Tennessee’s Chemical Castration Bill Shows Local Republicans Have One Thing on Their Minds – The Nation

Early this month, Representative Bruce Griffey of western Tennessees 75th district made public his latest effort to control and degrade the states most vulnerable: a bill that would require any person convicted of sex offenses against a minor under the age of 13 to undergo chemical castration upon becoming eligible for parole.Ad Policy

Convicts will be responsible for the cost of the intervention, and halting it would be considered a parole violation, sending the parolee immediately back to jail to serve the rest of their sentence. Proponents justify the invasive law on the pretext of protecting the children of Tennessee from potential predators.

Chemical castration reduces the bodys sexual urges with drugs or hormones. Unlike surgical castration, it is reversible, but it isnt harmless. Critics claim the practice violates fundamental civil liberties, like the right to ones own thoughts and to bodily autonomy, and note that the commission of a crime, no matter how serious, does not strip a person of their essential rights.

If you have a penis, imagine a life without the possibility of erection or orgasm. No more yearning, no more physical intimacy, no more pleasant daydreams. For someone whos supposed to have paid their debt to society, this is unnecessarily cruel.Related Article

The treatment is not without considerable health risk, either. Long-term use carries the potential for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, impaired glucose metabolism, and more everyday side effects like gynecomastia, hot flashes, and depression. Though some small-scale studies have found modest decreases in recidivism with chemical castration, no randomized control trials have been conducted.

Its not the first time a Republican legislator has displayed excessive interest in the genitals of his constituents. Griffey is also currently cosponsoring a bill that would require Tennessee students to play sports on teams appropriate to the gender noted on their birth certificates, a transparent attempt to curtail the rights of transgender and gender-nonconforming kids. Schools that refuse to follow the rule would lose public funding.

And in June of last year, Alabama enacted a law nearly identical to Griffeys chemical castration proposal, joining Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Montana, Wisconsin, and California, which passed the first such measure in the United States in 1996, under Republican Governor Pete Wilson.Current Issue

Following Indonesias push in 2016 to introduce the punishment for sex offenders, Amnesty International released a statement about the practice noting that forced chemical castration is a violation of the prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment under international law. The ACLU has come out against the practice as well.

In the United States, such statutes may face legal challenges, largely on the basis of their dubious constitutionality. A 2003 analysis in The Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry Law notes several grounds for potential disputes: under the First Amendment, for attempting to control the content of a persons mind, or fantasies; the Eighth Amendment, as cruel and unusual punishment; and the 14th Amendment, for failing to honor the guarantee of due process, and infringing on fundamental liberties, such as the liberty to have children. The measures may also violate the equal protection clause, since, although their language is gender-nonspecific, the actual effects of the drugs disproportionately affect men.

It is a return, if you will, to the dark ages, said Randall Marshall, executive director of the ACLU of Alabama, of that states law.

Chemical castration has a brutal, bigoted, and ableist history. Before the technology existed for a chemical intervention, eugenics movements embraced castration and sterilization as ways to prevent undesirable populationsfor instance, criminals and mentally ill peoplefrom procreating, in 19th century America. Beginning in the 1940s, diethylstilbestrol or DES was used to lower testosterone levels in men with pathological sexual behavior. In 1966, Dr. John Money, famous for his wrongheaded (and in some cases, fatal) views on gender assignment at birth, prescribed a man struggling with pedophilic fantasies medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), the active ingredient in the hormonal contraceptive Depo-Provera, and the drug used in most states that have chemical castration laws for sex offenders. (MPA is not approved for this usage by the FDA, and was abandoned in Europe because of its severe side effects.)

Hormone treatment, used as a corrective punishment in place of prison for the crime of homosexuality, has been widely blamed for the suicide of renowned computer scientist Alan Turing (Turing was forced to take DES). In 2012, a doctor in Sydney was banned from practicing medicine after prescribing chemical castration as a cure for his 18-year-old patients homosexuality.

Despite its checkered past, some choose hormone therapy of their own volition to curb troubling sexual thoughts or behaviors, and reduce sexual urges. The Cut published an interview in 2015 with a 62-year-old man voluntarily taking Lupron (generic leuprolide), which dramatically decreases the pituitary glands production of testosterone; the man says that it, combined with regular psychotherapy, ended his destructive pattern of compulsive sex with prostitutes and saved his marriage.

