The Heart Attack that Saved his Life – Morning Chalk Up

The Heart Attack that Saved his Life | Morning Chalk Up

In 2016, unbeknownst to him, Al Sagapolutele had a heart attack.

He didnt find out until later why he had been feeling uncharacteristically out of breath and as if he was rocking back and forth on a boat for the last week.

While Sagapolutele was surprised to find out about his silent heart attack, another part of him wasnt surprised it had happened. He weighed 460 pounds at six-foot-three at the time and wasnt exactly the picture of health.

But Sagapolutele just never took his doctor that seriously until the heart attack, which left him feeling embarrassed and ashamed.

He added: I realized then that my life was completely out of control. Even before the heart attack, I would call in sick to work on Mondays because I had been drunk the night before. I knew I needed to make a change.

First, Sagapolutele met with a gastric bypass surgeon and considered the surgical route, but something stopped him from going through with it.

Instead, he started to eat better and lost some weight on his own, but he still had a long way to go, and he knew he needed help. Thats when he reached out to Dorian Shockey at CrossFit Resurgens in Atlanta, Ga.

He connected with his coach, and he also quickly connected with the community around him.

Sagapolutele added: I recognized this community being something I needed. It really was amazing. When you come from a world where youre desperate and nothing has worked, to an actual community where people quickly embrace you and want you to succeed. It made all the difference.

The support he received not only helped him continue to go to the gym and gain fitness, but it was also the encouragement he needed to change his diet. He stopped eating things like rice and bread and processed food and adopted a Paleo-type diet. And he stopped drinking alcohol as a way to cope with his emotions.

Today, Sagapolutele is down to 240 pounds, a weight he has maintained since the end of 2018. He feels much healthier, his blood pressure has returned to normal and he no longer needs medication, and he even seems to have resolved his sleep apnea.

In April 2017, Sagapolutele moved to Bloomington, MN and had to leave his community in Atlanta at CrossFit Resurgens. But he has embraced a new community at CrossFit 952.

Today, Sagapolutele trains with Coach Pat Tait at CrossFit 952, and more recently, he has become a part-time coach there. And just like in Atlanta, his coach and the broader community at CrossFit 952 have become invaluable to his journey.

This is why he wants to tell his story: So others can get the help they need, like he has through CrossFit.

He added: I remember when I was really heavy and I would watch videos of success stories, and I would think, Man, I wish I had that motivation or that guys mental toughness. But it wasnt about that. It was about the support. And its kind of weird being in this position today, but Im so thankful Im here. And if my story can help someone start their own journey, then I welcome that.

Nutritionist Praises Kelly Osbourne’s Plant-Based Diet That Helped Her Lose 85lb – Plant Based News

Kelly Osbourne said she used to overeat when she was emotionally upset

A nutritionist has praised Kelly Osbourne's plant-based diet, after the star revealed it helped her lose a staggering 65lb.

Osbourne shared her weight loss news on Instagram earlier this week, making mainstream media headlines.

According to the Daily Mirror, the star has credited her plant-based diet with helping her lose weight and improve her relationship with food.

Osbourne once said she put pounds on after overcoming her drug addiction, saying: "I replaced the drugs with food and just got fatter and fatter. I'm an emotional eater. When I get upset, my diet goes out the window."

It was changing her lifestyle that helped her tackle her weight, she admitted, telling HuffPost: "Once I learned how to work out right and eat right, it's one of those things that you just have to commit to a life change rather than being on a diet."

Now a nutritionist has praised plant-based diets in a Marie Claire article titled Kelly Osbourne lost six stone by going vegan: three nutritionists share if the diet is good for weight loss.

Nutritionist Lauren Windas said plant-based diets 'can be beneficial for weight loss if meals often include more of an abundance of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds' and legumes, which are relatively low in calories and can support metabolic health.

Marie Claire added: "Emphasis here on the if, but if you do adopt a well-balanced vegan lifestyle packed with nutrient-dense foods and maintain a calorie deficit in doing so, the likelihood is you'll lose weight. Plus, you'll be nourishing your body while doing so. Win, win."

