What Is The Sirtfood DietAnd Can It Help You Lose Weight? – Pulse Nigeria

Though Adele didnt nod to her weight loss in the posts caption, she did speak to a fan about her weight loss journey back in January while she was vacationing in Anguilla. According to People, Adele shared that shed lost about 100 pounds, and while she hasnt made any public statements about how shes lost the weight, several sources have claimed that her new lifestyle reportedly revolves around a trendy eating plan: the Sirtfood Diet .

In January, the New York Post reported that Adele had lost 50 pounds by following the eating plan (and her name was originally attached to the diet back in 2016 ). A former trainer of the star also told The Sun that she believes the changes in Adele's physique come down to " 90 percent diet ."

And Adele isn't the diet's only fan. The Sirtfood Diet has allegedly received love from a number of celebs in addition to the "Someone Like You" singer, including Pippa Middleton and famous athletes like former pro boxer David Haye .

The short version: The Sirtfood Diet is said to be rich in foods that contain a particular nutrient that helps trigger genes in the body connected to fat loss and fat storage (more on all this in a minute). And some people say they love it because there are some pretty delicious foods that have these special nutrients (hi, wine and chocolate), so you don't feel deprived.

But...is the Sirtfood Diet too good to be true? Here's everything you need to know about the oh-so-buzzy-right-now weight-loss method, with input from nutrition experts Caroline Apovian , MD, director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at the Boston Medical Center, and Edwina Clark , RD, head of nutrition and wellness for Yummly.

The diet comes from the book of the same name. The authorsAidan Goggins and Glen Mattenof The Sirtfood Diet advise eating mostly foods rich in sirtuins, a type of protein in plant foods. "The eating plan itself is designed to 'turn on' the sirtuin genes (particularly SIRT-1), which are believed to boost metabolism, increase fat burning, fight inflammation, and curb appetite," says Clark.

Early studies suggest that calorie restriction and resveratrol (a polyphenol found in foods like grapes, blueberries, and peanuts), activate the SIRT-1 gene, and these two principles underpin the Sirtfood approach to eating.

The diet lasts a total of three weeks and is divided into two phases.

Once those three weeks are up, there's no set plan to follow. To continue on the Sirtfood path, all you have to do is tweak each of your meals to include as many Sirtfoods as possible. Exercise is also encouraged (30 minutes of activity, five days a week), but getting sweaty isn't the main focus of the weight-loss plan.

Though the diet may require you to consume foods you maybe don't on the regular, the meals aren't any less tasty. Potential meals you can have while sticking to the Sirtfood Diet include a celery and blue cheese soup, chicken and kale with spicy salsa, and butternut pumpkin with buckwheat. All three of these recipes are found in the The Sirtfood Diet: The Ultimate Sirtfood Diet Book For Beginners , a recipe book for people new to the diet, but you can also grab inspo from other recipe books or research online. The Sirtfood Diet's website also provides a few meal options, like a baked salmon salad with creamy mint dressing and baked potatoes with spicy chickpea stew.

As for the green juice, which is huge component of the diet, you'll need to have a juicer handy to make it. Here's the recipe:

What foods are considered "Sirtfoods"?

Sirtfoods are any food that is rich is the sirtuin protein, which is type of plant-based protein that has shown some promise in clinical studies to improve metabolic health. Sirtfoods include:

You can get a complete list of Sirtfoods recommended on the diet within the book.

So, can you lose weight on the Sirtfood Diet?

The Sirtfood Diet includes many nutritious foods that are beneficial for weight loss , such as celery, kale, green tea, Medjool dates, lean chicken, lean red meat, and parsley, says Dr. Apovian. The diet also restricts or eliminates many foods that could lead to weight gain, such as refined flours, added sugars, and processed foods with little to no nutritional value. And thanks to that ridiculously low calorie intake, followers will likely lose weight provided they stick to the plan, she says.

"Evidence to date suggests that caloric restriction and intermittent fasting can be an effective strategy for weight loss and improving metabolic health," says Clark. "However, this may not be appropriate for everyone," she says.

There have been no studies done on humans that examine the Sirtfood Diet's effects on weight loss and health, but researchers have done studies on the effect of sirtuin proteins in animals. Sirtuins may play a role in slowing down the aging process and extending lifespan, particularly SIRT1 and SIRT6, per a 2014 study conducted on mice.

An older study , conducted on mice in 2004, found that an increase in sirtuin levels led to fat loss. Though both of these studies concluded in promising results, they don't guarantee that the results would also apply to humans.

