Year-in and year-out, photos of dandy bucks pop up on our phones at the tail end of the deer season.

Many of them wear tags because a lucky hunter, persistent and driven, happened to walk through the right clump of goldenrod in the middle of a field.

Or another big racker jumped into rifle range because a landowner decided to cut out a few Christmas trees behind the old barn.

Or then again, a woodcutter pulls out a seasoned top to cut and split for the woodpile ... buck jumps … and so on.

By the end of November many of these late season survivors have pretty much "gone nocturnal."

But this year is different.

Some will be caught away from their beds and sanctuaries because even though they know better, they cant help it because they are struck with another case of procreation fever.

Like the other waypoints along the whitetail rut timeline, this final rut spike doesnt happen every year at the same time on our calendars.

Though it's the same time on natures timepiece.

We say were having a late Thanksgiving.

Deer researchers attribute this late season diurnal (daytime) buck movement to a phase in the whitetail rut timeline typically called the "Post Rut."

The Post Rut is a bit of a misnomer, because deer are actually rutting then, but weeks after the first high point of the whitetail's breeding season.

Doeunable to conceivecycle again, along with about 30 percent of the doe fawns in this secondary rut window.

Bucks in a way "cycle" too.

A whitetail bucks' testosterone/pheromone production goes and comes in waves and troughs throughout the weeks of the rut.

According to science, whitetails, along with other related animals (Ungulates) are chained to photoperiodism.

Photoperiodism is a big word that conveys a basic concept. Light drives hormone/ pheromone flow and behavior - especially breeding.

How's that happen?

The whitetails pineal gland, behind the eyeball in their brain processes light. It's kind of like a timer. The shortening days of fall set the timer for does to ovulate. Buck testosterone levels increase too. And we all know it "takes two to tango."

Melatonin is identified as another key hormone too.

As the Full Moon waxes, and moonlight increases, a proportionate spike in melatonin ramps up in the whitetail. Then as the Full Moon wanes towards the dark of the moon or New Moon, testosterone- powered behavior comes to the fore.

Researchers have artificially skewed the breeding cycles of both bucks and does with injections of melatonin, taking a cue from livestock farmers who time breeding (short day breeders) such as goats and sheep with melatonin implants.

Deer do not decide when to breed.

They respond to changing light.

We all know that the "running time" or rut of the whitetail peaks every year in November in New York State, throughout the Northeast, and the Midwest.

But sometimes it peaks in the beginning of the month and sometimes almost at the end, and once in a while in the middle.

One could say that the moon fine-tunes the rut.

Nature doesn't like to put all its eggs in one basket.

So a few doecycle in October. And some bucks are ready to go then too. We call that the Pre-Rut or Silent Estrus.

We see scrapes and rubs appearing almost overnight and we excitedly call it the beginning of the rut.

And in that magical window of time is the ethereal moment we dream about, even though it differs from one hollow one day, to another ridge on maybe the following day.

Peak rut lasts about two weeks, this year under the rare Blue moon.

Quickly, and just a few weeks later, after a mid-November lull, the cycle repeats one more time - and that's second prong of the rut, this year the key waypoint is around Thanksgiving.

Next year, during the beginning of our archery season we will perhaps take note of a spotted fawn.

Fawns typically hit the ground in May and by fall, have already lost their spots.

These tiny spotted fawns in October next year during archery season will be born four to six weeks later than the rest of their age class.

Mid-June and early July fawns are the products and proof of this final rut peak we are hunting, late November, this year, around Thanksgiving week.

John McTiernan's Predator is a classic, but it's also over-the-top, ridiculous, and ripe with things that make very little sense.

John McTiernan's Predator revitalized the sci-fi movie monster during a particularly creative decade. Not only did it give audiences a glimpse at one of the coolest aliens ever designed, but it also kicked off a franchise that has stood on its own, while crossing over with 20th Century Fox's seminal Alien universe.

Predator fans know that the movie is over-the-top, unrealistic, and (oftentimes) ridiculous, and that's part of the fun. Still, it would be a sin not to point out some things that just don't make any sense, even for a chill-out popcorn action/horror flick like Predator.

John McTiernan obviously wanted that infamous double-bicep shot in Predator, and for good reason. After all, this was a manly man's action movie, loaded with enough testosterone to give a Cornish Rex facial hair. It would have been silly for Dillon and Dutch to walk towards each other, sit down at a table and arm wrestle - hence the classic mid-air competition.

In truth, this would be nearly impossible given the lack of any surface for leverage. At best, Dillon's arm would have been shoved off to one side, rather than arcing downwards. Still, it's a scene that everyone remembers, and that's the most important thing.

