Fairfield police investigate vehicle break-ins at YMCA, Planet Fitness – Hamilton Journal News

FAIRFIELD

Someone stole a credit card from a vehicle parked in the Fairfield YMCA lot Thursday afternoon, but similar thefts have also happened a half-mile away at Planet Fitness.

Police are investigating the thefts, but they cant confirm if they are connected at this time, said Fairfield police Officer Doug Day.

Theyre opportunists, said Day. Take away the opportunity, you dont have a crime.

Investigators cannot identify yet the suspect, or suspects, responsible for the Planet Fitness thefts surveillance footage acquired was not usable but Day said the suspect in a black SUV waited before acting.

In the YMCA theft, they sat and waited for someone and they struck, he said.

Theft is the top crime in Fairfield with thefts from vehicles ranking as No. 2 among crimes in Fairfield. The top crime in the city is shoplifting.

In 2016, there were 273 shoplifting incidents and 233 thefts from vehicles. In 2015, there were 274 shoplifting reports and 223 thefts from vehicles.

Day said warnings will be placed on cars regarding the recent thefts and reminding people to secure their valuables.

Anyone with information is asked to call Fairfield police Sgt. Pete Lagemann at 513-896-8246.
