Fitness coach: O'Callaghan gets Tipp role

The Irish Times - Friday, November 2, 2012

Munster rugby fitness coach Fergal OCallaghan has been confirmed as the new physical trainer for the Tipperary senior hurlers.

Limerick native OCallaghan steps into the role vacated by Ross Dunphy, who has now linked up with Dublin.

The 43-year-old strength and conditioning expert went to St Munchins College in Limerick and played rugby until Junior Cup stage.

He was also an accomplished hurler and won county medals with Ahane at all levels from U12 to U16.

OCallaghan took up rowing at 16 years of age and he went on to win six senior national titles.

He was also a member of the national squad for the 1992, 1993 and 1995 world championships.

An honorary life member at Shannon Rowing club, OCallaghan is a University of Limerick graduate and he is the current Munster rugby academy head of fitness. He was involved with Munster for all four of their Heineken Cup final appearances, including the 2006 and 2008 tournament wins.

The recruitment of OCallaghan, who has previously worked with the Limerick, Offaly and Galway senior hurlers, is seen as a real coup for new Tipp boss Eamon OShea.

Confirming the appointment, Tipperary County Board chairman Sen Nugent said: Were delighted to welcome Fergal on board. His CV speaks for itself in the world of physical fitness and this is a hugely significant appointment.
