Woman loses 151 pounds with exercise and Weight Watchers – TODAY
Lindy Cellucci, 60, remembers the exact moment she decided it was time to do something about her weight. It was 2014, and the Toronto native and three of her friends took a girls trip to Canadas east coast.
I was having a hard time keeping up with them, she told TODAY. We were doing a lot of walking and I was finding it harder each day. I had dizzy spells, and I was afraid something might happen to me.
Their trip included a stop at Hopewell Rocks, a natural formation where you can walk on the ocean floor when the tide goes out, surrounded by sandstone structures that look like flowerpots. One thing I really wanted to do was go to the Rocks. It was on my bucket list, she said.
But it was a hot day, and reaching the ocean floor meant a steep walk down and back up. I just knew I couldnt do it, she said.
Her friends felt terrible, but Cellucci encouraged them to go on without her. I watched them go. I could see them way, way down, running around on the ocean floor, taking selfies, laughing and joking. I was up top with the great-grandmothers. I thought, This is stupid. Youre missing out, she said.
I said out loud, Its time. Im stopping everything right now and Im going to fix this.
Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.
And she did. With five days left in her vacation, she stopped eating junk food and started making healthier food choices.
When she got home she stepped on the scale for the first time in years. The scale only went to 300, she said. I had no idea my weight was starting with a 3. It was mortifying.
She joined Weight Watchers (now WW) and followed its healthy eating plan. Right away I started to lose some weight and feel better, she said.
This was the first time in all the weight-loss programs I tried where I realized it was not just a quick fix this was going to be forever. I wasnt starving myself or eating just bananas or just potatoes. I was cooking wonderful food and creating wonderful recipes that were healthy and delicious, she said.
To avoid temptation, she keeps trigger foods out of her house. Im a food addict. That hasnt changed, she said. I can say no once in the store, or 400 times in the house.
Exercise was a challenge. Because I was a very big woman it was hard to start exercising. I didnt do that for about three months, she said. For Christmas, her sister bought her a Fitbit and she started walking one block, which was about 1,000 steps. My back would hurt and my knees would hurt, she said. But she enjoyed competing with other Fitbit users. I liked the feeling of getting ahead, she said.
As the weight came off, I could add an extra lap, and more weight came off, she said. I kept walking, and I started to go to yoga, Zumba, boot camp and swimming. I was feeling so stoked. She worked her way up to 25,000 to 30,000 steps a day and was halfway to her goal weight by the end of 2015.
Cellucci hit a serious stumbling block breast cancer. In December 2015 after a cold walk, she tucked her hands up under her arms to warm them. And she felt a lump. From then, everything happened quickly ultrasound, mammogram, biopsy and surgery. She needed months of chemotherapy and radiation and medication through a port in her chest.
The worst part of having breast cancer was not losing my hair, not feeling physically ill, not being afraid to die. The worst part for me was I put every last pound back on.
The steroids she had to take led to weight gain, and chemotherapy made most foods taste lousy, so she said she lived on fried foods and salt. The worst part of having breast cancer was not losing my hair, not feeling physically ill, not being afraid to die. The worst part for me was I put every last pound back on, she said.
Cellucci still wore her Fitbit, and she rejoined WW around the time of her second all-clear mammogram. Slowly, the pounds came off again. After 20 months of losing pretty much every single week, in September 2019 I reached my goal I lost half of me, she said. I look better at 60 than I did at 40. She now weighs 149 pounds and has gone from a size 22 to a size 9.
She was even featured on the cover of People magazines Half Their Size issue. For a whole week I hung out at the grocery store where the magazine was on the rack telling strangers, Thats me! she said.
And as for her trip to Hopewell Rocks? Shes planning a visit once the pandemic eases. As soon as I can travel, Im going to run up and down those stairs, she said.

