Understanding Intricate Relationship Between Low-carb Diet and Weight – The Weather Channel
Representational image
Thinking weight loss usually means cutting carbohydrates - whether that's sugar or bread - out of your diet; the first option most people turn to.
Priya Palan, dietician at Zen Multispeciality Hospital Chembur, says carbohydrates are one of the important macronutrients from which the body obtains energy. What is most important is the type of carbohydrate we choose to eat.
"Each coin has two sides, so is it that not all carbs are created equal. Complex or whole carbohydrates are healthier choices and considered good as they are unprocessed, contain micronutrients and fiber that are naturally present in food. Examples: vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts. Simple carbohydrates are refined, lacking in essential nutrients and has no fiber, thus are not considered as a healthy choice always. Examples simple sugars, fruit juices, sugary drinks, bakery products, white bread," she told IANSlife.
According to Zamurrud Patel, Chief Dietician, Global Hospital, Mumbai, carbohydrates are broken down by our body to make glucose. So, our body does need carbohydrates to maintain a good energy level. Carbohydrates are present in different percentages in almost all food groups. Therefore, practically it's difficult to be on a zero-carb diet!
Carbohydrates and weight loss
Carbohydrates are often blamed for weight gain, but a right proportion and a good choice can help to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Good Carbohydrates consist of fiber which gives a longer satiety value and are often low in calories.
Low carbohydrate diets as a way to rapid weight loss, are however gaining more of attention today. The idea behind a low carb diet is that decreasing carbohydrates lowers insulin levels which cause the body to burn stored fat for energy and ultimately leads to weight loss.
Most people can lose weight if they restrict calories in diet and increase physical activity. Low carb diets have potential benefits in short term weight loss but more research is needed to understand long term consequences.
Thus, a balanced nutritional approach is always a right way to good health, as any food can never be good or bad. It is the way in which we consume it and how it adds to our diet.

What is ghrelin? All you need to know about this hormone – Medical News Today
Ghrelin is a hormone. Its primary role is to regulate appetite. It also facilitates the function of the pituitary gland, controls insulin, and protects cardiovascular health.
In this article, we explore what ghrelin is, its functions and other effects, and how a person can reduce the amount in their body.
Ghrelin, also known as the hunger hormone, is a circulatory hormone that has many functions in the body.
The production and release of ghrelin occur mainly in the stomach but also in the small intestine, brain, and pancreas.
Although ghrelin performs various roles in the human body, its main functions revolve around the gastrointestinal area. This part of the body includes the stomach and small intestine.
Ghrelin facilitates the sensations of hunger and fullness, and it promotes fat storage.
Levels of ghrelin change significantly throughout the day, increasing when a person is hungry and decreasing after eating.
As well as dictating hunger and satiety, ghrelin has several other functions. Some of these include:
A person needs ghrelin in their body to maintain and regulate some vital bodily functions. However, as ghrelin plays a key role in hunger and satiety, reducing levels of ghrelin may cause people to have less appetite and, as a result, lose weight.
Some research shows that ghrelin levels increase after weight loss. A person may feel hungrier than usual, leading them to eat more and possibly put on the weight that they lost.
However, research highlights that changes in ghrelin levels alone are not a sufficient predictor of weight gain after weight loss. Behavioral and environmental factors may also play a part.
A person who wishes to reduce ghrelin levels in their body naturally can try the following:
Studies highlight that consuming foods high in fructose may increase ghrelin. The raised levels of this hormone may make a person eat more during a meal or feel hungry soon after a meal.
Consuming meals high in protein may suppress ghrelin, leading to more sustained feelings of fullness.
One study suggests that men with an average body weight felt fuller and had lower ghrelin levels after consuming high carbohydrate meals. These results were not apparent in the participants with obesity.
There is some debate as to whether exercise can increase or decrease levels of ghrelin in the body. A 2018 review found that intense aerobic exercise may reduce levels of ghrelin, while another found that circuit exercises may increase ghrelin levels.
Even though some forms of exercise may increase ghrelin levels, this might not affect the feeling of hunger. Exercise also affects other hormones, such as insulin and leptin, which also play a role in hunger.
High and chronic levels of stress may cause ghrelin levels to rise. Due to this, people experiencing these types of stress may overeat. If people feel comforted by eating during periods of stress, this may activate the reward pathway, and they may lean toward comfort eating.
There is also some evidence that cannabis stimulates the release of ghrelin. Experts believe that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis, is primarily responsible.
A 2020 study found that taking cannabis orally led to higher ghrelin levels than smoking or vaporizing it. This route of administration may, therefore, cause a person to feel hungry and eat more food.
Ghrelin is a hormone that has many functions in the human body. These include regulating the appetite, controlling insulin, and improving cardiovascular health.
A person requires ghrelin to regulate various bodily processes. However, some people may wish to reduce the amount in their body because doing this may suppress the appetite, resulting in a person eating less.
Those who wish to reduce ghrelin levels in their body naturally may consider reducing their intake of fructose, exercising, and attempting to minimize their stress levels.

