BLOOMINGTON Orangetheory Fitness, a new exercise studio, wants to get all members in their fat-burning and target heart-rate zones.

The studio in Empire Crossing, 1500 E. Empire St., does that by hooking everyone to heart rate monitors and coaching each member throughout a one-hour workout, said Heather Cox, co-owner and operator. She and John Schrieffer own the franchise for Central Illinois.

"Orangetheory Fitness is straight out of the textbooks," said Cox, who has a degree in exercise science from Illinois State University. She spent five years as group fitness manager at Gold's Gym, Bloomington, before managing an Orangetheory studio in Chicago for a year.

Orangetheory has treadmills, rowers and strength stations but it isn't an open gym.

"We are group training only and people are coached for the entire hour" of endurance and strength training, Cox said.

Everyone is hooked to a heart-rate monitor "to prevent over-training and under-training," Cox said. "Our programs are designed to get everyone in their fat-burning zone for 25 to 35 minutes and we push to 84 percent or higher of our estimated maximum heart rate for 12 to 20 minutes."

Because everyone is coached to their individual zones, the six coaches are able to work with athletes and with people trying to get back into condition, Cox said.

"You do the work, you get the results. You are not getting lost," Cox said.

Eight to 10 classes are offered daily, beginning at 5 a.m., with the final class at 7:45 p.m.