Another ethical thorn jabs the doctor assigned to give the hormone-limiting drugs. Can a physician administering this kind of treatment really obtain informed consent? Isnt the measure inherently coercive, if its a condition of parole? In medical ethics, a vulnerable population cannot consent to a procedure not explicitly performed for their benefitand it would require a leap of logic to claim involuntary hormone treatment is strictly beneficial. Incarcerated persons are a uniquely vulnerable group, with little to no power of self-determination, whose bodily integrity Tennessee already has an abysmal track record of respecting. Subjecting them to this humiliating practice as a condition of reentry into society further deprives them of their humanity.

That kind of cowboy approach to public safety is par for the course for Representative Griffey, who has already made a name for himself in his brief yet storied tenure in the Tennessee legislature. He has pushed for other demeaning aspects of the national Republican agenda as well. In March of last year, he filed a bill that would restrict welfare benefits in Tennessee only to those who could prove United States citizenship, including, per the bills abstract, each applicant 18 years of age or older, who applies for prenatal care administered by the department of health and the special supplemental food program for women, infants and children administered by the department of health. The bill ultimately failed, evidently considered too heartless even for Republicans.

Griffeys ire isnt confined to poor, pregnant women. He also introduced a bill this month, along with state Senator Joey Hensley, that would subject resettlement of refugees in Tennessee to the approval of both local governments and the state legislature, a two-step process clearly designed to hinder resettlementthis after Governor Bill Lee recently agreed to statewide resettlements for the second year in a row.

In the realm of personal ethics, Griffey is in no position to play the moral police. In September of last year, he was revealed to have engaged in backdoor dealings that led to the resignation of a Carroll County attorney, Jennifer King, so that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee could appoint Griffeys wife, Rebecca, in her place (which he declined to do). It turned out that one of the reasons Rebecca Griffey was not selected may have been her claim to the interview panel that a tax lien had not been placed on the Griffeys home, despite documents provided by the IRS that showed the couple had failed to pay $240,060 in 2015 and $23,030 in 2016.

When contacted, Representative Griffeys office declined to comment for this story.

Even among Tennessee Republicans, Griffey is certainly a figure in state government to keep tabs onand to thwart at every turn, at least for anyone who wants to keep politicians roving hands out of their metaphorical pants.

Trans Men Don’t Have to Choose Between Transitioning and Having Kids – VICE

A new study, published in medical journal Fertility and Sterility in November 2019, found that trans men have no more trouble getting pregnant via assisted reproductive technology than their cis woman counterparts do, even trans men who had already begun taking testosterone. In an interview with Medscape Medical News on Tuesday, one of the co-authors of the study said she hopes her teams findings encourage trans men and their providers to feel more empowered to seek out fertility options post-transition, if they wish.

"Transmales [sic lmao] worry that they've thrown in the towel, and by committing to testosterone have started on a pathway with no return, but these data suggest they still have options," Resetkova told Medscape.

While this might be the first formal study to show that trans men can still conceive via assisted reproductive technology, even after starting HRT, previously 'moned-up trans men having babies is nothing new. That aspect of this news is not all that surprisingat least not for anyone whos spent enough time around trans people to know that trans men can and often do get pregnant. To echo what journalist Katelyn Burns wrote in a 2018 them story about trans women and breastfeeding: Whats more surprising is that it took this long for a medical journal to document the process.

Its important to note that all the trans men on hormones who participated in the Fertility and Sterility study stopped their HRT while trying to conceive. Resetkova and her co-authors dont rule out the possibility of trans men conceiving while continuously taking testosterone, though further investigation needs to be performed. Community knowledge tells me that conception under those circumstances is unlikely, but who knowsIm not a doctor. All I know is that assisted reproductive technology sounds really expensive and probably extremely cost-prohibitive for the vast majority of trans men who might want to make use of it.

The Signs a Testosterone Booster is Needed – Science Times

Staff ReporterJan 22, 2020 07:57 PM EST

As people age, their bodies start to change. This includes issues related to hormones. One of the most common hormonal issues that men face has to do with low testosterone, also called low T. As a common male health issue, there are many people who would like help addressing this issue. For those who would like to learn more, read more about testo boosters and some of the signs of low T.