She added that because plant-based diets tend to be higher in fiber, people following them often feel 'fuller and more energized'.

"This could lead to reduced calorie consumption and potentially less snacking between meals, which could in turn result in weight loss," she said.

Not all the nutritionists were totally positive, with some criticisms of plant-based diets including that people should plan to ensure they aren't becoming nutrient deficient in B12 and iron (just as those following omnivorous diets should).

Irrespective of reporting, it's important to note that major nutritional bodies, including the British and American Dietetic Associations, say that plant-based diets can be suitable for all stages of life.

"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases," the American Dietetic Association says.

"Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes."

This Diet Removes Toxic Chemicals from Your Body in Less Than a Week, Study Finds – MSN Money

Provided by Eat This, Not That! organic vegetables

In theory, eating organic food is something most of us would choose to do if given the chance. Organic products contain fewer traces of pesticides, they're better for the environment, and they're usually packed with more nutrients.

But skeptics note that buying organic comes at a much higher cost, and whether or not the benefits of eating organic actually outweigh the hefty grocery bill has been a point of debate for years.

Now, a new study is providing evidence of the benefits of organic eating that may convert the skeptics. Researchers from the environmental organization Friends of the Earth found that eating an organic diet for as little as six days can significantly reduce the amount of pesticide traces in the human body.

The peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Research found that people who ate an exclusively organic diet for six days had a 70% reduction in levels of glyphosate in the body. Glyphosate is a widely-used pesticide in the United States, and while the science about its long-term effects on the human body is still inconclusive, there have been several studies linking it to cancer. In fact, the FDA categorized the weed-killer as "probably carcinogenic to humans" in 2015.

The new study followed four families in different parts of the United States, and measured their levels of glyphosate while they were on their regular non-organic diet, followed by six days of eating an exclusively organic diet. The dramatic reduction in traceable pesticide in their systems has researchers optimistic about the rapid, measurable benefits of an organic diet.

"It's striking that levels of this toxic pesticide dropped so dramatically after less than a week. Given our results and related studies on how an organic diet rapidly reduces pesticide exposure, we could expect to see similar reductions in glyphosate levels in most Americans if they switched to an organic diet," said study co-author Kendra Klein, PhD, senior staff scientist at Friends of the Earth.

In America, the consumption of organic products is on a steady rise. Since 2010, the sales of organic foods has doubled, going from 3.4% of total food sales in the U.S. to 5.6% in 2019.

While almost half of Americans report purchasing organic food at least some of the time, for most, switching to an all-organic diet is still out of reach. And that's because on average, organic food costs about 7.5% more than its non-organic counterpart. To find out more about the benefits and costs of eating an organic diet, read our RD's opinion.

All About The Why | News, Sports, Jobs – timesobserver.com

Its probably fair to say that a multiple sclerosis diagnosis isnt a blessing to too many people.

But for Heather Cristea, it was.

Just ask her.

MS was one of the heaviest weights that has ever been put on my (it) was a battle I didnt think I was going to beat, she said. When I was knocked down so far, it wound up being one of the biggest blessings I ever had.

It really showed me what mattered in life. It makes you reconsider what youre doing.

Times Observer photo by Josh CottonHeather Cristea works out at the Youngsville branch of the YMCA. Her fitness journey, which included an MS diagnosis, has resulted in lost weight, but also the ability to keep up with her kids.

It started with floaters in her left eye in 2017 but the eye doctor found nothing wrong and sent her to the ER. After a series of tests and a hospital transfer, she got the diagnosis.

Things continued to get worse, she said. I couldnt get up the stairs or get out of bed.

During this period she also found out that she was pregnant.

So, here I am pregnant with hormones racing, terrified and being pumped with steroids, she said. The steroids I had proceeded to send me on a ride of terrible mental health and I went insane. I was in a psych ward for almost a month.

But the MS was still flaring and a repeat steroid treatment wasnt the answer.

Im gaining weight at an alarming rate and not just from the pregnancy, she recalled. My MS went into remission. To this day, I give credit to me beautiful Arbor Brycelynn.