Are there any downsides to the Sirtfood Diet?

The long-term sustainability of this plan is questionable. Once you're past the first few weeks, there's no eating strategy to follow other than adding more Sirtfoods to each meal. This makes the diet much more flexible than most, which is a huge perk, but a three-week long stretch of deprivation could easily lead to overeating during phase two, ultimately placing you back at square one.

Even if you're uber-disciplined, this is still a tough diet to follow. "A mere 1,000 calories will leave most people feeling very hungry," says Dr. Apovian. And if you're not a fan of green juice, a staple of the first week, that will make you even hungrier, she says. Also, since most of the weight loss in phase one is water weight, it will come right back on once you resume normal eating, she says.

According to Men's Health , eating fewer calories can come with its own troubles. If you're not used to eating less throughout your day, you may also experience fatigue, nausea, impaired mental focus, and headaches.

Plus, following any diet that doesn't include a healthy amount of protein (e.g., during the first week of the Sirtfood Diet), may result in muscle loss and a slower metabolism, says Dr. Apovian, making it harder to manage your weight. To lose weight and keep it off, building muscle through eating plenty of protein and working out with weights is paramount.

On top of all that, research on SIRT-1 activating foods is still very much in its infancy, so it's unclear whether consuming polyphenol-rich foods has a substantial impact on weight in everyone. "Weight is a multi-faceted concept, involving complex interactions between our unique genetic makeup and our diet, movement patterns, sleep habits, and emotional state," notes Clark.

Ultimately, eating a diet rich in a variety of healthy foods, including lean protein sources, different fruits and vegetables, and whole grains is a healthier, more sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off, says Dr. Apovian.

The bottom line: The approved foods in the Sirtfood Diet are low in calories and high in nutrients, which is great for weight loss . However, this particular diet may be restrictive and tough to maintain. Talk to a doc you trust about whether the plan is right for you before starting it.

Can eating chocolates make you fat? Here is a fact-check – Times of India

A little overdoing of chocolate treats and delicacies is often accompanied by well-meaning but unwelcome advice from people we know. You will gain weight! You will spoil your teeth! You are eating empty calories!A small piece of chocolate certainly acts as a treat when taken in moderation along with healthy meals. However, a lot of people refrain from eating it cause they worry about getting fat or putting on a few extra kilos because of the sinful delight. Read on to know if chocolate can actually make you gain weight:The short answer is yes, chocolate will make you fat just like calories from any other food will. This is why you need to practice portion control and choose the right chocolate.

Should you avoid eating chocolates?Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it doesn't mean that you need to avoid eating it completely. Having a piece or a two can actually help in many ways.

Chocolate can help in reducing any stress-induced weight gain and in some cases may even motivate you to exercise more.

Studies have shown that consumption of dark chocolate can help reduce overall body mass index. This is because dark chocolate has a lower amount of sugar as compared to other varieties of chocolate. In some cases, it can even help you keep the cravings at bay.

The chocolate trick to lose weightAccording to neuroscientist Will Clower, eating a small piece of chocolate, 20 minutes before your meal, triggers the 'I am full' hormone in the brain, cutting the amount of food you consume. This also helps in avoiding binge eating later in the day.

The best chocolate to eat while trying to lose weightDark chocolate with at least 70 per cent cocoa can help boost your metabolism, prevent insulin spike and make you feel satiated. All this, in turn, can help you lose weight.

Lose weight of fusion reactor component – Space Daily

The group of associate professor Hitoshi Tamura and others of the National Institute of Natural Sciences (NINS) National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) first applied topology optimization technique to the concept design of a helical fusion reactor which aims to demonstrate power generation. The group successfully achieved a weight reduction of about 2,000 tons of the support structure surrounding helically twisted coils while maintaining the strength of the structure.

A superconducting coil is essential to realize a magnetic fusion power reactor, in which plasma is required to be confined by a strong magnetic field. The superconducting coil is made of a superconducting conductor wound several hundred times and the coil generates a strong magnetic field by passing a large current flow of about 100 kiloamperes. An electromagnetic force is generated when a magnetic field acts on a coil in which an electric current flows.

This electromagnetic force is so large that the superconducting coil itself cannot withstand this force. To prevent causing the coil to move or deform extremely, it is necessary to firmly surround the coil with a structure made of a strong material to support the coil. This structure is called a coil support structure (IMAGE 1).