One of the most common signs that someone has low levels of testosterone is sexual dysfunction. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone and controls factors such as libido and the ability to both achieve and sustain an erection that is suitable for intercourse. When someone has low levels of testosterone, they are going to notice issues with their reproductive system. Men will notice that they just don't "feel" like having sex. Their libido has dropped due to a lack of testosterone. They will also notice that they don't have spontaneous erections like they used to. This can be incredibly frustrating and can lead to serious mental health issues. Therefore, the issues of low testosterone need to be addressed.

Next, men with low testosterone are going to notice that they don't have as much lean muscle mass as they used to. Testosterone plays a key role in someone's ability to put on lean muscle by working out. Even though someone puts in the hours at the gym and eats a healthy, well-balanced diet, they just can't seem to put on the same amount of lean muscle they used to. One of the possible reasons why is that someone has low testosterone. Testosterone is required for the body to respond to the stimulus produced by working out regularly. Without testosterone, lean muscle is not going to stick.

In addition, another common sign of low testosterone is hair loss. Testosterone is responsible for keeping hair follicles healthy and full. If someone has low levels of testosterone, people may notice bald spots starting to appear on the scalp. Hair may also fall out when someone uses a comb or brush. Finally, men may also notice more hair on the floor of the shower. Addressing low testosterone can help someone prevent hair loss.

Finally, one of the most important signs of low testosterone is reduced bone mass. Bones are made up of a calcium network that gives bones their strength and durability. Without testosterone, the bones are going to start to weaken. While this might lead to pain and discomfort, it may also cause someone to be more susceptible to bone fractures. This presents a serious health complication that might land someone in the hospital. In order to avoid this, those who have low testosterone need to make sure this problem is treated.

Anyone who thinks they might have low testosterone should know that there are treatment options available. This comes in the form of testosterone boosters. This is a great way for someone to restore their testosterone levels back to normal. Then, they can enjoy life just as they did during their younger years.

To Your Good Health | Timing and food can be important in effectiveness of Viagra – Kilgore News Herald

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are very fortunate to have had a happy relationship for many years. Our lovemaking has always been a pleasure for both of us. Now, we have to add Viagra to the mix. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesnt, which is a disappointment to both of us. Is there anything we can do to enhance its effectiveness? Or is there something else you can recommend that would do what we wish Viagra would do consistently? Anon.

ANSWER: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar medicines have been very effective treatment for many men who have difficulty achieving and maintaining adequate erections for sexual intercourse. However, they are not effective for all men, and many people have a misunderstanding about how they work.

Most importantly, Viagra does not increase libido, the desire for sexual contact, in men or women. It works by changing the way blood flows in and out of the penis. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by circulation problems such as blockages in the arteries; neurological problems; endocrine problems, especially low testosterone; and relationship issues. Viagra helps to some extent for men with any of these problems, but its worth reconsidering whether there is an underlying medical issue going on, both before prescribing it and periodically while taking it, especially if it doesnt seem to be working as well.

Still, oftentimes the problem with Viagra working intermittently is that it is affected by food, which many men dont appreciate fully. Food slows down absorption of the medication, making the optimal time of administration more difficult to determine. I have often repeated the advice I heard from a urologist: Take Viagra at 6, have dinner at 7, and you are good until midnight. Viagra does become progressively less effective in some men, requiring higher doses to have the same results. Or, your husband could switch to one of the other Viagra-like drugs, which have greater flexibility with timing and food. They work better for some men.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old male in good health except for a low testosterone count of 109 on a recent test. I am wondering about the benefits and risks of therapy. I have read that injection can lead to very high and then very low counts, but the patch can be potentially dangerous to my spouse. Can you clarify these issues for me? A.D.

ANSWER: Testosterone is an important hormone for men and women, although men have much higher levels. It has many critical functions. This includes promoting bone and muscle strength, and generally favorable effects on blood cholesterol types and levels. Plus, it is necessary for healthy sexual function.

Although very high levels of testosterone, such as those taken illegally by athletes, are associated with significant risks, replacement of testosterone in a man with low levels and symptoms of low testosterone has not been shown to be risky, and most evidence suggests an overall benefit from getting the testosterone back into the normal range. There are oral forms, injection and transdermal (patch and gel) formulations. Early injections showed problems with high levels after the injection followed by low, but there are better formulations to minimize that risk. Most men now prefer the gels or patches, which tend to have pretty consistent levels.