With a healthy daughter, thats when it hit her how much weight she had gained.

Once I started thinking clearly again, I looked in the mirror and didnt recognize myself.

That sent her into what she described as a spiraling depression on top of baby blues.

A year later, it was the concern of her husband that would ultimately prompt a massive life change.

My husband told me he was worried about my health, she said.

She said he told her he wanted her to live a long time.

When my husband told me that, I started trying to lose weight with just my body. I needed to go to therapy to get in the right mindset first and I didnt realize that.

So she started eating better, cutting coffee consumption and going to the YMCA.

To be honest, when I started, I wasnt thrilled and optimistic, she said. Cutting back coffee to one day a week, eating better and drinking less beer was absolutely not thrilling. Until I started losing weight. Then a light bulb went off.

That light bulb has turned into 130 pounds lost.

I can chase my kids around and keep up with them, she said. Not carrying around the weight of an extra person has also helped me tremendously when my MS flares.

My answer to that isnt how, its why, she said. Thats it. Its why. If you dont have a big enough why, guess what? Youre going to have why nots. (You are) going to keep coming up with excuses not to get it done. (You) gotta have a good reason.

Now, shes looking to share the hope and joy that shes experienced with others.

I want to get an MS fundraiser going in this area. I think thats important, she said. There are quite a few people around her that have MS. I want to bring awareness to that.

Shes also going to be involved in a YMCA Goal Crushers Facebook page designed to provide support and encouragement along the way.

I had people pushing me and motivating me, she said. I want the community to get together and help each other out.

The #1 Thing To Eat Every Day To Lose Weight For Good – MSN Money

Shutterstock Woman eating oatmeal breakfast fresh fruit

Are you tired of trying diet after diet and never seeing results? That's probably because your eating plan isn't leaving you satisfied long term, and likely because you aren't getting enough fiber on a daily basis. Fiber actually plays a significant role in weight management for people long term, and yet, people still aren't getting enough of it.

According to the USDA, adults are recommended to get at least 25 (for women) to 38 (for men) grams of fiber a day. Yet while this sounds small, it's not nearly as small compared to what the average American typically gets now, which is only 10 to 15 grams a day.

Ten grams may not seem like much, but when looking at how decreasing proper fiber intake will affect the body over time, the results are pretty severe. Not just in terms of gaining weight and obesity, but it's even linked to a myriad of autoimmune diseases.

In order to better understand fiber, we did the research and spoke with two professionals on what fiber does to the body, including the major repercussions that take place when a person doesn't get enough of it.

Fiber is actually indigestibleit goes right through your system. Fiber is part of the carbohydrate found in plant cell walls, which is why common items that come from plants have it like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, avocados, leafy greens, and more.

"There are two types, soluble and insoluble," says Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD. "Soluble fiber is the type that can help your heart health by helping lower total and bad cholesterol. Insoluble fiber aids in gastrointestinal health, acting like a 'broom' to help push stuff through."

Because of the way it moves through your body, it actually revs up your metabolism and helps you to feel full for longer periods of time.

"When you digest food, your body expends calories," says Tanya Zuckerbrot MS, RD, and founder of the F Factor Diet. "Fiber is indigestible, fiber has no calories, but your body attempts to break it down, So in that attempt, your body tries to break it down, and we call this thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is anything that increases your body's internal temperature which ultimately impacts your metabolism. So the more fiber you eat, the faster your metabolism gets."

Not only that, but fiber can actually attach itself to toxins in the bodyas well as the calories and fat cells that you take inand flush them out.

"Fiber acts like a sponge in your stomach, and in your intestines," says Zuckerbrot. "It combines with cholesterol and estrogen and toxins and ushers them out of the body. In addition to all of those things, fiber can actually combine with fat and calories. When you eat fiber with foods with calories and fat, the fiber binds up with a percent of those calories and fat and ushers them out of the body. So rather than 100% of those calories and fat entering into your bloodstream where they can ultimately land at your thighs and your hips and your belly, a percent of those calories can combine with the fiberwhich can not be digested because it gets evacuatedand those calories and grams of fat end up in the toilet bowl."