So far, the weight of the coil support structure of the helical fusion reactor has been estimated to be 20 times heavier than that of the Large Helical Device (LHD) and 1.6 times that of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).

In addition, since the superconducting coils are operated at cryogenic conditions (below minus 260 degrees Celsius), the heavy and solid coil support structure also needs to be cooled to the same temperature as the coils to maintain the coils in the superconducting state.

Reducing an amount of materials is an extremely important issue from the viewpoints of cost and power consumption. It is strongly desired to reduce the total weight of the coil support structure as much as possible while maintaining the role of sustaining the coil. To solve this issue, the research group applied the "topology optimization method" to the design of the coil support structure.

Topology optimization is an analytical method to reduce the volume of the structure by removing the part that does not affect the strength. It is equivalent to searching for the optimum shape from various combinations including the change of the topology.

This method has the potential to create shapes that cannot be imagined based on conventional designs. Since it is extremely effective in reducing the weight and cost such as automobile parts, it has developed rapidly in recent years. However, there has been no example of application of the topology optimization to overall design of a component in the fusion reactor.

The research group applied the topology optimization method for the first time to the overall design of the structure in a huge and complicated fusion reactor to reduce its weight. The stress force acting in the structure determines the strength of the structure.

If the stress is larger than the acceptable level of the component material, the structure will start breaking. Structural optimization should be done so that the stress does not exceed acceptable levels by reducing weight. The research group analyzed in detail what level of stress and deformation would act on the coil support structure due to the electromagnetic force acting on the coil.

Then, topology optimization was applied to the model. In topology optimization, the model is divided into many small regions and the degree of influence on the overall strength when a certain region is removed is calculated.

Finally, a set of regions that can be removed without any influence is determined. In this way, the optimum shape that does not affect the overall strength and has reduced weight was found. Consequently, the weight of the coil support structure was successfully reduced by about 25% from 7,800 tons.

In the future, it is expected that the fusion reactor design research using the topology optimization method will make further progress, and we will greatly approach the demonstration of the fusion reactor.

Dublin woman shares how she lost 3st – and continued to lose weight during lockdown – RSVP Live

A Dublin woman has shared how she lost 3st and feels more confident than ever after making some changes to her lifestyle.

Jules Grimes, 36, said she tried lots of different diets in an effort to shed the extra weight she was carrying, but nothing worked long-term.

I lost a serious amount of weight before I got married, but within a year of the wedding I had piled it all back on again, she told RSVP.

I went on holidays with my friends in 2016, and I just look bloated and unhappy in the photos.

My mam had joined Slimming World and she was looking amazing and eating lots of lovely food. So I said if she could do it, I could do it too.

Jules joined a Slimming World group in Carraroe, Sligo, in January 2017, and said she felt shocked when she saw the number on the scales.

I saw I was over 14st, that was a pretty low day for me, she said.

The consultant, Charlotte, asked me what my target weight loss was. I remembered someone saying to me Youll never be as thin as the day you got married.

And I knew that was it, I was going to lose the three stone I put on since the wedding.

With the support of Charlotte and everyone in her group, Jules began losing the weight little by little.

It seemed like such a massive mountain to climb at first but I just took it a half stone at a time, she said.

Within a year and a half, she had reached her target and slimmed down from a size 14-16 to a size 10.

She said that she had actually thought she ate well before she joined the group, but she didnt realise how many high fat, high sugar foods she was consuming.

Its when I actually took a step back and looked at how much cheese and bread I was eating that I realised you have to be aware of that. Now I would weigh and measure those foods, you can pull back on them but still enjoy them as well fish and beans and other lovely food.

I would have relied on quick fixes, buying ready-made lunches, take away on the weekends. Out of convenience, I was eating a lot of high sugar, high fat foods.

With Slimming World, youre changing how you cook, how you shop and how you eat. So I started cooking from scratch, and I realised I actually really enjoy it.

She added: The plan is also handy because I can adapt it to my needs as a vegetarian, and its all food that my husband will eat as well so I dont have to cook one meal for myself and one meal for him!

Jules has seen a boost to her confidence in many ways, from feeling more self-assured at work to experimenting with fashion.

Before my weight loss I would have worn a lot of dark clothes and elasticated waistbands, she said.

Now I would wear more colour, Im excited for my online shopping to arrive rather than panicking over whether it will fit.

Im more outgoing, I feel more confident in meetings at work, standing up and giving presentations.

Jules also became a Slimming World consultant a year ago, something she said she never would have dreamed of doing before.