Women and children should not handle the medication directly. Your spouse is at low risk if you wash your hands carefully after application and avoid skin contact until it has dried completely, such as by wearing clothing. You should avoid getting the area of application (usually the shoulder) wet for five hours after application.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu or send mail to 628 Virginia Dr., Orlando, FL 32803.

ANOTHER VIEWPOINT: Bill seeks to ensure fairness in girls’ sports – Daily Journal

Fort Wayne News-Sentinel

The premise is that female sports are endangered because of the new reality that females may be forced to compete against biological males who claim to be female an unfair biological advantage.

An Indiana House bill introduced by Rep. Christy Stutzman, R-Middlebury (wife of former 3rd District Congressman Marlin Stutzman), would prohibit any biological boy who says he is a girl from competing in sports against a girl in the public schools.

HB 1088, the Fair Play for Female Sports Act is reportedly being held up for a committee assignment. It comes on the heels of a recent study that matches seemingly obvious truths about the common advantages of biological males in sports.

A December story by the Alliance Defending Freedom reported that a study by three New Zealand scholars published in the Journal of Medical Ethics concludes biological males possess physiological, and therefore performance, advantages over biological females in sports.

The story says the studys authors address the fairness of International Olympic Committee guidelines, which allow men who identify as women to compete in womens sports if they have a certain level of testosterone.

Those male athletes are permitted to have a testosterone level nearly six times higher than that of a normal healthy female.

Besides the obvious unfairness of this trend, according to an article by the Indiana Family Institute, such a policy also creates additional barriers for women who want to win a championship, use athletics to earn a scholarship to college or compete on the world stage.

Bottom line: the three scholars say the trendy issue of inclusion does not trump the importance of fairness for female athletes.

But the study wont mollify the critics. Gender identity ideology denies basic biological realities and common sense.

The Alliance Defending Freedom points out that the American Civil Liberties Union insists there is no research to support the conclusion that men who identify as women competing in womens sports maintain a competitive advantage.

Meanwhile, an article on lgbtqnation.com states, While the LGBTQ and international sports communities are still learning more about the science behind trans competitors, bills like Stutzmans treat trans female athletes like unstoppable competitors when in reality trans athletes often lose, just like their cis counterparts. (Cis, or cisgender, is a term for those whose gender identity matches the sex they were born with.)

The article goes on to quote Stutzmans Facebook post about her bill in which she wrote, Support the cause of protecting the integrity of female sports . . . We must protect the opportunities and scholarships of our hardworking female athletes in junior high and high school!

In that post, Stutzman included a link to the article by the Alliance Defending Freedom, which lgbtqnation.com says has been designated by the controversial Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-LGBTQ hate group.

But we maintain science and common sense outweigh the nonsense that disregards the biological differences between men and women. And we think Stutzmans bill, whether it makes any progress in the Indiana Legislature or not, is merely an attempt to protect the existence of female-only sports and the opportunities for female athletes in junior high and high school in Indiana.

Lower testosterone, long journeys or overheated dressing rooms? Why is it harder to win away from home? – The Athletic

I do think there is a psychological aspect at play, explains one former Premier League manager. It is on everyone involved in the game, almost expecting a good result when you play at home and perhaps a more out-of-your-hands result when you play away from home.

Home advantage is one of footballs most widely embraced notions and, indeed, the statistics back up the theories. Since its foundation in 1992, 10,725 Premier League fixtures have taken place and 46 per cent have resulted in home wins, compared to 28 per cent ending in away victories. Before this weekends latest round of results in the 2019-20 season, Europes top five leagues of England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France posted 45 per cent home wins and 31 per cent away victories.

And yet, why is it, in a sport increasingly blessed by consistent conditions luxury travel, pristine pitches, monitored sleep, controlled nutrition, identical footballs that home...

‘Sister Wives’: Kody’s Kids Cringe As He Talks About His ‘Testosterone’ and Having More Children – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Kody Brown of TLCs Sister Wives might already have a whopping 18 children with his four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn, but it looks like he might still be open to more.