How Healthy Are You? The Truth About BMI, Body Fat, and Diet – The Beet
The scale isnt your only tool in determining how fit and healthy you are. Other measurements, like body fat percentage, waist circumference, and BMI tell as much or more aboutyour overall health and fitness picture as the number on the scale. Heres the best news: All of these can be improved on a plant-based diet.
If youve ever tried to lose weight, you know how obsessed with the scale you can become. Yet while knowing your weight can be a useful tool, it only gives you a fraction of the story. Other measures like body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, both of which are tied to body fat, play into this as well. Heres the scoop on what each of these measurements indicate, how you can check them at home, and why you should eat even more plants to improve all of them.
How many times have you heard people refer to fat as a four-letter word? Maybe youve even said the same. Heres the catch: When people say this, theyre usually referring to the pinch an inch type of fat, essentially the kind that sits right under your skin. Yet subcutaneous (or surface) fat isnt the big issue. Instead, you need to direct your attention to two other types of fat in your body, namely visceral and intramyocellular fats which sit deeper and cause more harm.
While intramyocellular fat are essentially fat droplets stored in muscle cells, visceral fat is the fat in your belly, around your waist and around your organs, and both lead to poor health. Increase in intramyocellular fat leads to insulin resistance that can cause a myriad of problems, diabetes included, says Kim Scheuer, M.D., plant-based lifestyle medicine physician and founder of DOKS Lifestyle Medicine in Aspen, Colo. Meanwhile, visceral fat is even more indicative of disease, as it causes inflammation in the body which is paramount to heart disease and many other chronic diseases.
So how can you check your body fat? There are several ways, including the gold standard of hydrostatic weighing where youre dunked underwater while holding your breath, DXA which is similar to bone testing, and skinfold calipers that pinch the fat you can squeeze. Yet there are drawbacks to each. The first two require special equipment while the calipers check only subcutaneous fat and arent that accurate, Scheuer says.
Fortunately, there are ways you can keep tabs on your body fat at home, and the first is BMI. While BMI has come under fire as less than ideal as a way to gauge the population, many experts still consider it a useful tool. BMI is an excellent indicator, as its practical and easy to determine, and it reliably correlates with the percentage of body fat and body fat mass, says Charles Elder, M.D., internal medicine physician in Portland, Ore.
To determine your BMI, divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters) squared. If you know both, you canuse a BMI calculator to do thematch for you. In general, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 orhigher is considered obese, Scheuer says.
Yet because BMI may overestimate the degree of body fat in people who are technically overweight but have a lot of muscle mass, such as athletesor bodybuilders, you should also measure waist circumference. Increased waist circumference, which assesses abdominal obesity, has been shown to be a predictor of cardiovascular complications and provides useful additional information beyond just BMI, Elder says. Measure this at home by placing a measuring tape around your middle, just above your hipbones. If you're a man and have a waist circumference of 40 inches or youre a womanand have a waist measures of 35 inches or more, youre considered at risk of having heart disease and other issues, Scheuer says.
When it comes to maintaining a leaner physique, plant-based eaters typically have always had the leg up in this department. Numerous studies suggest that plant-eaters have lower BMI than their meat-eating counterparts, including a smaller waist circumference, and lower body fat. The studies also indicate that a strategy to lose weight is to adopt a plant-based diet.
Whats the magic? Simple: The more whole-food, plant-based you eat, the more nutrient-dense ... your diet will be, so that youll lose more fat and weight overall, Scheuer says. Eat a low-fat diet, and youll do even better. She quotes John A. McDougall, M.D., founder of the McDougall Program and Dr. McDougalls Right Foods, whos famous for saying that the fat you eat is the fat you wear.Thats because while fat has nine calories per gram, whereas carbohydrates and proteins have just four calories per gram. As a result, plant-based foods, most of which are low in fat, are much less calorie-dense than meat, cheese, and other animal products. Yet because the meat and dairy both lack fiber, these calorie-dense foods are easy to eat faster and thus lead you to overeat, Scheuer says.
Plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains also have other ways in which they aid your physique. Theyre rich in water and fiber, both of which fill you up, and they feed good gut bacteria, which improves satiety and helps boost metabolism, Scheuer says.
And while most animal foods consist of long-chain fatty acids, which promote fat accumulation and insulin resistance in the body (which signals your body to store fat to be used later), plants have higher levels of short-chain fatty acids, which help your body burn fat for fuel. Short-chain fatty acids help increase fat burning for energy and are associated with many other health benefits, Elder says.
Want to improve BMI, waist circumference and carry around less body fat? Make sure youre loading yourplatewith as many plants as possible, knowing that going 100 percent plant-based is healthiest for you, as well as the planet, andfactory-farmed animals, Scheuer says. Its not just what you eat but when you eat, that matters. Because your digestion is naturally strongest in the middle of the day at around noon when the sun is highest in the sky, have your main meal at mid-day with a lighter dinner and no snacking at night, Elder says.
And dont forget that other lifestyle habits are important too, including exercising daily for 30 minutes or more, reducing stress by enjoying time doing what brings you joy, and logging sevenor more hours of sleep at night. Another strategy that works to lower BMI, fat and overall weight: Try limiting the hours you eat (Scheuer recommends stopping eating at 7 p.m.), and drinking plenty of water. Shoot for two glasses of cold water before breakfast, lunch and dinner, she adds. Then know that you've done everything you can to be your fittest, healthiest self.