I love helping other people lose weight and seeing their confidence build too, she said.

With the lockdown especially, everyone felt a bit helpless. It was great to be able to keep up the virtual groups to have that focus and share tips and advice.

"In the first week of lockdown, it felt almost like Christmas without the presents, like no-one was watching. I did go off plan but as soon as Charlotte's virtual group started up again I was back on track.

I know that if I hadnt been able to do that, I would definitely have eaten more, and then felt bad about myself, and then eaten more because I felt bad about myself. Its a vicious cycle.

"I've actually lost weight during lockdown, not a lot but I lost the few pounds I put on and I've been chipping away."

Sharing her top weight loss tips, she said: Eat often but eat healthy stuff.

In the morning I might have loads of fruit and yoghurt, my lunch could be some homemade soup, or leftovers from my dinner the night before.

During the day, Id always be snacking on fruit, berries, low Syn foods. If youre hungry, youre going to pick at things.

At night time, Id make sure I had room for a meringue nest with some yoghurt and berries, or a low calorie jelly.

I always make sure that I have a good shop in, and I make sure that I have interesting things in the house that I want to eat, but that arent going to do too much damage if I go mad on them.

Jules is a member of Charlotte's Slimming World group in Carraroe, Sligo.

Intermittent Fasting: All You Need to Know – Techstory

Youve probably tried many different strategies to lose that belly fat and become healthier. Perhaps, you did many gym workouts, followed professional tips from experts, or even tried starvation. All those strategies likely required diligent calorie counting and countless hours in the gym.

But, what if you could achieve the same goal without so much effort?

You can with intermittent fasting.

Many people whove tried it have been amazed by the positive impact on their bodies. Despite having the term fasting, its less about how much you eat and more about when you eat.

However, remember that what you eat is always an important factor in any weight-loss plan. You certainly need a well-balanced diet, especially rich in essential vitamins.

But, youre probably wondering how its possible to lose weight without focusing on cutting down your food intake, and only skipping a few hours in between meals.

Well, this guide explains how it works, the different options available, and how to apply it.

Different misconceptions about intermittent fasting exist.

One such misconception is calling it a diet.

Intermittent fasting isnt a diet because it doesnt restrict the types of food you eat. Instead, it offers a well-designed pattern to schedule your meals so your body can fully utilize the nutrients. It gives you control on when to eat and when not to eat, rather than obsessing about calorie intake.

You can use different strategies to help you effectively schedule your meals. One effective strategy is using an app like the BetterMe app. This helps you maintain your meal schedule while focusing on your everyday activities.

Intermittent fasting is quite different from weight-loss diets and fitness plans which can reduce your muscle mass along with the fat.

Intermittent fasting doesnt affect your muscle mass. In fact, a 2011 study found that intermittent calorie restriction (intermittent fasting) may be more effective in lean mass retention.

Therefore, the intermittent fasting schedule simply helps you get rid of some of that excess weight.

What makes it even better is that it doesnt require a major behavioural change. Simply scheduling your meals is far easier than checking your calories during each meal or searching for specific types of foods.

Intermittent fasting isnt just useful for weight loss. It also offers a wide range of benefits, ranging from simply being less stressful to reducing the risk of adverse health conditions.

The BetterMe app can help you get all those benefits by guiding you in the weight-loss program.

Here are the benefits you can expect.

If youve ever gone through a dieting plan, you know how challenging it can be. Besides, changing to a new meal plan and cutting down your food intake may not work. Weight-loss and getting healthy isnt always about what or how much you eat.

Changing when you eat is more effective.

Once you understand the process, youll find it incredibly easy. Better still, you dont need to constantly check your meal schedule if you use an app like BetterMe. The app provides useful features that help you to always stay up-to-date with your meal schedules.

Thats much easier than diet plans which may require special types of foods which you cannot easily find. And, you might not enjoy the new meals or feel less motivated to follow the diet plan.

At first glance, an intermittent fasting schedule may seem like a big challenge. However, its much simpler to schedule your meals for specific times than to fight the food cravings you typically experience when you cut down your carbs in a diet plan.

You may not face any food cravings with intermittent fasting which lets you eat your normal everyday meals at set intervals. As long as you eat in moderation, the weight-loss program can work for you.

Intermittent fasting may be the key to weight loss.

This has been proven in a study which shows that insulin levels in your body drop when you eat less at specific times. Respondents in the study experienced an increased capacity to burn fat during the intermittent fasting periods.