The opening of the film establishes Dutch and his crew getting the scoop on a mission to rescue hostages from an armed guerrilla force, but there's no exposition or briefing to be seen. Instead, Dillon decides to go with the team as a fifth wheel who just so happens to know the full details; or so Dutch thinks.

Dillon decides to wait until the helicopters are beyond the halfway point to the drop-off before sharing some details about the op with Dutch. This includes a no-backup rule, which Dutch can't help but feel dismayed about. It makes no sense for them to get so far into the first stage of the mission with a seat-of-the-pants briefing.

To show off Arnold Schwarzenegger's predictable and stereotypical movie moments, a scene was devised where Dutch plants explosives on a propped up truck acting as a generator and rolls it down a hill. The truck hits its target and explodes, creating enough chaos for the team to start mowing down their targets one by one.

The obvious question is why the guerrilla sitting next to the truck failed to see Dutch standing right behind him, which would have been anyone's first instinct. Instead, he goes right after the truck with Dutch standing there in full view, with no cover.

The entire purpose of Dutch's mission was to infiltrate the guerrilla compound and save supposed hostages, which doesn't make any sense when the firing starts. The team kicks things off by firing indiscriminately in every direction while pumping grenades into buildings.

Yes, McTiernan crafted one amazing action sequence, but it makes little sense seeing as how Dutch and his team had no clue where the hostages were being held. After witnessing one being executed just minutes prior to the attack, they could have been right there in the line of fire.

This nonsensical plot device was done purely on purpose, and even the director admitted it. The idea of Blain carrying a massive helicopter mini-gun into the Central American jungle is cool for the sake of cool, even if it defies all logic.

Still, this particular mini-gun weighs a ridiculous amount, especially factoring in the ammo. Plus, it requires an electrical power source to run. Still, the movie would not have been as iconic had it not been for "Old Painless" and its special brand of jungle-chewing destructive capabilities.

The Predator's entire lifestyle and culture are built around the hunt, and its arrival on Earth meant that it was seeking the most dangerous prey on the planet to slaughter in a particularly brutal fashion. That would have included the guerrilla forces Dutch and his team were sent in to neutralize, but for some reason, they are left untouched.

This makes no sense, especially since the film establishes that a previous spec-ops team was wiped out prior to Dutch's arrival. Why the Predator seems to target only U.S. military personnel while leaving cold-blooded guerillas alive is anyone's guess.

Dutch and his team might have been the best in the business, but their true talent was keeping their uniforms squeaky clean and in pristine condition under even the harshest of conditions. At least, that's how it appears in the film.

After slogging through the jungle and engaging in a brutal firefight with guerrilla forces, none of the team looks worse for wear. Their military outfits look like they came fresh out of the washing machine with barely a speck of dirt on any of them. Surely they'd be a filthy mess in relatively short order.

After the deaths of several of Dutch's team, the remaining survivors begin rigging the jungle with traps in an effort to lay enough groundwork for an even fight. They do so in broad daylight, which presumably takes many hours of hard, noticeable labor.

This would beg the question as to why the Predator wasn't watching them the entire time and studying their tactics. Yes, it would have been better to make moves than do nothing and wait to be picked off, but surely this seasoned, deadly Predator wouldn't have allowed his quarry to go unwatched for such a prolonged period of time.

After his entire team is slaughtered, Dutch decides to make a stand in the jungle and go toe-to-toe with the alien trophy hunter using nothing but his survival skills. He begins laying a series of traps to prepare for another round with the creature on more even footing.

Somehow, Dutch is so good that he creates a makeshift recurve bow out of common jungle materials that is so strong, an arrow can pierce a massive tree and emerge out the other side. This might be cool, but it's patently ridiculous.

The first Predator film establishes that the creature's mask acts as a sort of infrared filtration unit designed to highlight living things while dampening the heat of the surrounding jungle. When the mask is removed, the creature sees the fully unfiltered spectrum, which is jarring, to say the least.

This might have been so the Predator could level the playing field against a worthy opponent, but it doesn't explain how these creatures which are drawn to heat and conflict ever managed to crawl their way up the evolutionary ladder long enough to craft technology that made them see better. Also, this plot device would never be brought up again in subsequent sequels.

It also causes the uterus to atrophy, often painfully, which may necessitate a hysterectomy.

Some of the changes to her body will be irreversible, and likely to cause distress if she changes her mind. If she has taken puberty-blockers as well as testosterone she may well be infertile. Only a few months of testosterone may have altered her voice and given her a lifelong five oclock shadow. Fortunately for such girls, bottom surgerya phalloplastyis so often problematic that few request it.