Weight loss: Burn hundreds of extra calories a day by swapping water for green tea – Express
Weight loss is a long process and for those wanting to see results a bit quicker, including losing weight around the stomach, incorporating green tea into your diet can boost the results. Green tea has been associated with weight loss for several years due to the compounds found in the tea. It can also help make the bodys metabolism more efficient which means burning more calories throughout the day and during moderate exercise.
Green tea is packed with antioxidants and a common one is known as catechin flavonoid. This is the compound that can help boost your metabolism when the drink is consumed daily.
Those with a slow metabolism tend to have more leftover calories, which get stored as fat and those with a faster metabolism are less likely to accumulate a lot of fat because it gets burned quicker.
Other compounds found in the tea can increase the level of hormones that tell fat cells to break down fat. This releases fat into the bloodstream and makes it available to use as energy.
It also contains a small amount of caffeine which is a well known stimulant that has been found to aid fat burning and improve exercise performance.

In one study, men who drank a cup of green tea before exercise burned 17 percent more fat than men who didnt.
Another weight loss benefit that green tea can provide is suppressing appetite.
This can then help you to consume fewer calories throughout the day which means you will be in a calorie deficit, a state your body needs to be in to be able to lose any amount of weight.
A calorie deficit is when your body is burning more calories than it is consuming and consuming a couple of cups of green tea daily can help your body to burn more calories as well as helping you to eat less food.

The beverage is said to be one of the worlds healthiest drinks and it contains a very small amount of calories which means those who are following a diet can consume the drink without having to worry about their calorie intake.
Drinking too much tea however can do more harm to your body than good so it is recommended to consume around two to three cups a day and no more.
It can be consumed in many different ways including hot, cold, in a powdered form and some slimmers even prefer adding a little bit of milk to disguise the strong taste that green tea has.
So when can you drink green tea to see quick weight loss results?
Some experts suggest drinking a cup in the morning to help kickstart your metabolism for the day. It can also aid your body by providing it with essential vitamins and nutrients that can help concentration levels.
However some research suggests that consuming a cup of green tea before exercise is the best time because it can help your body burn more fat, including harmful belly fat.
If burning belly fat is your goal, matcha green tea can help shed the extra pounds.
Matcha green tea is the purest form of green tea and is made by grinding tea leaves into a powder.
It can then be made by whisking it into hot water and serving with or without milk.
Matcha can also be added to foods to disguise the taste and you can add it to baked goods, smoothies as well as mixing it in with porridge or granola.
Known widely as a superfood, the power contains a lot less caffeine than a cup of coffee but can provide your body with an energy boost to keep you going throughout the day.
The bright green beverage is also part of the Sirtfood diet which helped singer Adele lose weight.

New Onset Diabetes and Weight Loss Associated with Pancreatic Cancer Risk – DocWire News
A new study observed a correlation between newly diagnosed diabetes and recent weight loss and an increased likelihood of pancreatic cancer.
Despite pancreatic cancers status as the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, there is a scarcity of research on high-risk groups; such data could help would be helpful in achieving early diagnoses, according to the authors of the present study.
The researchers identified data from the Nurses Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study; repeated exposure assessments were performed over 30 years. Pancreatic cancer cases were either self-reported or discovered during follow-up of participant deaths, which were determined through next of kin reports, the US postal service, or the National Death Index. Exposures were the duration of diagnosed diabetes and recent weight change; the main outcome was the hazard ratio (HR) of developing pancreatic cancer.
Final analysis included 112,818 women (mean age, 59.4 years) and 46,207 men (mean age, 64.7 years); 1,116 total pancreatic cancer incidents were identified. When adjusting for age, patients with recent-onset diabetes, compared to nondiabetic patients, were more likely to have pancreatic cancer (HR=2.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.31 to 3.82), as were long-standing diabetics (HR=2.16; 95% CI, 1.78 to 2.60). Compared to patients who did not lose weight, in age-adjusted analyses, the risk of pancreatic cancer was greater among patients with a weight loss of 1 to 4 pounds (HR=1.25; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.52), 5 to 8 pounds (HR=1.33; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.66), and more than 8 pounds (HR=1.92; 95% CI, 1.58 to 2.32). Pancreatic cancer risk was significantly higher among recent-onset diabetes patients reporting a weight loss between 1 and 8 pounds (91 incident cases per 100,000 person years; 95% CI, 55 to 151; HR=3.61; 95% CI, 2.14 to 6.10) or more than 8 pounds (164 incident cases per 100,000 person-years; 95% CI, 114 to 238; HR=6.75; 95% CI, 4.55 to 10.00) compared to non-diabetic patients with no recent weight loss (16 cases per 100,000 person-years; 95% CI, 14 to 17). Pancreatic cancer incidence was greatest among recent-onset diabetes patients with weight loss whose body mass index was <25 kg/m2 before weight loss (400 incident cases per 100,000 person-years) or whose weight loss was unintentional based on increased physical activity or healthier dietary choices (334 incident cases per 100,000 person-years).
The study was published in JAMA Oncology.
This study demonstrates that recent-onset diabetes accompanied by weight loss is associated with a substantially increased risk for developing pancreatic cancer. Older age, previous healthy weight, and no intentional weight loss further elevate this risk, the authors concluded.