You can schedule a 24-hour fast on alternate days or shorter fasting periods. As you do this continually for a long period, your insulin levels drop and you lose more weight when you burn fat.

Additionally, youll end up consuming fewer calories with this strategy.

Consistency is critical to achieving those results. Thats why an app like BetterMe can be a valuable and helpful tool. It has easy on-boarding options to help you get started the right way, as well as a wide choice of well-researched meal options with directions on when to eat.

As you practice intermittent fasting, it helps you control your insulin levels and manage your weight. In turn, that helps you avoid obesity and prevent many of the related health conditions that arise from obesity.

Obesity causes an increased risk of:

Simply by preventing obesity through intermittent fasting, youll manage to avoid all those health conditions.

However, just like every weight management program, intermittent fasting isnt suitable when you already have certain health conditions. Its advisable to consult your doctor concerning your health and safety, if you have any health condition.

The beauty of intermittent fasting is the simplicity of this weight-management strategy.

In contrast, a diet plan or calorie counting can get quite complicated and stressful. You need to be extremely careful about what you eat and how much you eat during each and every meal. That makes it less likely that youll be consistent with the plan, especially when you get food cravings.

In contrast, intermittent fasting simply focuses on scheduling your meals.

In fact, you dont need to be worried about skipping your meals when you use the BetterMe app to schedule the meals. Apart from notifying you of meal schedules, the app also offers useful meal suggestions to make your schedule more effective.

Since intermittent fasting may mean missing just one meal, its much easier to follow compared to complete fasting. And thats one meal less to worry about cooking.

If you want to live a long and healthy life, youll be glad to know that intermittent fasting can help with that too.

A study on rats showed the potential of animals living longer through intermittent fasting. The same thing may also apply to humans, since its a similar process based on reduced calorie intake.

Since intermittent fasting limits your calorie intake within certain periods, your body adapts to keep you going. The potential effect is longer life and a slower aging process.

In order to get the maximum benefit from intermittent fasting and avoid unnecessary mistakes, you must follow the right preparation steps.

Most importantly, always consider your health first at every step, which is critical in getting the most benefit.

Once you start on the program, BetterMe app can provide multiple fasting options, so you can find one that works best for you.

With that in mind, heres how to implement intermittent fasting.

Without good health, any weight management program may not work for you.

Therefore, consider your health status before starting out on intermittent fasting. If you have such medical conditions as diabetes or high blood pressure, first consult your doctor.

Also, some medications should not be taken while fasting. Therefore, ask your doctor if you should proceed with intermittent fasting while on medication.

Even if you get the go ahead to proceed but thereafter feel unwell, its wise to stop immediately and seek medical help promptly.

Avoid being overconfident when starting this program. You may cause more harm than good by going overboard.

If this is your first time, always start with the easy fasting options. The BetterMe app is quite useful in this regard, providing multiple plans ranging from easy to more challenging options. You can conveniently select one that suits your ability.

This doesnt just apply to the fasting part, but also the meals.

Since your diet isnt restricted, you can generally eat your usual meals. The most important consideration is to get enough nutrients and fluids. Also try to limit foods with unhealthy components like high levels of saturated fats, sugar, and salt.

The rule of thumb is to go for a healthy balanced diet not processed foods like diet soda. If you need a drink to stay hydrated, water and fruit juice are better healthy options.

To keep you going from start to end, focus on your intended goal. Do you want to lose weight, avoid harmful health conditions, or to live longer? As you focus on your goals, the BetterMe app will guide you in implementing the program.

Intermittent fasting schedules are flexible enough to fit within your normal meal schedules.

Therefore, you can set your eating times based on your usual meal schedules. Since youre already used to that schedule, it will be much easier to follow. And youll be less likely to forget your eating times.

You should also choose eating times that youre comfortable with. For example, you may prefer having your first meal at 1 pm and your second meal at 8 pm.

The days of the week that you choose can also influence the success of your schedule.

Most experts recommend weekdays since youll typically focus on your everyday activities instead of thinking about food which can break your routine. However, you can select the days that work best for you, or simply settle for time-restricted eating.

Remember that lapses are normal.

If you break your routine, dont get disappointed and beat yourself up over it. You might just need to adjust your schedule to properly fit your specific situation, and youll easily get back on track.

Moreover, the BetterMe app is designed to provide multiple options from which you can select one that works for you. This can help you achieve the success you desire.

Youll find this option on the BetterMe app, and it happens to be the most popular and effective schedule.

