Firefighters revamp fitness routines

Over the past year, Napas firefighters have expanded their daily fitness program, incorporating core, endurance and flexibility exercises in an effort to prevent injuries.
The daily morning group workouts at the citys four stations are more structured than in years past and have become part of the firefighters daily schedule.
Firefighters have to be physically fit, said Napa Fire Capt. Jarrett Anderson, the departments training officer, as a group of firefighters completed a circuit at Station 1 on Seminary Street.
Firefighting is an extremely vigorous activity. Were referred to as occupational athletes, Anderson said. The fitness program was designed to prevent back injuries, heart attacks and other ailments among the citys 50 firefighters who respond to an average of 300 fires a year, according to the department.
... When you get up at 2 a.m. from a resting state to go into a fire, you go from a very low heart rate to an extremely high heart rate, Anderson said.
Firefighters have always been a fit group, Anderson said. Yet when he started his career in 1996, it was not unusual to see a pink box of donuts at the fire stations kitchen, he said.
For that reason, he also stresses healthful eating habits, suggesting sample menus that steer firefighters away from the high-fat/low nutrition of yesteryear.
The department spent about $4,000 to replace some
25-year-old gym equipment at the citys two oldest stations, including Station 1. The gym equipment at Station 1 includes machines and exercise bars built from materials from the corporation yard. They also use ropes, a 30-pound ball and TRX gear.
Anderson consulted with physical therapists, doctors and trainers at Health Quest, where he works out every morning to give new life to the firefighters workout, to devise the new, revamped fitness program.