On the Jan. 19 episode of Sister Wives, Four Wives, One House, the 51-year-old polygamist patriarch shocked some of his family members by admitting that he didnt know if he was completely done with having kids.

When Kody drew up the plans for his dream home, which would include all of his four wives under one roof, he admitted he was leaving room for the potential of even more little ones. Kody and his 41-year-old fourth wife Robyn are the only Brown couple still preparing for the possibility of additional kids.

The Sister Wives star told producers that he believed he was done with having more biological kids, but he wasnt completely sure. I realize that Im 50 and so by the time Ariella [his youngest daughter] is done being my little girl, that Ill be 70.

He added that he wasnt sure whether it was his ego talking or a real desire for more kids that made him want to keep that door open. You know, I was either looking forward to being a father or a father for the past 35 years, he explained. And Im worried that its sort of a detachment to my ego, that its maybe just what I do so I want to keep doing it. Its a weird thought that I am not going to have any more kids.

Robyn agreed, saying she wasnt completely ready to close herself off to the possibility of adding more children into the Brown family. To be honest, some of the kids have been jerks about their dad and him having kids and stuff like that, Kodys youngest wife said. And its like, hes trying to say, Im young enough to have more kids if I want to.

At a Christmas Eve presentation with many of the Sister Wives kids and all four wives, Kody revealed his plans for a massive one-family home. Along the way, he let it slip that he wasnt sure there wouldnt be more Brown kids to come.

A lot of people, a lot of my peers, are looking forward to an empty nest. Ive never been that person, Kody told his family during the presentation. Im constantly debating with myself if Aris the last or not.

The room fell into a surprised hush as some of the adult kids and other wives wondered if there might be a new baby coming along.

Second wife Janelles daughter Maddie Brown Brush (who has two kids of her own now), exclaimed in response, Youre debating if Aris the last or not? Different subject, different subject, her husband Caleb Brush said, trying to ease the tension.

Do you see, Ive got a washboard stomach, sweetheart, Kody shot back. Thats from testosterone, I promise you.

Oh my god! Maddie exclaimed as the room exploded in uncomfortable laughter, partly due to the TMI implications about Kodys ongoing sex life.

Christines daughter Aspyn Brown Thompson, who recently married Mitch Thompson, cried out, Im not listening anymore!

I hope you stay in your cabin! another daughter joked.

On a more serious note, Robyn explained that she and Kody tried to make decisions about more children based on spiritual guidance. The fundamentalist Mormon family believes that children are born because souls in heaven are trying to come earthside.

Kody and I are always trying to make sure that our family is complete and that there isnt some sweet little spirit in heaven, waiting to be born into our family, the Sister Wives star told TLC producers. We just want to make sure that Ari really, truly is the last of our family.

Still, Robyn wasnt entirely happy about Kody spilling details about their pillow talk to the rest of the family. But I dont know what to do with the idea of him sitting here talking about it in front of everybody on Christmas Eve with this house, she admitted. I dont know what to do with this right now.

Doctors seek couples to test male birth control gel – and they’ll get paid 3,000 – Mirror Online

In news that will come as music to the ears of many women, scientists have developed a male birth control gel - and theyre looking for volunteers to test it out.

Researchers at the University of Kansas have developed the gel, and are seeking willing couples to try it.

The clear gel needs to be applied to the mans shoulders every day for two years, where its absorbed into the skin.

Couples will be paid $4,000 (3,063) in compensation to try it, although they must be willing to have a baby in case the gel fails.

The gel, called NES/T is expected to be more effective than condoms, but can cause a range of side effects, including acne and weight gain, according to the researchers.

It contains two hormones. The first hormone, progestin, naturally blocks the action of testosterone, keeping the testes from producing sperm.

Meanwhile, the second hormone, testosterone, ensures that the mans levels are normal, preventing side effects such as low sex drive, mod changes and erectile dysfunction.

According to the researchers, the gel is 90% effective - roughly 3% more reliable than condoms.

Thankfully, these effects are reversible within three to four months.

For the trial, men will be paid $2,985 (2,286) to visit the clinic 31 times over two years, while their partner will receive $1,140 (873) for visiting 10 times.

Overall, the researchers are seeking 420 couples, including at centres in Edinburgh, Manchester, Los Angeles, Washington, Italy and Sweden.

Further details about the clinical trial can be found here .
