Aqua fitness is 'just as good' as land workouts, researchers say

Aqua fitness is a hot trend, especially in Europe and in LA and NY, and now researchers say that underwater bicycling, jogging and elliptical training are "just as good" as doing the same exercise on land.

"If you can't train on land, you can train in the water and have the same benefits in terms of improving aerobic fitness," says lead researcher Dr. Martin Juneau, director of prevention at the Montreal Heart Institute. The study is being presented Tuesday at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Vancouver.

In the study, 33 healthy subjects pedaled on cycling machines both on land and in pools, increasing their intensity minute by minute until exhaustion. The maximal oxygen consumption, which Juneau notes is a good indicator of whether or not you're getting a good workout, was almost the same using both types of cycles. But interestingly, the heart rate of the aqua cyclists was a bit lower.

"You pump more blood for each beat, so don't need as many heartbeats, because the pressure of the water on your legs and lower body makes the blood return more effectively to the heart," adds Juneau.

While swimming is one of the best workouts, some find it challenging. Aqua fitness workouts make a good alternative, since the low stress of moving in the water reduces the chance of injury, he adds.

However, Juneau adds that more research needs to be done to confirm the results, as well as test to see if the effect holds true for older and overweight exercisers.