Because of this process, studies show that getting a sufficient amount of dietary fiber can significantly reduce the risk of weight gain. Because the body feels full from the fiber, people are less likely to overeat in the long run, creating a caloric deficit over time.

"For weight loss, fiber is helpful because it helps you get full faster and stay full longer," says Goodson. "This can help people take in fewer calories at meals and ideally stay satisfied for a longer period of time before they go looking for something else to eat."

Here'sWhat Happens When You Don't Eat Enough Fiber.

Not only does fiber help with weight management, but it plays a significant role in reducing inflammation in the body and the risk of autoimmune diseases.

According to Zuckerbrot, it all starts with your microbiome. Without fiber, the gut wall lining in the microbiome starts to thin. The bacteria that gets close to your gut wall will enter your bloodstream, which produces cytokine. Cytokine causes inflammation and according to studies, it is linked to all kinds of autoimmune diseases including psoriasis, alopecia, Crohn's, colitis, Parkinson's, MS, obesity, certain forms of cancer, and more.

"The roll that fiber plays in gut health is fascinating," says Zuckerbrot. "You can repopulate your microbiome with a high fiber diet, that's why you hear so much about prebiotics and probiotics."

Your microbiome has microflora, which is a collective bacteria that helps you to digest food.

"Think of the microflora as little PAC-MEN," says Zuckerbrot. "When the fiber passes, they chomp on it, and then they can repopulate. And then that repopulation, that's when the gut wall thickens, and that's what you want."

Zuckerbrot quickly mentions the Hazda tribe, an African tribe that has been heavily researched in the past because of their diet, which consists of 100 to 150 grams of fiber a day. In one study on their feces, researchers found a healthy variety of microbes compared to those who eat a typical Western diet.

Here's The Best Way to Eat for Your Microbiome and Improve Gut Health.

Make simple swaps. Eating a high-fiber diet doesn't require you to diet it all, it just means you can make a few simple swaps in order to get your daily recommended intake. "I would say swapping a cup of watermelon to a cup of raspberries. You know a cup of watermelon is 1 gram and a cup of raspberries is 8. Switch from lettuce to kale, that takes you from 1 gram to 3 grams. Switch from [one slice of] white bread to whole wheat bread, so that takes you from 1 gram to 5 grams. Switch from Special K or cornflakes to All-Bran, that's 13 grams," says Zuckerbrot. Check out our list of high-fiber foods for some assistance.

Strive for 5 grams of fiber per meal, or more. Goodson says that if you try to incorporate at least 4 to 5 grams off fiber in all of your meals and snacks, you'll get close to what you need. "Focus on eating 100% whole grains, vegetables, fruits where you can eat the skin, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds can help ensure you are getting enough! Incorporating a variety of those foods into all your meals and snacks can add variety and fiber," says Goodson.

Ease it in slowly. You'll likely experience some gas at first, but as Zuckerbrot says "this too shall pass." She points out that her stomach is flat and not gassy even after eating 60 to 80 grams of fiber a day, and says that it will pass. "I would say introduce fiber slowly, 10 grams. Then work your way up to 20 grams and then 30," she says.

Water is essential. "It is so important when adding fiber to your diet is to up your fluid intake. To eat a lot of fiber without proper hydration, the fiber can harden," says Zuckerbot. "So you want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water. I recommend for every 10 grams of fiber [to drink] 1 liter of water. So if you're getting 30 grams of fiber, it should be 3 literswhich equals about 12 cups of water a day."

Weight loss: The simple daily habit that will help you snack less and lose weight – Express

A healthy diet should include plenty of protein, good fats and carbs in order to help you feel energised throughout the day.

Eating plenty of fibre via vegetables and fruit will also help you to feel fuller for longer, as will protein.

But while its important to make the right choices for what goes onto your plate, there could be another element thats missing from your diet.