She said;
I didnt initially decide to go on a weight loss journey; it chose me. It all started when I put up a post a while back about weight loss companies using slim people to promote their products and services. I told them to use me if truly their products work. A lot of them picked up the challenge but I was able to settle with the deshapeables. I decided to work with them because I like their plan and I hope it would work.

The 42-year-old thespian and movie producer emphasized that she has no plans on becoming slim because she has accepted who she is and her plus-size figure will not in anyway affect her work or her brand.
In fairness, I really cant tell if losing weight would help my brand because with or without losing weight, Im Eniola Badmus. If this works, people would just see the new body on me. However, its not going to be a total transformation because I still want to be a chubby girl; not slim. The goal is to be chubby but sexier. Maybe like losing three sizes. People should not think that I would be a shadow of who they know. Im only doing this because I want to. No matter how much we shout about body positivity, one would still have to be on a diet. One would have to watch what one eats and exercise.

I dont want to be plus-size and unhealthy. I might not work-out like fitness enthusiasts but I try to keep fit. For clarity sake, I didnt and dont bend to societal pressure. I have a very thick skin and like to do whatever suites me at any particular time. The idea is to see what I would look like afterwards. There are some clothes I feel like wearing but cant wear them till I lose weight. I still belong to the fat girls association.

Running to Lose Weight? Avoid These 4 Mistakes – LIVESTRONG.COM
Being overly loyal to your running routine can stand in the way of losing weight.
Since many gyms remain closed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, more and more people are seeking simple at-home workouts to help them lose weight. Enter running, an equipment-free exercise that's accessible to anyone with a pair of sneakers.
While pounding the pavement can help you shed pesky pounds initially, you might find your progress petering out after a few weeks or months. If you're running regularly and your weight is barely budging or worse, you're unintentionally gaining you've likely stumbled into some common running traps.
We spoke with Paul Kriegler, a registered dietitian and personal trainer with Life Time, to find out why the number on your scale might be at a standstill and ways to avoid the following four running mistakes.
Running might be your passion, but if you hit the open road every day, it can lead to some serious consequences for your body and ultimately your weight-loss goals.
"The risks of injury or illness go up significantly if someone runs every day without adequate rest and recovery between sessions," Kriegler says.
In other words, when you push too hard and run 7 days a week, your body doesn't have ample time to repair. And once this happens, you're more likely to hurt yourself and get sidelined, which can sabotage your efforts to shed pounds. Think about it: It's hard to exercise and lose weight if you're stuck on the couch for days or weeks nursing an injury.
To keep your body in tip-top shape, you need quality sleep, a nutrient-dense diet with ample protein and produce and a balance of heavy and light physical activity.
Try the following mix of physical activity, per Kriegler:
2. You Stick to the Same Routine
We're all creatures of habit. But sticking to the same running routine speed, distance and route won't do you any favors when it comes to weight loss.
"Once the body adapts to a set of variables (frequency, intensity, time and/or type of activity), then it will just maintain" and your weight loss will likely grind to a halt, Kriegler says.
What's worse, your body could even "break down from the repetitive nature of the same pace, speed and movement patterns, which use the same muscle fibers over and over while others become more or less dormant," he adds. Once again, this is a recipe for injury.
To avoid this and keep your goals on track, train smart and switch things up. No two runs should be the same. "There should be a very noticeable degree of difference between runs if you want to become a fitter, faster, stronger runner," Kriegler says.
For example, one day you might focus on distance and endurance while another you shoot for speed by incorporating sprint intervals. In fact, running intervals boosts your calorie burn and builds lean muscle, which are both good news for weight loss.
3. You Overestimate Calories Burned
Ravenous after a long run? "Physical activity that depletes carbohydrate stores (such as distance running) is often followed by cravings," Kriegler says.
And while it's tempting to binge a big carb-heavy meal post-run, you might be misjudging how many calories you've burned during your workout, leading to unintentional overeating.