The 16/8 intermittent fasting option can work in either of two ways:

Alternate-day fasting is only challenging on the days when you fast, since its coupled with normal eating days.

Many people who want to lose weight use this system. Its particularly beneficial to obese adults.

After a four-week period, youll experience an intense feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.

With this plan, you can fast during a 24-hour period either once a week or once a month.

Since its just one day of fasting in a week or month, its useful for someone who is new to intermittent fasting. Even though it suits beginners, it does have a major impact since youll significantly reduce your calorie intake.

During the 24-hour fast, you can eat dinner on Wednesday and stay without eating anything else until dinner on Thursday.

It requires a bit of mental toughness to go through the 24-hour fasting period. However, when you look at the bigger picture, its only 24 hours in a whole week or month. Plus, the BetterMe app can provide valuable resources to help you go through this routine.

Dom Sibley Reveals The Time He Felt The Need To Lose His Weight – Cricket Addictor

England batsman Dom Sibley has been one of the breakthrough cricketers for the national team, unearthed during the South African tour early this year. While he made his debut in November against New Zealand, Dom Sibley was amongst the runs in South Africa where he contributed significantly to Englands victory. Meanwhile, a few months ago, Sibley revealed to have felt about his growing weight and what motivated him to lose it.

It was during the eventually cancelled Sri Lankan tour slated to take place in March that was the motivation behind Dom Sibleys willingness to get fitter. During the visit for the two-Test series, the visitors played only two practice matches in which Sibley scored 14, 0, 37 before the tour was called off, owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

The Surrey batsman will now take part in the three-Test series against West Indies at home, commencing from the 8th of July.

The 24-year-old conceded that in Sri Lanka, it was the first time when he felt complex about his physique. Sitting on the plane, the right-handed batsman thought to himself; he needed to do something about it.

In Sri Lanka, for the first time in my career, I felt a little bit self-conscious about my physique and my weight. I just remember sitting on the plane and thinking, I need to do something, the 24-year old said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Sibley continued saying that watching Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Jos Buttler sweat it out in training drills in Colombo, it was an eye-opener. Dom Sibley aimed to adopt their work ethics, efforts, and the hard work that they put in and wants to do it consistently like them.

Ben Stokes is a bit of a freak when it comes to his training. Actually, it was seeing him, Root and Buttler running after a session in Colombo. I remember being absolutely spent so that was a real eye-opener. Seeing these guys and the graft they put in to stay at this level for the amount of time they have done, is something that I want to do, he maintained.

The English opening batsman went on to say that he did not lose the weight to improve his batting and asserted that his fitness has never affected it either. However, losing a few extra pounds will help him move in the field with more agility and survive longer on the ground with minimal injuries.

Dom Sibley will open the innings alongside Rory Burns in the forthcoming series, having played six Tests and scoring 362 runs alongside a century. The three-Test series marks the return of international cricket that has been on a halt for more than four months due to COVID-19 health crisis.

Ive never felt tired batting. My fitness has never affected my batting. Its not necessarily going to improve my batting. But it might help my agility in the field. And carrying less weight might keep me on the park for longer with fewer niggles,Sibley added.

Amazing Slimming World weight loss transformations in June – Plymouth Live

As we're coming out of lockdown, many of us are looking for ways to get fitter and shed some of pounds.

Whilst staying indoors and working from home, it was easy to grab yummy snacks from the fridge and order pizza and Indian takeaways, as there were no other options to eating out.

Plus, gyms, leisure centres and weight loss groups have been closed and a lot of classes and groups have been moved online, also adding to the difficulties of losing weight.

But despite this, some determined weight loss superstars have utilised their spare time to learn new recipes and cook from scratch, take up a new hobby or start exercising outdoors.

Some have even joined up to an online weight loss group for the first time.

So if you need some motivation, have a look at some of the incredible transformations below.

If you have an inspirational story to share, get in touch here.

A mother of five from Plymouth has shed a whopping six and a half stone, which has had a drastic effect on her mental health.

Just over a year ago, Jemma Jones was a "complete recluse" and tried to "hide" herself under baggy clothing, making every effort to avoid being seen by friends or family.

The 32-year-old said that she struggled with suicidal feelings as she was not happy with how she looked or felt about herself.

In January 2019, Jemma decided to start her health journey and joined Slimming World, in order to help her pass on healthy habits to her children.

She said: "I have five children and having them makes me all the more determined to succeed, along with teaching them nutritional values so they hopefully wont suffer with obesity."