Weight loss tips: Do not compare yourself with other and set your own goals
Weight loss: To exercise regularly, or to even begin with exercising requires a great deal of determination, motivation and discipline. It is because of these reasons that people find it challenging to inculcate exercising in their daily routine. Well, firstly know that you are not alone. Celeb fitness trainer Kayla Itsines mentions how one may feel scared, nervous or intimidated even when they think about training."You might have the motivation to start training, but then there are so many things that can get in your way. If this is you, I do not want you to feel alone. I speak to so many women who feel the same way as you," she writes in the caption of her recent Insta post.
Itsines goes on to share a few tips that can help beginners know how to start exercising and from where to begin with:
Begin with a light cardio routine following 2-3 weight training exercises. Or, if you are not comfortable, do only one at a time. According to Itsines, one can feel a sense of accomplishment and empowerment by doing just one workout. And this, can motivate you to do the next workout in the following day. "Once you know you can complete that workout, that feeling of intimidation will disappear," she adds.

Four PA women’s weight loss journeys inspire others to "Murder the Scale" – WPVI-TV
BRISTOL, Pa. -- Four lovely women in their forties are teaming up against a common threat: their weight scales.
The colorful cast of lifelong friends have lost hundreds of pounds combined over the last decade. But the COVID-19 pandemic served as a wakeup call for quarantine calories creeping up.
"There's days when I don't feel like getting up. There's days when I don't want to work out," said Siretta "Ree" Lockett, one of the founding members. "But when you're held accountable, and you got three other people in your ear saying you can do this, you got this, it's just amazing."
The pound-killing teammates have been friends since their childhoods. Growing up and experiencing similar struggles, they always find a way back to each other.
"Although we live close together, we kind of live our own separate lives," said Kwesi "Kay" Hutchings-Williams. "But when we come together, and we see each other, and know that we're coming for a certain goal, we're all uplifted."
That camaraderie electrifies their work-out atmosphere, no matter the place, time, or weather. They often live stream their workouts to Facebook and demonstrate a low-impact version of their routines so group members can participate from home.
Lorriana "Lou" Dix was 330 pounds in 2009. Like some of her friends, she received a surgical procedure to dramatically cut her weight.
"All that resistance and stuff that you come against, you have to push past it," Lou said, referring to the temptation of her delicious cooking skills. In the last 11 years, she has cut her weight by 82 pounds.
Deisha "Dee" Moore emphasizes the importance of healthy choices, both physically and mentally.
"You look good, you feel good. You feel good, you look good," said Dee.

Angel Mapes' boyfriend
A womans TikTok on her diet has gone viral for the very reaction her boyfriend gave as she described what shes been doing to lose weight.
On August 4, Angel Mapes, of St. Petersburg, Fla., shared a video in which she jokingly told her followers about her weight loss routine.
Its been about a month now, Mapes says in the clip. I have changed my eating habits. I have cut out carbs completely. Yes, that includes alcohol. I have not had alcohol in a month.
At that point, Mapes boyfriend, who is unaware that he is being recorded, looks at the camera seemingly shocked and motions toward the glass of wine that is sitting in clear view.
Its tough, but I know its worth it, Mapes continues. Its just not eating though. Ive been waking up early I dont eat sugar at all, no candy, no popcorn, nothing at all.
The Florida woman then proceeds to talk about her workout regimen.
Walk as much as possible, Mapes say, as her boyfriend sips his water. I look at my phone everyday and I try to get between 8,000 and 10,000 steps a day.
At that moment, Mapes boyfriend spits out his water and apologizes for doing so, knowing completely well that Mapes is lying. In a text overlay, Mapes writes, I got a 1000 steps yesterday. and he knows that.
Towards the end of the clip, the womans boyfriend gets up to clean up his mess but not before he jokingly mocks Mapes.
Since the video was shared, it has received over 1.7 million likes and more than 21,500 comments.
So cute how he tried not to interrupt even though he knew you were lying! one person wrote.
When he spit out his drink I lost it, another wrote.
Mapes prank follows a trend in which TikTok users have filmed videos pretending to be influencers when, in fact, theyre actually recording the reactions of those watching them. An 18-year-old from South Africa similarly went viral for discussing her fake fitness regimen.