"Many runners tend to over-consume carbs either because they physiologically sense they need fuel or replenishment, or because they psychologically feel they've 'earned' some sort of indulgence," Kriegler says.
This "overcompensation is perhaps what makes running such an unpredictable and unreliable weight-loss tool," he says.
Some runners even adopt an unhealthy mindset, using their running to justify overeating or lying around more, Kriegler adds. If this sounds familiar, you might want to take a pause and examine your relationship with food and exercise.
This combination of mostly sedentary behavior and overindulging is not the ideal equation for dropping pounds. For healthy weight loss and a healthier lifestyle in general you should supplement your running routine with a diet of moderately low carbs and lots of protein and plenty of unstructured, low-intensity daily activity, Kriegler says.
4. You Dont Lift Weights
Many runners erroneously think that lifting weights might bulk them up and slow them down. "I've seen many runners focus too much on being 'light' and not enough on being strong," Kriegler says.
To become a stronger, more durable athlete, you should concentrate on maintaining lean muscle while losing fat, Kriegler says. And the way to achieve that is through resistance training.
Building lean muscle not only increases your strength and power and enables you to run faster but it's also particularly important for weight loss. Remember, the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest.
Plus, cross training can help reduce your risk of overuse injuries and improve your overall fitness, according to the American Council on Fitness.

Former NFL Linemen Reveal The Surprising Struggles Of Losing Weight After Spending Years Getting Paid To Be A Massive Human – BroBible
Fans know me more for losing weight than they do for anything I did in my entire career.
That quote comes courtesy of offensive tackle Jordan Gross, who played 11 seasons with the Carolina Panthers before retiring in 2014. He shared that thought with ESPN, which conducted interviews with nine former NFL linemen about life after football. When I first read it, I found it impressively depressing, but after digging a little deeper, I found it was actually strangely inspiring.
Making a living as an NFL lineman is inherently insane, as you have to constantly eat an absurdly large amount of food in the name of job security. If youve ever tried eating a 5,000 calorie lunch, you know that its certainly no small feat, but if youve been consistently eating 5,000 calorie lunches every day for over a decade, its harder than you thing to suddenly find yourself switching to a normal life and the diet that comes with it.
Gross somehow managed to radically alter his food intake and lifestyle to become a healthy, non-football playing person, and while many of the other guys at his position end up doing the same, anyone whos tried to lose weight knows its not as easy as just telling yourself to eat less foodespecially if youve conditioned yourself to consume as much as you possibly can.
Joe Thomas looks like an entirely different person compared to his appearance during his time on the Browns but the transformation basically required him to reboot his brain, as he said:
Youre training yourself to have an eating disorder the way you view food when youre in the NFL and to try to deprogram that is a real challenge If I went two hours without eating, I literally would have cut your arm off and started eating it.
These guys are essentially forced to be at least 300 pounds, because if you lose a solid chunk of weight, you can also risk losing your job. Many of these players are told their worth can practically be measured in calories and weight, which is an excellent recipe for creating body image and self-esteem issues, which is something former Falcon and Buccaneer Joe Hawley says he constantly struggled with:
I always had this insecurity of being big when it came to dating life; talking to women and going out being a 300-pound man. I didnt want to be that big, but I had to because I loved football and that was my job.
Its straight-up not normal to be this big. Thats not fat-shaming. Thats reality. It is not healthy to force giant meals down your throat every two hours for the sake of your job. But thats what the life of a lineman is like.
One of the wildest discoveries to me is how Thomas says he had to essentially rewire his brain to not eat when he was full. When playing in Cleveland, he had to be constantly chowing down. The man probably hadnt felt an ounce of hunger since he entered the league when he retired. I have a habit of eating ice cream every night and it would take a whole lot for me to stop that, so I can hardly imagine how tough it was for Thomas.
The worst part? Theres not much glory in being a lineman. Headlines are always about the quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs. Occasionally, cornerbacks, safeties, tight ends get some time in the spotlight. But linemen? Not so much. At least theyre finally getting some attention here.

