CLARINGTON -- The Clarington Fitness Centre could be saved from the threat of being closed with an application to a federal funding program.

"There is a small but dedicated group of users at the fitness centre," said Mayor Adrian Foster.

The fitness centre, on Liberty Street next to Bowmanville High School, houses a pool and squash courts. Clarington council held a special summer meeting on Monday, Aug. 13 to approve the application for up to $1 million of federal funding through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

Without the federal support, in a few years the municipality would face a "tough decision", according to the mayor. With plans for a new recreation centre in south Bowmanville, it's entirely possible the small fitness centre would have to be closed.

"(The fitness centre) is great. It's a little bit chilly today," said Maria Moreno, who brings her granddaughters, 9 and 7, to the pool every day for swimming lessons. "I understand in the public (swim) time it's busy."

The federal funding would give the fitness centre a "much needed facelift" and extend the life of the facility by 20 years.

"The facility is definitely in need of an overhaul so I definitely look forward to this," said Councillor Corinna Traill.

The Clarington Fitness Centre opened in January 1981. Since then the municipality has opened two other pools, one in Courtice and one in Newcastle. The Courtice and Newcastle pools tend to be more popular because they have more modern amenities, including family changing rooms, adequate public viewing, water slides, a leisure pool tank and tot pool teaching area.

Over the years, the number of users at the Clarington Fitness Centre pool has declined.

However, the fitness centre has two courts and is home to the Clarington Squash Club, which has seen significant growth over the last four years. The municipality would like to add another court.