Your body is made up of two-thirds water, and hydration plays a key role in helping your body function at its best, explained Dr. Naomi Newman-Beinart, nutritionist and specialist in health psychology.

READ MORE:Colson Smith weight loss: Corrie star's 10 stone weight loss wows fans

It can sometimes be tricky to know the difference between feelings of hunger and thirst, Dr Naomi warned.

If you are often hungry and find that you are overeating, you may not be aware that you are actually dehydrated.

It sounds simple, but studies have shown that staying hydrated can make a difference to the number of calories you eat each day.

Researchers in America found that women who drank a glass of water before meals consumed between 75-90 calories fewer from their meal, and were more likely to lose weight than those who did not drink water before meals, Dr Naomi said.

Overeating is one of the primary causes of obesity, with research showing that Britons eat as much as 1,000 more calories a day than the recommended daily intake.

Its suggested that women should consume 2,000 calories a day, while men can have slightly more at 2,500.

But to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit - by burning off more calories than you eat.

Drinking water is therefore essential - not only as it can affect appetite, but because its calorie-free - meaning you wont be adding extra calories without realising by staying hydrated.

Dr Naomi recommended setting a reminder on your phone if youre not a big drinker - in the healthy sense - so that you sip enough throughout the day.

But if water doesnt spark your fancy, you can stay hydrated and reap the weight loss benefits in other ways.

Vegetables and fruits such as cucumber, watermelon and carrots are delicious when made into a fresh juice, and also really good to boost your vitamin and mineral intake, advised Dr Naomi.

Fruits and vegetables also contain water, so consuming them fresh or whole will up your hydration.

Alternatively, you can add slices of lemon, orange or lime to a glass of water to give it a twist.

Sirtfood Diet: How This Diet Can Help You Lose Weight in Three Weeks – News18

A diet that allows you to indulge in red wine and dark chocolate would grab your attention immediately, right? Well, thats precisely what the sirtfood diet does, and still promises to help you burn fat and lose weight. This is also the diet that Grammy-winning singer Adele reportedly used to lose weight recently, and it has become globally popular ever since. Heres everything you need to know about this trendy new diet.

What are sirtfoods?

As a study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity in 2013 explains, sirtfoods are basically sirtuin-activating foods. Sirtuins are proteins that regulate metabolic function, inflammation and lifespan, and certain foods have the capacity to increase their levels in the body.

Although some research about sirtfoods can be found before 2016, it was in this year that the sirtfood diet was popularised by two British health consultants, Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten. What the sirtfood diet essentially does is combine the consumption of sirtfoods with calorie restriction, beginning with a three-week period.

How the diet works

Some of the most easily available and popular sirtfoods are kale, red wine, strawberries, onion, soy, parsley, extra virgin olive oil, dark chocolate, matcha green tea, buckwheat, turmeric, walnuts, mejdool dates, capers and coffee. According to Goggins and Mattens plan, the diet itself is divided into two phases.

Phase 1: Restrict your diet to 1,000 calories from one meal of sirtfoods and three green juices for the first three days. During the rest of week one, consume two green juices and two sirtfood meals per day.

Phase 2: During the next two weeks, one green juice and three sirtfood meals make up the daily meal plan.

If youre wondering what a green juice is, its a blend of kale, arugula, green apple, celery, matcha green tea, parsley, ginger and lemon.

The idea after this jumpstart period is to continue with a diet made of sirtfoods for as long as possible. The creators of this diet insist that following it precisely activates the skinny gene and leads to quick weight loss while also maintaining muscle mass and protecting you from chronic diseases.

Is this diet effective?

Despite these claims, the fact is that very little research is available on sirtfoods currently to back the claims. The afore-mentioned study, for example, lists all the benefits of including sirtfoods in your diet - including the fact that these foods are packed with bioactive compounds, polyphenols and phytochemicals. It also explains how calorie restriction combined with sirtfood consumption can help prevent obesity, chronic diseases and early-onset ageing.

However, there is no data yet to prove that the sirtfood diet is any better than other calorie-restrictive diets, or even a lifespan-increasing diet like the Blue Zones diet.
