New Sask. exercise program to target seniors

REGINA A fitness program designed specifically for older adults is being rolled out across the province.

Named Forever ... In Motion, the program has proven successful in Saskatoon and is now being spearheaded by the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism and Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.

Holly Schick, executive director of Sask. Seniors Mechanism, said Forever ... In Motion can prove useful for those with chronic diseases or mobility issues.

It can often be difficult to find exercise programs that take into consideration the needs of that group, including adapting exercises to make them safe and appropriate for people with particular health concerns, she said.

The idea, Schick said, is to train a group of people, who can then train others.

The program will then be offered at community centres, church halls, congregate housing and sports facilities in urban centres and rural locations.

Exercise is one of the most effective ways of ... improving life and reducing health care costs, Schick said.

This is a way to ensure fitness opportunities are affordable and accessible and appropriate for everyone.

The first training day will be held on Nov. 14 at the Delta Hotel in Regina.