Before joining the weight loss group, Jemma would gorge on take-aways and junk food and did not partake in any exercise, but now she sticks to plan and eats in moderation, but is not restricted to the food choices she makes.

She said: "If I can do it, anyone can. If you can dream it, you can do it.

"Its not just a diet, its a lifestyle and for me its a matter of self care.

"I eat everything in moderation. I dont do work outs as such but I am more able to walk a good distance and move around more freely."

Jemma attends Lauren Fidler's group every week in Mount Gould, and said that being around others who are on similar journeys as her keeps her motivated and inspired.

She said: "The best thing is hearing other people's success stories and believing in myself through the inspiration of others.

"I feel like I can achieve a goal that I set out and am slowly gaining more confidence and self belief."

Jemma has now overcome depression and credits it to her weight loss.

She added: "I've turned my life completely around, with a lot of determination I can honestly say I'm the happiest I've ever been.

"A year ago I was a complete recluse and tried to hide myself under baggy clothes hoping not to be seen, now I can wear a figure hugging dress and feel fabulous.

"I'm no longer the suicidal recluse i once was, I'm confident and happy.

"Group really does keep me going each week and offers me a lifeline during the lockdown."

A Plymouth teaching assistant has reached her goal weight during lockdown, despite obstacles in her way.

Tamsin Fleming has been at home on maternity leave with her two young children and was concerned about having "access to food all day long", but has found ways to keep herself on track.

The 30-year-old has been working her way through a vegetarian Slimming World recipe book, which not only keeps her busy, but has introduced tasty meals to her family.

Tamsin was pregnant for the majority of her Slimming World journey and has lost almost two stone.

She said: "I am astounded by how much Slimming World has helped me overcome my food obstacles and help me achieve what I set out to do.

"I was pregnant most of my Slimming World journey and this proved a lot better than I thought.

I gained 11.5lb in 9 months and lost 11lb my first week back!

"If I hadn't have stayed with the group, I would have gained a huge amount more and felt awful.

"Staying on plan, weighing in each week and pre-planning meals meant that I could still be in control of my eating whilst juggling what life had in store."

The mum-of-two said she consulted her midwife to check that she was allowed to continue sticking to her plan.

She said: "My midwife was happy for me to keep on plan as I wasn't losing weight rapidly and I was keeping healthy.

"Since having our daughter, I have tried to stick to healthy food and pre-plan weekly meals to help me keep on track.

"I have also joined the virtual SW group, allowing me to chat regularly with other members and my supportive consultant Tracy."

Tamsin admits it "hasn't been easy", but she has been "picked back up" by members on the virtual classes when she needs a boost.

She said: "They have helped me keep positive through the lockdown and pick myself back up when I have a gain. It hasn't been easy, especially through the lockdown and having two little children, but their support has been essential.

"Though there have been ups and downs, I still feel it was the best thing to do and couldn't be happier with my overall weight loss. It has also made me feel better since giving birth.

"I haven't had to try and lose a huge amount of weight whilst managing with a newborn, it would have added to the stress been detrimental to me. The number on the scales is smaller than it was, but also those non-scale victories have been important to me.

"I am able to walk more, have had to buy smaller jeans, can fit in dresses I haven't worn in years. Sometimes the visual things help you get yourself back on track too."

Tamsin now makes time to batch cook healthy food, instead of grabbing convenience snacks, which has also helped keep the weight off.

She said: "Before I started Slimming World, it was very easy to reach for snacks and convenience foods for dinners, but now I make the time around the children, to batch cook healthy food so we always have something to take out of the freezer.

"Always having fruit and vegetables to hand too has been helpful. I try and walk to work whenever I can, but since being on maternity and in lockdown, daily walks to feed the ducks with our daughters is as much as we can do!

"I would advise anyone to join Slimming World if they want to truly lose weight and maintain it. I am still shocked to see how my weight has dropped over the last year, and with being pregnant!

"It shows me that it really works and it was a worthwhile decision."

A retired Plymouth servicewoman has lost an incredible 2st 4.5lbs during lockdown, whilst self-isolating in South Wales with her father.

Nicola Thomas-Botwood moved to Wales to be with her father to care for him during the peak of the pandemic, which added extra difficulties to her weight loss.

But she set herself a target and smashed it, taking daily walks in the welsh mountains.

The 48-year-old even landed herself the gold body magic award and found the support from her friends and fellow members at Slimming World virtually, helped her reach her goal, even though she was in a different country.

