not to load up on unhealthy snacks and treats, you can still enjoy these foods in moderation as part of a nutritious, well-rounded diet.