All this, coupled with the fact that adolescence is confusing at the best of times, might suggest that teenagers should, by and large, be discouraged from embarking on biomedical gender reassignment. That is the argument running through Irreversible Damage, a book by Abigail Shrier, a journalist. It is not one that holds much sway in America. As the number of transgender clinics has grown from one in 2007 to at least 50 today, so has the number of young patients in them. Once they were mostly boys; today they are girls. Ms Shrier argues that many are victims of an ideology which holds that the feeling of being in the wrong body must be affirmed at all costs. It has fuelled a craze, she writes, to which teenage girls are particularly susceptible.

Irreversible Damage is full of stories from the mostly white, privileged world in which this seems to have flourished. Teenagers, often awkward and anxious, who have lost themselves in an online world that lionises anyone who identifies as trans. YouTubers, who extol the glories of testosterone as if it were a protein shake and dismiss parents who are sceptical of trans-identification as toxic. Teachers, who do not tell parents that their child is going by a different name at school. The group she reports on in greatest detail is parents. Many of them come across as hapless. Apparently unable to tell their children that feelings of pain and confusion, especially in adolescence, are part of life and usually pass, they instead hope therapists will sort everything out.

Ms Shrier is damning of some of the professionals who have built careers working with trans-identifying children. She points out that this is the only medical field apart from cosmetic surgery in which both diagnosis and treatment are determined by the patient. She describes doctors and therapists (who would ordinarily consider it their job to challenge their patients assumptions) bowing to the judgment of vulnerable teenagers. They also, grievously, tell parents who do not accept that their daughters are boys that failing to affirm their identity may heighten the risk of suicide (research does not back this up).

Data on transgender medical interventions are poorno one knows how many teenagers have transitionedand one wonders at times if Ms Shrier may have become so steeped in the phenomenon that she exaggerates its reach. But she tells the stories of those she interviews with great care. She writes empathetically about the distress of gender dysphoria, the relentless chafe of a body that feels all wrong, and the experience of adults who have transitioned (a group that has long suffered discrimination). She quotes her interviewees at such length that it would be hard to claim she has misrepresented them.

Yet despite this the book has been denounced as transphobic. This month, a prominent lawyer from the American Civil Liberties Union tweeted, from his personal account, that stopping the circulation of this book and these ideas is 100% a hill I will die on. A professor of English literature at Berkeley suggested that people should steal the book and burn it. Few mainstream newspapers have reviewed it, though it is one of the first accessible treatments of a subject that has generated much fascinated coverage.

This is a clear illustration of what the book claims: the dominance of an ideology that brooks no dissent or debate. One of the most shocking episodes it describes concerns Lisa Littman, a medical doctor and researcher at Brown University, who noted in a paper in 2018 that most transgender children were teenage girls with no history of gender dysphoria. Many of the teenagers in her study had been exposed to peers who had come out as trans shortly before doing so themselves; a majority had spent more time on the internet. The study sparked a bullying campaign, which prompted Brown to publish an apology, though the papers findings never changed. She was fired from another job as a consultant.

In Irreversible Damage Ms Shrier describes meeting Dr Littman and wondering out loud about the cultural factors that might be causing so many American girls to want to become boys. She is impressed when Dr Littman refuses to theorise beyond the limits of her data. This punctilious respect for the facts had threatened to destroy her career.

Q: Is it okay for a man to have low levels of testosterone?

Decreasing levels of testosterone is often part of the ageing process, so its relatively common in older men.

However, testosterone deficiency can occur at any age due to conditions affecting the testicles, or the pituitary gland in the brain.

In adult males, testosterone deficiency can cause fatigue, infertility, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, hot flashes, decreased muscle mass, development of breast tissue and loss of bone density.

Some describe it as the male menopause (but not in front of their wives for fear of retaliation).

A decrease in testosterone is usually a gradual process, so many men just assume their symptoms are a result of aging, and dont seek help.

If you have a deficiency, you can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy, however, the cause needs to be treated as well.

Too much testosterone can also be a problem.

It is uncommon to have high testosterone levels naturally, but this can be caused by adrenal or testicular tumours.

More often than not, high levels of testosterone are seen in people using anabolic steroids or prescription testosterone obtained illegally.

The symptoms may include heart or liver problems, high blood pressure, acne, aggression, infertility, insomnia, prostate enlargement and unexplained weight gain.

So in summary, we need to find the happy medium between too little or too much testosterone.

All those new moustaches you see in Movember are most likely due to normal testosterone levels, provided its not on a woman.