She has even started running, which she found difficult in the beginning.

"Losing weight in lockdown was about thankfully having three things," she said.

"A daily routine, access to a local fruit and vegetable shop and living in a rural area with great walks, right from my doorstep.

"Staying on target meant giving myself new challenges such as body magic and then successfully starting to run distance, which I had never done in my life."

Nicola has now moved back home with her husband, which meant further challenges.

"Coming out of lockdown after I had reached my final target and moving back to live with my husband was challenging," she said.

"I had to adapt my routine, try to relax eating to not lose more weight and find new fitness challenges."

Nicola said she feels more positive about her health for the first time in years.

She said: "The best thing about my weight loss is the positive effect it has had on my health and stamina.

"After injury and illness leading to medical retirement, it is amazing ten years later to be this way.

"Thanks to Slimming World and all the support of my amazing group and husband, I have a real positive attitude to food and my shape."

A Plymouth mum feels better than ever after losing weight, which was prompted by an "idiot" who told her he did not date "fatties".

Karen Mayhew said she was aware that she had gained some weight, but she was given a "kick up the bum" after a man asked her what she weighed.

The 43-year-old instantly knew the man was an "idiot", but found that the comments gave her the motivation she needed to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle.

Now Karen, a mother-of-one, has lost a whopping 1st 9lbs and is well on her way to achieving her goal of 10st.

"I knew Id put on weight, but when a man told me he didnt date fatties after asking my weight, it gave me a kick up the bum," she said.

"I know he was a completely idiot but strangely it helped."

Karen then decided that she wanted to "lose weight, feel healthier and gain confidence", so took to Plymouth Gossip Girls to ask the best advice and tried-and-tested methods to shed some pounds.

Many people suggested joining Slimming World and dozens of people recommended Samantha Ball's group, who runs the Honicknowle meetings.

"I'm very happy now", she said.

"I'm determined and confident.

"I can now fit into some of my favourite clothes that I couldn't previously.

"I'm a clothes size smaller and I can now exercise for 30-40 minutes easily."

Karen said her heaviest weight, which is what she weighed when she first stepped foot into Samantha's group, was 12st 13lb.

She now weighs 11st 4lb and has hopes to reach a 10st target.

"I still have treats but now I understand how bad some can be, I find myself choosing better options," she said.

Before Karen's diet consisted of sweets, chocolate, paninis, lots of bread, takeaways, crisps, cheese, wine as well as Malibu and full-fat coke.

Now, Karen has switched her diet to include more fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs pasta and sugar free drinks.

Her 12-year-old son also eats the same meals as her and it has helped introduce healthier eating habits.

Shaun Sandell said he felt "ashamed and embarrassed" of how he looked after struggling with his weight for the last 13 years when he went to university.

At the beginning of the lockdown, the 32-year-old weighed 19st 10lbs and had a BMI of 37.8 and after seeing "countless news articles about how excess weight can lead to complications in the event of contracting coronavirus", he knew it was time to improve his health.

"I have a young family, a one-year-old and a four-year-old," he said.

"I became increasingly concerned about the impact that it may have on all of our lives.

"I was ashamed and embarrassed, but always put on a brave face and a bucket load of bravado. But in all honesty I was always very conscious of my size."

Shaun, from Southway, said he also enjoys holidaying with his family in Florida and did not want to worry about weight restrictions.

He said: "We love to holiday in Florida, and there are some rides where restraints can sometimes feel a little 'close'.

"I want to continue enjoying these."

When deciding to lose weight, Shaun called on his wife who has a degree in nutrition.

He said: "I made the decision to finally do something about my weight, but chose not to go down the Weight Watchers, Slimming World route and went solo.

"Well, my wife has a degree in nutrition, so she gave me some vital pointers. In a time where much of our liberties and privileges became much more restrictive, I made the decision to become much more active.

"I set myself a challenge of walking every day. I would walk seven to eight miles, pushing my youngest in the pushchair. I also started running, trying to hit 5 miles on a daily basis.

"Surprisingly, I found it remarkably easy and I completely changed my diet."

Shaun said he completely cut out chips and potatoes which he was eating with every meal and limited his bread intake to one or two slices maximum per week.

"The running and walking soon got easier and all of a sudden clothes started to become too big," he said.

"Now we find ourselves 13 weeks on from the start of lockdown and I now weigh 15st 9lbs, having hit 4 stone in weight loss in just 13 weeks."