Dom Sibley inspired to lose weight by work ethic of senior England players – The Guardian
Dom Sibley was greeted with a Hello, Fridge from Joe Root when he first joined the England setup last winter. But now a more slimline version of the Warwickshire opener heads into his first Test on home soil after shedding 12kg during lockdown.
Sibley has never found his bulky 6ft 3in frame to be a hindrance when it comes to run-scoring and bar this nickname around the squad a likely nod to William Perry, the former American footballer it has scarcely been mentioned in dispatches.
A maiden Test century compiled over eight hours in Cape Town during January certainly proved as much, but when Sibley was in Sri Lanka for Englands aborted tour two months later he decided to make a change that will become more obvious when he takes to the field against West Indies on Wednesday.
For the first time I felt a little bit self-conscious about my physique and my weight, the 24-year-old said. You look at the guys who have been in the system a long time Ben Stokes is a bit of a freak when it comes to training. It was after seeing him, Root and Jos Buttler running in after a session in Colombo.
I remember being absolutely spent, especially with the heat, so that was a real eye-opener. The graft those guys put in to stay at this level, for the amount of time they have done [in the team], is something that I want to do. That was part of my motivation. I just remember sitting on the plane home thinking: I need to do something, especially during lockdown when we couldnt improve anything cricket-related. It was an opportunity for me and Im glad to have been able to stick to it.
Sibley admits to coasting in that regard previously, compared with more assiduous work on his batting, and believes it may help his agility in the field and prevent injury. Had he not made the most of the enforced time off, he said, he would have gone into the delayed summer with a few regrets.
The 18 first-class counties have agreed to play both red-ball and white-ball cricket during this summer's shortened domestic season.
A majority vote was reached at a meeting of county chairmen on Tuesday. The agreement will now be passed on for approval from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), after which a new fixture schedule will be drawn up and announced.
County cricket has been given the go-ahead to start on 1 August, having been on hold since April due to the coronavirus pandemic. The ECB insists health matters are of paramount importance and says counties will face further assessments to ensure it is safe for play to resume.
"The safety and wellbeing of all players, staff and officials remains the priority of the ECB," read a statement. "All first-class counties will undergo further medical risk assessments and venue compliance approval as planning progresses to ensure safe environments for the start of the men's domestic season."
The men's County Championship was initially scheduled to start on 12 April. PA Media
It is a shame he and Zak Crawley, another to make his debut during the winter, will not experience a home crowd this year. England have now confirmed dates for the Tests in August against Pakistan, which will similarly be behind closed doors at the two biosecure venues, the Rose Bowl and Old Trafford.
As a patient accumulator of runs, the lack of crowd atmosphere to give flagging opposition bowlers an energy boost could play into Sibleys hands, but he knows he must be on alert: his front-on technique has driven many a county attack to distraction but international bowlers are starting to explore potential chinks in its armour.
South Africa brought in a leg-slip and began aiming for the ribs, a tactic Jofra Archer deployed successfully during last weeks threeday intrasquad warm-up match. Sibley drafted into the side to help deploy Englands bat-long approach under the head coach, Chris Silverwood knows the West Indies quicks will ask similar questions.
Its somewhere Ive scored a lot of runs in county cricket. Thats the great thing about Test cricket, youve always got new challenges and suddenly my strength is being turned into a way to get me out. Thats just another thing for me to overcome. Youve got to find ways to deal with it.

Ive played the pull shot since a young age, but in South Africa, with the bouncy wickets, I didnt feel in control, so I chose to get out of the way. But in that area around the nipple to hip its a case of being in control, choosing when to play and when not to play. Its going to be a case of me managing those risks.
Risk-management is very much the hallmark of a series being staged in such alien conditions during a global pandemic. For Sibley, who has shown discipline through his recent battle with the fridge, it tends to result in runs.

