Gyms and coronavirus: Fitness facilities in Atlantic Canada stepping up cleaning to guard against COVID-19 – The Telegram

Gyms and fitness studios in Atlantic Canada are stepping up cleaning measures amid growing coronavirus concerns and calls for so-called social distancing.

Fitness facilities from boutique yoga studios to large gyms have emailed members and posted notices outlining new measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The measures include more frequent cleaning of high-contact surfaces like mats and dumbbells, and reminding members to wash their hands and stay home if they're unwell.

R Studios, three boutique fitness studios Rio, Rebel and Rogue in Halifax and Dartmouth, emailed members Thursday detailing the steps its taking.

The company said it is cleaning all equipment and floors between classes with new cleaning supplies that are a little bit stronger than our natural supply that we normally use.

R Studios also said it would waive late cancellation fees to encourage members who are feeling sick to stay home.

Move East, a boutique fitness studio in Halifax, also sent an email to members outlining the precautions being taken.

The business said it has doubled the frequency of its professional cleaning service, and is washing floors, equipment and door handles after classes.

It also encouraged members to wash their hands with an antibacterial soap provided in its washrooms.

Modo Yoga, which has locations in Halifax, Bedford, Fredericton and Charlottetown, posted the steps its taking to combat the novel coronavirus on Facebook.

The yoga studio company said it has increased how often its studios and restrooms are cleaned.

It said high touch areas including door handles, lockers, taps and light switches are being wiped down regularly with a hospital-grade disinfectant.

Modo Yoga also said it is disinfecting mats and props after every class, but encouraged members to bring their own.

The studio added: If you are feeling at all unwell, stay at home. You cannot sweat out a cold.

Meanwhile, GoodLife Fitness one of the largest gyms in Canada with more than 300 locations issued a notice about coronavirus earlier this week.

The gym said it uses hospital-grade cleaners to disinfect its clubs daily, and reminded members to wipe down equipment after each use and regularly wash hands with soap and water.

The first case of COVID-19 in Atlantic Canada was confirmed in New Brunswick on Wednesday.

A Nova Scotia health department spokeswoman directed questions about whether its safe to attend gyms to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The federal agency says on its website that social distancing minimizing close contact with others is one way to reduce COVID-19 transmission in the community.

While it says avoiding large crowds and mass events can reduce the spread of infection, it does not specifically mention gyms.
