Gym-goers weigh the value of fitness memberships during COVID – WLNE-TV (ABC6)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) Danielle Bisson says shes noticed fewer people at her gym lately due to cancellations.

If you think its not safe for yourself, if you have medical conditions or something, its kind of hard, said the Warwick resident.

But canceling isnt always easy.

I spent probably five weeks trying to tell this guy I want my personal training contract to not renew itself, and I kept getting charged week after week, said Brian Moran of Smithfield.

It added up to about $750 worth of personal training sessions that hadnt been refunded.

It was frustrating, because money was tight with the pandemic, Moran said. I wasnt using the service at all.

Anytime Fitness said this was a misunderstanding, so the personal trainer provided free sessions to make up for the lost ones, and that contract is now canceled.

But some say they havent canceled their memberships because they support their gyms and feel comfortable with the safety protocols theyve put in place.

Bisson, who works in healthcare herself, says her Planet Fitness location in Warwick reminds people to wear masks from the moment they arrive and gives them to people who dont have them.

Anything thats not cardio, you have to wear it at all times, she said of the mask requirement. Every hour theyre using this machine that sanitizes stuff in each section. They wear the masks, theyre fine, the social distancing. Youve just got to follow the rules and stay with it.