‘With Intermittent Fasting And The CICO Diet, I Lost Over 100 Pounds In 14 Months’ – Women’s Health
My name is Carrie Robinson (@keepcalmcarryonfit), and Im 23. Im from Baltimore and Im an operations coordinator for a soccer company. After reaching my heaviest weight, I realized I wanted to focus on my health so I could spend more time with my family.
Growing up, I had a very rocky relationship with my weight. I was overweight most of my childhood, but when I was 16, I lost over 50 pounds. Unfortunately, the way I lost the weight wasnt healthy, and I was diagnosed with anorexia shortly after.
My relationship with food was extremely sensitive. I was in a binge and over-restrict cycle, which was really hard on me. I went to therapy for a while and that helped a lot. I also moved out of a toxic environment, which helped me heal and overcome my disordered eating habits.
Fast-forward to August 3rd, 2016, when I had my son. I had a lot of health issues during my pregnancy, including high blood pressure, IBS, and a high resting heart rate while I was pregnant. I gained 60 pounds, and after my sons birth, I was diagnosed with postpartum depression and anxiety.

I gained another 10 pounds over the following two years, putting me at 246 pounds.
Overall, I was just miserable and suffering constantly. I couldnt even carry my son around for more than two minutes without being completely out of breath.

On August 12th, 2018, I decided to start making changes for my health.
When I had lost weight previously (in a healthy mindset!), counting calories worked for me. A calorie deficit diet, or calories-in-calories-out (CICO) diet, is easy to track and maintain for me.
I also had originally cut dairy out of my diet to help with my stomach issues and acne, and eventually I started intermittent fasting along with calorie counting. I really like fasting because it eliminated late-night snacking.
Im usually never hungry in the morning anyway, so Ill drink my coffee and then wait until noon to eat my first meal. I enjoy the idea of having a window of time I can eat.

I tried picking up running, but it was really harsh on my knees and back. I ended up buying a cheap cycling machine off Amazon and would use it for 30 minutes a day for the first two months of my weight loss journey.
Then, I switched to running because it was less harsh on my body after losing 30 pounds. I got into running through an app called Couch To 5K, which taught me how to build my endurance, and I never looked back.

Now my typical week of exercise is usually four to six days of running. I love it so much. Three of those days are short runs for one to three miles followed by lower body strength training, upper body strength training, or core training.

Losing weight gave me the confidence I never had but always should have had. I shouldve always believed in myself, but it took doing something as difficult as this to recognize my potential. Progress isnt always linear and sometimes we have ups and downs, but the most important part is to keep pushing and stay strong. You've got this.

What were you weight loss goals at the beginning of the year? Have you met your weight loss goals? Are you moving in the right direction? Is it hard to stay on track?
Losing "stubborn" fat is hard and as you get older - it just gets harder and harder. You might go to the gym five days a week, sweat on the treadmill for an hour, and see maybe a pound or two drop in a month. Is that really worth your time? Or... imagine going to a medical facility, laying down, spending 25 minutes relaxing, then getting up and finding out you've lost two inches around your waist. Which do you prefer? What if you could keep doing that and losing more and more fat until you looked like you did years ago? If you have any interest in this and how it works when it comes to inch loss, you should stop what you're doing and call the office for an appointment immediately. This new treatment technology - now available in Tucson - uses a special light therapy to trick your mitochondria (in your fat cells) to release their fat content. ULTRASLIM is now cleared for prescription use in the United States as the only noninvasive treatment for immediate fat removal without dieting, exercise, or pills.
This treatment is safe and painless! If you eat better, drink plenty of water, stay away from sugars, and carbohydrates, this can lead to permanent fat loss without surgery. Here's a heads up. If you have tried liposuction in the past - you know that when you
"regain the weight" it goes to different places-making your body look distorted and then unfortunately, you're back to where you started, only worse. With this technology we don't destroy your fat cells. What we do is we simply drain the contents of the fat cells so you lose the inches and look good again.
